Chicago Jazz > Three Am-Egos

We have no way of knowing whether Adams

would have played up to the #2 we gave up for him. The first year he didn’t do much, but he also didn’t come to Chicago until after week 4 or 5 either. Using the 10 games he was active as a Bear is not necessarily a reason to say it was a bad move.

by Dane Noble on Oct 6, 2010 7:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

But it was still a risky move by Angelo. We already didn’t have a 1st rounder, and even at that point, the O-line was bad – and here Angelo is trading away our second round draft pick. Who knows. maybe Adams looked like he was ready to resurrect his career. The Bucs’ coach had called Adams out that pre-season and said that if he didn’t turn it around last year, he would be considered a “bust.”

Then, after Adams’ passing, JA releases Alex Brown, and promotes Anderson – who hasn’t done anything since 2006. Kind of puzzling…

by JimmyMack on Oct 6, 2010 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't thnk the Bears...

… ever had the money for Peppers and Brown to be the ends. They used the money they saved on Brown to pay for Peppers.

As for Gaines, a heart problem makes it really hard to judge the evaluators of Gaines talent. Now what is puzzling to me is how teams can spend all that money on players and then skimp on a $1,000 test that would have saved Gaines’ life…

by DaleHalas on Oct 6, 2010 9:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't kid yourself

We’re one of the richest franchises (and biggest underachievers) in sports. And we probably saved enough money by cutting Vasher and a few others.

Besides, (over-paid or not) Brown wasn’t being paid anywhere near what they’re paying Peppers. Right now, keeping Brown is looking more and more like a relative bargain. At this point, who would you have rather seen opposite Peppers?

by JimmyMack on Oct 6, 2010 9:54 AM CDT up reply actions

We also have what...

the 5th highest payroll in the leauge?

It’s no that we’re cheap or won’t spend money, it’s that we spend it on the wrong people.

by Virto on Oct 6, 2010 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't test for something that's not evident.

It’s impossible to determine when someone has this kind of heart problem. It will happen again. Just really bad luck.

testing for something that's not evident

Actually that is NOT true. The Bears do a Heart test for all players whether they show symptoms or not. They just do the cheaper (EKG) test.

Everything I have been told is that the more expensive Cardiac MRI test would have shown the condition…

by DaleHalas on Oct 6, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

That's my point

I realize the MRI would show it, but it’s not cost effective for every organization to do it as a screening test for each player. It’s like doing a biopsy just cause you’re paranoid about getting cancer.

by propheteer on Oct 6, 2010 9:27 PM CDT up reply actions

"it’s not cost effective for every organization to do it as a screening test for each player"

Let me get this straight, Gaines Adams originally signed for 6 years at 46 Million dollars but a one thousand dollar test to protect that investment is NOT cost effective?

The Bears committed at least 3+ million. You want to say a one thousand dollar test to protect that investment is NOT cost effective.

Sorry, I don’t agree. There is a lot of inflation going on so it is no longer “penny wise and pound foolish”. It is now “thousands wise and millions foolish…”

by DaleHalas on Oct 6, 2010 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

The cost isn't really the concern

Sure, every team can afford it, but why? What are the percentages of players that have it? Maybe once every couple of years.

"How do you know somebody is great? When you see how they respond to adversity. Anybody can man a ship when the waters are calm." - Jerry Angelo

by propheteer on Oct 6, 2010 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

why?

Lets see. The average salary in the NFL is 750K. So you are talking about a tenth of one percent insurance on a 750K investment. A percentage of one player every ten years still makes this a very good investment.

The Bears are notoriously low in the area of Medical testing. They have continually drafted players that were “red flagged off of other teams boards.”

So lets see, with better medical testing by the Bears, the team has a different 1st round pick instead of Chris Williams and different second round picks instead of Mark Bradley, Dan Bazuin and Gaines Adams.

How much is a first round pick and three second round picks worth?

by DaleHalas on Oct 7, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

You make a good point

IMO- I don’t think you screen players for something that a super low percentage of people would have.

From Hayes
Anderson was considered a co-starter with Israel Idonije. With him gone and with Tim Jennings replacing Zack Bowman against the Giants, Danieal Manning and Chris Harris were the only remaining defensive starters against the Giants who were drafted during the Angelo-Lovie Smith era.

That’s sick. But I thought Briggs was one of theirs? I suppose I have a whole interwebs I could look it up on but…zzz.

To say they want to improve their pass-rush sure sounds like a lie. I wonder if he did something to piss off Marinelli and Smith.

Angelo’s development of our O-line can be summed up in one word – neglectful. I’m a little surprised that he hasn’t tried to trade one of our high 2011 draft picks for a D-lineman.

How many of our starting O-lineman are really starting caliber – other than maybe Kreutz and Garza on a “good” day? What we really have is 5 backups starting for us. And when they go up against a solid D-line, they are totally exposed.

Maybe if they put the Rays in something besides a dome… but since most people who live in Florida are from the Midwest they don’t really care about the Rays. But once the Cubs are out of the playoffs, which usually doesn’t take long, I don’t care what happens in baseball cause it’s football season.

I think it would be well worth evaluating our ability to defeat the hapless Panthers w/o Jay.

He clearly gives us the best chance to win this game, but I wonder if the squad can get it done without him. I think we can get it done – I figure the OL owes Jay a week off anyhow, they all took off last week.
