Keys to Victory: Bears at Vikings

There are many things that could be considered important in tonight's contest between the Bears and the Vikings - the running game from Adrian Peterson, the weather, the Bears OL- but when it all comes down to it, we just need to figure out how to end up with more points.

Last week in wintry conditions, the Bears offense looked terrible, and the defense couldn't stop the Brady Attack.  Hopefully, Mike Martz and Lovie Smith saw enough on film to not have a repeat performance when they take the field tonight.  But what will be the most important factor?

We "contained" him

pretty good last time, but he’s always Minnesota’s biggest threat. A running game from our side would be nice.

As the key to victory is not breaking your damn neck out there tonight.

I’ve got other plans for tonight, so I won’t be around here. I hope first for a game without injuries and then for a Vikes win. Either way, I hope it’s fun to watch.

this seems like a perfect set up for an AP breakout and a distracted bears team to putz around in the snow.

Wish this game was in the dome

Where I feel confident the bears could score and easily stop Joe Webb. Now? I’m not so sure. They Vikings have a better ground game than us and we won’t be able to offset that with our passing game, that’s the downside of having undersized quick receivers is they can’t make their cuts in the north weather. The martzfense does not get along with snow and rain and non-dome playing conditions.

I do share our concern...

and I ask again why this team is built for speed first when they play a majority of their games on “slow” surfaces. Now add one more “slow” surface game to the schedule and I wonder what they were thinking. However, the Bears are going to win this game, albeit it will be a close contest; too close for my liver to handle, especially after some great games yesterday. The real concern should be the injuries. Hopefully they decide to rest Pisa and a few other guys rather than risk losing them for the season to clinch a division that’s going to be theirs almost no matter what.

Unless there's snow on the field

It won’t be a “slow” surface. It may not be grippy like in good weather, but WRs should still be able to make effective cuts.

The field turf at TCF stadium should prove a fast if very hard surface.

How is it logical to want slower players because half of your games are played on a natural surface rather than an artificial one? Speed rules in the NFL. Take the Jets corners Revis and Cromartie both have 40 times of 4.38 speed is a big factor in their ability to play man coverage and be called shut down corners. 10 years ago Urlacher could run a 4.49 40 now at 4.59 he is said to have lost a step but still fast enough to play MLB in a Tampa 2. Charles Tillman came into the league running a 4.49 40 good speed for a safety but slow for a CB since then he has lost a step and is just not fast enough to play man coverage and if he jams the WR at the line stands a good chance of getting burned badly. Tim Jennings runs a 4.36 40 and the only knock against him as a corner is his 5’8" height. A natural surface when slippery favors the offense since they know where they are going speed can help cancel out that advantage to some extent.

I'm thinking AP leaves more than on ball on the turf.

Turnovers will decide this game. Pure and simple. The first team to score will be in command.

by BigGeorgeTX on Dec 20, 2010 8:55 AM CST reply actions

I agree

I chose *Other because I also think that turnovers will decide this game.

Vikes would appear to be the more 1 dimensional team going into this, so as long as our D doesn’t get worn out from being on the field too long we should be able to limit AP to 60-80 yards.

by BR0ck.08 on Dec 20, 2010 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

Offense. They need to put points up quickly.

Then play kill-the-clock. The defense should be able to to slow AP seeing as the focus me the game. It wouldn’t be a suprise if Minnesota tries some reverses or wildcat plays of some sort. As for Joe Webb, his legs should be more of a concern than his arm.

I don't remember Space Mountain being so nauseating.

The Bears running game matter most

AP will get his, but it doesn’t guarantee a Vikes victory if he gets 100 yards and TD. Keeping the pressure off of the turnover machine by running effectively will win the game. Turnovers, as always, will dictate the outcome of the game. Webb will be good for one or two, and hopefully Cutler can limit his to one or less.

Go Bears!

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

I voted "other"...

The thing that worries me most is the Bear players comments about the field and weather conditions. I don’t agree with the NFL either but the decision has been made and that’s where you’re playing. I get the sick feeling that they are going to let that get into their heads too much. Interviews after last week’s game against the Patriots in the blizzard lead me to thing they let the conditions get too them much more than their opponents did.

I’ve always questioned the mental toughness of these Lovie Smith coached teams, so the “other” factor is the thing that concerns me more than the Vikings. Going against another 3rd string QB and against a team who is having a down year with nothing but pride to play for, should allow the Bears to put up a 10 point or more win but if they lose, that says a lot about their toughness and preparedness for a huge game. I hope they finally realize you can’t keep relying on help from other teams.

What station

is showing the game locally? I don’t have the blessing/curse of cable.

First of all the division could be won with this game, It’s a division rival and the Vikes are 0-5 the last 5 seasons when the temp gets below 40 degrees.

Just because they played outdoors 30 years ago doesn’t equate to them being able to do it now. They have been sissified.

No argument there, I'm just saying

the Bears have a way of letting teams break these stupid kind of losing streak records against them. Like if Calvin Johnson had not been showing off in the first week of the season, they would have been the first road victory for the Lions in a thousand years, luckily, the aforementioned Tampa Bay Buccaneers claimed that prize yesterday.
