Thursday Turkey Day Football Open Thread
Non-American friends, I truly feel sorry for you today. I am gorging myself on poultry and potatoes, and you're probably, I dunno, working, or whatever it is you do. I just want to take a moment to thank all the great members of our community for making it what it is--the greatest damn football discussion forum on the planet. Also, I'd like to throw even more thanks at those who are serving for us--I know it sucks not to be home for the holidays, but know that we're always appreciative of what you do.

Happy Thanksgiving WCG'ers
I’m, alas, traveling for most of the early game. Have to hang out with extended family and in-laws all weekend, but luckily enough of the cousins-in-law are football fans so hopefully will get to see the other 2 games along with good college football match-ups tomorrow. Bro-in-law has a cooler stocked for me after the 3.5 hr minivan full-fam ride, I’m going to need it. Safe travels to everyone and enjoy the day!
I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!!!
*Even if you are a Packer fan…but not as much!
Unreasonable people make life difficult...
I'm picking the Lions to beat the Pats...just because the Pats infuriate me
and the Lions are (i think) mathematically out….so….yea
Happy Turkey Day to all!
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
And how is the game going? My daughter requested Dora the Explorer!
If you go in the bathroom, turn off the lights, and say "Da Coach" 5 times while facing the mirror... Ditka will appear and slap the wussy right out of you.

I love watching the Pats lose...
It’s even better now that I live in NE! The sports radio after the Browns loss was priceless!

Btw bro
Your tag….Idk what to think about it, but i thought i’d let you know there’s talks of a Lovie Smith extension
13. It's a magic number
I think Lovie Smith...
is a great defensive coordinator. I respect him as a coach and a decent human being with high moral character and genuinely see him as a role model for young players and coaches alike. He is simply not very good at being a HC. His failings show up in his unwillingness to adjust to changes during the game, he simply has his game plan and sticks to it; without question or reason. I think there are teams and situations where he can be wildly successful, but as Bears HC, he’s made far too many bad personnel and coaching decisions to be retained. I see what the FO is thinking, but I simply disagree. I think there is a core of talent on this team that will ultimately be wasted because he (along with JA) will fail to adequately address the weak spots on this team. This defense has about 2-3 years before the best of its talent will be too old to make the plays they once have. Lovie is just bad at finding and developing talent, which is what good teams do to sustain success in this league. It’s a bit of a shame, because I do genuinely like Lovie, but he’s just not proven he is capable of consistently assembling and leading a winning organization and I expect more for the team I have cheered for since the 1970s. I am sick of the close-but-not-quite-enough this team has displayed under his leadership and I believe it’s time to turn the page and move forward as an organization.

My biggest complaint with Lovie is sticking with "his" guy too long
and he has seemingly corrected that this season as there is a level of accountability this season unseen in past years. That and some questionable in-game challenges are all I can really fault the guy for. I am just not sold on Lovie being the problem with this team. JA seems much more to blame, as the Gaines Adams deal, the Orlando Pace deal, Adam Archueta, etc are all JA decisons. Other than the Rivera departure after the superbowl I usually agree with Lovie, I still am not ready to hang this teams past/current problems all around Lovie’s neck. Let’s hold JA accountable, he is the problem in my eyes.
White Sox fans need not apply.

I can see letting Riveria go
Lovie wanted Rod Marenilli as DC from the beginning, Rivera was his second choice. What with Riveria applying for Head Coaching job that became available they just felt he wouldn’t be around long anyway.

What about Babich?

Only reason I can see Babich got the DC spot
Was that he and Lovie were friends and Lovie wanted to see what he could do since he did coach the hell out of the linebacking crew. Was it a mistake? Maybe b/c Babich wasn’t a successful DC. For all the hate Lovie gets for it, I can see his reasoning behind the decision.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Lovie knows Defense but not offense
We have had a bottom teir Offense for ten years and more. The Defense has been good enough (except last year) but no offense year after year. I don’t think it is so much not being willing to adjust, the D usually adjusts just fine by the second quarter he just doesn’t have a clue how to coach the other side of the ball. Right now a good Offensive Tackle and a big sure handed WR and Martz would be able to do something with the O. as it is we gotta hope the running game continues to improve and saves our season.
I was looking at Football Outsiders stats for the last 10 years and this team is very much like the 07 team the difference is the 3rd place schedule rather than a 1st place schedule.
I think the give Lovie an extension talk is to keep the team from rallying behind him and winning games they would otherwise lose and making it possible to fire Lovie before his contract is up. A very twisted way to get what they want.
BTW the first Bears game I remember was in the mid 50’s in the garage helping my dad work on his 52 Kaiser. Ed Brown was the Bears QB we got stomped by the Giants in the championship game that year. A lot of thrills and chills over the years I sure would like to see the Bears win another superbowl.

For the record I was cheerleading for Boldin this entire off season
Or maybe a package deal with NE for Moss and Mankins. Now after hearing how Moss behaved in MN I no longer want anything to do with him but you get the gist. Everyone and their brother knew we needed a wide out and a real live O lineman. Sad that a few players that WERE available this offseason are probably going to be the difference. But lets see how the Eagles game goes, this team is so unpredictable anything could happen down the stretch.
White Sox fans need not apply.

I don't think Moss could upset our locker room too much ...
But he came with a big price tag. Terrell Owens didn’t. I can’t believe he went so long without a team giving him a call. After seeing how Brandon Marshall has behaved recently I was almost glad we didn’t move on him. But that looks to be a lot of frustration on his part. He is a great receiver, and great receivers need the ball in their hands. If we had pulled the trigger on him it would have been so much easier for Lovie to save face and put Hester as our full time return man. But we have what we have. Just hope we can get a big-bodied WR in the draft somewhere. And when do we draft Urlacher’s replacement? That needs to happen sooner rather than later.
Hope everyone has had a good thanksgiving so far
We’re doing our feast tomorrow b/c my dad has to go to work tonight. Didn’t seem fair to fill him up with meat and pie and then send him to work (and force him to stay awake!).

You should have found a feast to attend today (extended family/in-laws)
Then had another feast tomorrow. Then dies from left overs on Saturday and Sunday. Plan ahead damnit!
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
dies? Dies from leftovers? No idea....

It’s a little-known fact, but that was the 11th commanded handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Commanded? Is that a British thing or did you mean commandment?

Commandment. That’s what happens when you plan ahead (“Must remember to italicise 11th”) before you finish typing. Plus, I disagree with the whole commandment and religion thing, but that’s another issue.

So, I'm watching this game and I just saw someone...
Get a roughing the passer for leading with their helmet into the QB’s chest.
So, does someone want to explain to be what is legal exactly? Diving at the legs is illegal. Helmet into the chest is illegal. And if you tackle them straight up if the face mask even grazes the QB’s helmet it’s a helmet to helmet hit and is penalized.
I think it may be officially illegal to sack the QB short of just shoving him down to the ground.

I also saw...
a shoulder shot into TO with the ball just leaving the vicinity… And it was flagged as a “defenseless” receiver. I didn’t think that should’ve been called.

It's becoming quite pathetic.
Not watching the game but with what both you and Jacob have said sounds about right with what Goodell is trying to do. I understand the need for player safety and all but it’s coming to a point that’s becoming unbearable to watch as a fan of “defensive” football.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
My guess is...
Goodell watched the football scene in Starship Troopers one too many times.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
I mean, I can see why TO was called defenseless.
TO was being held by his legs when the LB came in to finish him off. But by making that call, you’re saying that a second player can’t finish off the play, and it wasn’t a helmet shot anyway.
I like player safety too; the fewer players with scrambled eggs for brains the better. But at some point, the way things are constructed, there has to be hard hitting and, most of all, good tackling.
by Steven Schweickert on Nov 25, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions
Agreed
Not every tackle will be made like Manning’s the other night. It’s not possible. At the same time, players are taught at the Pee Wee level to wrap up and swarm to the ball. If you can’t make the tackle they teach you to hold on by any means necessary until a second or third player can come in and finish the tackle.
Goodell is on the verge of crippling defensive players to where they have to make a split second decision: make the tackle and stop the guy, or ease up, avoid a fine/suspension and give up what could turn out to be a game-deciding play. I love the fact Urlacher came out publically and basically said he is against what Goodell is doing and he’s not going to change his game at all.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Remember what Goodell said
“they got the call wrong, but did the right thing”.
Its a circus and that man has way too much power.

LOL
"they got the call wrong, but did the right thing".
Tha’ts comical. Way too much power indeed.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
thats an actual quote from goodell btw
from a few weeks ago when there wasn’t a foul but refs threw a flag anyway because it was a nasty looking hit.
As much as I don’t want a lockout, I totally want the players union to take Goodell down a peg or twelve. Unilateral and inconsistant decisions annoy the stuff out of me.
