Bears at Giants Quick Recap

Well this picture says it all.

The only particularly noteworthy stat of the night is the 10 sacks given up by the Bears, and the two quarterbacks knocked out of the game. Everything else was pedestrian and largely terrible football, at least from the Bears standpoint. The defense played it's hearts out, but was unable to overcome the legen-wait for it-dary bad performance of the Bears offense.

Hats off to the Giants defensive line, they won this game.

I'll be back in the morning with notes, scribbles, and things. I need to chill out before I can write something like that.

I am worried that the league is now going to blitz us into oblivion, we might be looking at a long season with this Oline that isnt fit for div 1 college.

They didn't blitz that much, though

A lot of their pressure came from the four lineman. How the Bears were able to handle themselves well against the blitzes of the two previous 3-4 teams and then come out and shove their thumbs up their bums is beyond me.

I didn't think the D gave up.

They were still swarming to the ball and playing with heart. They were just really really really tired. Both physically and mentally. You could see it. They started playing a second slower, and unable to bring down the runner. You could tell that they were playing with urgency, trying to cause fumbles and do something to win the game, but they just didn’t have the energy to execute.

Any defense that goes out on that field for that amount of time will start to crack in the fourth quarter.

It wasn't Cutler tonight. It was Omiyale, Louis, Shaffer, Manu, Kreutz, OLSEN, etc.

Cutler had a poor performance last week. But this week, he didn’t even have a chance to suck. There was absolutely NO time. Here’s the scary thing. Most of the time, the Giants were rushing with only their front four.

When you have pressure with the front four, there are no holes to exploit in the defense. Simple as that.

we also lost Urlacher, Tino...

and a crap ton of other defensive players early in the season last season. Granted we don’t know much about Cutler’s concussion yet, or what it will do to his future.

And I’m not saying we don’t have issues, of course we do. Go back and read my comments prior to this game, or even pre/post draft about the offensive line. All I’m saying is last year =/= this year.

Post Game Grades

QB’s: C, Cutler was terrible, Hanie made a nice throw, Collins was the same as Hanie
RB’s: C, Better burst than expected
WR’s: B-, Knox is still good
TE’S: D, Olson caught a block but can’t block
OL’s: F- Horrible
DL’s: B+, Good pressure all night. Pep and Izzy played well
LB’s: B, Briggs was bad. Pisa was solid and Brian was all over
DB’s: B-, Good in run support for the most part, had to play man which is out of comfort zone
K: Gould was bad on kickoffs
P: Maynard was horrible tonight, need to look for an heir
ST: Hester let two go that he should have tried to pick up

We are still 3-1. Let’s all calm down. We overreact to everything. Plenty of time. Overall, a fun season to this point.

After missing the game thread by watching THAT...

All I want to do is curse. Grah.

  • Sloppy sloppy game.
  • After borrowing Coach Quenneville’s line generator modified for O-Linemen, about all we really can do is just pray for better line play.
  • If our hopes are pinned on Collins or Hanie for a few games, may Ditka help us all.
  • Nine first half sacks. Now imagine if Kiwanuka was actually playing. Or not. I’d prefer not.
  • Forte cannot run the ball, especially behind this line. Taylor only looked marginally better. As long as the line is this crappy, the offense just crawls to a halt. Kinda what you’d expect.
  • Was anyone else having flashbacks to 2004 or 2005?
  • On the Cutler interception in Olsen’s direction, he got too focused on his binky again… He had Knox running the drag, would’ve been a simple pitch and catch for the first down.
  • Brandon Jacobs clearly still has ability. I guess somewhere down the line we got unused to getting hit in the mouth by a back.
  • Batman needs a Robin on that line. Melton was getting more consistent penetration, though Harris did have that nice one play.

you can have marshall faulk, kurt warner, tory holt, and isaac bruce in their primes line up, and not do anything. you cannot have any success on offense if your line gives you no time to do anything when the other team isn’t even blitzing. unless the line play improves significantly, we have no chance of winning anything.

They are done he will never play for the Pats again, they will trade him or he walks. Mankin is a good solid player

I love the Chicago Bears to death.

The only team I root for and will be the only team I ever root for. Their performance tonight was not only embarrassing to themselves, but for the fans across the globe. I’ll give credit to the D though b/c they kept us in the game for while by themselves. Only one game though, so let’s hope for a far better performance next week.

what went wrong? the line

end of story. it was like a college team playing a pro team out there. if we bring that kind of effort, we will not beat anyone without the defense and special teams doing our scoring, because we have no shot at doing anything on offense if the opposing team can be in the backfield without blitzing within 4 seconds of the snap on almost every play.

As thousands put down the glass of Martz Kool-Aid

George Santayana comes to mind: “Those
who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Martz system has typically had tons of picks, tons of sacks and a history of getting Qbs concussions. As good as the Kool-aid tasted, I think we had a reminder of the poison which lies within.

Hopefully this quote does not ring true but certainly serves as a reminder after watching this awful performance tonight. I think the thought of no Turner might have hoodwinked us a little… or maybe it was a 1 game bad fluke. Here is hoping for the latter but understanding the possibility and reality of option #1.

by TheMan1 on Oct 4, 2010 12:51 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Put this one on Martz.

Absolute refusal to try and establish the run against the 5th worse run defense in the league. Well done Mike. Abandoning the shotgun. Well done.

Cutler played so badly that one wonders if he didn’t get concussion on one of the early hits from the thousand or so he took. He was running out of bounds instead of tossing the ball away, the clock in his head either wasn’t working or he likes being hit.

Martz offenses :

1. Get their QB hit a lot.
2. Turn the ball over a lot.
3. Occasionally score a lot of points.

Well, we’re not going to achieve #3 with Todd Collins, that’s for sure. Caleb won’t last too long behind that line either, not with Greg Olsen and Omiyale’s blocking, amongst other’s – but theirs just stank.

And before anyone says thank God for our defense, Bradshaw & Jacobs ran for 129 and 62 yards with a 5 1/2 and 10 yard averages for a TD apiece. The #1 run defense looked very poor against a team that was missing their center and having trouble running the ball. Where do we go from here?

by Wally&Mac on Oct 4, 2010 3:42 AM CDT reply actions

wally

the defense never got a chance to rest
they held them in check but come on we were o -12 on third down at one point in the 3rd qtr
you know what that means the offense got 12 straight 3 and outs, so where in the world would they have gotten rest.
you show me any team in the league who’s defense is playing basically every snap and isnt going to be tired.
notice how at halftime the giants as a team had 98 yrds… defense was holding but its only so long you can cover for an offensive line that quite simply put didnt get this done
im NOT blaming jay cutler
mike martz
forte
olsen
im blaming Mike Tice, that horrible O-Line, and Lovie for not going out and getting jay cutler some type of protection.
6 sacks by the opposing teams De?
a DT coming through on a pass play with almost no block from lance louis
10 sacks 6 of which were totally unavoidable and unseen
the giants might i add also did this with 4 linemen no blitz for the most part

Time of Possession

was split about 33 minutes for the Giants, 26 for the Bears.

It is not as if the Bears Defense was on the field for 45 minutes. Half and half is about right.

If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

and the giants

also ran 64 plays and had 18 first downs
the bears ran 52 with 6 first downs…. time of possession doesnt always tell the story Kev
the numbers show the bears offense was having alot of 3 and outs
the giants on the other hand may not have been moving the ball consistently but they tripled us on first downs

with that on third down
chicago: 0-13
n.y: 3-12
the defense allowed 98 yrds at halftime and gave up 372….
The bears had 2 possession more than 5 plays
the Giants had 5 they doubled us there

and just in case

...

The Bears’ defense broke down late, but it kept them in the game, holding the Giants to a 3-0 lead at the half. The D forced seven three-and-out drives and forced two fumbles and recovered another. Smith said he would’ve liked to have seen more takeaways. While the Bears gave up Ahmad Bradshaw’s 129 rushing yards, only 47 came in the first half.

by DagoT on Oct 4, 2010 6:49 AM CDT reply actions

This I Learned

1. Cutler held the ball too long (like Big Ben at times does) But I can’t blame him for the offense failure.
2. Why the Fc*k do we NEVER let the QB change the damn play?
3. This is the worst O-line EVER, PERIOD, End of discussion.
4. We had no running game, cause we didn’t run the ball when Jay was in
5. This falls on the bad Coaching, the Linemen, and Angelo’s refusual to look for better linemen.
6. Why the hell was Collins old ass in the game?
7. The Giants D-line caught the Bears O-line on a bad night (usually they will allow about four sacks before the half) Thats then on a good night.
8. Olsen STILL can’t block for nothing
9. Manumalkala was a waste of money
10. At least defense gave it their all (all except for Tommie again)
11. Peppers is still awesome.

Cause he's the only person

who’s so desperate for an NFL job, if Cutler got hurt he’d be willing to play behind that line.

Good Answer

(Sing song)...Everybody Hates Rondo...

by T.Moore on Oct 4, 2010 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

Couple of sober thoughts...

1. Cutler concussion was probably earlier than the Ross hit; he played like he was confused.
2. The O-line is simply useless; they cannot handle 3 or 4 guys with no blitzing.
3. Manu is a waste of space and money!
4. Forte cannot run between the tackles with this O-line.
5. C Taylor can run between the tackles with this O-line.
6. T Harris is done; he’s just flailing about, falling down, and doing nothing.
7. A Adams and Toeaina are the best combo at the DTs
8. Bowman is still not as good as Jennings.
9. Martz did not adjust at all and it may have cost the Bears a chance at the playoffs.
10. Next week will show how well Lovie can coach; if he can rally his team and the coaches to actually develop, execute and modify the game plan as needed, he deserves to remain the HC. Otherwise, I’m changing my tag line back!

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO TRADE TOMMY!...

by LostInSTL on Oct 4, 2010 8:26 AM CDT reply actions

A couple of other things

I agree above with L I S, I think Cutler was foggy early on and he was not himself. He was hurt and shellshocked and unable to make good decisions with the ball. But the effort on the Oline is almost unforgiveable. They were just waving at guys as they ran by it was an em"bear"assment to athletes all over the world. The only reason we won the last 2 games in spite of them was their supreme effort to make up for their lack of skill. Lack of skill + lack of effort = disaster. The line between a good team and a poor one in the NFL is a very thin margin. A poor team that comes fired up and ready to play vs. a team that has superior talent and not ready to play is going to spell trouble. Our coaches did not have our offense ready to play last night.

"We were freaking robbed!! Our defense totally dominated all day! What? we gave up nearly 500 yards on defense? Yeah but we stopped them on the 1 yrd line! Our D is awesome!!"
