The Inside Scoop: Sean Jensen returns for another live Q/A with WCG
It has been a few weeks since a Bears beat writer has joined us for a live chat, and a lot has happened since then. The Bears are currently on a nice little winning streak, and have managed to once again reclaim the lead in the NFC North. The last five games of the season will be interesting to watch, to say the least.
Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times will be joining us around 3:30pm CT for another round of questions, so go ahead and hit him up in the comment section. Sean is in his first year covering the Bears, but he is quickly becoming entrenched in the culture at Halas Hall, so take advantage of having him on board sharing his insights.
As always, keep your eye on the Sun-Times blog Inside the Bears, as well as Jensen's Twitter feed.

Your prediction for the remainder of the season
Sean, please give us your prediction of the Bears record in the remaining 5 games…Who do we beat and who beats us???
Unreasonable people make life difficult...
Prediction for rest of the season
I don’t like to do that, because there are too many things that can change, namely injuries.
It’s a week-to-week deal, based on a number of factors. I’m lucky to be 9-2 on the season, which is one game better than the team!
calvin johnson
Sean,
How often do you think the Bears will double-team Calvin Johnson on Sunday?
I'm not Sean.
But don’t the Bears typically play big-time receivers one-v-one. I think they did this with Bowman-v-Johnson game one.

Put Tillman on him.

Calvin Johnson
Well, they really didn’t the last game. Not sure why they would all of a sudden now, especially with Drew Stanton at QB.
They adjusted last year by putting Tillman on him, that's why.
Changed to single high safety and swapped Tillman over. Result? CJ shutdown. Do your homework.
Tillman always steps up to the man to man challenge
I don’t know why he gets such a bad rap

Do you feel that this game coming up is important?
It will take all the nay-say out of people about the 1st game of the season if we can put up some big numbers and truly just put Detroit out.
Also, do you feel like the bears are getting breaks with all the injuries on the opposing teams? If Sanchez is out for the Jets and Brady is out for the Pats I will say we are getting pretty lucky. But I will take it anyways.

Sunday's game important?
It’s REALLY important, because it’s an easy win, against a division and conference opponent.
The way teams are playing right now, I’m not sure 10 wins even guarantees you a playoff spot in the NFC, so they need to be thinking 11. That means they need to win 3 out of 5. That’s not going to be easy with a pair of 9-2 teams left, as well as a road date at the Metrodome.
Urlacher
is having a helluva year. What do you think his chances are on going to the PB? Also, do you think he’ll be right in the mix for Comeback Player of the Year?

Urlacher comeback player of the year
I wondered, at times, if Urlacher was having a good or great year. I personally don’t think it’s been great. Maybe a few more splash plays would change my mind. But, he is in the Pro Bowl mix, and he would also have to be an outside candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. But, frankly, he’d probably be second among middle linebackers. Minnesota’s E.J. Henderson is playing pretty solid after a gruesome leg injury. And let’s not forget about Wes Welker with the Patriots.
If the Bears make the playoffs, do you think Lovie will get a contract extension?
I know the general thought heading into this season was “playoffs or bust” for Lovie and Jerry Angelo. I’m just curious what the whisperings are around Halas Hall regarding contract extensions. Do the Bears need to win a playoff game or just get there?
Lovie extension
There is a lot of confidence at Halas Hall, and Smith has done a nice job of leading this team. He’s assembled a good coaching staff, and his players respect him and play hard for him. The McCaskeys seem to be more glass-full types, and I would think they would give him the benefit of the doubt. I would think one playoff win and a respectable loss would seal it.
There’s the possibility of a lockout, and the fact that Lovie’s already signed through 2011. I don’t see the McCaskeys wanting to dump him, pay him and then add another coach who might not even get to spend much time with the players.
If you had to name an MVP of the coaching staff
including all coaches, assistants, and support staff, who would that be and why?
by Dane Noble on Dec 2, 2010 2:45 PM CST via mobile reply actions
MVPs
Offense: Jay Cutler. When the Bears have won, Cutler’s usually played a key part. Same could be said in the losses. But, the Bears are 8-3.
Defense: Julius Peppers. Not even close. Not sure there’s a close second, based on the attention he commands and the impact he still makes (If you want proof, go back and watch the Eagles game).
Special teams: Devin Hester. He’s back in rare form, as the most feared returner in the league. That could serve this team well, down the stretch.
Coaches: Lovie Smith. No one has said anything, but I have to think that he sat Mike Martz down during the bye and read him the riot act on running the ball more and adjusting the offense more to suit Cutler’s strengths. Just my gut feeling. Martz is infamously stubborn, and the Bears’ offense has really ramped up the number of runs.
Even if that’s not true, though, Smith made some bold decisions on his coaching staff. Mike Tice seems like a good hire, as well as Mike DeBord (tight ends) and, of course, Rod Marinelli. The latter guy hadn’t ever called plays on defense, but is there any doubt that Marinelli is qualified to be an NFL defensive coordinator? Keep this up, and he may become a head coaching candidate again, which would seem unthinkable given the 0-16 season.
In your opinion
can the Packers truly sustain a late season run with the minor bit of a running game they have?

Packers run
The Packers are a fun team to watch. But there are a couple of things that concern me about them. First, they can’t run the ball, which could be an issue once the weather starts to impact things. If Rodgers and Co. called the Metrodome home, I would feel different. But they play at Lambeau Field, which is famous for some nasty winter weather.
Second, the Packers have overcome a slew of injuries. That they’ve continued to win is a credit to their scouting and coaching staffs. But the injuries haven’t slowed, and I’m not sure they’ll be able to survive another two months…
Who do you think
is more likely to move to LA should a move occur: San Diego, or Minnesota?

Who has the tougher remaining schedule, in your opinion:
GB: SF, @Det, @NE, NYG, Chi
Chi: @Det, NE, @Min, NYJ, @GB

Really?
@Det’s a wash.
Bears have NE at home, where GB has them on the road.
SF is surging, Minn… meh.
NYG vs NYJ… the Giants scare me more, and the Jets are a bit over rated. No?

What's the deal with Desmond Clark?
I’ve seen this question asked before, but I don’t believe it was answered. I feel like we could use the veteran blocking. Thanks.

Should the problems arise again...
with the offense (sacks, interceptions, etc). Do you think this defense has what it takes to carry the team to a Super Bowl victory?

How much can the new offensive balance
be attributed to Martz realizing the kind of team he has (good defense and good special teams) or is it all Lovie in his ear telling him to run the ball?

Who was at fault for the obvious protection breakdowns against the Eagles?
A couple of those sacks were from free defenders.

Should I question my own sanity for thinking the Bears match up against the Jets fairly well?

Agreed
The Jets have beaten no one. The only Quality win was New England and they played them in NY. It is also a divisional game against a team that is 9-2 also. They got shut out by GB and Baltimore. Those are 2 Quality Defenses. What do the Bears have??? Quality Defense. With a lacking offense that the Jets have the Bears should be able to rip NYJ easily.
Just FYI the Jets have a total of 9 points in those two losses also.

We will kick the @#$% out of the Jets.
Their running game gets shut down, and Sanchize is no Mike Vick, that’s for sure …
Sorry.....
but didn’t you say “SF is surging”? I’ll now eagerly await the thoughts and opinions of Sean Jensen…who I’m quite sure is now donning his Ditka Sweater-vest as we speak.

Martz
Will Martz be back next season as our OC? Just wondering if he’s done enough to get another HC gig.

Manning
It seems like Danieal is losing more and more playing time to Major Wright. I thought Danieal was playing well defensively and on special teams. Does this have anything to do with Manning being a free agent after this year? Are they just getting Major more time to get him ready to start next year?
by boondock_saint812 on Dec 2, 2010 4:46 PM CST reply actions
I thought it was Chris Harris that was losing playing time

Me too. Major Wright is spelling Harris at FS, right ?
It would be ideal to have Harris in on obvious running downs, but he blows in coverage. He could have blown Celek up for that TD, but he went for the strip and missed by a mile. If you want to call yourself the ‘Hitman’ then hit ’im man …
Pretty sure I saw Major lined up with Harris a lot during the Eagles game. But my eyes could’ve been playing tricks on me.

No, sir
You saw right. Wright and Harris were on the field, with Manning on the sideline.

Boondocksaints812 - "You named her Bitch?!? Did you train her to lie down when you run towards her too?"
Manning was returning kicks again
Maybe his legs were feeling the extra wear, and they sat him a little extra to prevent injury down the stretch.
