Quick Recap: Bears Beat Bills in Toronto
It's not a far-fetched idea to think that an offense can find success against a defense as porous as the Bills. Mike Martz and company struggled at times to find rhythm, but were ultimately able to get into the end zone when it mattered.
The defense showed up again, this week in spurts. At times, Chan Gailey and Ryan Fitzpatrick were able to move the ball seemingly at will, but the "bend but don't break" Bears defense was able to step up and pull out a win.
Detailed analysis later... what are your initial thoughts?

Bears won a good game, regardless of the qualifiers....
0-8? This Bills team took the 5-2 Ravens and 5-2 Chiefs to overtime the last two weeks and have been outscored in their last 3 losses by all of 9 points. Nice Job, Bears.

By the stats, that was a very messy game against the Bucs...
But, give them credit. They win football games.

You have to wonder how next season will look throughout the NFL when you (not you personally, Dave) consider
how teams like the Bills, Lions, Tampa, KC, Browns are beginning to play some very good football. Once these teams learn how to win and finish games the league could be even tougher to figure out.
The league is ever changing.
Should be interesting moving forward.

just curious....
would a two peckered goat be easier to deal with (so to speak)?
I think you have to take the win and not really get too full of your self since we still didn’t do a great job of runing the ball against the 32nd ranked rushing defense, our special teams (except for Izzy’s block) didn’t look great today, and Jay had just an “okay” game. He wasn’t bad but there were still several questionable decisions that he got away with, his mechanics were still really bad, and his accuracy was not good.
After having the bye week against a weaker opponent you would have hoped they would have looked much crisper on both sides of the ball.
Dave being full of himself?

Sorry, but.
Near a 100 QB rating isn’t a “okay” day. 2 TDs, no major mistakes, read the defense well, no INTs, won the game, lead the team rushing, took what the defense gave him and threw the ball away quite a bit, and won the game. I’d call that a good day.

Three throws into triple coverage that got tipped as they reached the WR
Against a reasonable secondary, those tips become picks, and this turns into a whitewash.
That docent prove anything, it cant be proven.
Jay can only throw those exact balls once in his lifetime, so if and when he plays a decent secondary he can make similar throws but not the same throws.
Make a statement that says he made a few bad throws that could’ve been picked and leave it at that. There is no need to say that a decent secondary would make the play because you can’t prove it.

Sorry, but, to me a QB of his ability with 2 weeks to prepare against an inferior opponent
and still making bad decisions and having bad mechanics which affected his accuracy, is just an “okay” game in my book. Not doing things to make yourself a better player when you have been annointed the “franchise” is unacceptable.

Sorry, but you are. This is the same team that took the Ravens and Chiefs to overtime. Cutler played well. Name the mistakes he made that haven’t been made by every other “franchise” QB in the league. You cannot, because they all make mistakes every game. If, in your opinion, a “franchise” QB has to be perfect to be good, then Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees are not good.

If you want to disagree, fine. If you want to think you are infalible, fine. Just don’t make these absolutely asinine statements as if you are the “all knowing” final answer on everything that is football and the Bears. I know you’re going to go find some obscure “stats” somewhere to try and back up your argument but don’t bother.
Have your opinion and I’ll have mine.
Rather than harp on Jay's performance...
let’s look also at the franchise LT in C Williams that cannot play well enough to start at LT or the primary RB in Forte that cannot score from the 1 yard line or the primary WR in Knox who doesn’t consistently lead the team in any category or the top TE in his draft who cannot seem to make himself known more than once in a while. I get it, Jay gets paid a ton and hasn’t played great, but he was the difference between winning this game and losing. The rest of the offense has to shoulder it’s share too. Even the best QBs need someone else to step up and make a play.

I'm thinking that....
His idea of how to improve this team is more to get them game reps doing his thing. The ‘Long" view, in other words. I never did harp on his performance...
in fact the statement I made in my original post was that Jay had an “okay” game. I didn’t even say he had a bad game. I don’t consider the performance he, or the rest of the team, had today was great. It was good enough to win and, as I said, I’ll take that.
The biggest problem I have with the passing game of the Bears is that I just get this feeling that any completion almost comes as a surprise to us. That’s not the timing, march down the field, type of offense I was hoping to see.
I do think Cutler was the difference today...
but I do agree, this is not what I expected from this offense either. To note, I was against the Martz style of offense before he came here because I felt it was a bad match for Jay’s best attributes. He’s a free lancer and not always the technician of a QB the Martz offense requires. Nonetheless, he’s the best QB the Bears will have for a long while, so he’s what they got. I still argue these WRs are just not very good. Can you recall a point where any WR was “wide open” in the last few weeks? I like what Bennett does, but none of the WRs are ever wide open. I’d like to see Bennett start along with Hester or Knox, but Knox/Hester are, IMO, simply interchangeable. Neither guy seems to get free deep with their speed and they don’t go after the ball very well underneath. Either way, I am happy to see progress, albeit small steps. Hopefully, the Bears can build on this win and continue to improve through the rest of the season. This rolloer coaster of a season is starting to get me sick.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
I have never been a fan of Martz' either, but, as you said..
he’s what we got so you hope that he can make things work. I’m still not convinced Jay will ever be the QB that someone with his talent could be. I think the decision of bringing Martz in was a mistake for the reason you mentioned and that’s only going to retard Cutler’s development in the long run.
This is one of the long list of reasons I’d like to see this entire FO and Coaching staff fired and replaced after this season. I would really love to see a HC come in who has the background and personality to let Jay know once and for all who the boss is and clearly define the expectations. I still get the feeling that Jay is not the most “coachable” player and needs someone who finally lays down the law to him and hold him accountable. In my mind, that’s the only way we’ll ever really see if he can reach his potential or if we have to have to admit we made another personnel mistake and move on.
I do agree...
Jay’s attitude and his skill set are not a great match for this team/coaches the way it is constructed. But I also think he’s a talent strength for this Bears team overall. He’s arguably the best at his respective offensive position, so perhaps the Bears could add some better talent to the other positions on offense before throwing Jay under the proverbial bus as some sort of failed experiment. With one premier WR, a short yardage back, and 1 or 2 o-linemen, I think the Bears could be explosive on offense. The problem is, there are some aging talents on defense and some glaring needs at CB, DT, and possibly another CB that will require some upgrade as well. We’ll see what happens as the season progresses, but I have zero faith in the current regime and I worry they’ll do just enough to remain marginal for years to come!
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
Agree completely,
didn’t mean that coaching was the only thing holding Cutler back but, like you, I don’t think this group will ever get enough talent around him to make a difference in my opinion.
Free Agency
Is deeper this coming off-season than it is on the offensive side.
I’d like to see the team to make a play for Barry Cofield of the Giants at DT and CBs like Richard Marshall and Carlos Rogers, then we could upgrade here.
A LT is a must in R1, and I certainly think that Mikel Leshoure at 230lbs+ provides a thumper in the middle with Forte becoming the 3rd down back, We also have picked up the 250lbs Unga in the supp draft.

and at WR
Derrell Johnson-Koulianos could be well worth a look as at Iowa he plays in a ProStyle offense, has deep speed and is a reasonable route runner. Plus he’s over 6ft and has run a 4.43

Derrell
Will be a third or fourth RD steal if we can pick him up.
DJK
Is an Iowa Hawkeye and therefore will not be drafted by the Bears. It would give me a permanent orgasm. That’s too much to ask.

I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
That is why we need to hire a smart GM!
Organizations are really starting to figure out that drafting Iowa player are a smart way to go. The Colts have already figured it out.
Williams
I never really understood why we didn’t stick with Williams at RT – he could be more capable than Webb, and if we draft a LT next year (Anthony Castonzo?) we have bookends.
Forte is turning into a 3rd down back. Either using Harvey Unga, or drafting the 230lbs+ Mikel Leshoure could give the team a real ground attack. Taylor signed a $12m/4year deal but $7m was in the first year so he becomes an attractive yet moveable asset.
Cutler had a better day and despite the occasional bad decision and poor mechanics didn’t systematically repeat those errors. Which is all you can ask for

Actually, I was kidding about the "you are wrong" part.
Unfortunately, there is no sarcasm key. I thought, given the amount of interact that you and I have had, that you would have gotten that, but I guess You didn’t. That was why I repeated it twice.
But what the hell difference would it make if I said you were wrong, or that I disagree? If I disagree, then I believe you are wrong, do I not? Seems silly to get all hot and bothered about someone telling you that you are wrong.
As to the rest of the post. it goes both ways. How many of your opinions do you believe are wrong? And if you disagree with mine than how many of those do you think are right?
And the “stats” comment is the argument of someone who has absolutely no argument. It’s simply a way to deflect a valid argument before it even gets here.
What part of Cutlers performance bothered you so much? Seems to me like he limited mistakes, read the defense well, and won the game. Did he not do those things? What is a good outing to you?

Just got back on...
I didn’t get the sarcasm part so you’re right, I did overreact in that case. Regarding Cutler, all I said in my original post was that he had an “okay” game, not a bad game, just an “okay” one and for the reasons I stated.
I am not against Cutler, I just don’t think he is living up to the expectations most of us had of him.
I understand the limitations of the talent around him and certainly don’t put all the troubles of the offense this season on his shoulders, but I was hoping he would be one of those QB’s that made the players around him better and, to me, he has not shown that so far.
But you are/were
I’m not a Cutler cheerleaders as LostinStl will testify but no QB goes through a game without the occasion bad decision or poor mechanics.
In fact two weeks can be a problem as he might dwell on the problems. Once he got into a routine/rhythm he grew into the game, and the best you can ask for is a conservative game, moving the ball well, and no turnovers.
Its about confidence, and Cutler deserves a B+
"I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals."
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
As I said before, it's an opinion.
In my opinion it was just an “okay” performance, if it was a very good by your standards, that’s your opinion. Again, I never said he was bad today, just that he did some bad things and those things were the same weaknesses we’ve seen before.
My having to defend my opinion is what’s making it sound like I was down on Cutler, but look back through the chain and I never said he had a bad game.
Agree
but not as many – which hints at improvement. I mean Brady, Manning and Brees occasionally have poor series if not poor games.
As the one potential franchise guy on our offense, fans will grab evidence of improvement.
And I think the way the Bills defense has played recently, Cutler has done well consider his confidence must be at a low ebb which was illustrated in his first few series.
I’m one of the worst to call out his weaknesses but today I thought phew at least he didn’t mess up, which for me is the first step to eventually justifying the price we paid for him
"I like pigs. Dogs look up to us. Cats look down on us. Pigs treat us as equals."
Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
And how did he not look better than his last outing?
Not doing things to make yourself a better player when you have been annointed the "franchise" is unacceptable
Was he not better? And what do you mean not doing anything to make yourself better? How do you define that? Because by my definition, you would have to actually know what he was doing in the bye week to make that call.

I'm talking about still making poor decisions, not as many as the last few weeks, granted, but still
there were 3 or 4 passes that were thrown into double and triple coverage but, luckily, fell incomplete. Also, and the analyst made the point several times throughout the game, he still doesn’t set his feet when he throws even when he has sufficient time. That affects his accuracy and, like the Redskins game, his turnovers.
Those are things he’s been criticized for throughout his career and he doesn’t seem, in my opinion, to care about really correcting. It’s like he thinks his arm is so strong that he can make the throw no matter what. At this level he needs to realize that will not always work and he has to concentrate on the little things to fix that. Obviously, I don’t know what he does in practice or during the offseason to work on those things but just by watching him he either isn’t trying to change or whatever method he’s using isn’t working.
OK....
I watched Manning and the Colts today after the Bears game, and saw several throws in to coverage that he never should have made. Samuel’s first pick was into triple coverage with 4 Eagles in the area. And the game ending pick that Manning threw was into double coverage with 3 greens in the area. You would think, then, that he would have learned, considering he has made these mistakes for 13 season. He must not be doing enough to try and fix these issues.
See, Manning is being considered one of the greatest QBs ever. But 13 years in, he still makes 3-4 boneheaded throws a game. Brett Favre is also considered one of the best ever. He leads the league in INTs. Behind him? Drew Brees. Even the best of the veteran QBs make a few stupid throws a game. Expecting Cutler to stop making mistakes is a sure way to be disappointed, and even if he ends up in The Hall of Fame you will end up disappointed if you wait for him to stop making 3-4 mistakes a game. Manning does it after 13 years. Brees does it well into his 10th year. And Brett Favre is still making these types of mistakes after 20 record shattering years.

I agree with you about expecting perfection and that's not what I intended to say.
Again, I’m not saying he had a bad game by any means, my point is that he still makes these bad decisions on more of a regular basis than I think he should. Guys like P. Manning, Brees, and even Brady have bad games or even bad quarters here and there but then they correct things for the most part. I just don’t see Jay making the mental commitment to try and clean that part of his game up. As I’ve said, none of us have any tangible evidence that he does or doesn’t put the time in to get better, it’s just the impression I get when you watch him or hear him.
What I'm saying is...
That Manning, Bress, Brady, Favre, Rivers, Rodgers a all of the leagues good QBs make 3-4 of those boneheaded plays every game. My point is that Cutler wasn’t making 3-4. He was making more like 8-10. That’s why they call it limiting mistakes, not eliminating mistakes. Because eliminating is near impossible, if not entirely impossible.
If Cutler can limit those mistakes to 3-4 a game, as he did today, he will be in great shape.

And....
From Michael Wright at ESPN:
Body-language examination: Jay Cutler appeared to cough-up the game in the fourth quarter when Spencer Johnson dropped him for a 7-yard sack and fumble that Buffalo turned into a 19-14 lead with 10:27 left to play.
Cutler slammed his helmet to the ground in front of the bench after walking to the sideline after the play. But the quarterback immediately asked the coaches for printouts of pictures of the defense from that drive as he talked to backup quarterbacks Todd Collins and Caleb Hanie.
So instead of detaching from the contest, Cutler immersed himself, which allowed him to make up for the mistake two drives later.
So, there is evidence that Cutler is trying to fix problems, is succeeding at doing so.

ok deal, call those teams and give them your argument
Bet they don’t trade for Cutler even up. (Except Favre) If we are being realistic, Cutler has shown nothing but a flash and potential to be listed with those greats. The difference between them and Cutler thus far is stability. Those greats do a whole lot of good and seldom bad. Cutler is about even good/bad.

Maybe i just misunderstood
When discussing Cutler on multiple threads you bring up Manning, Breese and Favre (as well as others). So in conclusion when discussing one guy (Cutler) and mentioning the others I would assume that as a comparison, as done through stats and discussions.
I am glad we made the trade just don’t consider him in those categories yet until he can prove otherwise. My comment was more to the proving a consistent good/great performance levels and dismissing the bad games such as multiple picks etc.
He has decent rating numbers. A good OC or a little more consistency or a little better team elevation and I believe he could make that echelon.

I have, in the past.....
compared Cutler to these players at the same point in their careers. He is comparable to those QBs then. But my only purpose in those comparisons is to point out that these great QBs made just as many, and in some cases more, mistakes then as Cutler makes now. Beyond that, comparisons are misleading. That’s why there is no clear cut argument for the “Best Ever”. Because factors like scheme, coaching, surrounding players and more variables that are too large to overcome. And here I have just made comparisons that encompass the same issue. That these QBs make the same kind of mistakes now, even a decade or two into well established Hall of Fame careers. My point is that Cutler’s mistakes are being overblown, not that he is in the same league. If these greats can be expected to make 3-4 of these plays a game, then how can Cutler be hung for them?
I wouldn’t even attempt to throw Cutler into the conversation with these players other than to say that he has a chance to be that kind of player.

As you can see, they are both horrible, and the last one definitely cost the Colts the game. You’ll also note, if you will, the horrid mechanics of the game ending INT throw. If you shouldn’t see this type of stuff from Cutler, you definitely shouldn’t be seeing this type of stuff from a guy who has a ring and is considered the best in the game, maybe ever. Right?

While I know it's foolish to argue with T-Train
about the greatness of Jay Cutler, for fear of being bombarded with some good and some useless stats…Not making mistakes doesn’t mean that you played a good game.
Winning, throwing no INTs...
limiting mistakes and throwing 2 TDs with a 97 QB rating would indicate he did though.
And I don’t think, nor have I ever said that Cutler is great. He is not. Nor is he awful. But too many of the arguments against him here fail to take into account his surroundings, the fact that this new system was going to take time to come together, that this is his third system in three years and and various other factors. In general, I’m just tired of seeing Bears fans tear down everything before it even has a chance to build.
Cutler is what he is. A young up and comer with tons of potential who hasn’t proven a damned thing yet but has shown promise, as well as showing that he has a lot to learn.
Cutler makes plenty of mistakes. I’m the first to admit it. and I hate that I’ve been forced into a position to come of as his biggest fan (I’m not even close to it, and I’m not even sold on him, yet) but frankly, I’d rather be in this position than to be trying to make mountains out of molehills so that I can appear right about our QB sucking.

Absolutely
Doug and OB aren’t listenable right now with their complaining. The Bears are 5-3 and have a chance for sole possession of 1st tonight. At this point in the season being in first place matters.
Yeah but it worked!
Great win...
my quick thoughts:
1. Cutler played great (his best this season), missed on the Forte pass and that’s really it. Amazing how well he plays when he’s not sacked 15 times a game!
2. Bennett is a great possession WR.
3. I am still not sold on Knox and Hester as the best combo of WRs; they are too similar.
4. Give Martz credit for running more than passing; it was what I lobbied for all week.
5. The O-line played better, but they still suck at run blocking.
6. C Williams is NOT a guard.
7. The defense played well enough to win; but the DTs are not getting enough pressure.
8. Forte is great between the 20s, but Taylor is FAR superior at short yardage/goal line.
9. For a while, Cutler was the best RB in the game.
10. Olsen finally showed up in a game and the Bears offense scored in the red zone
11. Tim Jennings is better than Tillman and Bowman!
12. Robbie Gould had a miss and it didn’t hurt the Bears…whhhew!
13. As much I thought it would never happen, Manning is the best SS on the team.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
Good points
Question – if C Williams is NOT a guard, then where do we play him – or do we bench him? I don’t think he’s good enough to bump either Omiyale or Webb right now. Is he a bust?
Well...
he’s not a success. Perhaps he can be the next Kevin Shafer, a decent back-up and fill in spot starter. He’s probably not a trade candidate.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
I wouldn't say worthless.....
I’m not even sure he’s a bust yet. He certainly isn’t good. But then, has he been put in a position to be good? This is a problem I’ve had with Smith and company for years. The whole musical linemen thing. Mike Gandy sucked here after playing 3 different positions, went to AZ and was a solid starter for a Super Bowl team. Kevin Shaffer is considered a solid starter in Cleveland, comes here and sucks because they want to play him all over. Meanwhile, John St Clair sucks here, then goes to Cleveland to replace Shaffer, and grades better than any of our tackles.
It is ridiculous. I’m not willing to trust any evaluation of a linemen playing for Chicago, because Chicago has no idea of how to use linemen. They try bouncing them all over to find a spot for them instead of letting them develop in a spot. And regardless of what some will believe, playing RT and LT are very different positions. They are not interchangeable.
I see Williams being let go, just to turn into a valid starter somewhere else, and the worst part is that it won’t be as if the Bears lost out because nobody here was going to develop him anyways.

If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.

Initial thoughts...
Martz alternated between “Mad” and “Genius” far too often for my taste. There were a couple of very creative run plays. Namely, the Bennett counter and the Forte pitch for the 2PC. But there were also far too many Forte gut runs for my taste. Forte is an outside runner, best utilized when given space. It’s why he’s the most dangerous inside screen man in the NFL today. Taylor is more of a jack-of-all-trades, with a very good nose for the next marker, whether it be first or touch. Cutler was his maddening self once again, making some fantastic throws and decisions at certain points, then coming right back and throwing into triple coverage to a shorter wideout. The WRs played reasonable, though that Olsen TD was pathetic either from a playcalling or execution standpoint, I can’t really tell.
The Lovie Two defense played like the Lovie Two defense. Defend the run and the homerun, let the dink and dunk beat you. Peanut is clearly no longer a cover corner in the NFL. I’ve been an apologist for him for a long time. But he couldn’t stay on his feet too many times again today. Get him some aerating cleats or something like that. Then he might actually be able to stay upright. Otherwise, he should be transitioned to FS, and sooner rather than later. Urlacher got straight-up beat on several plays. Either people are learning how to play against him, or he’s lost his cutback. Pep got hurt, one thing that couldn’t happen. Izzy had a CAREER game. He’s a legit ProBowl contender this year. Didn’t see too much Hitman out there. But the dinkndunk game killed us all night.
Knox is starting to pull a Hester. Thinking more about the home run and not enough about the little things. You get the ball. You build up steam. You run straight. That’s about all you have to do as a KR. Should we put Hester back there, now that we’ve found his mojo again?
Overall, this was a very unimpressive win against an average but rising team. Chan Gailey is a true offensive genius, as shown by his brilliant strategy against the Bears defense. Mike Martz is more Mad than Genius at this point, and it’s starting to grate on me…
Transition Peanut to FS.
Eh. I’d rather have our current group of safeties?
Also: Dink Dunk isn’t bad if you’re forcing 3 and outs or turnovers. The defense didn’t do much of either. But it also didn’t let lee evans release deep for points (as he did against bmore to such fantastic results). I think the bears defense did everything they needed to tonight. Clutch turnovers (praise be to jennings), a few sacks, bend but don’t break, stop the run.
It was overall pretty slick.
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...
We won, so I'm happy about that.
We are officially into Viking week so let the Brent hate begin. Not a flawless game but some some improvement In a few areas, still have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball but a win is a win.

We won but,
The Bears have a knack for making sub-par teams look playoff caliber. Coming in at 0-7 with a dead last defense against the run and barely gain 100 yards as a team. The defense has to get credit for two of those touchdowns. So, yes we won but…
let's be fair....
This Bills team has taken 3 losses, two in overtime, over the last three weeks from teams with a combined record of 16-7 by a total of 9 points. They are winless, but not horrible, and have put up tough games against three teams that are winning their divisions in a row.

The stats say we had 12 qb hits with 1 sack did that accurately reflect how the pass rush looked? seems like they had decent pressure
Also we only had 1 sack given up and 1 qb hit did our line protect jay better?
some comments were made about daniel mannings play yet he was 2nd in tackles today how did he play?
is anyone else concerned that tim jennings and charles tillman had more tackles than every starter besides urlacher?

I didn’t get to see the game either. But, I did see on the highlight videos that the play where Idonje got the sack with Tommie helping out was largely because Peppers was Triple-Teamed. Both guard and tackle pushed to block Peppers who was lined up wide, and the running back went with them. I don’t really care what Peppers stats are, he is a force to be reckoned with.

I believe it was the game plan
The Bills biggest strength offensively this season was the deep pass. The Bears secondary played accordingly. It seemed to me that the Bears blitzed more in this game than they have all season, especially Manning. With all of the blitzing Manning was doing, the corners went back into a soft cover 3 shell, and in my opinion, set up the Tim Jennings pick. Fitzpatrick saw Jennings playing off the reciever possibly seeing cover 3,the reciever pulled a double move but Jennings was on top of it.Three takeways,I think the gameplan was executed well. An offense that has struggled season long doesn’t just blow up in one week, they needed a solid balanced attack and now they can build on that going forward.
You're being very Un-Dude right now.

Don't the Bears have the leagues best 3rd down defense?
I’m pretty sure they do. In fact, here’s the stats (29.6 conversion percentage by opponents on third down. Best in the league ahead of the Giants at 30.5%). Is being the best at something still not good enough? And they converted well on third down this week (58%, which is pretty decent normally as the Saints lead the league with 47.5%, and awesome considering that the Bears are the leagues worst at just 22.9% over the course of 8 games). So what exactly were you watching, buddy??
Ravens and Chiefs both had to go to overtime to beat the winless Bills, so beating them in regulation isn’t all that bad. They put up 34 on the Ravens D just 2 weeks ago.

OK, here's the problem I have with this....
phil rivers could shatter the passing record and be on a losing team
So would you say Rivers is the problem on that losing team? The Bears defense is one of the best in the league, and have, for the most part, fixed the 3rd down problems that plagued the team in the last few years and led to some horrible defenses. Chicago’s problems are not defense, but offense. As bad as our offense has been, who’s blown us out? I believe that Chicago is 1st in the NFC and 3rd in the league in points allowed, which is the only stat that really matters.
Letting offenses convert on crucial downs is not what has happened this year. Last year, that would be accurate. This year, the Bears are causing turnovers on crucial downs and they have obnly allowed more than 20 points once this season, against Seattle.
Last year the Bears were allowing 20.4 points per game on their way to allowing the 6th most points in Bears history and the 4th most points by a Bears defense since the 16 game season was instituted. This year, the Bears are pacing the NFC, and 3rd in the league with a 16.6 points per game average. The defense is not the issue.

The Bears are 6-1 when the Cutler goes without an INT. The sole loss came this year against the Seahawks.

lots of complaining going on for a win
i think a lot of people agree with me, so i’m not trying to be condescending. but seriously the amount of bitching that takes place after a win is very frustrating. Was this a perfect win? No, but it was a solid one and more importantly it was a win. Patriots lost by 20 to the Browns. Vikings were beyond lucky to escape with a win at home against the Cardinals. The Jets were equally fortunate to pull out a win. It’s a league of professional players, so expecting everything to go perfect is not reasonable. The Bears are 5-3 and in decent position.

As I counted
There were 7 posts “complaining” out of the76 here at the time of my post. Not sure what complaining you’re complaining about.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
Make that 8.
Most are by one or two guy who are into arguments with other posters.

7 is too many
just joking, point taken, maybe i overreacted to a few naysayers but there are still some comments that are outlining every potential negative from a game that was won and I just don’t see the point in that. Also, like I said originally I realize that a lot of people aren’t complaining.
I thought we were very mild for typical Bears fans.

It is because

Now that the game is over and I've had my nap.
1. Our running game sucks, but we gotta stick with it because it makes the passing game possible
2. Our passing game sucks, but its not hopeless .
3. someone said our D is geared to stop the run & the homerun. So true. Our corners can’t play man to man so its a good thing they know how to get turnovers.
4.A balanced attack helps to protect our shaky O-line if they can eventually improve their run blocking this could become a tough team to beat. .
The line played better and so did Jay
did he make some questionable throws? Yep no argument there. But he was moving out of the pocket and throwing balls away as opposed to sitting there and taking sacks. Hopefully he shores up some of those throws but he got the job done when he needed to so I give him a solid B today. But that line was HORRENDOUS run blocking. This was the worst team against the run and the Bears O-Line made them look like the Steelers. Pass protection was slightly better but there were still too many instances of broken down protection. Hopefully Martz grows a pair and gets on Jay’s footwork. He won’t but I can dream. Bear down boys
I'll take the W cuz it could have easily gone the other way
We can all nitpick about the win but the facts are
1. Cutler didnt throw a pick. period. Regardless of whether he made a few poor decisions with the ball or not it didnt hurt us this game and we won so it is what it is until the next game. 2. the O-Line only gave up 1 sack. I dont care who it was against or what defensive ranking they have. Cutler got sacked one time and that is a big win imo.
3. The balance in play-calling. There were some calls we might not agree with but sticking with the run and getting that balance between running and passing is what we need to have for the rest of the year.
Not the prettiest win but it is a win and we are a game behind the top 2 teams in the NFC and 1st in the North. I’ll take that anytime.
When did Phil start playing rookies? With age brings wisdom lol
Loving the win
But seriously, where is Aromashodu?
Who knows, the guy is a career practice squad'er
not sure what all the noise about him is, he just isnt consistent for some reason. Guy has all the phyiscal accolades but no presense in the huddle or running routes. Time to stop talking about him, he lacks the intangables in my opinion.

I'm not sure
I think if he got the burn and was more involved in the offense he could do a few things.
He's apparently not one of Martz's/Lovie's favorites
so he doesn’t play.
He actually was on the field quite a bit today but I only remember one pass in his direction which Jay threw
too far ahead of him to catch.
I remembered hearing his name called on the broadcast
And I saw flashes of 19 out there. But he wasn’t getting the ball thrown to him.
I'd like to see DA...
and Bennett start at the outside WRs and have Knox and Hester rotate at the slot WR position for just a few series. The more I see from Knox and Hester, the more I see them both as just good slot guys with phenomenal speed, but no real well developed WR skills. They both play with a ton of heart and are technically running the correct routes, but they lack the finish on their routes and/or catches that just makes Jay’s inconsistencies in throwing mechanics look even worse. You can see that Jay is hesitant in his timing of the throw and Hester/Knox are hesitant to go after the ball. This “double” flinch really hampers the success of the offense and leads to the excuses about “timing” and “execution”. I wish either Cutler were more careful or the WRs were more aggressive; I honestly don’t care which (or both for that matter).
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE (IT'S BACK BABY!)!!!
"There's a fine line between stupid, and clever!"
Seems like
they were trying to push Hester as a No. 1 WR for a while but they’re off that now. Knox is the guy they’re trying to pass off as a No. 1 right now. He’s not, he needs to play the Devery Henderson/Donte Stallworth deep threat role. My eyes tell me that DA is the best one they have.
They probably pushed Hester as a No 1
because he’s being paid like a # 1. They assumed that his incredible success as a KR/PR would automatically carry over to WR. He probably should be playing the slot.
It would seem like the best position for a guy who drew a lot of comparisons to Wes Welker when he first started playing offense.....
wouldn’t it?

Mine say that a guy who drops as many balls as he does gets relegated to the bench.....
Which is why we aren’t seeing much of him. When he catches the ball, he’s awesome, as he does a pretty good job of getting open, and is a great body type for Cutler to throw to. Unfortunately, catching is his first priority, and he’s just not good at it in NFL terms (I wanted to qualify that, because there’s a huge difference between being able to make a catch and being able to make a catch while extended out and the hearing footsteps of .a linebacker, a safety and a corner who’s sole intention is to hit you so hard that you never want to try that again).

He did play quite a bit yesterday but they just don't seem to look for him anymore.
I only remember one time they targeted him and it was a bad pass by Cutler that was about 3 yards in front of DA. The thing I still don’t understand, though, is why he is never in when the Bears are in the redzone. Last year he did a pretty good job when he was in at the end of the season. Like you said, he is the type of body that Cutler likes to throw to (no Kristen Cavalleri references here, please) and offers a mismatch in that part of the field, but they don’t have him on the field in those situations. Seems like a waste of a weapon to me.
Was it a bad pass....
Or did DA run the route poorly? ;)

Bennett is arguably the best WR on this team
He has the ability to make tough catches consistently and withstand hard hits unlike Knox/Hester, who as you said, are basically interchangeable. Aromashodu has size and leaping ability, yet lacks the speed that Knox and Hester have, so I guess their positives and negatives offset. Apart from poor offensive line play, I think the other problem with the Bears in redzone/goalline situations is that the field becomes shorter, and the wideouts’ abilities to stretch the field suddenly become useless. This is why I’ve always been in favor of utilizing Bennett-Aromashodu-Olsen-Clark as receivers in such situations, as they have more size and can go-up or make catches in tight spots.
"Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."
At least they have a guys who each have their own strengths
More versatility. Its not like they have nothing but a bunch of skinny 6’0" guys who can run really fast.

I'm with you as far as Bennett goes...
but that presents a problem. I have often compared Bennett to Bobby Engram and I think overall he’s going to be about that good. The Bears really need a primary target WR and they just don’t have one. To note, DA is not slow by any means, just maybe not quite as fast as Knox/Hester. I think the problems with the passing game (outside of the pass protection) are simply the mismatch being against the offense more often than not. I’d like to see Knox/Hester getting the nickel corner or (second CB at least) because of the slot alignment or route selection and using their speed to get open. Too often Knox or Hester is matched up against the best cover CB a team has and he’s just not aggressive enough to succeed in that match up.

The Bills are underrated and are going the right direction
The Bills have a solid core of young players, they are going in the right direction. There was nothing about this win that was easy, expect good things from this Bills team. Is it a coincidence that teams seem to look good a few years after Jauron leaves the organization? I am off course speculating about this Bills team, but I wouldnt be suprised if they find themselves in the hunt in the next few years.

Fitzpatrick is a lot better than I remember
He was making some very nice plays, and they have talent at receiver. A little of that at DB and they’d make noise.
Agreed
I think the Bills will have to seriously consider passing on a QB w/ the first pick, Fitzpatrick is quite good, very accurate, decent arm, obviously he controls this offense well and has the guys on his side. They need to shore up their D more than their offense.

I'm happy for a win
But agree with him to an extent.
I have little confidence in this team this season. Nothing seems to come easy for this team. I think if just one game against one of these supposedly easy opponents had been a blowout in which everything was working, I’d have more confidence (Carolina doesn’t count towards this: 4 interceptions, awesome run game was only 5 minutes of the first quarter).
I would agree as well
I am happy with 5-3 but some parts of our game are so poor i feel lucky to be 5-3. Our run game is poor and our Oline is still terrible and doesn’t look to get better. Thank god the Vikings Offense sucks because their D line is going to ravage us. It wil be close but we better figure out a way to get quick plays off the line. And what has happened to our screen game that was so successful earlier in the year? We have have so much lack of execustion in some areas it is scary. But everyone has some of that so hopefully we can shore it up. We are not even in Green Bay’s class after watching them last night.

One word to sum up this victory for me...BALANCE!!
31 pass plays to 31 run plays! Wow Martz, it only took you this long to get it right AND it didn’t even matter that the run game still blew, we were balanced enough to be effective! The line actually blocked, I think this will be our front 5 from here on out. Finally, going along with the balance thing, Martz even pulled some tricks out with a few plays, namely the Bennett run and the 2pt shovel pass. Those worked because we were balanced. I just hope this is a building block for the team moving forward and that everything keeps working like this. We can do that, we can win some games.
