New England Patriots Linebacker Brandon Spikes Suspended Four Games

FOXBORO MA - DECEMBER 06: (L-R) Devin McCourty #32 Brandon Spikes #55 and Vince Wilfork #75 of the New England Patriots celebrate after McCourty intercepted a pass in the third quarter against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium on December 6 2010 in Foxboro Massachusetts. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Courtesy of bostonherald.com:

The Patriots will be without Brandon Spikes for the next four games. The Herald has learned the rookie from Florida has been suspended, which means he will not play Sunday.

It appears he is being suspended for violation of the league's banned substances policy, but there is currently no confirmation of what the substance was.

The rookie Spikes has 61 combined tackles, 3 pass defenses, and one interception this season. The interception came in the Patriots most recent game against the Jets.

A second round pick, he is a player that has started 8 games this season. He hopes to return for the playoffs.

UPDATE: Per Spikes' statement:

Star-divide

The substance was a medication that I should have gotten clarification on before taking.

This is a big blow

Should help in the run game along with the play action passing. We’ll take it!

na, no one will blame the loss on the absence of a rookie

but he is a beast in run support, and has very good instincts. But until last week he sucked against the play action. Overall easier to run, harder to pass imo.

I'm sure Pats fans won't blame a loss on that

The ones that have been on here have been extremely pleasant and reasonable (unlike Eagles fans) but ESPN hates the Bears because Jay and Martz are on this team

We're just sick of hearing about the excuses

Based on the biased nature of MSM, the Bears should be 0-12. Penalties (the reason why the Packers lost), the field (the reason why the Eagles lost), Vikings lost because of Chilly and dissention on their team, Lions the officials, Dolphins- 3rd stringer at QB, the Bills cause they’re the Bills, Cowboys beat themselves….blah, blah, blah.

Nah maybe it's even now since he was using

a banned substance to begin with.Who knows, maybe the Pats have always had the advantage because their rookie linebacker was on the juice. (Since I don’t know what the drug was, I’m only half way joking;-)

You have to notify the league before taking it because it has amphetamines that ARE on the list of banned substances. He failed to notify the league.

A subject related to this

i’ve been told of your o-line woes, but does it include run-blocking. Spikes was a big run-stopper, but not particularly fast. At pp, we thought we were not gonna use him as much seeing forte’s threat as a pass-catcher. Thoughts?

"I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was important -- like a league game."

by Cameron O on Dec 10, 2010 4:10 PM CST reply actions

From what I have seen

is the the Bears have gotten tons better at run blocking in recent weeks…..The weakness seem to be JaMarcus Webb in terms of pass blocking….So much so that my grandma can probably get 2 to 3 sacks off him in a game…..Decent run blocker but martz is not known for wanting to run the ball (all though he has evened it out since the bye week)…..

Forte has only had 20+ attempts 4 times this season….and only 15+ attempts 5 times this season (though Forte has two 20+ attempts since the Bears bye week {out of 5 games})

Should be interesting since the wind is suppose to hit between 25 to 35 mph on Sun and knowing martz he will still want to pass at least 25 times wind be damned……

Boo all you want but you know what….Deep down you know I am right!

Guys the offense will be even more prudent to put up an early lead.

Ravens, Jets, Steelers Chargers-all supposedly have great defenses and all are 6 feet under at the hands of the Pats. So as far as a great defense of the Bears, we’ll see. They are good, much better than many of us thought they would’ve been, but Sunday will reveal more for both teams in this anticipated match up. Best of luck gentlemen.

Don't cut your locks Tom Terrific!

by PatNation85 on Dec 10, 2010 4:50 PM CST reply actions

How is the Pats special teams this year?

Devin Hester has refound his mojo and hopefully will be a factor this sunday. As for the offense it can go either way week to week. If Hester can take a punt or two to the house we have a chance. That off course requires the defense to get the job done, should be a good one. This game could go either way and I am not about to start talking trash after the drubing of that Jets defense this past week.

White Sox fans need not apply.

we shut down brad smith last week

and we’ve only had one KR td, in week 3. Graham does not have the biggest leg, But the Space Emperor (Zoltan Mesko our punter the rookie) booms them. He actually won us the balt game with a 65 yard punt when it looked like field position was theirs. He is a rookie though. I would doubt hester beats us, as we are very disciplined USUALLY, but he is very good. Again, just gonna have to wait and see.

Sigh.

You’re really gonna be that guy? Fine, I’ll be the other guy.

The Ravens and Chargers games were 23-20 affairs, not quite the thorough ass-kicking your “six feet under” comment implies. The same Jets offense you scored 45 against held you to 14 in week two – also known as a division foe. And one can reasonably assume your 39 point game against the Steelers concluded their worst four game stretch of the year when they gave up twenty points or more in each game, which, coincidently, began when James Harrison got the league wrist-slap for the hit on Massaquoi.

I’m not one for excuses; the Pats have a very good offense that just works with whatever pieces get thrown into it. But if I may… Is a Chargers defense allowing over 21 points per game a great defense? The Ravens allow 16.75 and the Jets are at 19.5 with six other games giving up 20+. The Pats barely scored above SD’s average, needed a field goal against BAL in overtime, and were at complete opposite ends of the spectrum against a division foe.

by Steven Schweickert on Dec 10, 2010 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

he may be wrong, but the offense is as good as described

we are averaging 40+ against the jets, lions(eh), colts and steelers. We in new england don’t really look as far back as about the cleveland game as to how good this team is. Our offense went from moss to paper cuts. Our defense went from young and inexperienced to slightly less young and slightly less experienced. Our O has beaten teams worse than their O could beat our D. And our D is consistently improving, as well as the offense. Unfortunately, whether it remains stable growth is up to them.

But seeing how fired up Tom is, and knowing BB as the type of person who probably showed Super bowl XX then the browns game, I believe we are that good. Now chicago has a good offense and a very good defense, but we have beaten those teams this year either with big points or defensive big plays. Whether the bears will be the first to stop them, nobody knows. I could easily see the bears winning on that horrible field but I can also see wes welker dodging tacklers (that actually might be the best storyline football wise, you guys are some of the best tacklers, we are some of the best YAC, and don’t fumble often.) You never know.

by Cameron O on Dec 10, 2010 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

I'll openly admit the Pats offense is a good one.

I’ve said it probably six or seven times this week.

I just get easily bugged when a fan makes a comment like his team is invincible, which is kinda how his comment came across.

by Steven Schweickert on Dec 10, 2010 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

Well its all Tom Brady plain and simple

You can talk Welker and Co. all day but minus Brady and the Pats are what 3-8 at best. Its all Tom Brady and if we can get to him early and often the Bears have a shot. If he can get comfortable in the pocket he will carve up our secondary. This equation seems simple, stop one guy. But stopping that one guy has shown that to be a tall order.

White Sox fans need not apply.

add to the fact that

our offense literally changed after we traded Moss….
It took a while for our offense to click…struggled against the ravens but they scored 10 pts late in the 4th qtr to tie the game against the Ravens and eventually drove down the field to score a FG in OT
Browns game- totally laid a goose egg
Finally the offense clicked from the Steelers game onwards

I don’t want to see anyone get hurt unless it’s really important, like a league game. ;-)

Seriously, this is going to be an awesome game. I certainly hope both teams bring their best and put on a show. And I hope it’s a 7 point Bears victory after Hester returns a kickoff for a record breaking TD. Both teams have their areas of great strength and not so great weaknesses.

Ah...

they’re calling it medication now. Before this, I could see the Bears running off-tackle mostly, but now they may run towards Spikes side in the middle. It should give Martz more incentive to continue to run the ball and pass over the middle to Olsen and Manu.
