No, because that would make us 10-6 and we’re going 12-4.

What are you talking about?
I easily see them winning out. Big deal, the schedule gets a tad more difficult. It’s not like the Pats, Jets, Phins, Vikes, and Lions have blown out anyone. Packers; well that’s a bit of a different strory, but you the know how a rivalry works.

Looks like someone has been drinkin a little too much of the kool-aid
You say “It’s not like the Pats, Jets, Phins, Vikes, and Lions have blown out anyone”, but on the flip-side its not like we’ve beaten teams with winning records (1-4 against teams .500 or better) and that includes a fluke win against the lions and a nail-biter against the 0-8 Bills. Im not trying to be Buzz Killington, im just being reallistic.

5-3 run?
yes please. at least make it to 9 wins this year. it is very important.
beat Minny twice and GB & Det. again and we are 9-7
and we swept a division some people picked us to finish last in.

sad thing is..
a 9-7 would likely get us to the playoffs this year. I’d bet the farm there’s an 8-8 wild card this year too.
What's sad about going to the playoffs?
by 62bearsthe best on Nov 9, 2010 10:25 AM CST up reply actions
The only sad thing about it this season, is the idiots who own this team
could use that as a reason to retain JA and Lovie or, worse yet, give them an extension.
Let me get this straight...
You would rather see the Bears miss the playoffs, in order to increase the chances that Lovie and/or JA are cut loose, then them making the playoffs with at least a puncher’s chance?
Oh god yes
Id gladly have them miss the playoffs 1 year in hopes to get a new regime installed that could put together a team to compete over the long term vs have them go 8-8 or 9-7 and get smeared in the first round and have that save lovie and Angelos job.
by lopey986 on Nov 9, 2010 11:41 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
First off, I never said that...
I was just answering 62bears question. If a team is just satisfied “making the playoffs” that, in my opinion, is an issue. Just making them with a .500 record and keeping the managment group so we can continue this 20 year of sucking most of the time, is not something I would like to see.
To answer your question directly, though, yes, if it was assured that missing the playoffs this year meant getting rid of Lovie, JA, Ted and the group, then I’m fine with that.
Doesn't Lovie have a year left on his contract anyways?
Seems like he’s around no matter what. Either way, though, I just can’t root for my team to lose, period, whether for better draft position or management change.
He does have a year left but most coaches either never make it to the last year or are extended before it comes up.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t cheer for them to lose but I was answering a hypothetical question.
This is the NFL - Nothing is Guaranteed
There’s no guarantee that the Bears won’t make the playoffs or even that they won’t win more than one game if they get there.
There’s no guarantee that this offense won’t become the juggernaut we hope it becomes given enough time.
And there’s no guarantee that if Lovie and Angelo get fired they aren’t replaced by an even more incompetent staff so we’ll be back here complaining, “Damn, we should’ve kept Lovie and Angelo. They weren’t great but they were better than [insert current coach/GM].”
The Browns beat the Patriots.
This the NFL – anything can happen. That’s why I’ll never stop rooting for the Bears to win.

Rec!
You want to be playing your best football in December, and that’s certainly possible as the Martzfense gets more familiar to the players and as the coaches learn what tweaks are necessary.
Plus, it’s not like Cowher, Gruden, or anyone else makes it to the Bowl every year. I still think Lovie is a good coach, although he seems to be in need of a Challenge Coordinator.
It won't be easy.
But I still like our chances. No one team is really pulling ahead of the field. The Patriots has been exposed. As have the Colts. Minnesota is always one week from internal combustion. The Jets to me is as much hype as anything else. 5-3 is a definate possibility. But so is 3-5 and 8-8 may just be good enough with the way things are setting up.
It's nice to sit back and claim other teams aren't powerhouses and won't definitely beat us,
but if the Bears played Buffalo again we couldn’t definitely beat them.
All these teams that you all are saying are exposed or mediocre are, at best, toss ups against the Bears.
What about this team makes everyone so optimistic about the second half?
The point is the Bears could lose to any team in the league, but cannot beat the best teams. Why such optimism?
On any given Sunday
Anyone can beat anyone. I think the bears could certainly beat the best teams in the league and they could certainly lose to the worst teams in the league. Cleveland beat the brakes off new England and no one saw that coming and I think the bears are a better team than Cleveland (at least they should be) and I think new England is one of the top 4 teams in the league.

We're 5-3...
We’ve lost consecutive games at home to mediocre Seattle and Washington, and outside of Carolina (the worst team in the NFL), we haven’t beaten any opponent by more than one score. We were one play, or bounce of the football, away from losing each of the 5 games we’ve won.
We’re junk.
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that." -- Jerry Angelo (12.30.2008)

From Moon in the Den link:
Beating Buffalo, an 0-8 team after the Bears’ 22-19 win, means exactly what the Bears’ 27-20 win over the 1-7 Dallas Cowboys means and what beating the 1-7 Carolina Panthers and what defeating the 2-6 Detroit Lions means. And it means precisely what downing the 6-3 Green Bay Packers means.
One win.
As one Bear told me in the locker room after the Buffalo game, "When we’re in the playoffs, no one’s going to care what Buffalo’s record was."
The Bears could well have lost this game, the Detroit game, the Dallas game, the Buffalo game. So what? They could have won the Seattle and Washington games….

Yes!
This point is why I refuse to read Morrissey’s article. There is never a time in sports when I a loss is better than a win, never! Never ever. Why would he even write that? What an idiot.
"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."
"We feel very good about this football team. We felt very good about our football teams in the past and it's no different. You've got to go out there and you've got to do it."

JA and Lovie
aren’t going anywhere. 9-7 or 7-9, too much invested in them to cut them lose and bring in a someone that would cost even more.

Yeah the media has the a great job fo creating this atmosphere
I said at the beginning of the season that the media created an environment where the bears were going to be the worst team in the league and Lovie would be ousted. Now that they’re 5-3 their worst nightmare is coming true: Lovie saves his job.
Here’s the corner that guys like Morrisey have painted themselves into… If Angelo sucks at giving this team proper talent (which he has), then by default if Lovie goes 10-6 or 9-7, not only does he keep his job, he may get coach of the year! How crazy is that? Now these idiots are scrambling and talking about lucky bounces and how terrible this team is. It’s enough to make you root for Lovie just to see those guys eat crow at the end of the season.
Yeah but it worked!
*Yeah the media has done a great job of creating this atmosphere
I can’t spell today.
Yeah but it worked!
Hey Lovie is a good defensive coach
His give up yards not points defense works, and would work a lot better with an offense that can score early and eat up the clock. Lovie doesn’t seem to know offense though.
Jerry is a GM that knows more about bringing in defensive players than offensive players. Offensive players seem to need a lot more training/coaching up when they come to the pro’s College offensive linemen are very difficult to grade since they are not doing the things in college they will need to do in the pros.
We just don’t seem to have anyone in the organization that can judge college talent as good as other teams do, and that is JA’s fault if he can’t do it he needs to bring in someone who can.
by 62bearsthe best on Nov 9, 2010 11:21 AM CST up reply actions
So the solution is simple then.
Keep Lovie from getting too deep into the offense (which he doesn’t really seem to be anyways), and hire someone to draft offensive players for JA.

Plus,
a lot of people here say that they’d be fine if we lost and didn’t make the playoffs as long as we lose Lovie… but there’s a good chance that if we get new coaches in, we’re not going to be winning right away. There’s a lot of changes and things to get used to then, so why not win now and maybe keep winning instead of taking the CHANCE that we might win with someone new?

I think what people would accept in that scenario is hope...
the current coaching/front office group have proven that they are mediocre at best and there is nothing that says it wouldn’t continue. With a new cast running things we can have the hope that we’ll see improvement as they go forward.
Besides, look at the Jets with Rex Ryan, they didn’t wait to start winning. I think there is still enough talent here to get better and with the right mix of new players and getting rid some of the hangers on (T. Harris, etc.), today’s NFL doesn’t mean it will take years to turn things around.
Our defense is getting older and the window for them is closing. I think most of us would like to see a GM & HC come in that you think would backfill with the right players rather than the Adam Archuleta’s of the world.
the last part
is a huge cop out. “They could be better, or they could be worse.” “The temperature outside could be colder, or it could be warmer.” “That movie could have been worse, but it also could have been better.”
Every loss we have is well deserved and a result of the flaws, some pretty serious [coaching, line], on our team. Those were not bad breaks.
We beat the Packers because they racked up 200 yards of penalties… we did not cause them to lose, it was a bad break for them.
We beat the Lions because of a “tuck rule” type call… don’t care what the rulebook states, he easily could have held on to the ball longer if he wanted to… we did not cause them to lose, it was a bad break for them.
We legit beat the Cowboys. We legit beat the Panthers. Those teams suck.
I'm so sick of the Lions game crap. Last time I checked...
The rule that cost Megatron was just that…A RULE. Whether we agree with it or not, it’s the LAW. Next year it may not be but that’s next year. It’s not like it was the wrong call. Guess what? If the Ref called that a catch then it would have been unfair to the Bears and a BAD call.
The Packers racked up 200 yards is penalties for 2 reasons. 1.) Julius Peppers was unblockable and they had to hold him. 2.) The Packers were an undisciplined and dumb team that deserved what they got. Why not give credit to the well coached Bears team that didn’t beat themselves in that game and as a result won the game?? All their wins were legit because they were. They are 5-3 with a chance to own 1st place after the half way point in the season this Sunday. Those are the facts.
Yeah but it worked!
You completely missed my point on the Lions...
My point was that as easily as CJ flipped the ball on to the ground as he was getting up, he could have held on to it. It’s not like Jennings knocked it out at the last second and the rule worked in our favor. It was a very dumb thing to do, and very lucky that we were on the beneficial end of it.
Yes it’s a rule. No the Bears D did not make a good play to force the rule.
The point is that you should not give the Bears credit for accidentally being on the nice end of a stupid play by CJ.
It. Was. Lucky.
As for the Packers, yes I see you point about Peppers. It is correct to a degree, but not to the tune of 200 yards.
And yeah, the Bears are better coached than the Packers… how long have you been watching this team???
sorry one other thing...
let’s say your point about the packers being disorganized or whatever, hence racking up 200 penalty yards is true… that just means the Bears beat a bad Packers team. What does that prove.
The ultimate point is that the Bears are not a good football team, and management should be wiped out.
Wait so by that logic...
The Bears should get no credit for anything. You know why the Bears should get credit for beating the Pack? Because I can’t find another game this year that the Pack looked that undisciplined. Peppers caused that line to jump and hold.
As far as the Lions game, you know its not like the Lions dominated the Bears and they just kept catching breaks. The Bears were the one putting the ball on the ground and dominating. True the Lions almost stole a game but they didn’t. CJ dropped that ball because he wanted to celebrate and didn’t remember the rule. When Hester caught his great catch in Dallas, what did he do? He held on to the ball even when heading out of bounds.
Yeah but it worked!
Does anybody remember that....
We had like 40 seconds left in the Lions game and all of our time outs. We were moving up and down the field at will. We just could not hold onto the ball.
I remember thinking not all was lost.
It wasn’t looking good, but the fat lady wasn’t on stage yet either.
We beat the Packers because they racked up 200 yards of penalties… we did not cause them to lose, it was a bad break for them.
So I suppose Julius Peppers making the Packer o-line crap their pants had nothing to do with any of those penalties…

it did
… listen, he wreaked havoc back there. but as good as he was, he didn’t cause 200yds in penalties.
only because the refs didn't call it
i remember that game pretty well and there were legit holds on #90 nearly every single play. not exaggerating.
by reefermadness3 on Nov 10, 2010 8:49 AM CST up reply actions
I think every holding and false start
were directly attributed to Peppers… The Packers had 18 penalties for 182 yards. The Packer offensive line had 8 penalties for 45 yards including 2 penalties that went for 0 yards because the Pack was on their own 1 yard line. Aaron Rodgers also had an intentional grounding that may have been caused from fear, for 10 additional yards.
The big chunks were from late hits, facemask, and roughing penalties, not exactly what I would call “bad breaks”, it’s what I call stupidity.

So....
The pats are junk cause they lost to a bad 3 – 5 browns team or the jets are junk because they could barely beat bad denver and detroit teams…..
I find it curious and interesting that you have the fans that want them to lose so everyone can be fired and those that just want the team to win…..
NOTE they have been talking about this on the score and ESPN 1000 all morning pretty much…..Never knew that they were that many Lovie supporters left either (ie defending some of the things he has / had done)…..Makes my day entertaining at work….course then I feel bad for wasting your tax dollars….Ok maybe not….

Yeah and we were one challenge
and one recovery of an onside kick, from being 7-1. Hell I’m not even going to mention how the game plan against the Giants cost us that one. Woulda, shoulda, coulda we can do that all day. This team has as much of a right to believe as any of the other contenders. The Pats, Jets, and Ravens have all managed to do something the Bears haven’t. Get blown out by the Browns, get shutout, and get their defense roasted by the Bills. Anything is possible. Bears are a legit 5-3.
Yeah but it worked!
And BTW.... one of the most frustrating things about the Bills game
Was us repeatedly making offensive mistakes (penalties and needing to call time outs), immediately after resuming play after a time out in the game.

But as long as we are ahead of the Packers at the end of the season I don’t really care!!!

C'mon what...
If we are ahead of the Packers that will mean we are Division Champs or probable Wild Card…
I would care if we were 1-15 and the Packers were 0-16…but what I’m saying for this year is that I don’t care if we are 8-8 to 12-4 as long as we are ahead of the packers which should give us the division…unless Favre pulls a miracle out of his Sterger and the Vikes run away with the divison…but I don’t think that is going to happen, especially after we beat them this week.

even though it has been this way for awhile
for some reason the league seems amazingly leveled out this year….noticably different anyways watching this season unfold as a bears fan. the margin of victory has been almost razor thin for the bears and if they were slightly worse they would be as low as 2-6 or they could easily be 7-1 as well. despite this team’s various weak spots, there isn’t any reason to think they are going to suck it up as bad as they did last year. well hopefully anyway, i am just being optimistic.
No you are not being over optimistic.
Last year, half of the defense was injured, we did not have Peppers, and Jay and our whole offense was horrible. The great almight Packers (Pun intended) barely beat us both times with Jay and the WRs imploding most of the game. If Jay would of thrown 12 lees interceptions and a few more TDs last year, we would have made the playoffs.
if he threw for 300 tds and no pics
we would have won out.
