Hester Makes History; Bears dismantle Vikings to become NFC North Champions

The Bears are the NFC North Champions!!!

Devin Hester made history with his 14th punt/kickoff return touchdown. Those shoes, whatever type they are, will be going to the hall of fame. He also caught a TD pass. Just because he could.

Jay Cutler went 13/24 for 194 yards, 3 TD, 1 int

Matt Forte with 17 carries for 92 yards.

Garrett Wolfe with 4 carries for 8 yards. You know it's a good game when Wolfe is getting carries.

Johnny Knox with 2 receptions, 78 yards, and a TD

And an absolutely dominating performance by the Bears defense. Four sacks. Three picks. It's going to be hard to give out game balls for this one. Every phase showed up, and they absolutely dominated the Minnesota Vikings.

On a somber note, Brett Favre left the game with a head injury. Say what you will about the man, and the frustrations he can provide, but he was a hell of a competitor for nearly two decades. Hope his noggin's alright.

It's a great night to be Bears fans. We'll be discussing this more tomorrow, but for now, bask in the feeling of the 2010 NFC NORTH CHAMPION CHICAGO BEARS

Dilfer said

He hates Cutler’s mechanics and ripped on him for like 5 minutes but then he admitted one of the reasons he criticizes him so much was b/c he couldn’t do that. He said “I admit, I wish I had Cutler’s abilities” so he’s just jealous.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

I quote Donald Banks before the week 1

Last place: Chicago Bears (5-11)

Often a winless preseason translates not in the slightest to what a team will be come the regular season. But there was something entirely listless and directionless about the 0-4 Bears this summer, and I do believe that bodes for big trouble in Chicago. Lovie Smith’s guys had better win their opener at home against Detroit, because with Dallas, Green Bay and the Giants waiting in Weeks 2-4, a snowball effect could ensue.

The viking are really bad. Can’t believe the Bears will win the North, but they got all the breaks this season, avoided the injury bug and played teams that were missing key players. But I do think we’ll win the Wild Card and then we’ll knock them out of the playoffs, which will be sweet.

It is pretty amazing how the Bears have gotten break after break this year. 18 penalties called against the Packers on Monday night, the two brutal calls in both games against the Lions, etc..

maybe you can put an asterisk on their division title ;)

him and young. young, okay, i get…all-time great, and he’s got a valid point re: improving footwork. though he implies jay is lazy – it might just be he’s had no time because he has to learn new offenses every year, including the insanely complex martz offense. dilfer is annoying, mostly because he argues you need a stud QB to win a title…so how exactly did he get his ring? and, while jay might not be top 5 (o-line has a lot to do with it, in my opinion), how is he not considered one of the best in the game?

Sometimes terrible things happen to dingbats too.

Doesn’t elevate them to sainthood; they’re still dingbats. But it does remind us to have human feelings for everyone.

I knew a girl in school who had a terrible burden (her father was in prison for the murder of her mother), but the girl was a real manipulative beeyotch. We put up with it out of pity for a long time, then realized that “sometimes terrible things happen to icky people, and it doesn’t make them a saint.” So all you can do is politely withdraw and move on.

He looked extremely quick and strong on his sack

His biggest problem as a rookie was his pad-level. Once he learns to stay low consistently, he may turn out to be a starter.

Dumb question at this point in the night

but HOW in the eff is Hester able to make cuts on a field as icy as THAT? I mean, both returns (KO and Punt) were awesome. I know on the punt he didn’t have that big of a cut, but still. That field was teh suck by the time he was returning.

I don't think the field was that icy

I think the Vikings and all the workers they hired actually did a great job of getting that field ready. There were a few slips, damn few, but they were what you would expect from any field with frozen precipitation.

True enough

but by the time the freezing rain started coming down, both the ESPN people and WBBM sideline reporters made it sound like it was A LOT icier than earlier. And that’s when Hester did his magic.

This Bears team has a lot of fight in them and no give. It’s a good team in a season where no team has really broken away from the pack. They’re going to make some noise here in a few weeks.

Also...

I’m flying back from Chicago during the Jets game. Is there any chance this gets flexed to 4pmET? Or the night game? MIN @ PHI is the night game…

Everytime I see that Fathead commercial

with him, it makes me want to puke. How he swats his hand at the end… [censored]

Hey Cribbs. You’re not 1/10 the player Hester is. How about that?

Where are the fans who said Hester would have more impact as a WR?

Good to see the team admit its mistake and return him to full time KR/PR duty with a side of WR.

Re: Cutler's interception

Steve Young said this was the type of throw that made him want to stick a fork in his eye. I’d love to hand him a fork, right about now. Or how about a spoon? Would you like a spoon?

To me, the play right before he threw an absolute laser beam to Aro in the back of the endzone. That ball cut through the wind like a razor. He had great protection and was able to really step into the throw. The very next play, he saw something similar, and had single coverage on Knox, but Minn had a blitz on and the pressure came from the exact same side he was stepping into. So… he couldn’t put everything into the throw. It wasn’t a bad throw. I’ve seen him make bad throws. That was just a great defensive play, and it resulted in a turnover.

The play right before that one, he was not under pressure and was able to rocket the ball to the back of the endzone. The very next play, he wasn’t able to step into the throw, into the wind, and it was under-thrown. It’s not a bad throw as much as it is a great defensive call.

Annoying.

Anyway, GO BEARS!!!

And that was the only bad decision he made all night

Plus, I believe he was robbed of that beautiful TD pass to Aromashodu on the previous play.

last night's game

He also missed a 4th TD on that play in the end zone when #41 broke up the pass intended for Knox. Worried that he stayed in the game so long after it was decided, but great game by #6. Division champs!!!!
