Rumors Swirling Around Randy Moss-Vikings Trade

At this point, we've only got tweets to work with, but stay tuned.  Here's where it stands:

Bill Simmons:

-Sorry that last tweet was supposed to be a DM. Rumors swirling about a Pats-Minny trade for Randy Moss.

-I am a moron with twitter on blackberry, that's the 4th time I tried to DM someone and it came out as a tweet. Might be time for Tweet Deck.

-As far as DM accidents go, that was a 3 on the Ray Allen Scale. Sorry. Hate passing along rumors, that's why I was DM-ing for info.

Jay Glazer:

Star-divide

-Yes, vikes and pats have been working on trade that sends randy moss to vikes and r very clode but can't be done until vikes and moss work out new contract, whcih they r working on

-hey bill simmons @sportsguy33, damn you! Hahaha. I've been sitting on it allllll day. Was hoping to come outta left field and then u let slip. Classic! Good job

My first reaction is that this is not good for Chicago....

But then I thought……

Hey, the Vikings have possibly the best defensive line in the NFL. What do they need offense for against the Matadors of the Midway? The defense should be able to score at will.

I truly hate being this negative, but I am literally sick after rewatching the first half of the game. I don’t think I have ever seen worse play by an offensive line. And I’m not exaggerating or over-reacting. I really don’t think I have ever seen a worse half of football played at any level by an offensive line. Even Kruetz looked like a 7 year old girl. Wors eyet was that after watching the first half twice, I can see where the coaching staff tried several times to make adjustments, just to watch the heralded blocker Brandon “He’s gonna replace Olsen” Manumaleuna screw the pooch with precision, Kruetz and Louis let DTs by without either one of them laying a hand on him, Omiyale and Shaffer get beat consistently on the outside. Adjustment didn’t help. 7 on 4 didn’t help. I was worried about this line from the beginning, and the release of Asiata sent up a huge red flag for me. How could a guy who was so good that he was being considered to start be released just a few weeks later? Answer, he sucked. Extrapolated answer, the Bears have so little talent on the offensive line that a bum like Asiata was actually being considered for a starting position. Notice that this near starter hasn’t been sniffed by any other team since being waived?

I’m going to stop now, before I end up slitting my own wrists with my Chicago Bears mousepad. Jesus Christ.

I disagree, with all do respect to Hodge....

But the Vikings D-Line may not be getting a huge number of sacks, but they are creating pressure. There’s a reason they are the 3rd ranked scoring defense, 4the ranked in yardage allowed and 6th in third down conversion percentage allowed and 1st downs allowed. With all do respect to Merrill, the line is where it all starts in Minnesota.

Their secondary is leagues ahead of ours, at least in yards allowed. Their pass defense’s strength is coverage. Ours is turnovers. Two different routes to very similar results. Both are playing fine pass defense.

False....

Minnesota’s 1st 4th QTR comeback was week 3 against the 9ers in a back and forth game (27-24).
You led in from the 3rd on against Cleveland in week 1 (34-20) and Detroit in week 2 (27-13). You led from the second quarter on, and never trailed against GB in week 4 (30-23, and was 30-14 before garbage time). You led the entire game against the Rams in week 5 (38-10).

That doesn’t sound like you had to come from behind in the first five games. It sound like the opposing teams, other than SF were the ones trying to come from behind The only game that was decide by less than 7 points was SF.. Just thought I’d point that out.

61% completion percentage
597 yards
2 TDs
6 INTs
60.4 QB rating

65% completion percentage
566 yards

94.5 QB rating
3-0 record

I'm gonna go out on a limb and presume you didn't watch those three games.

Or… honestly… look at the numbers you’ve posted.

2010 Favre 1st three games:
60 completions
97 attempts
61% completion percentage
597 yards

2009 Favre 1st three games:
61 completions
94 attempts
65% completion percentage
566 yards

Yeah…. those numbers aren’t similar at all. If you’re for digging up more statistics, can you also get his completion percentage for the next three games, and then for the rest of the season from then on to boot? Thanks.

Last year, the teams we faced at this time last year finished 21st, 29th, and 32nd in terms of defence against the pass. This year, we’ve faced teams that are 6th, 11th, and 26th.

I’m presuming here, that when teams fare better against the pass, they also do better in INTs. Last year, those teams were 11th, 29th, and 30th in INTs. This year, those teams are 8th 20th and 20th. Technically better, but not as much as defense against the pass.

We can go round and round on this for who knows how long. In the end, you’ll still hate the Vikings, and I’ll still be watching them weekly. I’ll have the firsthand viewing experience, you’ll have the play by play stat sheet. And which do you think is more valuable?

It's a slow work day

So here’s some stats.

For a point of reference, the average yardage gained in the first three in 2009 was 189.

2009 Favre games 4-6
63 completions
84 attempts
75% completion
781 yards avg 260

2009 Favre games 7 – 16
239 completions
353 attempts
67.7% completion
2855 yards avg 286

Right now, Favre’s still working on his timing with his deeper receivers. It happened last year, it’s happening this year. If he’s still struggling after week six, then I’ll be worried. But not now.

When you assume......

you make an………..well, I’m sure you know the rest…..

I actually watched the first 4 games the vikings played last season (as well as the NO and ET game sfrom this season…I missed the Miami game). I was interested in seeing how Favre played, Minnesota is a division rival, and I always watch a division game if it doesn’t conflict with Chicago’s schedule. On top of that, my wife and some of my kids are Minnesota natives, and while my wife is a Bears fan, some of the kids are Vikings fans. Favre wasn’t perfectly crisp, no. He managered games and made very good decisions. He’s not making good decisions now (which is a trademark of his and last year was a sort of an enigma) and saying that he looked as bad as he does now is ridiculous. He has 6x more interceptions and 40% of the TDs. Nice how you ignored that, wasn’t it? Or the record difference? No, you payed attention to the 4 stats that have the least bearing on gaging a QB. You also seemed to gloss over the fact that the difference between 61% and 65% is the difference between being ranked 9th and being ranked 15th. Top 10 or middle of the pack? Which is better again?

More ridiculousness…….

  • You are comparing the rankings of the 2009 teams’ 16 games to the 2010 teams’ 4 games. Well, if we’re going to do that, then lets redo Favre for the full 16 games of 2009 and compare, shall we?
  • Your argument that a team with a good passing defense would then have more INTs doesn’t hold water,(though I would have guess you were right before I did the math). The league best defense against the pass is the Ravens. They lead in passing yardage allowed and passing TDs allowed. Yet, only the Bills have fewer INTs. The Ravens have 1. Conversely, the Patriots are arguably the worst passing defense in the league. They rank 28th in passing yardage allowed per game and 1st in passing tds allowed, yet are ranked 2nd in the league in INTs. Take your Vikings. Ranked 8th in passing ypg allowed and 10th in passing tds per game allowed, yet rank 26th in INTs. You theory sounds solid, and would seem to make sense, but unfortunately doesn’t hold up to the actual test. I’m sure you are glad it doesn’t, considering how it worked for your Vikings.
  • Additionally, yardage rankings are misleading. For example, the Bears would be the 27th ranked passing D if you paid attention to the yardage. But we run a bend don’t break defense (commonly refered to here as the Cover Who), and that means we give up yards for turnover attempts. Now, the Bears rank 2nd in passing TDs allowed per game and 13th in INTs. They are also ranked 1st in defensive fumble recoveries with 7. of those 7, 6 were created by the pass rush or the passing defense (the only rushing fumble the Bears recovered was Bradshaw’s this week. So yardage doesn’t show an accurate picture at all.

Look, I’m not saying Favre was in late season form in the beginning of the season. But if you are making the argument that because he threw and completed about the same number of passes and that he was just a s bad last year than this year, then I’m gonna throw the bullshit card. I watched those games. And he wasn’t bad at all. In fact, he threw 5 TDs and just 1 INT with a 94.5 qbr and a 3-0 record, compared to 2 TDs and 6 INTs and a 60.4 qbr with a 1-2 record this year. I don’t care how you try and spin it, he is definitely worse this year than last over the first three games. And no amount of spin will change that. Can Favre adjust? If there was ever a 41 year old QB that could turn it around, It’s the ol’ purple cheese. But that won’t spin away the fact that he has been far worse through 3 this year than he was last.

Dominating stats? 2009 v 2010 TD/INT ration, in decimal? 5.0 > 0.333. no? How bout 2009 v 2010 TD%? 5.3 > 2.1. Still not convinced? last one. 2009 v 2010 INT%….which one’s better? 1.1 > 6.2. Starting to see my point?

As far as value, I’ll take my stats and viewing experience over your spin and viewing experience any day. I say spin because you seem like a pretty decent guy to me, and pretty bright. So I think you see exactly what happened and you are spinning it because yo love your team. Don’t worry, bro. We do plenty of it, too and if I was a Vikings fan, I might be sugar coating The Purple Cheese’s performance as well.. It helps for a little bit (Believe me I know. We’ve had Jerry Angelo for a long time, my man). For examples see some of the responses trying to hope our line isn’t what it looks like. You can find them in several threads. ;).

That's why I always use presume.

I hate that damn saying.

My point was that last year at this time, he was still learning how to play with his receivers. Most passes went for short yardage to dump-off targets (RBs or TEs) as the season went on, his timing with his WR got better and he was more accurate on longer range passes (Completion percentage up, avg yardage up). This season, he showed up in week 3 again, and instead of having the same group of receivers, Rice was injured, Harvin was playing out of slot, and Berrian… well… Yeesh.

Go ahead and look up his preseason week 3 forward pass. I’ll wait.

Additionally, TDs and INTs can be to no fault or talent of the QB. For example, against the Lions, we scored a TD when Favre overthrew a wide-open Harvin and he had to dive and stretch to catch it. Against the Dolphins, Harvin bobbled an on-target ball into the air which was then snagged by the Defense.

So, no, I’m not convinced. I’ll sit here and wait for more data before passing a judgement. If after the next three games he’s still looking rusty, then I’ll say he’s lost it. But I won’t judge it on TDs and INTs alone.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Look, I'm not saying he's done....

I’m saying he’s worse than he was at this point last year. And you make a decent argument about the TDs. I disagree, but your argument is reasonable, and has merits. But you didn’t address the decision issues. You are right. Last season, as aI said above, he managed the games as he felt out his receivers (I actually typed felt “up” his receivers first, by mistake and had to delay my post after the proof read to I could clean the Mountain Dew off of my screen, lol) and made good decisions, such as the check downs you mention above. That’s why he had 1 INT last season (which was uncharacteristic) and why he has 6 this season. Ability has nevver been (nor will it ever be) Favre’s problem. I’m starting to think that he’ll still be out there at 75 throwing downfield from his wheelchair as Tarvaris Jackson’s Grandson sits on the Bench pissed because he’s not getting an opportunity (but acting like a class act about it if he’s anything like his grandpa). But the decision making has been his problem throughout his career, and has ended many a post-season bid for Favre led teams. He seems to have returned to form, and I’m starting to think that last year was more fluke and less growth.

At this point, I don't feel it's fair to judge.

I feel his decision making is similar to last year, except since we’ve had more pressure to play from behind, he’s making harder throws that, honestly, he’s just not ready for yet. Right now, it’s just a matter of playing the waiting game.

And yes, the waiting game does suck.

No 100%.....

I don’t see any answer to the question of why that merits an absolute response. You could very well be right. I disagree, but not emphatically. Watching him in NO and DET games, as well as the lowlights of the craptastic Miami performance, Favre appears to be making decisions that remind me a lot of Rex Grossman. That wasn’t the way he looked to me last year. He looked rusty in both examples, but the decision making looks way off. Now your proposal that playing from behind might be the root cause might very well be the case (I actually agree completely) but that doesn’t negate the fact that the decisions are still poor, and it is representative of his history prior to 2009. I, myself, wouldn’t take any comfort away from that.

Sadly I do.

But that’s because he makes decisions, as opposed to sitting in the pocket all day. *cough*T-Jack*cough*

I can see that, as well.

I actually think T-Jack has a future. Especially if he has taken the time to actually learn from Favre in his time on the pine. He could end up being dangerous with a little confidence and a touch of the Favre gunslinger in him.

Well, going off of the pre-season...

T-Jack looked no different, and Webb looked like a faster, more accurate, decision-making version of T-Jack. So… I’ll take more of the guy with the clipboard.

I didn't see any Vikings pre-season....

so I’ll have to defer to your better judgement on that one.

Vikings suck, end of story
