Chicago Bears Game Ball of the Week: Devin Hester

We win 27-13 over the Minnesota Vikings. It still tastes delicious, even a day later. After such an important victory, loaded with great performances, there's normally a lot of questions about who should get the game ball, but not this week. One man stepped up and showed why he's one of the most dangerous men on the field at any time.

The recipient of Week 10's game ball is the Windy City Flyer himself, Mr. Devin Hester. Check out his contributions after the jump, along with some Writer Wrap-Up.

Star-divide

Devin Hester vs. the Minnesota Vikings

Touchdowns: 1

Receiving Yards: 38

Punt Return Yards: 46

Kickoff Return Yards: 100

Total All-Purpose Yards: 185

Truly amazing--he could be a real difference maker over the last half of the season--let's hope it continues.

--

Bears get over the hump, make Favre look over the hill.

Devin Hester an all-purpose force for a day.

Bears give us a first half that even a cynic could love.

3 Bears: Briggs hot, Kreutz cold, Idonije right.

Vikings pay the price for kicking to Bears' Hester.

Cutler reinforces confidence of his teammates, coaches.

Positively beyond belief.

Martz's offense shows its potential.

And then there were two: Bears and Pack.

an answer to David Haugh question "Is Orton-esque appropriate?"

NO!!

Orton as a Bear completed 505 passes of 913 attempts for 5319 yards
He threw 30 TD’s and 39INT’s and had a QB rating of 70.0

In a Bears uniform Orton was at best a competent backup QB if you want to point to what he has done in a Bronco’s uniform just remember Jay went to a probowl in a Bronco’s uniform.

Personally

not seeing this game manger crap that the media is spewing (just heard mcneil show go off on that saying Cutler is being paid big money and should NOT be a “game manager” like he has been the last 2 games)….I mean I still see Cutler not only taking chances but throwing passes longer than 10 yards that the “game managers” normally throw…..but what ever…..

I will never understand why a "game manager" is a bad thing

Manning manages the game too, by making the right play at the right time.

Isn’t that the whole friggin point?

and I don’t recall them gushing over what a “game manager” he is.

by 62bearsthe best on Nov 15, 2010 4:51 PM CST up reply actions

thats what i'm saying

“managing the game” is just making the right play at the right time.

thats everyone’s goal. whether you’re peyton or orton or alex smith.

same thing with “product of a system”. if you’re a good player in the right system (ie: you have a coach who knows what he’s doing and putting a player in the right spot to make the right play)… thats everyone’s goal.

why is that used as an insult? Seriously. Drives me batty.

Call it whatever you want MSM

Cutler keeps “managing” wins and they can suck on it. Hooefully the Bears brass can get him into rhythm and not killed and he will be able to start becoming slightly more aggressive, in good ways.

by TheMan1 on Nov 15, 2010 5:30 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Cutler could have tossed two or three picks yesterday.

I’m just saying. I saw a few that hit the other team in the hands. I think he was a little bit lucky on a couple of those not to get picked off, and the RZ pick was a classic groan-inducer.

don't be a hater

You are incorrect Sir. I watch the game again on nfl replay and the only time the vikings had their hands on a JC pass that did not end up a INT was the play right before the pick in the endzone. Other than those two plays JC was outstanding.

Either you missed something or NFL Replay did.

Because, again, there were a couple of passes that Cutler threw into double or triple coverage that the Vikings did get their hands on. My point is simply that a game manager is not a bad thing. And good old Neckbeard was a respectable QB for us, average arm strength and all. I’ll point to yesterday’s game against the Chiefs as an example. Cutler’s got a better arm and better mobility, for sure, but Orton was a decent starter as a Bear, not just a competent backup.

And yeah, like Dave says. Daring to question the greatness that is Cutler after a win (or not calling for Lovie’s head on a pike after a loss) doesn’t make anyone a hater.

I'm OK with just knowing I'm right.

I’m pretty sure other people on this site saw the same thing.

As it happens, Cutler’s proclivity for tossing it at the opposing team was echoed again last night. Still like the guy and think overall he’s a good QB. But it’s pretty laughable to call him highly accurate or a good decision maker. He’s a gunslinger, pure and simple.

by oripunk3485 on Nov 19, 2010 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

The difference with Orton now and then

is his ability to be accurate with deep passes. The only thing Cutler has on him at this point is mobility.

Though I could've done without the Orton-esque crap, this did give me a chuckle. From the Haugh article
“We were getting ripped about too much pass and run but it’s hard to get anything going when you’re not converting on third downs,” said the Bears head coach who doesn’t read the newspapers. “Now, we’re converting.”

I pretty much liked everything about this game… Hester is being used properly, Offense is showing improvement, Brad Maynard is the Greg Maddux of punting, we were tremendous on third down (both sides of the ball).

For me the questions are:

How does this team handle the success of a key game?

Why is Richard Dent not in the Hall of Fame yet? ;)

I am looking forward to Thursday...

with cautious optimism. I have to call out Jimmy Miller again this week in this article.

He end his article with this gem:

This is not a lot of time to game plan. Lovie is always well prepared with the schedule to have his team ready.

I can think of a things that I can credit Lovie with. Being prepared is NOT one of his strengths.

All in all, great win at home and in the division. The Dolphins are beatable and the Bears are in first place. The Bears are healthy overall, so go get this win dammit! The only thing left for the Bears to prove they are contenders is to beat a good team like the Pats, Jets, or Eagles. Bear Down!

we should win the rest of the games on this schedule, or at least the home ones- thanks to the 12th Blade of Grass

I love ESPN

ripping on the Bears for “losing” to the lions and barely beating the bills (who mind you took it to the ravens and chiefs the previous weeks) then dub the jets the best NFL team because they barely beat a bad broncos team and beat “POWER HOUSE” teams like the lions and browns in OT…..

The defense is lights out. Cutler limited the mistakes. Forte was Forte for whatever that’s worth. Hester is back to his rediculous self. Looks like 2005 all over again. Just with a more capable qb. Super Bowl bound, hopefully with a Jan. 1986 result.

Especially scoring on offense, and setting up scores with his timely returns. He actually looked like a real NFL WR on that TD catch.

Did anyone catch the Melton interview on CSN thats been airing the past 24 hours

Claims he played some fullback in college, we could use a beast like him on goal line stands. Remember the fridge on Goalline. Just a thought for a possible new look in red zone down the stretch. It sure would fool the defense as no one would expect that one. Only question was Melton any good carrying the ball?
