Quick Recap: Bears Dominate Dolphins
The Chicago Bears showed up for Thursday Night Football, beating the Miami Dolphins 16-0. The offense made enough happen to put points on the board, and the defense satisfied expectations by being aggressive and causing turnovers.
Quick Numbers:
Jay Cutler: 16/ 25, 156 yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT
Tyler Thigpen: 17/29, 187 yds, 0 TDs, 1 INT
Matt Forte: 25 rushes, 97 yds, 1 TD
Julius Peppers: 6 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 pass deflection
We can probably compete with the Packers and Giants at this point... who is ready to rumble in the 2010 playoffs (playoffs?!)?

Urlacher being interviewed

I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus
Not that I wasn't aware but... Peppers is a BEAST!!!
And Urlacher has to be the frontrunner for Comeback player of the Year. Thought Forte looked good, the OL and Cutler could have been a bit better and the D looked like it’s looked most of the year: Amazing. Really wish Hester would’ve gotten his return TD back home in Miami. It’ll come soon enough. Bear Down!
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Not that I agree,
but I think that most people are giving come back player of the year to Vick. Hopefully Urlacher will put Vick on his back and cement his getting Come back player of the year.
I would say ask his parole officer to be sure.

You're right, last year was the first year back from his "hiatus"....
he shouldn’t get a bye because he didn’t play well when he actually came back. If he gets that award this year, it would be something that ESPN and NFL Network fixed/rigged.
The Comeback Player of the Year Award....
Has nothing to do with actually being gone due to injury or misc other reasons. It is given for returning to form after previously falling. Vick fits that bill in a big way, and as much as I love Brian and would like to see him get the award, Vick has earned it at this point in the season.
He may also be earning the NFL MVP award if he continues on this path.
Personally, I hope Brian stands right in the middle of that path next week and introduces Mr Vick to the beginning of the decent that lands Vick right back smack dab in the middle of the QB pack. I don’t wish Vick ill, but I wish for Chicago to win, and for Brian to come out of that game leading the pack for the CPOTY award.

Has anyone ever won who played the entire year before?
Not arguing, I just don’t remember anyone winning who didn’t miss a good portion of the prior season due to injury or other reasons.
Don't have to look far.....
Chad Pennington in 2008. Chad’s actually won the award twice, in ’06 and ’08. He won it in ’06 for coming back from injury and performing at a high level, but he won the award in ’08 for high level of play after being benched by the Jets for leading the team to a 1-7 start in favor of Kellen Clemons. He played in week 15 again after Clemons was injured and played well, but was benched again when Clemons came back the following week.
After that season, Pennington went to the Dolphins and led them to the 11-5 turnaround and won the CPOTY award.

or the speed of your typing ability in looking this stuff up.
Either way, good call.
A bit of both.
I knew Pennington won it twice (I am a fan of his and what he has done even with all the injuries. I thought he could have been HOF great if his body had cooperated) but i had to look up the years.

We sold three of our regular games to buy the skyline suite
It was awesome all you could eat and drink, it was warm, and in the suite that night was Otis Wilson, fridge, Keith Van Horne, Mongo, Shaun Gayle, Fencik and one or 2 others. We got a great group picture with them that I should upload. Before the game you get to go on the field and we were standing right where vick was warming up yelling to him that he would be running for his life and that Urlacher would be on him all nite. He just smiled, good thing it came true.

I have a picture we took with Mongo, Otis Wilson, and shaun gayle all huddled up. They were all pretty good about things there. Better be nice for $800 per ticket. I have been pretty fortunate with all the bears stuff though, married into great season tickets 25 years ago, in 85 I worked at Nicks sports page in Dolton, IL as a second job and worked the “Mike Tomczak show” for the whole year and met most of the 85 team on those monday nights between 84-85. Hampton, Mongo, thayer, Hilgy, Marshall, Butthead, Covert, Van Horne, Suhey on and on..very lucky and I have lots of stories from those nights..

I remember it
I was watching it at my buddies house and we were going nuts. That was probably the only times the fans got excited about Rex Grossman. But I remember Mora going nuts over a call and he nearly hit the ref and we were all screaming at the TV for them to eject him. I also remember the game plan was totally “54, you’re going to spy on 7 all night, don’t let him do anything.” What a game.
"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

Wouldn't have guessed...
That Cutler and Thigpen had nearly identical stat lines watching that game. Time of possession and running yards were key. Schlereth’s on ESPN right now shredding Miami’s coaching staff over not running the ball.
Have to admit
that I was a little surprised by Miami’s play calling too, Schlereth is still a tool though.

I think it would be tough to get too critical of the Miami coaching staff...
they went into the game banged up and literally used every lineman they had on the active roster during the game due to injuries. Their tough luck, and I’ll still take the win that’s part of the NFL experience, but they really ended up playing with almost half of their actual team.
Whoever said our LB's can't shred blocks?
Roach, Lach and Briggs OMG, they were killing the phins all day long. Miami looked liked they didn’t even wanna run the play half the time.
by Chitownproduct on Nov 18, 2010 10:36 PM CST reply actions
That's been one of my biggest complaints about Urlacher.
In the past, that is. He’s been much better about getting off blocks and not getting sealed outside, at least from what I’ve been able to see.

he’s a rookie, and Wake is a beast. Still, yes, he played pretty poorly.

He's still a work in progress
Martz allowed him to go one on one with Wake, and he got beat everywhere. I still really like his upside.

What's the upside of beng slow?
You can’t teach/coach that out of him. Every single week it’s the same. Guys just run around him. Cutler either gets rushed, hit/sacked or Webb holds – on every singl pass play. He’s terrible and he’s the weakest link on our offense. Shaffer or Lance Louis should be put in there, preferably Louis, he’s quicker and can get leverage easier at 6’3. Omiyale’s run blocking has definitely improved – saw him push one guy back about ten yards. Tice has done well, as has Marinelli.
Louis is a guard and Shaffer is not starting material
Webb has been solid up until the Miami game. Grant it, he’s had some penalties, but he has the build and athleticism of a good starting tackle. He’s got good strength, size, long arms, and has a mean-streak; those things you can’t teach, but technique is something Tice can teach the young kid. He’ll improve cause he’s already shown it throughout the season.

There is no offensive lineman that is faster than a LB
A RT has to move his feet and use his size and hand punch to give the QB some time.

Omi was fantastic.
And coming from me, that is astounding. I’ve probably been harder on the linemen than anyone.
I also thought Webb did a better job than people are giving him credit for, consider that he’s a 7th rounder going one on one with a guy who’s been giving veteran tackles fits all year. I’m not saying he was good, but he did better than I expected after I saw Martz was putting him on an island against Wake.

-Peppers dominating, finally (yes some of it was garbage time but I don’t care!)
-Forte had a killer game, over 125 total yards I believe.
-Balanced attack once again proves to be what this team needs.
-I’ll take unspectacular Cutler every week as long as it means wins. I don’t care what ANY writer says, this is all Cutler needs to do to be a good QB, avoid mistakes.
-Cutler made a few dumb throws but again, as long as he is winning WHO CARES?!
-Suck it Miami, I hate the Dolphins. So happy.
-Urlacher says this D is better than ’06 and frankly they are playing like it right now.

One of the female sideline reporters, just prior to the game, said
Brad Maynard almost hit her in the head while he was practicing his punts so, obviously, they plan on kicking away from Devin Hester.
Although, I wouldn’t put it past Jerry Angelo to trade Maynard to Miami and then change his mind right before kickoff. We probably gave up our first round pick next year to get him back……
So what if she was female?

I heard that too, good point by Warner
it kind of makes Billick’s comment about the Bears O not having a play over 20 yds, well, somewhat effing meaningless.
I mean, I’ve got problems with Martz but they would have called a different game later on if the D was folding. They weren’t. And the O moved the chains very well in that big drive that ate up all that time.

i won’t bitch too much about it, because it was about 75% good… but the drive where Forte scored… just about made me break stuff. They were driving, chewing up clock, running the ball like they should, and then went back to pass happy. In fact, only reason that drive didn’t stall was because of an illegal touch on a db. It was just frustrating because I, like you, were really excited to see them managing the clock for once… and thought they had lost that.
Only other thing I’ll put on the negative list for this game was J’Marcus Webb. Wow, did he look bad tonight.

Sort of
that was the same drive, though, where Cutler hit Olsen on two important passes to get the first down. They could have run a bit more, for sure, but most of the pass plays were solid on that drive, I thought.

I can't fault Martz for throwing it in that situation
it was a good time to take a shot and try and catch the "Fins.

Drive started...
with 6 straight runs to get to the Dolphins 38, literally running down the clock and getting first downs too… then they passed 5 of the next 6 plays… including one that went out of bounds. Once is taking a shot. 5 out of 6 is forgetting what you’re supposed to be doing in that spot. Like I said, 75% because they did get back to running it after that and punched it in to ice the game. I know it was only a two score game at that point, but I was smelling shut out when it was 9-0 the way Miami was moving the ball.

Ummm.....forgetting what you are supposed to be doing?
I think scoring was the first thing they were supposed to be doing. Running down the clock is great, but leading by 16 as opposed to 9 is HUGE! Sounds like nit-picking to me, and not even reasonable nit-picking. They scored on that drive. Was the only drive they scored a TD on. And THAT is the drive that you have a problem with?

Worse yet?
You aren’t even right. One the drive in Question, The Bears ran on 10 of the plays and passed on four. Furthermore, The “only reason the drive didn’t stall” penalty was a second down penalty. So, it would have been 3rd and 10, not stall and punt. The Bears started the drive with 6 runs, but the final 3 of those 6 went for all of 2 yards. Martz then called pass to open up the run again, which it did.
In other words, had Martz kept running with 8 in the box defending the run, the drive probably would have stalled, and less clock would have been eaten up, and 7 points would not have been added.
You don’t abandon the air game in the 3rd Quarter of any game that is still in reach. That’s just asking for a loss.

Nice win guys!
Too bad we were so banged up, it might have been a better game otherwise. Now that this game is over I’m back to rooting for the Bears for the rest of the year, and since the playoffs look bleak for the Dolphins at this point, looks like I’ll be rooting for my 2nd favrorite team this post season!
You've had a rough run with injuries
but, damn, Webb is one helluva player. Big play guy on that D.

Likes / Dislikes
Likes:
- Run game. Specifically Forte
- 40 runs. A MARTZ OFFENSE WITH 40 RUNS?!?
- Cutler 7 for 9 for 79 yards on 3rd down passing tonight
- play calling pretty much between the 20s
- O line giving up only 5 sacks since bye
- Bears 3rd down conversions since bye – 28 / 49 for a 57% clip
- D is awesome Peppers is a man beast
- Izzy and Melton stepping up big recently
- Gould banging FGs and deep kickoffs
Dislikes:
- Cutler bad decisions. Already seeing people say he should have had 6 to 8 INTs
- Webb was abused so badly I thought I saw him crying
- Rezone offense / playcalls (fade route to the 6 feet Bennett at the goalline. Really? REALLY!?)
- Feel bad for mia as seeing people say that the Bears beat a D league tonight after thighpen was suppose to shred the Bears D
And thats it….I think…..

Hey nice win...
Cannot argue with success. My quick thoughts:
1. Forte again showed he’s great outside; also played well inside and on pass protection.
2. Great to see Peppers rack up the sacks.
3. Best game of the season for the D-line; even Harris played well.
4. Henry Melton and Marcus Harrison are improving every week.
5. Knox finally got the slant route right!
6. Martz again called a good game; kept Cutler upright.
7. Frankie O was outstanding, Webb is improving a little each week, even C Williams played great.
8. Kreutz will have to be replaced soon, likely his last year as a starter.
9. Gould was back on track.
10. Cutler had a few poor throws, but managed the game well.
11. Take the win, but this team needs to step up huge to play with the Eagles; if the Bears beat the Eagles, they are going to the Super Bowl!
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
agreed, a nice win
I’m not familiar with the Eagles d-line, but the run will need vast improvements. Da Bears line did a decent job against a pretty good d-line for Miami. The D-ends were darned good. Plus, I can see a need to run some clock to keep Vick on the sidelines. The guy has been hot this season & the D will be on task to stop an explosive offense.
Cutlet has to llimit the poor throws. There were around 3 that could have been picked.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, 1/2 pack of cigarettes...it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
As we start playing some of the better teams in the next few weeks
we really need to do better when it comes to scoring TD’s rather than FG’s. Last week we really didn’t take advantage of our field position like we should have and this week we marched all over them but then would screw up when we got close except for the one TD. As we get closer to playoff football we have to improve that part of our game.
On the bright side, our 3rd down conversion rate has improved a lot over the last 2 games and that really helps the defense. I hope we can keep that going.
All in all, a very solid win for us.
Baby steps
at least those were FG’s instead of INT’s or fumbles.
I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus
Good point, after the Washington game those were the drive ending plays come to think of it.
Something else I just noticed, if Minnesota scores anything more than a FG against the Packers this week, the Bears end the weekend with the #1 Defense in points allowed.
Big win...
This was a swing game. Wouldn’t have killed us to lose. If the Bears just take care of their division games, we can look at this game and say it won us the division, because there are absolutely no gimmes left on the schedule.

I liked the workmanlike manner in which they went about winning this game.
They went in knowing all they had to do was play conservatively on offense (I only recall Cutler throwing downfield once, the one that Hester almost had in the endzone), and let the D shut down their running game and the game was over. It’s almost like a game in which they decided they didn’t want to show much for their next opponent. That third quarter was cool, in that I think Miami got maybe 3-6 plays from scrimmage (not counting punts) the whole quarter. They do look like a team growing better all the time.
Unfortunately, much as I want them to keep winning, I’m concerned about the rest of the season. They are inconsistent on offense (the O looked constipated – I know, that’s probably an image we could do without), and that means that in future games, all the pressure will be on defense and special teams. Although those are our strengths (the opening kickoff notwithstanding), I’m concerned about standing up to the Eagles, the Pats and the Pack (the latter on the road). If the Vikes beat the Pack this weekend, they may still have a pulse by the time we see them in the Thunderdome, and that could be a tough game. Detroit is playing everyone close (yes, and losing them all) and that could be a close game.
In other words, I still see that this team has something to prove, though I can’t argue with where they are right now.
Go Bears!

Kind of an either/or scenario
If the Vikes win, like you say, they may carry some of that momentum forward, but at least we’re a game over the Pack.
If they lose—especially if they get crushed by Green Bay—maybe they finally pull the plug Favre and start rebuilding. In that case we’d be playing a team just as banged up as Miami.
Jets too...
Our remaining schedule is brutal. The impact of not having laid an egg in this game is monumental. It’s one of those gravy wins that allow us to lose the rest of our “losable” games and still have a good chance at winning the division. I never expected the team to lose to Seattle and Washington at home when I counted out the wins they’d need to win the division. This wasn’t a game I put in the lock category (until maybe yesterday when they might have needed Patrick Ramsay to suit up at QB for chrissakes), so I’m really feeling a lot better now.
BTW… the Dolphins got only 8 plays from scrimmage in the 3rd quarter. I was saying after it was over that was probably the best quarter the Bears have played on football all season long on both sides of the ball. 10 points and had near complete control of the ball.

Offense looked constipated?
I don’t agree with this at all. The offense looked efficient. They were absolutely on the top of their game. The NFL is always a war of attrition, and the most important thing the offense did was control the line of scrimmage.
It wasn’t just to the defense’s credit that the Bears controlled the line of scrimmage, the offense did a magnificent job of controlling the ball. It’s true that the offense did not finish a lot of drives, but they definitely did great work in wearing the Dolphins defense down and keeping the ball.
In short, the offense played as great a defensive game as the defense did, that’s how you get a shutout in the NFL.
by Corncob Justice on Nov 18, 2010 11:56 PM CST up reply actions
I meant "constipated"...
in the sense that we weren’t scoring TD’s. They would look good for a bit and then clog up (there’s yet another of those images). A more potent opponent could have taken advantage of the fact that we held the ball for most of the game and yet were only up two scores. This is the second game in a row where we had a lot of chances and didn’t capitalize.
We can’t do that with teams like the Eagles, the Jets and NE. With their offenses, I doubt that the D can totally hold them in check which means that our offense won’t get as many chances with the ball.
Did the Dolphins have any drives in which they had more than two first downs? If they had more than two drives with two first downs (excluding the last drive in which the Bears were playing prevent defense), I’d be surprised. Since they couldn’t move the ball, that gave our offense more chances to dominate.
IF IT TAKES FOREVER!!

I'm not disagreeing with what you are saying
But they weren’t playing those teams in this game. Against those teams the play calling will be different. But I’m not sure that our defense can’t win some games for us against the AFC East teams. Against the Dolphins they didn’t have to score points so much as they had to control the ball. BTW I’m not all that sure that at least the Jets have a better offense than we do. At this point I’m not convinced that they have a better defense either. And I don’t think that any of these teams have a better defense than we do.
by Corncob Justice on Nov 19, 2010 12:23 AM CST up reply actions
The Bears can...
beat the Jets just the same way the Packers did (incidentally the same way the Bears beat the Dolphins tonight). They need to keep it on the ground, away from their ballhawking corners and not give an inch on defense and be dominating on special teams. The Bears can do all of these things, it’s when they employ their willy nilly passing offense that they get in trouble. I hope this game wasn’t Martz saying, “F**k it, we can beat this team with our eyes closed, so let’s just run the ball and get back to gunslinging next week.” and actual improvement instead.

The defense was happy on the sidelines throughout the game because they got a chance to rest… they rested and bang shutout. Balance is key, and keep in mind this is the first year under Martz.

I'm starting to believe...
that we have a couple of bitter Packers fans posing as Bears fans in our midst. I mean, I’m not a blind optimist. I am extremely critical of certain portions of our teams, both players and staff.. But the level of the excuses being made for why we should be 0-9 but aren’t is amazing to me. I’ve never seen so many “fans” that are so unhappy with their team winning.
Let me say this. I am probably best known to the regulars here as the stat guy. But in the end, the only stat that matters is the “W”. why are so many fans so eager to crap on their own team after every win.
And this isn’t directed at some of the more pessimistic but grateful for a win fans, like mike b and Sackman. I understand the need to not buy into another heartbreak. I suspect mike is a cubs fan, like me. :) No, this was directed at those who want to tell us that the Bears didn’t deserve to win games they won, and that they will lose this game and that game. And then want to make excuses for the opposition when the bears win anyways. You know who you are.

You could call it luck that the Bears played a Dolphins team plagued with injuries
However, the Bears did exactly what a good team should do agains a team like that, dominate them in virtually every aspect of the game. The Bears are a good team, don’t listen to what fans of other teams say (well except for me, but the Bears are my 2nd fav team), you don’t get to 7-3 on luck.

it seems the bears have been very fortunate when it comes to breaks..CJ td, packers 17 penalties, Marshall getting hurt in the first half, etc. Doesn’t mean they are not playing well and creating their own good luck but they have been fortunate. I thought Cutler was great on third down last night and very erratic on all the other downs. Wish Hester would have pulled in that bomob in the endzone.

the best luck the bears have had
is staying very healthy given where they are at in the season. all that other stuff, good or bad, happens to the other 31 teams all of the time anyway.

Their health
is probably the team’s biggest strength right now. I read that the league is setting a record for injuries this year, but the Bears have largely been immune to the injury bug for some reason. If we make the playoffs, that should be the #1 thing we thank the football gods for.

Yep.
So much for people criticizing Lovie for his easy training camps. Maybe that’s why his teams are healthy this year.
Yeah but it worked!
Yeah, it's a good thing they dodged the Brandon Marshall bullet in the 2nd half
Would have hated to see how may more dropped passes or mental mistakes he would have made…
Lucky Bears.

This
He’s completely overrated as a WR. He doesn’t care, doesn’t have a very good YPC average (12.2 career), nor is he known to play through injury. He wouldn’t have helped them one bit. He’s one of the highest targeted WR in the league, and that’s how he gets his numbers.
"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.
Packers penalties excuse is BS
Part of the game; how is it the Bears fault when their best pass-rusher got held on every down? In addition, the WRs were assaulted all night.

Not saying they didnt deserve the penalties
Just saying if the Packers didn’t implode that evening I am not so sure we win that game. That is it, because Rodgers was slicing us up to the tune of completing 75% of his throws.

While he did do that
it took the packers like 8 mins to actually get a score….And like Lester mentions Bears had 11 penalties in their game and still won that game…..
Boo all you want but you know what….Deep down you know I am right!

it was
11 for 116 for Chicago and 2 penalties for 19 yards for Minnesota

Minny obviously handed the Bears the game
Wink, wink.

"Slicing us"...
Rodgers took what the Bears were willing to give him and learned to like it. Nothing more, nothing less. Undisciplined teams deserve to lose and if they aren’t good enough to play through their penalties they will lose. The Bears had a bunch of penalties against the Vikings and dominated them despite of them. That’s what good teams do.
Yeah but it worked!
one point to consider good sir
perhaps peppers doesn’t get held on one of his many plays where he was getting WWE action on him. maybe #90 gets to rodgers on that same play in a violent manner and separates his shoulder just like he did to stafford on opening day. i highly doubt the packers offense would be able to fully recover from that.

The Bears had a ton of penalty yards in the Viking game yet still won

The only thing that would make this win better is if Millen was strangled in the booth
So we didn’t have to listen to him…

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team(s), throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
