The Bears Den: November 5th, 2010 Edition
"It’s not difficult at all," Gill said. "I want him to have the best game of his career in a loss. It’s as simple as that.
Jay Cutler: Chicago Bears quarterback needs sense of urgency - Haugh takes a look at Cutler's need to get results now.
BEARS IN BRIEF: Briggs, Urlacher know Bills' 0-7 record is deceiving - For some reason, two different outlets are focused on how hard the Bears are paying attention to the Bills.
Buffalo has the Bears' attention - See?
Prey, Bears -- or just pray - Telander says that the time to gobble someone up is now.
Maynard pooching and pushing - Maynard is a consummate professional and a young kicker being brought in doesn't faze him.
Bears' Olsen missing in action - I have to agree--Greg Olsen should probably get the ball a little bit.
And now some stuff about the '85 team.
1985 Chicago Bears: Larger than life 1985 Chicago Bears never will fade away - Legacy and whatnot.
YouTube - Fans Remember the '85 Bears - People on the street sit in a fake living room and reminisce. Good stuff.
Has it been 11 years - Pride Of Detroit - A guy at PoD says nice things about Walter. It's good to see other fan bases realize he was the best.

I love the '85 Bears
but the way this franchise keeps harkening back to the “glory days” has some effect on what’s going on with today’s team. Let’s be the team that struck fear in the hearts of opponents again!
Moon Mullins video was great- make sure to check out the banter back and forth between him and the Comcastnet sports guy.

The Den is on fire today
I liked the title but the Office space reference gets every rec possible known to man.
No comment on the end of the top 100?
Payton at 5, Butkus at 10?
3 Vikes, 3 Lions, 7 Packers, 8 Bears.
Any additional commentary?
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.
Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

I haven't seen it all yet
I’ve only watched the first 6 episodes. I don’t have NFLN (or cable, in fact) so I have to torrent the shows. I was waiting for more hi-def rips, but I might have to settle for less.
I thought it was well done
throughout the whole list. I don’t however, agree with Jerry Rice as number 1. I think Montana, Jim Brown or Payton has a stronger case for number 1. They didn’t mention Payton’s work ethic or the fact that he only missed 1 game either, which slightly irritated me, i did enjoy the show though.
I was happy to see
Dick Butkis make the top ten and to have two Bears in the top ten. However, I still would have put Walter Payton in the top three ahead of Taylor.

I think Payton should have been number one and I was not a huge fan of his when he came up with the Bears, not because
of his talent or ability but when he was drafted he said would make Chicago forget about Gale Sayers. I also thought his comments after the Super Bowl about not scoring were inappropriate and misguided. All that said, as an objective football fan, I can’t see how anyone could be named ahead of him. His durability, work ethic, talent, attitude, and results say he should be number one. In addition, it’s my opinion that if you take Jerry Rice off of the 49’ers, he’d still be one of the greatest WR’s ever but wouldn’t even be in this discussion. Walter only played on a few good and one great Bears team. The majority of his career had him stuck with awful coaching and a terrible supporting cast. Every defense the Bears faced for probably 80% of his career were geared to do one thing, stop Payton. He still proved to be unstoppable.
I really don’t have an issue with Rice being in the top 3-5 but even Bill Walsh didn’t think WR’s were the most important part of a football team (someone on the NFL panel post 100 Countdown show gave a quote about this).
I’m not sure how the man who, a few years ago, was voted the greatest defensive player of all time is behind Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White. Butkus was the personification of NFL football. Lawrence Taylor was primarily a great rusher from the LB spot and the first to really utilize the ability to use his speed from anywhere along the line. He was good, not great, against the run and on pass coverage. I know I’m somewhat biased on this because during his career when the Giants played the Bears, you barely heard his name called during the game because Jimbo Covert neutralized him.
Butkus is still the yardstick every defensive player who plays football is measured against.
Lawrence Taylor vs. 85 Bears
It wasn’t just the O-Line that helped shut down Taylor. I remember on the running plays, Ditka wanted Dennis McKinnon to run block LT so he wouldn’t be a factor on the running plays either. Even saw Jimmy Mac throw a couple of blocks too.
I'm not saying Taylor wasn't a great player but I think there were a few LB's with similar physical abilities
that, had their coaches been willing to commit them to primarily rushing the pasher, would have “revolutionized” the position. My feeling is that there has not been anyone who could dominate the way Butkus did before or since and he should be ranked ahead of LT.
So The Bills D has only 1 (ONE) Interception This Season?
Well, it could be in double digits by Sunday if Cutler and the O-line keep playing as before…
What will it say if they get three off of Cutler?
Oh…it’s a timing issue and it will be worked out soon enough. If they lose another game because of his interception, all hell will break loose.

Dan MacNeil...
wasn’t given any style points to distribute because he’s a douche bag. Therefore, I don’t care what he says.

Get Olsen involved!
From Kevin Seifert (and Matthew Berry). Link
“In the three games the Bears won with Jay Cutler as their quarterback, Olsen had two scores. In the games they lost? No scores and under 75 yards total for Olsen. I’m hoping Chicago used the bye week to figure what works for them and it means getting Olsen more involved. Plus, there’s that whole ’Bills give up the most fantasy points to opposing tight ends thing.”
I don’t care about his fantasy value but it seems when Greg gets involved, we have a chance to win.

It's beyond me
why Martz doesn’t like to use TEs near the goaline. Every team does it accept the Bears; instead the defense can just bum rush with 11 at the line cause they’ll either run it right up the gut or throw a pick or incompletion to a well-covered receiver.

bustin yer balls
How do they rush 11, and still cover the receiver?
If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

clearly Olsen
Was running a one yard drag. Which we know was correct because the coaches say they are running the right routes. Not that we the fan can possibly know if the receiver is in position or the qb is errant anyway.

I thought about that
It’s easy with the Bears cause they can “chuck” the Bears wimpy receivers at the line, then proceed with the bum rush. :)

I have to agree with Haugh
that Cutler needs to feel some heat for his play. Haugh is right that his mechanics have become sloppy and he’s developing bad habits. Lovie needs to grow a spine and bench Jay if he has another poor outing, then direct Martz to run, run and then run the ball.
We were 7-9 last year so realisticly what do you expect?
Signing Peppers and getting Urlacher back has given us back a D.
Signing Taylor down graded the Vikings always a good thing.
but what did we really do to improve the O? We hired a couple new coaches, and suddenly we expect JC to win 10 or 11 games. We have a second rate offensive unit. Some of these guys are young and improving but most of them will not.
No matter how good a draft we have next year its going to take 2 to 3 years for the new kids to make a real impact. Our only hope for next year is free agency, and that hope is to put together an average offensive. If we do that we just might be able to lose another SB.
or there might be a football miricle in Chicago, after all hope springs eternal.
Been enjoying the Q&A threads with Sean Jensen and Moon. Any chance we could have a thread where Al Davis answers questions? Go oan, go oan, go oan!
