How does this make sense when you go into a season where you know your O-line has questions?
Add to that, your history shows that your system puts your QB at risk with more sacks/hits than any other teams so, obviously, the chances of your starter going out are much higher.
Martz doesn’t make it easy on the reserve quarterbacks because they get zero reps in practice during the week.
General observation...
Bears win, fans say “we’re good” and complain that we don’t get enough credit!
Bears lose, fans say “they suck at life” and give the Giant’s team no credit!
Funny how that works out sometimes.

I never said we're good.....
And the Giants didn’t exactly look great until they played us. Then they looked really great. That’s what gets me… just as soon as I think I have a feel for this team they go out and play the opposite of my expectations. For good or for bad they somehow manage to confound me every time….
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
At the same time, the Giants should be given credit. They stuck to the script.
The offense didn’t counter the rush.

Opposite expectations...
We’ve known all along that our offensive line was garbage and that the Mikes had to game plan and make adjustments to compensate. Nothing changed in this past week, it was still garbage and they did try different things. However, the Giants defense played a really damn good game, and were constantly in the backfield with only a FOUR man rush.
We, as a team, are nowhere near as bad as we showed Sunday night. Hell, our offensive line isn’t even as bad as they showed… and I’ve been one of their biggest critics throughout this off-season. And, to the counterpoint, we were never as good as people wanted to make us out to be after the first few games. Hence why I cautioned people to “pump their brakes” a bit.
Bottom line, it’s never as bad, or as good, as we think it is. We’re not a terrible team, we just got beat by a better team – that night. Our defense still played a really good game for the most part. If we would’ve capitalized on some of those early mistakes by the Giants’ special teams, the game would’ve turned out different, imo. However, we didn’t, their D continued to play great, we lost.
Now, we move on to Carolina.
And as an aside, can we kill it with the diabeetus night vision talk already. < – not directed at you, just pointing out another general observation!

It most definitely is not. Skimming the boards over the past few days has been dreadful and that comment has been muttered over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
And fwiw, I’m not against Cutler taking blame. He plays his part and he should. So, I guess we kind of agree there. But we agree on more than you think we do.

Never get too high nor too low. I was happy with the disrespect the Bears were getting. It’s quite obvious with high expectations they wilt quicker than a neglected flower. When they’re looked past by the MSM and their opponents, they respond very well and usually win.

Bears Pocket QB's
Cutler looked a little scary last week against the Packers but he got the job done. This past weekend he looked like he was scared out there—just like Grossman used to look when he was tired of getting sacked. The one thing I notice about both of these guys is that when they look scared and tired of being sacked, the cure is a QB run play for positive yards or good play-action pass to get their confidence back. This type of play never came up in NY and Cutler looked like a deer in the headlights. Here’s to hoping he rebounds big and gains his confidence back!
what have you been smoking?
Cutler is like Grossman? Maybe you need to look again.

Learn how to read
The comparison is how Cutler and Grossman both act when they get sacked a number of times and look scared, not knowing what to do.
by Stellarpete22 on Oct 5, 2010 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Grossman has never got what Cutler's been gettin
Add the fact that The Cannon had an all around better offense, and there’s more than meets the eye. I’d say Jay is worried about getting hit while throwing, whereas Rex was thinking too much, which led to poor throws.
You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes.

I agree Cutler is definitely better than Grossman
ifuwannacrownem: The RESULTS are still the same—thinking too much and being worried about getting hit = poor plays. Rex with the bad throws and INT’s and Cutler with the holding on to the ball way too long and looking for the sack instead of getting rid of the ball.

Confident and Consistent
We need Cutler confident and protected or him at least getting out of the pocket when it collapses because that’s when he excels.

by 62bearsthe best on Oct 5, 2010 11:16 AM CDT up reply actions
what are you some kinda new age phyco/analyst?
the only comparison is in your poor memory, Grossman played behind a better offensive line on a team that could actually run the ball. On the field he looked confused sometimes but only really looked scared when he had to talk to the media. Cutler didn’t look scared he looked like someone who’s bell got rung . You have to be able to run the ball for play-action to work. Call a QB run play that’s just nuts. Jay need to play a little faster hit a couple of his hot reads early and Martz could have/should have called more running plays. To say Cutler is scared, doesn’t know what to do, lacks confidence is just BS.
by 62bearsthe best on Oct 5, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions
Phyco?
I agree Grossman has a better line and you’re right, a better running game too—the play action like you said has to make sense and what I wrote did not. But, the QB run not necessarily as a designed run but when the pocket collapses, take off running and get the first down. Then, the confidence level is up again and keeps the defense honest—can’t keep standing in the pocket all day. QB’s thrive off of confidence in the NFL and when you make a big play you see more of them and vice versa—bad plays end up with more bad plays (phsycological). You act like this was Cutler’s first game of looking bad? Any game where his passer rating has been below 100, he hasn’t really looked: confident; throws off his back foot; stays and holds ball in the pocket too long—ALL THINGS that Grossman used to do. Are they really the same players? NO NOT AT ALL. Cutler is still smarter and better and Grossman did overthink but, comparing their bad days to each other isn’t crazy. Look at their passer rating ups and downs—those types of things I’m comparing, not the quality of player and whose better or worse because we all know Cutler IS better.
by Stellarpete22 on Oct 5, 2010 12:25 PM CDT up reply actions
your not saying now what you were saying then but what your saying now
If Grossman and Cutler have anything in common its the bad luck of ending up in Chicago.
Cutler does not suffer from a lack of confidence if anything its just the opposite, all those INTs last year because I believed he could thread the needle and put the ball into tight coverage. (a number 1 reciever willing to fight for the ball might have helped also)
he’s throwing off his back foot cuz he doesn’t have time to get set up. He really doesn’t have the quick feet like say a Mike Vick.
Sunday the pocket was colasping so quickly he really didn’t have good places to run to. But then perhaps you wanted to recommend some roll outs?
He’s been berated for throwing up picks rather than protecting the ball and taking a sack. as far as throwing the ball away you can’t do that while your in the pocket “between the tackles”
Jay could have played better no doubt, but when you’ve got 5,6 and sometimes 7 blockers who can’t even slow down 4 rushers should we heap more abuse on top of the pounding he took from NY? Accountability right lets sit him on the bench next to Tommie and Zack and tell him “your holding the ball too long cost us 9 sacks, while your sitting on the bench this week think about doing a better job of making your hot reads and learn how to throw the ball away while your running for your bloody life”.
I wonder what Grossman’s career would have been like if he had got drafted by New England?

I wouldn’t say the Denver line is really all that good, but compared to what we have, it’s amazing.

Also, probably the most amusing part of it was this line…
Through the first four weeks of the 2010 season, Orton’s 1,419 passing yards leads the NFL; Cutler is 507 yards behind him.
And Virto, yeah, Denver’s line is mediocre… but they can run block quite a bit better than the Bears.

Moon nailed the grades
From the Lovie on Tommie article:
“Good to get him back in the mix,” Smith said of Harris.
Which part of Tommie falling to the ground 150 times was good, Lovie?
From Jim “Crazy Legs” Miller sounding off:
Instead, much like the confusion on the field, the Bears go in at the half with doctors evaluating Jay and no one prepping the offense – Todd Collins or Caleb Hanie for the inevitable. Collins said in his post game presser, “I did not know I was playing until coming out of the tunnel for the second half.”
That is unacceptable and poor preparation by the Bears coaching staff!
Ya, that’s kinda embarrassing for the coaching staff.
From Moon’s questioning of Martz:
One other scenario may be to slide Omiyale, now clearly considered one of the Bears’ five best blockers, in at a guard spot where he overcame early struggles last season to perform well at left guard in the second half of the year.
I’m gonna have to say no. Bad idea IMHO.

Hey Taylor et al....
I like the idea of Tommie “the Domino” Harris! Can we get an order of Tommie mocked up in such a manner!
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO TRADE TOMMY!...
Okay I took a day to digest Sunday night and here's my take...
1.)Burn the tape from Sunday and let’s move on.
2.)The O-line is terrible and Cutler is running for his life but he also has to make better decisions with the ball. On the bright side, at least he didn’t go on an interception binge like he may have last year. lol.
3.)We’re not going to win anything this year not running the ball so it would behoove Martz to start trying to run it. We got Taylor for a reason right?
4.) The defense is for real
5.) Perspective zone: The Bears are 3-1 and lead the NFC North with the next 2 games being winnable. That’s all that matters now.
Yeah but it worked!
On a more positive note...
The whipping/beating/embarrassment issued Sunday night should prove revealing to the usually oblivious coaching staff.
Lovie and Co. are still working for their professional lives this season. They have already shown a propensity for making changes. I would expect some more this week.
Jay’s drops will likely be dropped for at least the first half of future games until the drop offs have been established. Only then would I expect to see deep routes. Since we can’t seem to run either, the quick slants and 3 step drops would be the only logical solution since we ain’t gettin any help at the beef market.
There will likely be more rotation and juggling of personnel on the OL, this will befuddle any team thinking they can repeat the gameplan of the Giants.
We still have some really talented folks on our team. Our D has been better than solid, without them we lose 42-3. Our special teams, save for a few miscues has been quite good. We’ve found out some of our young guys (Props to Tim Jennings) got game.
All is not lost. Our schedule is relatively soft, we will be in the playoffs, for how long depends upon how much we can improve.
Can anybody get Logan’s agent on the phone?
