What a great game,

I was a little worried when I saw that most of the analysts on ESPN picked the Bears to win, everyone but Tom Waddle. Best game of the season so far.

expert picks and the vegas lines are two things i don’t worry about. hard to pick against an adrian peterson team.

Waddle said he’s managed to get it wrong for the past few weeks, so had his fingers crossed while picking against them…

Heads up: Cutler actually threw 2 INT's, not 1

But I thought it was a very well played game by the Bears, barring the one stupid typical Cutler INT in the endzone, we played solid all around. Nothing could be done about the 1st tipped INT, so I push that aside. The D played well as always, came up with timely turnovers and Hester was on top of his game all day, from the very beginning you could tell he was feeling good.

6-3 sounds great right now, and with a short week ahead, I am pleased to see the dolphins are having troubling QB issues that should allow for us to get a win down in Miami on Thrusday!

Go BEARS!

Best game of the year

in my view – even with the Green Bay win (and GB is a better team than the Queens). Defense was stellar, special teams was/were spectacular, and other than (as mentioned already) the typical bonehead Cutler INT throw in the end zone, the offense looked great and playcalling was shockingly good.

It makes me all the more frustrated about the Seahawks and especially the Redskins games, because if we just won one of those, we’d have a bit of cushion going into this very difficult stretch here on out. But those are rainclouds that I should be ignoring for now – Go Bears, 6-3!!!!

If only yards were points...

however, I do entirely agree with you. You can’t argue with something in the rule book.

Now, come the 2nd meeting with the Lions, I’m not going to discount any chance that they have to beat us. We’re 3-0 in the division so far, and as badly as I want it to be 6-0 by the end of the season, we could very well be 3-3.

Of course, if Jay doesn’t get sacked 83 times per game, I think we can beat anyone.

Or there was still 30 seconds left in the game

With the best returners in the league it was definitely doable to get Gould in range.

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

by propheteer on Nov 15, 2010 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

I like how we did not beat ourselves.

Jay played a pretty solid game except for the INT in the Red Zone. However, it seems that Jay is deciding to move outside the pocket more in order to buy him and his receivers some time to get open down field. i thought the defense played really solid except for the two mental errors on the deep passes. Special teams were excellent as usual. Mike Martz seems to be calling shorter passes with more roll outs. I really liked to pass/run ratio. O-line is starting to improve due to more experience, continuity, play calling and Cutler’s scrambling ability.

It was good

And it is shaping up to indicate where the weaknesses are

Knox/Hester/Bennett are looking good. Our DL and LB were good.

Our secondary is increasingly looking in need of help and is our poor YPC due to the RBs or the OL?

Probably a little of both

But I’m glad Chester Taylor had a pretty good game. As far as I’m concerned, Forte needs the competition. I’ve always thought we had a better running unit when we had a healthy Adrian Peterson (ya know, ours, not theirs).

by seitori on Nov 14, 2010 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

It was nice to see a solid game from all phases.

I thought it was one of the best games Cutler has played as a Bear, except for the one red zone pick, but the key to the game, to me, was our ability to convert 3rd downs. Sustained drives were the reason that the Defense was able to look so dominant and fly around because they were fresh throughout the game. Sometimes we (and Martz) forget what a balanced, sustained offense can do for the defensive side of the ball.

My take

Great game, great win, we are, as the saying goes, in control of our own destiny. If we can take care of business we can make it into the playoffs.
-Hester had 185 total yards – He played great, the TD reception he had was mostly all him, his returns were outstanding.
-Cutler played very well despite the one endzone TD that everyone has already mentioned.
-How about the o-line, only gave up 1 sack again, they really seem to be coming together.
-Another balanced attack, loved it. I love Martz’s balanced game plans, if we hadn’t remained balanced the Kellen Davis TD wouldn’t have worked.
-Let’s take care of the Dolphins.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

"We feel very good about this football team. We felt very good about our football teams in the past and it's no different. You've got to go out there and you've got to do it."

Ok I've let things settle for a few hours and I have to say...

That I’m ECSTATIC!! That was a great win and not to be underestimated. Hell even Steve Rosenbloom had to give it up to the Bears tonight on his blog. What’s got me really excited is this defense. It’s back and is seriously in ‘06 form. The secondary was our biggest worry this offseason but they’ve held up. Hester is having a great season and had his most dominating performance ever and that’s without scoring a TD.

Jay is the key. That pick in the endzone reminds me that Jay is going to take chances and still needs to be reigned in from time to time. The same guy who can thread a needle to Olsen for a TD is the same guy who threw that dumb pick. But he’s a beast and it’s going to be up to him to learn how to win this year. It’s time for him to grow up and protect the ball if he wants to be a playoff and Championship QB.

Thursday is a BIG game and hopefully we won’t take Miami’s QB situation for granted. It’s a blessing it’s Thursday. If we win we put pressure on not only GB but the rest of the NFC. Time to get on the bandwagon and time to give Lovie Smith some credit. Like him or not, he gets this team to the playoffs and he’ll be Coach of the year.

Yeah but it worked!

Great win...

my quick thoughts:
1. Cutler had 1 bad throw all day, the INT in the endzone; other INT is on the WR.
2. Forte is great running outside, very bad running inside.
3. Knox still needs to go after the football; not sold on his WR skills yet.
4. Hester is better on ST and limited use on offense; he ran a drag route for a TD from the slot, finally!
5. Olsen manned up today; even as a blocker.
6. Nice to see R Davis and K Davis contribute on offense; back-ups are important in the playoffs.
7. The o-line continues to improve; their best game of the season so far!
8. Gould’s misses are troubling; hope he is getting them out of the way now and not starting a pattern.
9. D-backfield is a big concern; d-line needs to get better pressure up the middle.
10. Big win for Lovie; gotta give him the credit when it’s earned.
11. DA showed up and played well. The Bears need his presence on the field; hope he’s out of the doghouse.
12. Don’t oversell this win, the Vikings have quit on Chilly…still, this was a solid victory by the whole team for the entire game. Best win of the season to date!

Look. The whole line sucks.

Anyone who doesn’t see that is just chugging kool aid. No one is saying Louis is awesome, or Shaffer is awesome, they all suck. Kreutz included by the way. He’s done. Omiyale, Webb, Williams was our first round draft pick … at tackle! When our backs go into the line there’s just nowhere to go. Kreutz can’t open up holes, or pull wide with speed, ditto Garza. Williams has been playing guard for five minutes and Webb can’t pass block to save Cutler’s life. Cutty is a cat on a hot tin roof in that pocket. Anyone happy with that line is on prozac.

They only allowed one sack. They've only allowed a few sacks in the last two games.

We moved the ball on the ground better than Minnesota did with Adrian Peterson. Last I checked Minnesota was still pretty good against the run. We’re showing improvement. Is this line great? No. Is it even decent? Maybe. Is it improving? And I was sober and I’m not on prozac but you keep calling names and acting like your opinion is better than everyone else’s. They do suck

But – they didn’t play bad in this particular game. And all I’m saying is this – I think Tice and Co. probably got as much you can get out of this group the past 2 games, or so. They’ve finally settled on the best group that they can field out of what they have to work with. Going forward (at least for this season) this is the probably the starting 5 that we’re gonna see the rest of the way. These are probably the guys that give us the best chance of protecting Cutler and running the ball.

Don’t get me wrong, though – I still think that we need to address the line (early and often) in the draft next year.

between Williams and Omi is the decider between Williams “owning” and Omi “having no answer for” Allen? I thought Omi had a solid, if unspectacular game against Allen.

RE: Webb, we knew pass-blocking is not his strong suit. I was reluctant to throwing him out there at first, but he really does run-block well for a 7th round rookie. Work on his lateral movement and Webb has a chance to succeed.

Probably meant it in the same way as Ray Edwards owned Webb...

but Edwards got nothing for beating Webb like a rented mule on passing downs.

But even then, was there so much as a peep out of Allen on that side? Most of the game Allen was not a factor; all the pressure was against the right side of the line, especially Webb.

It's not about sacks!

It’s about pressure continuous ly on every play. Did anyone watch the game sober? I think that’s the problem when people post after games, they were drinking and have a faklse image of what happened. On Monday all I read was how great our line looked, how poised Cutler was, I couldn’t believe it. Cutler was putting up bricks all day, missed on a bunch of wide open opportunites, the line gave him a couple of plays to stand in there bu that was it. Seriously, watch them sober one week.

Oh I do, don't worry.

But name another time when you heard Jared Allen’s name without either “hasn’t done anything all game” or “has been remarkably quiet this game.”

This game, like Buffalo, was Jay using mobility to escape pocket pressure. It’s hard to ask for perfect protection like you want, the line just has to give Jay enough time to drop back and move. He’s done that.

Agreed with a lot

2. Forte and Taylor are too similar … Unga might be too slow and just a full back. If we were to see MIKEL LESHOURE in the draft in Round2, there would be a lot of value in drafting a guy who runs between the tackles

7. If the Vikes have quit then it may be a false dawn for the OL. Allen has had a shocking season. I still don’t think Omiyale is a legit LT, and this is a priority in the offseason. However if when we make the playoffs we’ll be drafting in the range of this years candidates. I still would like Angelo to be more proactive and seeing what players might be on other teams practise squads including guys like Xavier Fulton

9. Fortunately free agency is deep here. And there are some nice smaller school players who will be around. With Bennett, Knox and now Arsomashudu (?) stepping up, maybe WR is lessening as a need? We may target Cofield in free agency to add to the tackle depth.

Agree with all 12 points though

The real issue I have with this is that you say things that are clearly not true and then try to dismiss everyone else as drunks? wildly inaccurate? 22-35 and 3 TDs is wildly inaccurate.

I’m beginning to think you are a bitter Packers fan trying to bring down the high of the fans of the NFC North leading Bears that beat the green and yellow flamers in week 3. Why? Becasue I cannot see how someone who was actually a fan of a team….any team…..could continually disparage his own team with hyperbole and degrade the team he supposedly loves constantly after wins.

Here’s a tidbit for you…….if Jay throws 50 INTs and has a 45% completion percentage over the rest of the season but still manages to do enough to win games, which of these stats will matter to you? The INTs? The completion percentage? Or the Wins? I wonder, because when the Bears win, you seem even more aggravated. That sounds more like a Packers fan to me.

For me, the elephant in the room is...

Penalties. I’m surprised no one’s mentioned it yet. This was a poorly officiated game, with a couple of missed holding calls in particular against the Vikes among the two bad calls. One was Percy Harvin’s performance on that underthrown ball that fooled not one but TWO officials to flag for Pass Interference, and the other was the chop block that was purely accidental. I suppose I can understand the PI call (or at least them getting duped into it), but as far as I’m concerned, you don’t throw out 15 yard penalties willy-nilly like that.

On top of that was the two bad (i.e., legit) penalties on Kreutz. Daryl Johnston pointed this out on the telecast after the second one. Both penalties had zero bearing on the play and were big mistakes. I don’t know if he’s getting bloodthirsty out there or what, but that’s got to stop. I don’t remember him having a history of it, but I don’t have the best recollection.

Overall though, I’m happy our defense is at a point where Jay throwing a bad ball into the end zone won’t kill us. There were only 3 points left on the field there, but the special teams play and the offense are doing just enough to get by with this defense, just like in the ‘06-’07 season. It would be a tough playoff run, but I think we’ve got a great shot at getting in.

by seitori on Nov 14, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

The Bears did

put up a lot of legit penalites, and Kreutz’s were probably the most glaring.

There were certainly uncalled penalties on the Vikings, I think there were two obvious holds against Bears rushers on Favre’s big TD pass. We won though, so I’ll take it.

But the Bears were what, 120 yards in penalties? They played fantastically, but maybe they need to throttle back a touch and be a little more careful.

Take out the two bad calls and it’s 9 for 59. Looks better, but yeah, still too high. Olin’s block in the back just left me shaking my head. Refs don’t often miss that one, and it’s something that’s come up on special teams, too.

O-Line's been better last couple of games

Vikes were able to get some pressure, but not much. When they did get pressure, Jay was able to extend the play. My initial impression was that C. Williams was the weak link. Webb struggled some, not unexpected for a 7th round small-school rookie. Run defense has been solid all year, and the Vikes are a running team (at least that’s what they should be at this point). Would still like to see more DA, but Knox was able to get open a few times. Hester showed he doesn’t need to catch THAT many balls to be an important contributer. Bennett=Booker? Nice to see Olsen go into traffic and attack the ball for that TD. Saw most of the game but didn’t see either of Jay’s INTs, so I can’t say how bad they were. It looks like his accuracy has returned, though. I’d like to see if Melton can be the 3-technique.

Nope, there’s always some kind of magic reason for a loss, and it’s not at all limited to Favre or the Vikings, don’t think that…but it’s annoying. Why can’t someone just come out and say “we got beat, time to get ready for next week.”

Now, given the standings, and Favre’s clear “I’m not coming back again” stance, do you think the Vikes move back to TJack and see what they have to worth with in him, or just ride Favre out for the season and plan to spend a draft pick on a QB?

But I bet he secretly blames Chilly for this loss.

Michael Irvin made (for once) an interesting comment on the pregame show. Since Favre arrived the media and supposedly the team has been questioning Childress and he is coming off as a bad coach. Then you look at what Favre did in New York. His great start, followed up by a terrible finish got Mangini fired. His last couple of years at Greenbay had that team in minor disarray. Any other player with that background (ie Moss or TO) would be called a “cancer” to their team. Favre gets a pass. Why?

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.

I've been on Childress since he arrived.

And the media has as well. Mainly because he introduced himself as a truthful coach and has dodged questions continuously. And for an offensive coach, he’s shown no ability to adapt his offense to the strengths of his players. Maddening.

The Vikings...

simply miss Rice. The Vikings WRs played badly yesterday. Harvin is only about 80% and Shiancoe needs longer cleats. We know all about WRs who don’t go after the ball or fall down on their routes here in Chicago.

It wasn't just Rice.

By the 4th quarter, we were down to Greg Lewis, Greg Camarillo and Hank Baskett for receivers with the rest down with injuries. Even though we were down by two scores, I feel it would’ve been better to go to a 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB formation, instead of the 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB we were using, simply because the players were better.

That being the case, our D’s secondary has also been destroyed by the injury bug. If we’re giving up 27 points a game, odds are we’re already hosed.

Gonna be a long seven weeks.

Think of it this way...

You have a good core team, some obvious holes to fill in the draft and FA, and likely a new staff (Les Frasier ain’t half bad). Stay away from aging QBs (McNabb for instance) and the Vikings can be competitive rather quickly; it’s not rebuilding, it’s reloading.

I love how it's all about the Queens.

You don’t hear many pundits saying what a great game the Bears played.

This was by FAR their best overall performance of the year. All 4 phases were in sync – O, D, ST, and Coaching. SHOCKING!!!

It’s only one game, but should the continue to show more improvement, they will be legit contenders in the post-season. I like our chances.

If you don't ask, you don't get. So get on with it already.

You know...

I’m watching the Pats/Stoolers game, and Tom Brady is in the middle of his best Phillip Rivers-esque tanrum, and it’s going on and on but all the announcers can say is that it’s passion and a desire for excellence and I fully expect Collinsworth to dash out to the bench and start brushing Tom’s hair for him…

But Jay makes one frowny-face and he’s the worst QB to ever play. Just…GRRRR!

I think it might have to do with Cutler not having a winning season or winning a playoff game…..Doing it while losing is placing blame on them not himself (even though he has done that in the past this season specifically. Even today said he trusted his arm to much and would have nightmares about the redzone INT)…..Plus Cutler is a polarizing figure IMO…..Just has that jerk look to him…..but eh whatever….Have a winning season win a playoff game or 2 and it might go away…..

This was the most complete game the Bears have played

And I have been waiting for a complete game for me to consider them serious “for real” contenders. But now I’ve seen it and I’m starting to believe. I would still like to see a complete game against a winning opponent but for now this team looks good.

The way this season is playing out

it doesn’t seem like win/loss records matter nearly as much as they typically would. Browns over Pats? Look how the Giants ate our faces, but the piss-poor Cowboys thumped them tonight.

Any team can win any week, and this season seems to be working really hard to drive that fact home.

The only thing I know for sure is that I like what the Bears did today. If they can build on that, they’re going to win several more games and they will certainly be contending for a playoff spot.

by Virto on Nov 14, 2010 10:08 PM CST up reply actions

7 games left

and I honestly think we can go 5-2 (realistically) in those seven.

Of course, anything can happen, but our chances look a lot better than they did in the pre-season, or even a couple of weeks ago.

by Virto on Nov 14, 2010 10:20 PM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking

The best way to judge a team is to throw out their best and worst performances and average the rest. But even that doesn’t do justice to what this season is like. It’s just the wackiest and most competitive season perhaps, ever.

And even bottom feeding teams look competitive, except Carolina. This has been one of the most exciting seasons in my opinion i have seen in a long time. Red Zone helps i can watch so many at one time too lol.

how down the league is this year, and I’m with you. I think this has been one of the most enjoyable seasons in a while, with a lot more even play throughout the league. QAnd I don’t think it’s because the top has dropped as much as it is that the bottom has risen. The Lions, Raiders, Chiefs, Rams and even the Bills are playing very well, even in losses.

It’s been a fun year to watch.

Penalties were a little concerning

If they were limited, the Bears may have won by three TDs. Cutler obviously made a bad throw which cost the team going up two scores. Forte had a big drop on the first drive that could’ve ended up in points. All in all it was a good win cause the O-line continues to play better, and the defense played like gangbusters again. Nail in the Vikes coffin is very nice to see.

I tend to agree with the adage...

that a team simply has to make enough plays that bad penalty calls don’t make the difference. However, I find it hard to believe the ’queens (who average about 2 penalties more per game) had only 2 penalties in that game. The Bears were committing penalties on the O-line, which, IMO, is better than giving up sacks. Honestly, a few of the calls were a bit phantom. I agree with your concerns, but the penalties were not untimely (say holding on a kick return) and seem to be more about effort than disorganization.

The early holding calls were mostly garbage

The refs even tried to penalize the Bears when it was the Vikes who committed the penalty. It was in the first half but can’t remember what it was for.

Liked the play today (outside of penalties and Red Zone Int)

O-line should only get better barring injury. Defense is playing well, good to see Wright out there. Actually glad to see Roach is still on the team, for some reason I didn’t think he was and LB depth was starting to concern me after we got rid of J Williams, HH went on IR, and Briggs was playing injured. Guess I wasn’t paying attention on that one.

Favorite part of the performance for me was the offense being able to convert that last first down and end the game with kneel downs. We’ve seen the offense fail to get a first down when it needed one to close out a half/game and we were forced to send the defense back out there. Nice for the O to be able to sustain drives today.

Applying the Brakes

I admit I loved the game, I sat down to watch it with some trepidation not knowing what to expect. Lets remember that the Vikings are a deeply flawed team this year. With out receivers Favre is a liability rather than an asset. Without Favre we would have seen a lot more AP, take away Favre’s TO’s and add 20 more AP carries and our D could have been very weary come the 4th Q and our O would have found it hard to run a balanced attack with several fewer snaps. We had a 12th man on the field…the natural turf! A great victory, but these guys need to continue to improve, Jay still do a 7 step drop without getting dropped, and he is under a lot of pressure on 5 step drops we are just not going to see the high scoring Air Martz offense this year. The Offense did a great job of keeping our D off the field our D did a great job of getting themselves off the field. When the game was over I felt that we can beat anyone left on the schedule, but we can also suffer an embarrassing drubbing from any of them. Go Bears!

by Chitownproduct on Nov 15, 2010 5:01 PM CST up reply actions

Tough road ahead ...

Our schedule gets serious now though. Our three remaining divisional games are all on the road. The Steelers of ‘the best defense in the NFL’ just got ripped a new one by the Pats. We have to play the Jets who are 7-2. The Eagles just destroyed the Skins, a team that beat us. 59 points! The Lions can put points on the board, GB away is always tough and the Dolphins have us cursed. Tough.
