Bears finally do the destroying on national TV

rather than being the destroyee. Very nice to see them play up to their ability this time around.

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

How about a "favorite plays" thread?

Since the whole game was a highlight reel.

1 – Hester’s Punt Return to gain entry to the HoF.

2 – Wootton, the Favre Killer

3 – The forced fumble/fumble recovery (Visions of the Future). Wootton grabs the ball-carrier, Roach strips him, Melton recovers. Who are your 2015 starting Chicago Bears?

Cold weather Favre

Dane- we were both right. Overall, when he was younger, he was great in freezing weather, but in “recent” history he’s been terrible. Thanks for finding those numbers!

Great effort all around last night...

The Bears dominated a bad team and made a statement. I was worried the Bears would have a close or unconvincing win which would leave room for the MSM to pick apart the Bears. Instead they blew up the ‘queens, took the division, and killed Favre; can’t do it much better than that. Add the Hester returns and now he’s a threat again. This Bears team has what it takes to get to the SB, when I pegged them as a 9-7 team missing the playoffs. I will still be critical of Lovie for the same shortcomings that made the last 3 seasons so frustrating to watch, but he brought in some good coaches, got Peppers, held players accountable and has the Bears playing well this season. He deserves his due credit for the things he has accomplished this season and I cannot wait for the post-season.

I'd prefer not to have Lovie return...Unless we win the SB baby!!!!

One item of note that no one is talking about.

I believe Lovie showed emotion on the sideline last night. When you ask??? Well does everyone recall when the fan ran on the field? Well they got a shot of Lovie while it was going on and he seems (I say this cause Lovies is harder to read than Daniel Negranu) to find it entertaining ie he grinned.

I saw that and me too
find it entertaining ie he grinned.

I also noticed a celebration on the sidelines after that fifth turnover. Defensive players were giving high fives and getting in coaches faces, talking trash in a friendly way… I’m thinking there’s some sort of incentive for the defensive players , if they force five turnovers in a game.

Just another observation.

by rdent4hof on Dec 21, 2010 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

I could't agree more...

I have long been critical of Lovie as well since 2006. I’m new to this site, but what I like most this season is how Da Bears are making changes during the game. Something I didn’t see happening in the past. I’ll credit Lovie as well with getting some good assitant coaches.

He died for real and the picture of Butkus standing over his dead body was down right scary.

Watching ESPN this morning was frustrating

that I had to turn it…..Its gone from the Bears will not win make the playoffs / win the division to they got lucky facing 4 third string QBs, 18 penalities by the packers, the callS against the lions, Cutler is a turnover machine waiting to happen (ignoring the fact that the mannings and brees have more INTs. In fact emanning leads the NFL in turnovers with 26 and brees has a INT in 10 STRAIGHT GAMES!!! You know what they would do if Cutler had a INT in 10 straight games), etc…..

Anyways First Take will be interesting to watch since skip bayless is a HUUUUUGGGGGEEEEEEE Cutler fan…..Actually wants to start fights with people over Cutler…..

THE MOST PUZZLING THING TO ME

When Wooten killed Favre… Favre fumbled and NOBODY went after the ball. NOBODY. And, if you watch the replay… it shows he fumbled before he hit the ground. If the Bears had scooped up the ball and took it to the house, any challenge by Minnesota would not have changed the play. Unreal to me.

Seen it happen in a handful

of games this season….If the QB is wrapped up they want the refs to emphasize the grasp rule to prevent injuries to QBs…..Saw one time orton was wrapped up but threw a pass for like a 40 yard gain but they called him in the grasp and wipe off the play (was against kc)….denver fans were beyond angry…..Another one was when freeman was wrapped up and the ref blew the whistle and another Defender came in and hit freemen late and got a roughing the passer call…..

Somebody on the Bears should’ve picked it up and ran… just because it’s a loose ball.

Last week, Johnny Knox fumbles and sits on his ass and watches the Pats take it to the house. Inexcusable.

Happy Bears Victory Tuesday

Despite the win, the jackass analysts on ESPN still can’t give Jay any respect or the Bears much respect. Hasselbeck was saying that Jay could’ve had 4 or 5 interceptions. There was no praise on how he squeezed those passes in a tight window. It’s official…. Unless the Bears are on ESPN, I’m boycotting those douchebags.

by frenchbears113 on Dec 21, 2010 10:06 AM CST reply actions

I hate how the analysts pick and choose their

“He could have had 5 INTs” arguments. You always seem to hear it about Cutler, but not Brady (who SHOULD have had 3 against us and 2 or 3 more against the Packers on Sunday).

True that

It happens to every quarterback. Rarely will you see a game where a reciever doesn’t squander a good pass or a defender is unable to hang onto a pick. Unfortunately, most “analysts” are greatly biased on a certain player’s reputation. It just happens that Cutler is known to force passes that lead to interceptions, and Hasselbeck seems to enjoy sounding like broken record.

Hasselbeck is on Waddle and Silvy now and he is finding excuses to blast him...

he says that he’s uncoachable and that his mechanics are bad. It annoys me that a career backup is blasting a proven starter. I repeat F**K ESPN!!!!

What a night.

Between the 2 boxes of lemonheads, 1 bottle of 99 oranges, and 3 hours of shaboinking(she said 12 minutes, but really who’s keeping count)the Bears became NFC north champs. Devin Hester, at the minimum, should be in the MVP discussion. Hands down, Peppers is DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR!

I don't remember Space Mountain being so nauseating.

by ifuwannacrownem on Dec 21, 2010 10:27 AM CST via mobile reply actions   1 recs

Couple quick thoughts...

Bears scored 27 points on offense. I know that most here are calling it 33. But I don’t count FGs where the offense doesn’t pick up (at least) one first down. Bears had two of those. One after the Pep pick, and one after the Hester return.

Jon Gruden is almost as painful to listen to as Matt Millen. Can you at least call the players by their correct names? Please? Jaws and Tirico were at least reasonable i.e. I could tune them out for the most part.

Jay Cutler has officially established himself as a second-tier QB. That’s not a knock. He’s in that Roethlisburger/Eli/Ryan/Schaub area of QBs. What will it take to propel him into the Brees/Rivers/Manning/Brady tier? A consistently good offensive line.

The defense came out flat, but dominated for 3 quarters. That’s good enough for me against a bad team. Pep is a BEAST, Wootton can become one. THarris is invisible, though the other DTs were at worst serviceable. Izzy works harder than any player I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I heard Briggs’ name called once last night. Peanut at least didn’t make many mistakes, and had two picks (one called back).

Our WRs are just fine, thank you very much. Of course, if we can get Fitz for no worse than a 1st round pick, I’d take that. But the combination of our 5 WRs, Forte, and Olsen can be as explosive and dangerous as any team out there. No need to break the bank to find a Brandon Lloyd type player; we’re chock full of those kind of guys. If we can get a Fitz caliber player for not very much, I say go for it. Otherwise, leave these guys alone. I still want to see DevA get more playing time. He can be a downfield safety valve for Cutler, if such a thing exists. Though he’s a step slower than Knox/Hester, he runs precise routes and towers over most DBs. Just gotta work on those dropsies…

Devin Hester. Nothing else needs to be said.

Why is Dez Clark STILL not seeing the field? Manu is decent as a blocking FB, and that’s about it. Clark is better than Manu at everything other than blocking out of the backfield. Why’d we spend 3 mil on this guy again?

I still say that, unless he WINS the Super Bowl, Lovie Smith can and has only earned the right to play out his current contract. Do the same thing again next year, and then we can talk about extensions. But make sure to lock up Rod and the Mikes for at least next year. Those three should stay on this team for as long as Lovie is around. Lovie isn’t a terrific strategy coach, but he’s a master motivator and, for one season at least, surrounded himself with people who can make up for his strategy deficiencies.

Urlacher is absolutely the Comeback POY. And he’ll definitely be top 5 in Defensive POY, though he’ll split votes with Pep for that particular honor.

OK, my rambling’s done. Thoughts?

He is a stud. I like big ben but without his running game and defense he is mere mortal. Rivers has lost all of wr this year at one time or another, Gates, no running game really and just produces. Very accurate thrower as well.

Big Ben had no real run game when he won the SB for the 2nd time. He took the team down to win it in the last drive...

Rivers is a choker. Numbers are nice but that’s all they are. He’s only played in one game without any starter. Most of the year he’s still had Gates who is a monster to be playing with plantar fascitis. All that matters is wins and he doesn’t have them yet. He probably will but at this moment there are only 4 elite QB’s in the league in Brady, Manning, Brees and Rapistberger. Then you got the numbers studs like Rodgers, Rivers, Schaub, Vick, Eli etc.

He was traded to Carolina for a fifth round pick...

Because he wasn’t that great at the position.

He then went to Carolina and was their starting strong safety, and looked much much better. He has always laid massive hits on people, and his coverage has been just okay. Great run support. Great team guy. Just not the best coverage guy in the world.

Per ESPN

It did not take long for Harris to solidify the interior of the Carolina secondary, where he added a physical presence and started in 15 contests. In addition to his 97 tackles and eight forced fumbles, Harris also had one interception and five passes defensed. He has good size and decent range, is an aggressive tackler and is most effective when playing close to the line of scrimmage.
