that shovel pass

was pretty sweet alright. when harbaugh used to run it back in the day it would always seem to go horribly wrong. great to see the bears do it right, albeit almost 2 decades later.

I'm still down on him

Sorry, he didn’t call a great game, cutler just seemed to improvise a little more to make up for it and we got all the breaks (lots of dropped int’s by the bills, lucky bounces for the bears interceptions).

A win is a win is a win, let’s hope they can improve even more next week vs minny.

At least he

remembered that there were two good RB’s on the roster this game.

No change

I thought it was desperation that brought him here and haven’t seen much to prove otherwise. Being > what we had in Turner is not enough to sway my opinion.

While I appreciate the greater commitment to the run and the sweet shovel pass, there is nothing I have seen to make me upset should he be let go. Look at our offensive rankings and I believe that should be enough to back up my thoughts.

Pretty much

agree with this…..I thought the hire would get ugly to be honest (it still might) but I just think that Cutler – martz just do not mesh well enough…

The only thing that sort of amazes me is that Last year after 8 games is Cutler had 12 picks and had numerous bad games (7 games with more than one pick all of last season)….So far only has 7 INTs and only one game where he imploded with picks (last season at the 8 game point Cutler had 3 games with 2 are more picks)…….Thought he would surpass that with martz to be honest…..

That's it! See, at first I thought it was hate, too. Hate was all I knew, it built my world, it imprisoned me, taught me how to eat, how to drink, how to breathe. I thought I'd die with all my hate in my veins. But I realized it was loathing.

I'm with you guys on this...

I didn’t think Cutler’s strengths/weaknesses were/are a good fit for the Martz scheme. Frankly, I still don’t. It was fantastic to see Martz stick with the run game even though it was not producing much. The commitment made the difference, IMO. The most difficult issue was the fact that Cutler was the most effective rusher in that game. To me, there is just too much ego between Martz/Cutler/Lovie/JA to be successful long term. Personally, I’d take Cutler and fire the rest, but that’s a debate for another time.

that's why the next coach should be an offensive guy who..

will put the fear back in Cutler. I know this may make me a bit unpopular but I believe Gruden is a guy who would do that. He would tear Jay a new one and give him that tough, hard to please coach he had in Shanahan. If not then bring in Harbaugh and watch him perform his magic.

because that would make a lot of sense and if Angelo stays in charge...

we know he won’t do what makes sense. He’d probably allow Lovie to make Bob Babich the OC

this could be the debacle the Cowboys are in. The only thing worse than having Wade Phillips as your head coach is having Jason Garrett as your head coach!

What in the world are you babbling about?

You are the only person talking about Jason Garrett homie… I never mentioned him.

Key words here bub:

- I inferred
- I assume

Hyperbole based on incorrect inferences and faulty assumptions by a guy who used all caps and multiple exclamation points in his sig line… you’re not doing so hot right now.

I’m guessing the Cowboys will go 5-3 the rest of the way out… would that make your head finish imploding?

by Dane Noble on Nov 8, 2010 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

Since I don't live in your head...

I can only infer and assume your thinking based upon:

a. what you wrote.
b. the context in which it was presented
c. my knowledge of your history of postings

It’s not like I drew some bizarre conclusion like you secretly love the Packers. Besides I did explain my rationale and it’s hardly hyperbole, it’s a single notion. Anyway, what’s the “bub” crack all about?

The "bub" thing...

I was channeling my inner-Don Johnson. Don’t hate. Also, I’ll keep playing along.

a. I didn’t write anything about my opinion of Garrett.
b. The context was asking you why you make an assumption.
c. My history of posting? I’ve only once in my entire WCG life ever mentioned Jason Garrett in a post, and that was when I was hoping the Cowboys would beat the Vikings in the playoffs this past January. So what of my posting history leads you to think you can assume what I think?

Also, did you used to live in St. Louis? If so, do you wish you could change your screen name to LostInNE?

by Dane Noble on Nov 9, 2010 5:22 AM CST up reply actions

No hate...

just explanation. You know full well how my hate manifests itself. As for the screen name, I figured it would be too confusing to change it. I’ve lived in 5 states and 4 time zones, so keeping that straight is pain enough. I did live in STL until March of this year. Now I’m in New England! Actually had a chance to get back to Chicago (my hometown), but it fell through.

I'm down on Martz for the lack of creative running plays.

There were precisely two running plays that I could classify as being “creative”, and one of them wasn’t credited as a running play.

The first was the Bennett counter where he started off split wide, then motioned into a HB position behind Forte. Cutler faked the handoff to Forte, who ran to the right side, drawing the defense. Bennett then takes a handoff and goes off-tackle to the left side, where there’s basically nobody for about 7 yards after the LOS. Result: 5 yard pickup, biggest gain off a designed run in the game.

The second was the Forte shovel pass for the 2PC.

Every other run that I saw was some variation of a gut run.

That’s great if you have Peyton Hillis as your RB. Or if you have the Houston offensive line.

But we have neither.

I don’t think I saw a single screen pass all day. The NFL game tracker counted two. Only that one designed counter. That’s it. That was all from the creative genius of Mad Mike Martz.

Were Forte and Taylor ever in the game at the same time? Or with somebody lined up as a fullback-type position? I never saw it.

Am I the only person here wishing to see something resembling a Wishbone formation from the Bears? Something that puts both Taylor and Forte in the game at the same time with a lead blocker? Obviously, I’m not advocating the Triple Option offense. But a couple of gadget plays involving three players in the backfield would be interesting to watch IMO.

The main problem is that Martz seems to be very stubborn with his play calling...

In the first or second offensive series, the Bears ran it three straight times and had to punt…I know he was trying to establish the run…but why not run a play action pass when you have the defense guessing you are going to run the ball???

I know is offense is “x”-step drop throw to a specifc spot at the exact time…but why not draw up some roll outs for Cutler? He seemed to do pretty well with them yesterday…and if the receivers are covered take off and run for the first down.

Unreasonable people make life difficult...

Still a lotta broken plays

Cutler running around, and I’ll only approve if he continues to run the ball, i’m not sold that he sticks to the ground game

The game plan was solid.

Not Martz’s fault the o-line is poor and can’t execute. And I don’t like Martz.

Martz is a smart guy....

who just needs to reeled in sometimes. I say keep Martz, Tice, and Rod for continuity sakes and fire Angelo,Lovie, Drake, and the DB coach. Bring in Gruden or Heimerdinger (HC) and Bill Parcels (GM).

by Mandingo54 on Nov 8, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Offense still shoddy.

Why are so many suddenly back on the Martz wagon? The offense still looks out of sync. The best plays almost all seem to be broken ones. Also every time the Bears do not get in on a long TD, I feel they won,t get in the endzone. I like the idea of the 3 tight ends around the goalline that they used earlier this year. All the WR’s are small and make tough targets insde the 5 yd line ( the play to Bennet was great but is more of an exception down close than somthing to be counted on happening) I am hoping that Cutler is only looking like a more athletic Rex Grossman because of the pressure and Martz,s O, rather than that is just who he is. Even so the Bears had to mke the move with no real QB for decades. If Martz and Smith are gone next year, hopefully Cutler is not scarred forever.

by sydp on Nov 8, 2010 5:36 PM CST reply actions

I have never jumped off of Martz's wagon.

With this O-line and WR group, it is extremely hard to make an educated rating on how Martz has done. Yes, he loves to pass the ball. However, the pass and run blocking is atrocious. Hopefully with some continuity, the O-line will improve. Like I said before, Mike just needs to be reeled in sometimes.
