Not so fast my friend

The Bills defense is epically bad, but their offense, is kind of scary. Fitzpatrick really hasn’t been sucking, throwing only 1 INT I believe. They’ve taken 2 good teams to OT the last two weekends in Baltimore and Kansas City. They have really played everyone close except New York and Green Bay. This is by no means a gimme game like Carolina was, IMO.

Does it matter?

From Haugh’s story:

Besides, if Mike Martz’s offense were easy enough to learn in days or weeks, Johnny Knox wouldn’t still look as if he’s struggling to pass the class on reading coverages. Can you imagine Cutler’s reaction the first time Moss zigged and he threw to where he thought the receiver should zag?

We’re almost at the midway point of the season and we still have WRs who don’t know the offense so what flippin difference would it make to bring Moss in and have him learn a few plays. My guess is he can pick up what Martz throws down because he’s not as stupid as people like to paint him out to be. I’m sure his football smarts is above that of Hester and Knox.

Besides, he can run routes – post or slant – it’s not that difficult. If Cutler had time to throw I don’t see why Moss wouldn’t be a welcome target. All this BS about not being a team player – yeah, I get it. But we drop this game against the Bills and it won’t matter anyway … I’d say take the gamble.

So now a Chicago writer is speculating on Cutler's reaction?

I thought they all were put off by all of Cutler’s non-reactions?

according to Brady & Belichick

Moss is actually one of the smartest football players they have ever played with. People can (rightly) question whether he gives 100% effort on every play, but there probably aren’t too many WR’s who could pick up an offense as quickly as Moss would.

by JohnPaul on Nov 2, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Morrissey is an idiot. Bringing Moss onto the team would be like putting spinners on your old Yugo.

The problem is the O-line and the 7 step drops, period. Let Jerry Jones pick up that headache, he never has enough play makers either. Why spend the money on the fat boys up front when you can bring in a player that can sell jerseys?

by BigGeorgeTX on Nov 2, 2010 9:59 AM CDT reply actions

Biggs says...

the Bears should run the ball against the poor rush defense of the Bills. My guess is that gives Martz the green light to call 99% passing plays to “outsmart” everyone!

Lovie says…

Melton won’t be in the backfield anytime soon. Is he worried that it might work? Lovie pins his hopes for winning football games on defense and ST. Why not actually put some defensive guys on the offense? Just not full time!

Did they really do that? Is there video evidence somewhere of this?

I could not find any

but I do remember them doing it a handful of times….Especially in a packer game on MNF back in 04 or 05…..Dont think they ever threw him the ball but he did go out on passes…..

That's it! See, at first I thought it was hate, too. Hate was all I knew, it built my world, it imprisoned me, taught me how to eat, how to drink, how to breathe. I thought I'd die with all my hate in my veins. But I realized it was loathing.

I don't know

I could have sworn they did and I even thought they threw him the ball a couple times but I really must have dreamt it.

In which case they should still do it. Can’t imagine any linebackers outjumping him in the endzone.

by lopey986 on Nov 2, 2010 1:09 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Because if it works ...
Lovie pins his hopes for winning football games on defense and ST.

If the Bears win football games this way he can keep his job and can fault the offense when they don’t – a) make the playoffs, b) make playoffs but lose due to poor offensive play. (see Turner, Ron) He’s also more apt to take credit for defensive success (see Rivera, Ron for example).

Biggs on the Score

- NO WAY just no way the Bears look at moss

- Angelo will always mention / is always big on locker room chemistry do does not think the Bears will even consider it

- Thinks Tice would give his opinion on moss if asked by Angelo and Lovie

- Tice and moss did get along thinks Tice would say yes get him if asked even though he has no input on the offensive side of the ball other than o line

- Tough call for him on if he would do it

- belieck gave him away and that always concerns him when he lets a player go

- Hanley thinks the Bears are desperate enough to need moss and should do it

- moss would give them a respectable pure vertical threat they might need (if they do not think that Knox and or Hester are the answer). If the D wants to blitz would be hard to do with moss there and would / could open up running lanes

- Does not see it happening but he did not see the Cutler trade or the Peppers signing of 91 mill and 40 mil guaranteed

- Bears dont need the flashy news they need wins

- Story out there that the vikings waited the extra day to give teams time to call up moss agent to see if he would want to play for their teams

- Mully and Hanley go over how they think QBs should be in working every day and Cutler pretty much all last week off and not coming in today to go over film

- They think most QBs do that (aikmen later came on the show and said that most QBs he knows do not that during the bye week)

- Mully goes over how he has heard that Cutler does not put in the time like most QBs (again aikmen later countered that by saying he had heard differently and that Cutler worked hard and even stayed late when he was with shanny)

- Mully and Hanley were pretty upset that the whole team pretty much did not really work during this bye week

- Biggs says well we dont know what they do at all times (could be going over things or they could be watching Glee, the Simpson and the Harry Potter flims)

That's it! See, at first I thought it was hate, too. Hate was all I knew, it built my world, it imprisoned me, taught me how to eat, how to drink, how to breathe. I thought I'd die with all my hate in my veins. But I realized it was loathing.

I think questioning Cutler's work habits

at least by guys like Mully and Hanley, is BS. Those guys aren’t former players, they don’t know what they have to do to be prepared for a game. I have read multiple times that Cutler has come in early to workout/watch film, etc. I think he tends to do it in a low-key way. Like I remember reading that after the SF game last year, he got off the plane and came right into Halas Hall to watch the game film, they got in at like 5AM! This was only ever reported (that I can recall) by Larry Mayer. I think Cutler works plenty hard but he just doesn’t come out and scream “Yeah I was here breaking down film, etc. etc.”

just want to address one of these comments

“belieck gave him away and that always concerns him when he lets a player go”

True. However, you may have also noticed that Belichick double-covered Moss on virtually every single play the entire game, 1st quarter through 4th quarter, last Sunday. Given that the Pats D was lining up with Adrian Peterson across the line from them, that fact is very telling. As someone who has lived in NE and watched the Pats for many years, I can tell you that Belichick’s defensive approach is very consistent: you take away the other team’s biggest threat. Period. Even if that means making some sacrifices at stopping their other threats. The fact that Belichick was willing to forego putting an extra safety in the box (to stop Peterson) in order to perpetually double-cover Moss tells me that he considered Moss a greater threat than Peterson on the Viking’s offense.

Moss still demands double-coverage whenever he is on the field. The difference between the Moss of today and the Moss of 3 years ago is that, 3 years ago, he could be double-covered every play and still snag a dozen receptions per game. Nowadays, he might get half that. But the point being that the very fact he demands the coverage opens up stuff for your other players (as we can see quite clearly from looking at Percy Harvin’s numbers and how they skyrocketed after Moss joined the Vikings).
