Oh Yes We Did! Chicago Bears Win! Game Recap.

Well Bears fans today was a treat.  The Bears showed up in all 3 aspects of the game.  The defense was stout, the offense explosive and special teams were pretty special.  Jay Cutler had a terrific day going 14/21 for 247 and 4 td’s (yes four).  Matt Forte really looked sharp with 14 carries for 117 yards for over 8 YPC.  (That’s right 8).  The offensive line seemed to struggle early on but then the team appeared to make adjustments. (Yes them too) This was indeed a great win.  Your thoughts?

How do you think Tice has done with improving the O-line?

Hard to say

some of the breakdowns today were inexcusable, but then at other times they looked dominant. My guess is that we’re definitely improving both week-to-week as well as in our ability to adjust mid-game to rushing schemes and blitzes, but that such improvement will be more in starts and fits than anything.

If you put sprinkles on a turd

Its still a turd…that probably sums it up…He’s done good work with what he’s been given. A LT who was signed to play RT who played LG, a LG with a bad back who was drafted to play LT but played RT almost all last year, a C who we love but is probably on the downside of his career, a RG who is average, and a RT rookie who was drafted in the 7th round

But damn if I didn’t respect and love the fact he got into it with the Eagles’ defenders when he did.

It may be one game

But for once we looked like an actual NFL scoring offense.

  • Love the quick scoring drives, especially the scoring part; the only drive longer than six plays though was the 17-play drive from the 12 that ended in a field goal. Lots of 3 and Outs.
  • Olsen played like a man, especially on his touchdown grab. Knox and Hester showed off their wheels, and the Duke of Earl is a very solid WR, had several very nice plays. Solid game all around by the WRs.
  • Too many blown assignments in blocking, especially in the first quarter. Even Garza let a guy come free.
  • First drive by Philly was exactly what the coaches wanted. The sack was an added bonus.
  • Vick had 333 passing yards. From what he used to be, that is an amazing turnaround.
  • Vick also had his first INT of the season. In other news, BGN is still hopefully awaiting Jay’s first pick of what should be many in the game… Oh wait.
  • The short passing game fits our WRs to a T. Knox’s slant, spin and drive upfield was a thing of beauty, and Hester’s sideline run on Cutler’s broken play turned that play into a major success.
  • Yes, the field sucks. I guess it’s our new Chelsea Dagger to our opponents.

Because we let highschool kids play on it two days before...

…that is why the field is crap. The field is owned by the Chicago Parks District, which does not think about fanbase, nor quality of play in it’s decisions. Vick claims in ATL he basically would show up and play

avoiding film watching and looking at what defenses he would see each week etc. Now Vick 2.0 is apparantly preparing the way a true student of the game would prepare. Guy saw how lucky he was to be in the NFL and I believe he now truly appreciates what his has. It’s amazing how far the right attitude and determination can get the least talented of players. Guys like Vick jump to a classass above when they achieve a similar level of mental application.

Fantastic performance

Cutler looked great again, and the defense put more pressure on Vick than I thought they would.

Peppers continues to be a beast.

Forte has his burst

Knox and Hester provided big plays. So much talk about how Maclin and D-Jack were superior. Premature maybe?

Today is a great example of Forte's value

There are a lot of Forte haters out there and I hope tonight makes a statement for how good the guy is. He isnt the grind out a tough yard on 3rd down power back. He is a finesse guy, pairing with a real full back would be the key I think. And no disrespect to Chester Taylor, we just arent using him the way he should be used. But alot of that is Forte getting the call on these 3rd down screens and draws. Anyway guy had a monster game and the threat of big ground yardage opened up those passing lanes.

I must say that my favorite play aside from Earl's sheer determination on that run after catch

Was Cutler’s fake scramble and toss over to Hester for that nice gain. That even surprised me, that and that shovel pass to Forte while engulfed in the D-Line just showed me more about Jay this year and how he has grown as a player. Damn good performance by that man yesterday.

by Wally&Mac on Nov 30, 2010 1:37 AM CST up reply actions

Does anyone else think that taking Hester out of the WR role has made a big difference?

I really like the play calling on offense – it’s like something really clicked this game. The way they used Hester on designed plays and controlled the tempo of the game was really good. You could also see the energy from the Bears in the trenches. For the first time this year, i believe in the bears. if they can stay healthy, things look great.

by DisCUBbobulated on Nov 28, 2010 8:30 PM CST reply actions

Its the emergence of Knox as a threat that has taken the pressure off Hester

When Hester was the only perceived big play guy he had a lot of expectations cast apon him. I am guilty myself of expecting sheer greatness from the guy at WR. With Knox out there Hester doesnt have to have the burden of thinking he has to carry the team and that was his downfall. Now he is one of 2 or 3 plattooned wideouts that together are turning into a decent threat. Basically Hester, Knox, and Bennett together pose a threat greater than the sum of each players individual skills, synergy is what I believe this is called. Keep it up boys, you looked wicked tonight.

by Bears-Cubs Bulls on Nov 28, 2010 9:01 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

It's the development of these three WRs together

that’s made a difference. Not just him seeing a reduced role, which I don’t quite understand cause it seems like he’s out there most of the time.

the o line still needs adjustments but improved but still needs consistancy

culter is finally settling down just needs to keep his cool but love the guys passion!

running game needs a power back beast

defense is looking dam good overall firing on all cylinders but still awful aginst the short pass

I think the plan on D

Was to drop back and basically give them the short passes and keep their eyes on Vick. Let ’em drive down the field and eat up clock. They were determined not to let Vick/D. Jax/Maclin beat them deep and they succeeded in that.

We needed the offense to step up and build up a lead which would let our defense play that game, and they did. If they didn’t and we’d had to gamble for takeovers / the big stop, that’s the kind of situation where Vick’s been having success with his receivers downfield, I think.

I like Ron, but......

If this guy knew so much about what caused INTs, why did he throw 164 of them averaging 1 every 25 passes during his career. For reference, League INT king Brett Fave has a 3.3% INT percentage or 1 in every 30 passes and Jay Cutler, who he has been so critical of, has a 3.6 INT% or 1 in every 28 passes. Hell, even Rex Grossman had a better INT% than Ron. 3.7% or 1 in 27 passes. And Ron wants to talk about other QBs decision making ability? Seriously.

And BTW, for context, Cutler has a better TD% than Jaworski did, as well. 4.5% to 4.3%. Or 1 in every 22 passes over 1 in every 23. Cutler has also had zero seasons out of 5 that he threw more TDs than INTs. Ron? 6 of his 15 seasons.

So it seems kinda hypocritical to me that Jaworski did a worse job as a QB than guys like Cutler at decision making and then wants to rake these guys over the coals. It really iritates me. I’ll take Jaworski seriously after I watch his expose on NFL Network that explains how he screwed up on his 164 INTs. Until then, i just see him as a guy who spends all his time trying to bring QBs who do a better job than he did down to his level.

Spongie's kind of right

he’s more anti-Cutler than anti-Bear I guess…I almost crashed my car on LSD when he totally defended the Bears and their win against the Packers and credited Julius Peppers for a lot of those penalties GB racked up that Monday night…this was when he was on the Mike and Mike show.

Would love to hear his thoughts on Cutler now…especially since it was him and not Vick who had a sort of videogame performance tonight.

by MetalGearPeaceWalker on Nov 28, 2010 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

I was impressed with all phases

of the Bears play. The O-Lion gave up some big blunders but adjusted when needed. Our kick returns downright rock. Offense was crisp and impressive. Forte had an awesome game.

How about that D? Wow. Tough and relentless. The addition of Peppers this year turned our defense into a force to be feared. What an athelete who has raised the bar for the entire D.

by TheotherDane on Nov 28, 2010 8:57 PM CST reply actions

There is little to criticize...

this was a full victory. The offense was relevant and effective. IMO, the offense finally won a game. The defense was erratic, but good against a good opponent. Cutler was great; his best game a s a Bear. Both Harrises made the game changing play. Forte ran with angry for the first time this season. Hester was great, even Knox was better than average. Obviously, not every play was perfect, but the overall play of the entire team was impeccable. Cutler’s personal foul was the perfect stand out moment of the game; when Jay is showing that kind of emotion in success, you know he’s engaged! I said they had to win against a playoff team, and the they did. I am impressed with the completeness of this victory and i have slightly amended my sig line in deference to this fantastic win. Enjoy the F*** out of this one, it was well deserved!

I really wouldn't call the defense erratic

They got the job done. The vast majority of the yardage they gave up was when they went into a Cover 2 shell (which I hate) and allowed all those dink and dunks for 5, 6, 7 yards.

Better than giving up the big plays, which is what the Eagles have thrived on all season, I believe. That was the gameplan and they executed it well.

We have to clean up the penalties, the lack of turnovers made the difference today

Nick Roachs penalty on that kick off was almost a major blunder. Basically we were a first down from a field goal to put it completely out of reach. Instead we punted and gave them the ball back on the 50. Also the false starts have to go, we are the most penalized Oline in football on false starts. Basically playoff football must be mistake free and thats where we are. If we can tighten things up we have a shot, we arent good enough to dominate elite teams straight away, but we can win with proper game planning and execution as shown tonight. If we had turned if over twice we would have lost.

Not trying to start anything but Manning has basically had all of his receivers and RB's go down to injury

he’s had to adjust to new people every week. You’re right, though, Cutler has basically had a couple of bad games that have padded his numbers, he’s been pretty solid most of the year.

I do wish he’d stop throwing off his back foot, though. The TD pass to Olsen was way too close to a pick rather than a TD, but it was his day and we’ll all take it.

I said at the beginning of the year that I thought our WR were a strength...

And I was incredibly happy being proven right tonight even if I only got to watch a couple of quarters of the game due to work and school.

Bennett is the big time answer for the reliable possession receiver, and it was only a matter of time once he got up to speed that Martz was going to fall in love with him and the Vandy connection was going to rise from the ashes like a phoenix or Al Davis zombie.

Johnny Knox is like Bernard Berrian with ball skills and actual heart and drive. I hesitated to make the comparison, but seriously as our resident deep threat he fills a similar role except he is more that willing to scrap it up in the middle where Berrian wasn’t, and he’s more than willing to scrap it up fighting for the ball where Berrian wasn’t. It’s my assertion that getting rid of Berrian was the best addition by subtraction this team has done in years.

Hester is never going to be Andre Johnson, but he’s a good wide receiver and fantastic threat, and really seems to be loving his new role with the team under Martz.

The OL was terrible, but in shades of the Dallas game we adjusted well and took advantage of their over aggressiveness pulling some kind of Aikdo magic turning a weakness into a strength and giving the guys time to get some confidence back and play somewhere north of awful. Are we going to have to address it in the off-season? Definitely. Will it work for now if we continue to utilize our receivers ability to make plays in the flat, and some good YAC? Sure will.

Defense did a great job, through the first half, but kind of started to fade a bit in the second half IMO. BTW, the line doesn’t fall under that, they played 100% all game long.

Olsen might have to upgrade to Brawny from Charmin for a nickname, had some key plays tonight.

All and all, great game by the Bears against a good team.

P.S.: I enjoyed a cheesesteak, while watching the Bears win. Also, seeing as how my boss is an Eagles fan and was calling for 4 picks, I’ll have to walk the fine line between good natured ribbing and pink slip on Friday :D

But Charmin is kind of I don’t know…endearing? I know i am not the only one noticing how drastic his game has changed, I wanna keep Charmin though lol.

Yeah he has been much in the clutch this year. Big third down receptions, etc etc

But he always seems to be the tight end out there the most even on blocking. And when we go to 2 tight end sets he seems to be holding his own on blocking and rolling out for the catch. I think there was one horrendous bad block I saw during the Seattle game but I am trying to think about some earlier ones, he seemed to have blocked very well for the most part this year.

Earl Bennett had NO TDs before the Eagles game I believe. Hester and Knox both have 2. That’s 11 games and our WRs have 6 TDs between them. Go check out the leading receivers in the NFL before you call them a strength. They’ve been hanging Cutler out to dry all year long as if having a porous O-line wasn’t bad enough.

Speaking on behalf of his team, the Eagles’ players are about as gracious as their fans in defeat…

Eagles left tackle Jason Peter said he and his teammates are convinced Philadelphia remains the superior team despite the loss.

“We should’ve just let them snap the ball and and knee on it, but we were just frustrated,” Peters said. “We should have won the game point blank.”

Peters went on to say the even the Bears know the Eagles are better.

“As bad as we played, we lost by five,” he said. “They know that we’re the better team and they got the victory. We let the game get away. Hopefully, we’ll see them again and battle from there.”

Reports that the Eagles left Soldier Field in a team Waaaaaaaaambulance are not only unconfirmed but entirely made up by me.

Moon has more, and is far better at this than I am:

Peters’ perspective on letting the game get away is mildly curious if only because the Eagles led 3-0 midway through the first quarter and then never again.

Brandon Graham scoffed at a question of whether the Eagles were still the better team. "Oh yeah," stated the rookie linebacker with exactly 11 games of NFL experience on which to base evaluations. "We just got to play like it."

So called bear fan?"Especially about the defense. Our D has done some great things this season, but it’s almost impossible to have a winning record by giving up 28 points, historically speaking. Luckily we aren’t just yet, but we need to improve there if we are to stay ahead of the Giants and make a playoff run.

Where did the blurb talk about most critical?

Silver called it the most amazing throw of the game, not the most critical. And I would agree with him. It was a great throw, and one of those where if Urlacher or more had been a split second quicker would have been a questionable decision.

But they weren’t, and I am no Eagles fan, but that was the most amazing throw of the game and it came on 4th and 9 from the 30, didn’t it? It was a great throw, and while it might be “garbage time” as someone else said, it came between Urlacher, Moore and Harris, all starters who had the play well defended, or so it would have seemed.

To be fair, as well, I don’t call a TD “garbage time” when it pulls a team to within one score with time left on the clock and an OS kick in the works. If Cutler had made the same throw in the same situation, nobody here would be qualifying it as a garbage time throw, especially when it was on 4th and 9 and was being defended by the starters.

Give Vick credit where it was due. This was an awesome pass, and judging by the reaction on the Game Day thread, nobody thought it was garbage time when it happened. Funny how the tone changes after the game has been played.

I was thinking the same thing while I was reading comments about garbage time. To pull your team within 5 points and an onside kick away from possibly stealing a victory was a great performance.

I’ve always hated Vick, both as a QB and then as a person, but he actually played a very good game yesterday and should get the credit he’s due.

The non-call that led to the UC call on Cutler was pretty crappy, as well.

The officiating was bad...

I can understand “letting them play” or “calling it close”, but they were so inconsistent and that’s what makes for poor officiating. Cutler had every right to mouth off at the official, it was a terrible no call and deserved to be “highlighted” by Jay. I was happy to see Jay be smart enough to keep after the ref and get the call; it was a nice emotional rally point for the Bears.

Quick question

why is going out of bounds and coming back in an unsportsmanlike conduct? I could see a 10 yard infraction, but UC seems a little high for a play that doesn’t benefit the violating player at all.

Why isn’t it a five or ten yarder? It might have something to do with the “intent,” kind of like a TD celebration with the ball.

That play really was horrible

If you look at the play, he was pushed out of bounds into a “SEA” of Eagles, it was like the heart of the bench. on the replay you could see him swimming and moving trying to get back in bounds, it took more than a second because he had to go through a 23 man group huddle. The refs were making it seem like he went back there put his feet on the couch and started watching TV on the couch or something. Ridiculous call.

comment i read

this was from an eagles fan… i like it

Vick has gone against the #1 and #2 defenses in the NFL the past two weeks.
He’s:
53/82 for
591yds,
64% comp,
2 Td’s,
1Int a
QB rating of 88.5.
78 rush yards
1 rush TD.
Vick is legit, now that running game and defense is what’s suspect. The play calling is eyebrow raising too. Why pick slants on a 1st and goal from the 3??? Holding Vick accountable for this loss or saying he was “shutdown” is asking him to be perfect. As far as “Julius Peppers chasing him down.” At least Mike gave chase most QB’s just get outright killed by Peppers. I don’ think Chicago’s front four is getting enough credit here. Whenever you can get a good rush with four and drop 7 into coverage ANY QB will struggle. As far as this “blueprint” goes, not everyone has Peppers and Tuck in their tool shed.

My only criticism of yesterday's performance is he still throws off of his back foot too often...

even when he’s not getting much pressure. Eventually, that will cost him, especially if you get to playoff football. I think that ties directly into the criticism of his decision making. I don’t think some of his decisions are necessarily terrible but his mechanics hurt him when he tries to squeeze it into small windows at times. Obviously, when you go up against the better DB’s in the league the chances of turning it over are greater when those “small” mistakes are made.

He did play an overall great game, though.

Iggles fans claim that the Bears are

“more comfortable” with the crappy field conditions since they play on it for 8 games.

It really doesn’t matter how often the Bears play on it in a year, if a field is crappy, it’s crappy for both teams. Or perhaps…nah! Cant be that the Iggles just totally sucked ass yesterday. Cant be that.

How players can ever get used to it is beyond me

You wear proper cleats (longest available) and try to play your best. Jackson had a big punt return…what happened on that play?

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

mark sleadhead is not the guy i hate the most anymore

that honor should go to Jon “dumbass” Ritchie

He gave the D and Forte SOME credit but said “Cutler threw 4 TDs good for him, but I was disgusted of the way he just walked in that wildcat play.” I dont think that Jay is the only Qb to walk in a wildcat play.

How could Cutler throwing 4 TDs and ZERO INTs not a big deal but walking in a wildcat play in which the nearest eagle there is 10 yards from him and wouldn’t have any effect in that play whatsoever!?!?!

He’s not even hiding his Cutler hate

I thought Moose Johnson defended Jay on the broadcast for that Wildcat play

saying something about not wanting his QB hurt by having the defenders being able to take a free shot at him. He also said, and I agree completely, the Wildcat is stupid.

Our excellent defense. Same as ever.

Oh, and the Eagles missing their 2 starting corners had a teensy weensy bit to do with Cutler’s zero interceptions.

I will give you samuel but hobbs sucks

"We were freaking robbed!! Our defense totally dominated all day! What? we gave up nearly 500 yards on defense? Yeah but we stopped them on the 1 yrd line! Our D is awesome!!"

more whine-ulance time.

derp derp…we dun have our best dbs so we cant play defense…derp derp

That’s how every team wins games: taking advantage of the other team’s weaknesses.

Anyone who says that Jay "kid cutty" Cutler never shows emotion can now STFU.

Him and the Bulls Derrick Rose dont show that much emotion to the media…but during the game they let it all out emotionally.

btw I know “Kid Cutty” is lame.lol

Er, what?

Who says Jay never shows any emotion, I have NEVER heard that.

He gets called out all the time for the slumped shoulders (emotion) rolls of the eyes (emotion?).

Who on earth says that?

it's because of the way he hangs his head... personally I think that's just his demeanor but....

lately his emotion has been showing a lot more so people who aren’t really Bear fans are starting to notice. It’s the fair weather fans and media that focus on his demeanor and not his desire to win on the field

funny how winning makes his

emotions look more positive.

I've heard winning changes everything

And attitude is one thing winning most certainly changes.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

It's the pouty attitude thing

I’m glad we finally saw some fire, heck I’ll take the penalty to see something like that (one time thing of course) But i also do enjoy the minor fist pumps, that kinda became his trademark. When he does the Super Fist pump though, it’s on like Donkey Kong.
