Chicago Bears Game Ball of the Week: Detroit Lions

Photo

Yesterday evening, you would have thought that the Bears had traveled from southern California to play in weather they'd never seen before.  The New England Patriots put on a clinic in the snow, in all three phases of the game, for all four quarters.  The Bears, on the other hand, only had a handful of plays that looked good.

Luckily, our lead in the NFC North was not lost, as the Green Bay Packers lost to the lowly Lions.  We got our butts whipped by the best team in the NFL, and they got whipped by one of the worst.  Somehow, I feel better about winning the North today than I did a week ago.

So, this week's game ball goes to the Detroit Lions.  Download your morning-after thoughts below.

Bottom Line

The Packers may be going to NE next week and with or without Aaron Rodgers, that is a tough task. With Matt Flynn, they lose for sure, with Aaron Rodgers, they are still 6 point dogs.

And not to sound like a home, but if the NFL is serious about the whole concussion issue, how do they let Rodgers on the field after his SECOND concussion of the year.

If the NE-GB game goes to form, the Bears will be playing for the division title at Golden Gopher Stadium next Monday. (I don’t think the dome will be ready. I don’t know about you, but I highly doubt the state of Minnesota has a spare inflatable dome top just lying around. Again, that’s just me.)

…if the NFL is serious about the whole concussion issue, how do they let Rodgers on the field after his SECOND concussion of the year

The league doesn’t have anything to do with that; it’s doctors that make that call. I suppose that, if Rodgers passes all of the tests, the team could decide to make him sit. But honestly, if doctors clear him, why not play him?

by Dane Noble on Dec 13, 2010 8:28 AM CST up reply actions

I hear what you are saying

but the NFL is the one who has put in these new rules, and it would make the rules seem to be a farce if doctors can look at Rodgers and say, “even though you have had 2 concussions in 8 weeks, you aren’t at a greater risk for another”

If he passes the test, that makes the tests look like a joke. With all the data out there, the one things that stands out is that when you get a concussion, you are at a greater risk for another.

i agree with dane up to a point on this issue

granted the docs get the final word, however, anyone who doesn’t think their diagnosis is influenced by team necessities is probably mistaken.

Keep in mind, it is a panel of doctors...

the team doctor is one, but independent physicians are also involved (to remove any sort of influenced discretion). My original point above was niuhuskie was saying “if the league lets him play”… the league doesn’t have any say in it.

But his second point still stands… once you break your brain, then you are very much more likely to break it again.

I know NE is the best team or whatever

but still..chalking this up to “well they’re better”…if this team is supposed to make a run in the playoffs, what happens if we see them in the superbowl, you can’t just say “well, they are a better team”

It’s just unacceptable to play the way they did. especially with all the talk of “this is game one of the playoffs for the Bears” ugh…i’m just frustrated.

So funny how things can actually be looking good after a loss.
Somehow, I feel better about winning the North today than I did a week ago.

But that truly is what the situation is here. No one was chalking this Bears/Pats game up as a win. Sure it would’ve been freakin’ sweet if they had won. And I would’ve liked for the Bears to have had a better showing, but they didn’t and it is what it is.

And what it is, is a game lead with three to go. Along with a chance to close the division next week with a win, and a Packer loss. I didn’t see that coming when Week 14 kicked off.

With that said, the Bears better pick themselves up after that dismantling. They were outplayed and out couched in all three phases. I don’t care how good New England is. To get beat like that at home is embarrassing. Quite frankly, New England wanted that game more… That’s embarrassing too.

The Patriots did what they were supposed to do

Tom Brady did what any great QB is going to do, exploit the weakness of his opponent and take what the defense gives.

The Patriots played a great game. They did not however expose any glaring weaknesses that the coaching staff and most of us who follow WCG didn’t already know about. Certainly many blown coverages, for the most part though, he picked apart the defense, putting his receivers in the soft part of the zone and delivered the ball. Their running game was good enough to keep the defense guessing and with the experience up front, well, we all saw what happened.

All I could do was cover my eyes and scream “MOMMY, MAKE IT STOP!!”

I really did not want to see another team provide useful game film to our remaining 3 opponents. Sigh. Anyway, we are better than all 3 of our remaining opponents, so lets run the table and enter the playoffs with some momentum.

What an embarrassing loss

Its not embarrassing just because of the score, but because of the way we played. How does a Chicago Bears team look so awfull in the snow? I mean, I understand the O-line play (It was already a weak spot that was magnified by the bad weather) but aside from that they looked like they had never seen snow in their lives.

by IndyBearsFan88 on Dec 13, 2010 8:52 AM CST reply actions

Come on, really...

The packers with or without Rogers have a pretty tough task ahead of them going on the road. The bears are based on getting turnovers and with or without Favre, I see the bears generating a few against the vikings. The patriots are a great team with an offense Tom Brady has been operating for 11 years. Who would have thought week 14 of the “perfect season” that the Giants were gonna win it all? Any thing can happen in the playoffs. I say beat the vikings and they are in. Brady will throw the Bears a bone and take out the packers.

i’m curious to read what Wilt and others see as the primary areas that the Patriots homed in on.

The Pats are a methodical offense and with the weather like it was the advantage was to NE. They have a better QB and a better o-line. As soon as I saw the snow I knew the Bears were doomed.

by Maelvampyre on Dec 13, 2010 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

I won't try and speak for Lester, but from my perspective,

the Pats did what a lot of teams did to us this year… found holes in the zone. They had the ability to do that because we didn’t generate any pressure on Brady.

Our defense is predicated on getting the QB to make early decisions… any NFL QB, if given enough time, will find the WR, who will always get open with enough time. Especially when that QB’s name is Tom Brady.

No QB pressure + untalented DBs = Exploited zone coverage

by Dane Noble on Dec 13, 2010 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

it's as simple as that...

Brady has a good O-Line, he had time, the Bears defenders dropped into their zones and didn’t have the footing to react quick enough to stop them. The Pats ran the ball enough early to keep the Bears honest, and then that 40 minutes time of possession made it so the Bears offense couldn’t get anything going.

The game went exactly as I feared it would.

by jimribs on Dec 13, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

As I posted before this game...

I expected the Bears to go 2-2 in the final 4 games beating the ‘queens and Packers. That puts the Bears into the playoffs, likely the #3 seed. I played around with the playoff calculator and even if the Pack wins the next 2 and the Bears lose the next 2 the winner of the Bears-Packers game is the division champ. If the Bears beat MN this week, it’s almost impossible for the Pack to catch them.
Yesterday’s game was something the entire Bears organization should be ashamed of, not because they lost, but because they were NEVER in the game. I hate any loss, and I get that few if any teams are going to win all of their games, but to not even be competitive is the issue in this game. It’s these debacle games that get under my skin and further my distaste of Lovie’s ability to prepare and motivate. In the end, it doesn’t make much of a difference, but losses like this should not happen to a team ready to make the playoffs.

I'd prefer not to have Lovie return...Unless we win the SB baby!!!!

I was about to say that's bad math

But really, we have to beat either the vikings or packers to put us 5-1 (or 6-0) in the division.

if we lose two, and the packers lose next week, we’d both be 10-6, tied in head to head, but we’d have the edge in the division. Losing to the Vikings is considered worst case scenario if we can’t also beat the packers.

I see the Pack winning against the Giants.

Actually, I see The pack going 2-1 with wins over the Giants and the Bears in the final 3 games.

It’s not that I don’t have faith in the Bears. It’s actually the opposite. I think the Bears win the division this week. I see the Bears beating the Jets the next week. With That win, and the Pack beating the Giants, The Giants can no longer catch the Bears for the 1st round Bye.

So, it will come down to the Eagles. If the Eagles drop one against either the Giants or the Vikings in the next two weeks, then the Bears will have nothing to play for in week 17. They will own the Bye week by virtue of a win over the Eagles.

So, as long as the Pack beats the Giants and either the Giants or the Vikings win over the Eagles, then the Bears will be resting starters against the Packers in week 17, and I think it’s a good bet that both of those things happen.

I’ll remember a couple of things from this one:

1. Bear Weather – I’ve always been irritated by this phrase. We played the Patriots, not the Dolphins or the Chargers. The Patriots play in cold and snow too, you know.

2. Brady vs Cutler – Notice all the incredibly detailed preparation Brady made for this game. Putting footballs in the freezer, rubbing the footballs down to get them game ready, wearing the surfer’s body suit, studying Soldier Field before he got their to know where the clocks are, etc. When Phil Simms asked Cutler about prepping the footballs, Cutler said “I don’t care, just give me the ball.” That’s the difference between the game’s best and Jay Cutler.

I can see how you would think that because....

you aren’t used to seeing this sort of thing, but what actually happened was that there was a real NFL Offensive Line on Soldier Field yesterday. I would say that this had more to do with the ineffectiveness of our DL than the weather did. Funny how this defense is no different, in terms of speed and scheme than it has been for the last half decade, and yet suddenly everyone wants to blame the surface for a loss.

The surface was not the issue. The fact that the Patriots fielded an offensive line and Chicago didn’t make all the difference.

Jay Cutler prefers the newer balls.

He feels that the film on the ball has more tack. You can’t take a persons personal preference as not preparing for the game. I’m also sure that Cutler had on cold weather gear also and why would he need to look up anything about the stadium he plays 8 times a year at.

The Bears are not built to play in that kind of weather. Smallish D-lineman built for speed, Lightweight o-lineman who just suck most of the time. This game would have played out a little differently I feel if it had not been for the snow. The cold I’m sure they can handle it was the snow that slowed them down.

Peppers is huge

Iggy’s playing at what right now 265? That is not the biggest of ends then we have T Harris who is about 295 also light for a D-tackle, I’m not gonna run through everyones weight but yes they are small at the point of attack. This is based on what we are a quick speedy D. It’s fine when the track is fast but when it’s slick not so much.

Most of our D ends would be linebackers in a 3-4 and our D-tackles would be ends. We do have some weight but huge we are not.

No, but amongst other 4-3 teams...

We’re right on par with d-line weight… izzy plays around 270 (listed)…

The Giants? Tuck plays 274, Osi 261, Jason PP 270, Kiwanuka is 265… most of their DT’s weigh in around 305…

Ours? DT: Harris is 295, Harrison is 312, Toe is 308, Adams is 310… DE, Melton 260, Peppers is 285, Izzy is 270, Wootton is 270…

Harrison doesn't even dress half the time.

And he is our biggest D-lineman. The Giants also run a cover two based deffense. That’s why they were in the market for a new D Coordinator. Remember what there D looked like last year . The Falcons, Bucs,Saints, Lions, Vikings all have at least one guy who is 330 or better. Our ends are on par with just about everyone but that’s where most teams expect to get there pass rush.

Wait. What?

They run a defense akin to what we do. Have linemen like we do…

I guess my concern is, why do we need bigger linemen? What advantage is that going to give to us? Make us better at stopping the run (which ‘bulking up in the middle’ is generally used in such situations)… We average 87 YPG Against on the ground. You’re asking for more penetration up the middle to collapse the pocket eh? By getting bigger up the middle?

Breaks conventional wisdom.

Stronger interior linemen? Sure, I can go for that, but, bigger? Not necessarily.

I liked the Genghis Khan method best...

He had a traitor against him rally local warlords to attack his army after they had won and moved on. So.. Genghis turned the army around, crushed the rebellion and held a banquet. He tied up the generals, warlords and the traitor, laid them on a stone slab, placed another stone slab about a foot thick on top of them(picture a person sandwich), placed a table on it and a dozen or so chairs, then gathered his commanders in full armor and held a banquet on top of the traitors, slowly crushing them over the course of the meal. Then, in an act of ultimate hatred, he attacked the town where the traitor was born and lived, razed it completely, pounded the pottery and buildings into small pieces and shards, murdered EVERYONE in the town, salted the earth, and then went through the trouble to redirect a river over the town to utterly erase it from history.

Hungarians would argue that the Mongols did invade Europe

They did lose between 20-40% of their entire population when the Mongols rampaged through. Romanians and Pols lost a healthy portion of people too.

Oh.. and they have found a downed Mongol marine vessel in the Straights of Japan that sank during a supposed typhoon. Onboard were small round metal projectiles with corks and traces of gunpowder… highly resembling cannonballs or grenades.

That nugget......
but, based on previous online interaction on American-dominated websites

…..was made of of one part nationalism, two part pompousness and, as sad as it is to me to admit, three parts truth, not that the truth part makes it any less insulting. A touch ridiculous, as well, considering that the above quote came in response to a correction of this statement….

Imagine if Genghis had had munitions? The Mongols were a hair’s breadth away from starting on Europe…..

……as the first part may be imagining reality and the second entirely in error. But the second quote establishes nothing that would lead one to believe that the individual posting has any more knowledge of that history than those that would be degrade in the second quote. On the contrary, the first quote being in err would suggest the opposite, considering that the corrector would appear to be from America.

Five points

1. Actually, I am fully aware that the Mongols invaded eastern Europe and were only reined in by the death of the khan and having to return to elect a new leader. As for my comment about “munitions” – yes, they had grenades which they used as early the first invasion of Japan, but not really in the same league as “an M4 and about 1000 rounds of ammo in drum mags” which is what was proposed.

2. If you note, I did actually acknowledge that satsunada was correct. Just because I know something, it doesn’t meant that I feel the need to bring it to the table right away if I don’t want to get into a more in-depth discussion of a topic that’s not entirely relevant to the thread if all I’m doing is talking to myself. Satsunada showed that he has knowledge of the history of the region and I added out what I considered to be an interesting fact, that Hungarians are known to put their surnames first, which points to an oriental influence relevant to the discussion.

3. It’s hard to gauge tone in text, hence the smiley face at the end to denote the tongue in cheek nature of my comment. If anything I’m impressed, because I’m doubt the majority of Britons would know anything about the history of eastern Europe from that, or any, time.

4. If there’s truth in what I said – and experience tells me that there is – then how am I being nationalistic or pompous?

5. Speaking of which, you really are the most pompous poster on this website… hero.

Response.....

1. If you were fully aware then why the “hair’s breathe away” comment? They were not a hair’s breathe away. They invaded Europe. As to the munitions, that’s like saying that since there were no skyscrapers in ancient Greece that they had no buildings.

2. You acknowledged he was correct. Great. After he pointed out you were wrong. And I never stated that you needed to tell all that you know. I stated that you insulted a nation about something you were incorrect on yourself. You are portraying the situation as if you just didn’t include information. But your statement implies the Mongols didn’t have munitions and didn’t invade Europe, one of which is debatable and the other of which is false. You didn’t omit information. You were wrong.

3. So why the need to note American dominated sites if you feel the same way about the majority of Britons? Sounds like backtracking to me.

4. Pompousness has nothing to do with truth, nor does nationalism. For example, you noted, in your above excuses, that you believe the majority Britons probably wouldn’t know much about the Mongol Invasion, but felt the need to call out Americans specifically. That would be the definition of nationalism, which, in and of itself, is pompousness. Those terms have little to nothing to do with truth when that truth is but a slice of the overall pie.

5. I find it humorous to be called the most pompous person on a site by a gentlemen who both posted the above pieces of pompousness and feels the need to act as a self appointed grammar-policemen on a sports-based website. Humorous, indeed.

5.

Meh

New England just decided that they weren’t going to let the weather play a factor. They might as well have been playing in a dome. I think we were too fixated on the weather and how it was supposed to affect the game- we were expecting the Bears to grind it out in a ground war/ special teams slugfest. New England had other ideas.

When NE took the field on their second possession and starting throwing the ball all over the field, the Bears just crumbled. That was not the game they expected and prepared for. So we got worked. Just goes to show, against superior talent, you need to be ready for anything.

So, I’m thinking, if those tipped Tom Brady passes are picked off, if offensive pass interference was actually called on the first New England touchdown, if Knox lands on the turf instead of that guy’s foot… maybe we have a different outcome. But you can’t change what happened, and it’s kind of weird, I’m alright with it.

At the beginning of the year I did not expect the Bears would be in a position to win the division. Heck, after the Giants game I thought 6-10 was generous. So we got our butts kicked by the best team in football. Big deal. The Bears have exceeded my expectations so far and if we still win the division, I’ll be thrilled. This game? It’s one game and it got away from them.

Let’s move on and crush the Vikings and send Favre packing for good.

This loss may end up being a good thing

Non-division, Non-conference loss to the hottest (not best) team in football right before a really important couple of division games might be exactly what this team needed. Lets face it, our guys had it on autopilot for the 1st half and Brady and that CB who picked up knox’s mistake made us pay. Maybe now this team will buckle down and get back to business. We can still make the playoffs and legitimately compete for the NFC. Lastly, 10/11 wins for this team is awesome considering pundits around the league has us competing with the Lions for the cellar in the NFC North. 9-4 at this point is spectacular considering how we looked in preseason.

I didn’t think we’d beat the Patriots. I thought we had a chance, and I was hoping we’d win, but I wasn’t counting it. And watching it yesterday was just plain terrible.

But at least we didn’t lose 7-3 to the freaking Lions. How bad must you feel if you’re a Packer fan today? The Packers have been picked all year above the Bears. Everyone thinks the Bears suck and have gotten lucky. Not me- I think we’re among the top 1/3 of all teams. (I’m looking at you Philadelphia). So the Bears got beat by a great team. We weren’t supposed to win that game. The Packers are supposed to win the division and play in the NFC Championship game… and that lost 7-3 to the freaking Lions!! THE LIONS. Yes, the Lions are better than their record would indicate, but you if you’re a good team, you must beat the teams you’re supposed to beat. Period.

The Patriots flexed their muscles and the Packers got beat by the Lions. lol

It's been a hot-topic for ages...

our particular problems stem from the team not owning the stadium… it’s the City Parks District in charge of maintaining it.

There is some speculation that the team is looking at paying for an artificial surface, but are still researching the long-term affects of playing on one. But ultimately, neither the team nor city is budging on spending the money to make a big change.

We had one of the Bears beat writers on the site the other day, one that has been with the team for twenty years, and his thoughts were that we may see some sort of resolution one day, but that day won’tcome any time soon.

Dont forget the '85 bears played on the old astro turf

which was basically carpetting on top of concrete, so I am not adverse to going with that new recyled rubbery stuff that they use on playgrounds. Might actually help us as sooner or later one of our guys is going to get seriously torn up because of that bad track.

White Sox fans need not apply.

Why would we thank

a terrible nu metal band?

If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?

I believe it's a poor excuse for actual metal.

Hahahaha.

Metal with really shatty whiny lyrics, I’m led to believe.

Since when was losing to the best QB in the NFL a cause for worry

Yes the bears got destroyed by Brady but it wasn’t like it’s the first defense Brady made look foolish. Remember this year Brady beat the Chargers, Steelers, Jets, Dolphins, Ravens and Vikings. All those are top 6 in defense in the NFL in yrds allowed. Getting beat by Brady shouldn’t discourage the bears since he pretty much manhandled most defenses thrown at him so far.

Finally a voice of reason...

If you go in the bathroom, turn off the lights, and say "Da Coach" 5 times while facing the mirror... Ditka will appear and slap the wussy right out of you.

If the Bears were in the AFC East and yesterday happened I would be awfully angry

but we arent even in their conference so lets put this one behind us and move on to destroying the Vikings wherever that game ends up being played. We are the best team in the NFC North, lets win this Division.

White Sox fans need not apply.

yesterday

Yes, it was a bad game yesterday, but it was against an AFC team, Win next Mon and GB loses, we win the division.

Thanks Lions

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team(s), throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.
