WCG Honors the Anniversary of Walter Payton's Death

On this day in 1999, the world lost the greatest professional football player of all time, and one of the greatest men to ever walk the earth.  Football was what Walter Payton did for a living, and it gave him a platform to communicate who he was as a person to the rest of the world.

If you do some digging around, it won't take long to find out from people that knew him (coaches, teammates, friends, family members) who Walter Payton really was, and how much of an impact he made on people's lives.  He was, above anything else, a beautiful human being.

Today, we honor his memory.  Thank you, Walter, for being who you were, and for giving so much of yourself to the world.  We are honored to have been able to witness your impact, and will always cherish our memories.

Will always be my favorite of all time

and the standard to which all RB will be measured by. Eventhough he left us way to soon his memory and spirit will live on through us. I don’t care what the record books say he is and will always be the all time leading rusher in the NFL hands down.

Allow me to clarify.

Walter is my favorite player of all time. Ditka to me is, well he’s Ditka so no explanation is necessary.

I wrote this in yesterday's Bears Den and was surprised that no one commented...

on the official NFL website there was a clip from the NFL network with Warren Sapp, Steve Mariucci, Michael Irvin, and Marshall Faulk on a panel with Rich Eisen. They were each submitting their 5 best NFL players of all time to coincide with the NFL Networks Top 100 countdown and not one of them had Walter (or Butkus) in their Top 5 of all time.

Trying to pick the best player of all time is, I understand, not going to be a unanimous choice but for Walter Payton not to appear in any of those morons Top 5 is absolutely ridiculous. If he doesn’t show up in the Top 5 of the network on this week’s final countdown, everyone in Chicago should boycott that network forever.

Remember they are allowed to have their opinion even if it's wrong.

And it is. Very wrong.

We can't boycott the NFL network

We have to watch the Bears play the dolphins on it in 17 days or so.

is that you will be watching the game with me, when the Bears lose :)

No, the worst is

listening to you whine when the Bears win because of some terrible call by a referee.

Naw

Lovie would just challenge the official’s terrible call agains the Fins but then not challenge a terrible call against the Bears, helping Miami to the win.

by cubman987 on Nov 1, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

No

Miami’s special teams will avoid kicking to Devin Hester all game, but then accidentally punt to him at the end.

He will return it, but then just before the goalline the ball will get knocked out of his hands. The officials will rule it a TD anyways, and then a referee who is in nantucket will say that he saw the TD, and the call on the field will stand.

If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

Writer at windycitygridiron.com {-/-} http://www.twitter.com/kdoggers

by Kev H on Nov 1, 2010 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

No

The call would be ruled correctly down at the 1 inch line. Despite replays showing that Hester clearly was not in, Lovie would challegne the play and lose. Then the Bears would try to run Cutler in the endzone where the ball clearly crosses the goal line before Cutler fumbles it. The Dolphins recover what is ruled a fumble, and despite the fact that Lovie still has a challenge left and despite the fact that every replay shows the ball cross the goal line, Lovie does not challenge, allowing the Dolphins to take possession of the ball up by 3 with 2:01 left in the game. The Bears then go into a prevent defense, allowing Miami to easily drive down the field and run the clock out. Lovie attempts to challenge a Dolphins first down with :50 left since he doesn’t understand what a challenge is or how it works, and since it was a 15 yard gain on 3rd and 1 the booth decides a review is clearly not needed. Dolphins win an epic 3-0 game for their first home win of the season.

Nope, they put their individual lists up on the screen and Walter's name was never mentioned...

neither was Dick Butkus. He was voted the best defensive player ever a few years ago but these guys don’t even mention him but have people like Deon Sanders and Ray Lewis listed. Unbelievable.

Always

ALWAYS loved when he flew in the air to get the first down or TD…..Thought it was one of the coolest things in the world……

That's it! See, at first I thought it was hate, too. Hate was all I knew, it built my world, it imprisoned me, taught me how to eat, how to drink, how to breathe. I thought I'd die with all my hate in my veins. But I realized it was loathing.

The day he passed was one of the saddest days of life. Felt like a family member passed away as he was my idol growing up. There will never be another Walter Payton..Ever.

anyone know

where to get video or audio of Dan Hampton’s memorial speech for Sweetness? Can’t stand the way Hamp mutters around his opinions as of late, but that was truly a great speech.

I wish I could have seen him play

But the highlights are good enough. What a great player and a great man.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

"We feel very good about this football team. We felt very good about our football teams in the past and it's no different. You've got to go out there and you've got to do it."

The reason I'd say he is the best football player is

swap him with other positions (not o line lb or d line) and he could probably play all of them pretty decently, whereas I doubt Jerry Rice or Joe Montana could play RB.

I grew up knowing Walter...

as a neighbor and my personal hero. IMO, he is the single greatest all around player in NFL history. He excelled at everything he tried. He was a genuinely great guy and as normal a person as any superstar athlete could be. We miss you Walter.

Payton was the more complete football player. Remember Payton was the emergency QB and he could kick too if it was an all out disaster. Long live Sweetness!

Every NFL player...

needs to watch this and tape after tape of this amazing man. Athlete, teammate, husband, father, son…all around wonderful human being.

Humility is a part of success, Walter embodied everything that was good about professional football, today all they know is money and me, me, me…

The one and only regret from the 85 season was that Walter didnt get a TD in the SB…

RIP, there will NEVER be another like you!

My personal hero too. I only saw him at the end of his career, but the greatest of all-time. Any sport, ever. He was a guy you could look up to, because he was so humble off the field. I wish I could have seen his whole career. In regard to the NFL network show, how he’s not #1 would be a mystery to me. I remember reading stories about him that he could throw 80 yards and kick 50+ yard FGs. There was even a story that we ran out of DBs in a game early in his career and he offered to play DB. if it would help the team win. The reason I am a football fan and a Bears fan today. There will never be another Walter Payton.

The greatest RB of all time.

Emmit Smith didn’t deserve to break Walter’s record.

Walter Payton is the reason I fell in love with football and became a Bears fan.

I’m not American. Could have taken or left American Football, but when I saw Sweetness run, I was hooked for life. A drummer. A singer. A joker. A family man. Gentle. Beastly. Humble. Wicked. There wasn’t anything in fooball he couldn’t do. He could punt it, kick it, throw it, tackle, and of course run it beautifully, gracefully, yet just as easily switch from prancing like a deer to lowering his head and charging like a bull, refusing to run out of bounds. He’d run a hundred yards across a field and back just to make a one yard loss. Worked harder, played harder. No silly celebrations, no looking like an idiot for doing your job. Class the whole way through, he was a true gentleman and the greatest football player that ever lived in my lifetime. Never die easy, never give in, never give up.

You were one of a kind, Walter. Rest in peace my friend.
