Rashied

Rashied has gone from one of the players that I used to hate to one of my favorite players on this Bears roster. Every time I see him play, here him quoted, or watch him on the sidelines, all he shows is that he is a team player. And I truly think he loves being a Bear.

Random humorous Bears stats

Chris Williams has caught the same amount of passes as Kellen Davis and Dez Clark…… 1 catch for 4 yards. LOL.

Tommie Harris has just 5 solo tackles, and one half of a sack.

One a side note as random mumbling

For a team that spends so much scouting energy on drafting pass rushers, we sure suck at it. None of our draft picks have made any impact whatsoever as pass rushers since Mark Anderson’s rookie year.

Wooten is somebody who fits the description of a young Julious Peppers

Big, yet a freak of nature in terms of athletisism. He simply blew up the Vike’s “pro bowl” LT and crushed Favre. I believe this is only the beginning for Wooten. As for Melton he really has been a decent surprize. I believe if he gains just a little more weight and continues his development, he will make us all forget Tommie Harris. He just has so much potential, and I believe Hot Rod has seen that.

need a couple of O-linemen, and a corner. Peanut has been a great player for us but he was a step slow to begin with being a converted safety and he has lost another step.

Developing Pass Rushers Takes Time

Good DEs and DLs are a premium, they seem more hit and miss than drafting QBs, it seems.

I just hope JA starts to address the OL in the upcoming draft, something he has failed to do time and time again…

by Gaak on Dec 22, 2010 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

My hope is for the following...

A. Get an elite/top tier FA WR in the offseason.

B. Draft: 1.CB, 2. DT, 3. OT, 4. OG/OC, 5. OG/OC, 6. and 7. best available prospects

Not that the needs are in that order per se, but more that the value/quality of these players at these positions dictate this order. A LB prospect might be right in the middle rounds, but not at the expense of the O-line.

I'd prefer not to have Lovie return...Unless we win the SB baby!!!!

The Bears Need Another DL?

Granted I can see the need for CB but our O-line should receive first priority. We should draft a OT, G and CB for our first 3 rounders. No more QBs, Angelo (We need to give Hanie a chance of Jay goes down). Another LB and DL in the latter rounds is OK.

by Gaak on Dec 22, 2010 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

A Big Nose Tackle Doesnt Work For Cover 2

Thats why JA doesnt draft them, he prefers faster DLs for the front four.

by Gaak on Dec 22, 2010 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

Why not?...

If the 3-tech cannot get pressure up the middle consistently, then 2 guys not getting pressure up the middle isn’t better. The Bears could get a quality DT to play NT in the 2nd round. I like Adams and Toeaina as rotational back-ups, but a true stud at NT makes that defense great and prolongs the career of Urlacher and Briggs, possibly even Peppers. Plus it give Melton a chance to develop into the T Harris replacement at 3-tech.

I'd prefer not to have Lovie return...Unless we win the SB baby!!!!

Agreed...

I see CB as the #1 priority and finding high quality cover guys past the 1st round is a risky proposition. My thought is that getting a guy who can play “shutdown” (or at least darn close) man coverage allows the Lovie/Marinelli to be more creative in the rest of the coverage and keep within the Tampa2 base.

Not that the Bears don’t need the O-line help, but I can see getting more value out of a DT in the 2nd and still get a quality guy for the O-line in the 3rd and 4th rounds. Guess it depends more on how the draft unfolds.

I just wish...

he’d entertain the idea. I think he might find it easier to get a space eater NT than the next Warren Sapp at 3-tech. I get his concept of a speedy (if albeit undersized) d-line that can rally to the ball, but I think the Bears get hurt too often against teams that run inside on their smaller DTs. Plus, I think a space eater prolongs the career of key guys like Urlacher, Briggs, and Peppers.

Remember, lean and mean doesn't have to be tiny and undersized

All they really need from a NT is someone who is big, powerful, and fast. I seem to remember Shaun Rogers used to play NT for Hot Rod when he was with the lions. Remember how devastating he was in that scheme? And he was 6ft 4 340 pounds.

This made me think of something...

Does anyone realize that the Bears draft in 2009 was more of the more successful drafts that Angelo has ever had? I mean this is the draft that many felt was doomed for failure because of what we gave up for Cutler.

With the exception of Jaron Glibert who was a total bust in the 3rd round, Angelo grabbed Henry Melton and DJ Moore in the 4th round. Grabbed Johnny Knox in the 5th, and even Lance Louis in the 7th who has played this year.

With all the criticism of Angelo, and all the bemoaning of the 2009 draft that we gave up so much for Cutler, here we sit a year and a half later with the Bears being division winners with important young pieces of this team coming from the draft… Amazing.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

Enter fail

He didn’t do that bad this year either. 3 for 5 with Wootten, Wright, and Webb all showing potential at various points. Can’t fault him for taking a developmental QB as a camp arm, either, although I think we could have found any number of LeFevours as FAs post-draft. Come to think of it, maybe he should only take players whose last name begins with “W.”

by Steve Ronkowski on Dec 22, 2010 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

Honestly he hasn't been too bad in the last few drafts

Notable selections: WR Earl Bennett, LG Chris Williams (jury is still out), RB Matt Forte, DT Henry Melton, WR Johnny Knox, FS Major Wright, DE Corey Wooten, RT Jamarcus Webb. Its definately an improvement over his first few drafts.

Knox and Moore have showed they belong on the field

and would be on the field on any number of teams.

As for the other guys… I wouldn’t be so proud that they’re getting a lot of playing time, it’s sort of by default because of lack of quality competition for playing time on our roster at those positions. It would be hard to convince NFL fans who watch football outside the microscope of the Chicago Bears, that Melton, Louis, Webb, Wooten, etc would be winning the competition for playing time on other teams.

The Bears aren’t like a garbage bag of untalented players. I am willing to bet on at least half of the NFL teams Melton and Wooten would compete for time. Louis, now that’s a stretch. Your statements always seem somewhat all emcompassing and always slightly imply that the Bears roster is an ensemble of crap and that every other NFL teams is loaded with 5 star talent at all 53 roster spots. If yoiu don’t think Melton has made a decent, if not NFL worthy contribution this year, you are watching with blinders on.

Homerism??

Fact is that the ‘09 draft was suppose to be a waste of time considering that it was picks from 3rd round on. These aren’t 1st and 2nd round guys we’re talking about here. The fact that Angelo was able to salvage players from that draft that are contributing to the ‘10 squad that’s going to the playoffs is commendable I think.

Angelo found a soon to be 1,000 yard receiver in the 5th, and a 4th rounder who’s contributing on the D-line. DJ Moore isn’t great either but has been a contributor to this team, this year. I think it’s worth pointing out instead of assuming all our guys are inferior all the time.

From the Seifert article
Smith did what was asked of him this season — get back to the playoffs or else — and is in line to be compensated accordingly.

What about the three prior years he didn’t do what was asked?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m pleased as a peach at where the Bears are right now. And I’m excited about next years potential as well.

But I don’t thing you give Lovie a big extension. Maybe a one or two year extension, with an option to go longer after next year.

by rdent4hof on Dec 22, 2010 9:14 AM CST reply actions

see how the playoff run goes

and what the labor issue is, then go form there. luckily he’s got another year signed so there’s no reason to do it now.

You are absolutely right

All of the above will need to be considered.

With a Super Bowl win, I’d happily change my tune.

by rdent4hof on Dec 22, 2010 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

Although

We re-upped his contract the last time he took us deep into the playoffs, and look at what that got us. Then again, if he wins a Super Bowl, I think he’ll have earned at least half a Ditka’s worth of contract extension.

by Steve Ronkowski on Dec 22, 2010 9:38 AM CST up reply actions

The more I research and...

think about it. Lovie is partly to blame because of the buddy system he used to employ. However, I think Lovie has realized his faults and has made the right coaching decisions and if he wins a super bowl this year or improves the team and takes us to the playoffs again next year; he deserves to get a extension.

by Mandingo54 on Dec 22, 2010 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

+1...

we all know how I feel about it. And to be fair, Lovie has done more than I had expected. We’ll see what he does, but, IMO, he doesn’t deserve an extension unless:

1. Bears win the SB this season

or

2. Bears make the playoffs again next season.

Otherwise, you are correct, they’d be rewarding abject mediocrity. Smith has been paid a king’s ransom for the past few seasons of not making the playoffs. He can merit his current salary in due time if the Bears continue to succeed. Then he can negotiate from a position of strength if he earns it or accept the consequence of not living up to it. Either way, it’s up to his capabilities as a coach now, rather then the expectation of what he might have done.

All that Lovie Smith has earned this year is the honor of not being fired for next year. The only way that he should be able to earn a contract extension this year is by winning the Super Bowl. And the only way that he should be able to earn a contract extension next year is by making the playoffs AND winning at least one Playoff game between this year and next year.

I’m sick and tired of this “once a decade” thing the Bears have going. And it’s like clockwork since Halas left us. Every 5 years (give or take), we become decent. And then we suck for the rest of the time. That’s not a good football team. That’s a lucky one.

I actually sat in the stands and saw Halas pace the sidelines. Greatest Football Coach ever. We won’t see his like again. Ditka had 7 winning seasons three losing seasons and a 8-8 season. Wanny & Dick combined for 3 winning seasons and 8 losing seasons. Lovie has 4 winning seasons and 3 losing seasons.

I don’t see giving Lovie a contract extension but not for your reasons. I think Lovie is asking for any special treatment and I think he will earn a contract extension. I’m not looking foward to the Bears cleaning house and having to suffer through the “rebuilding years”.

From the Biggs article
Not much in the way of a Bernard Berrian sighting, was there? Look for the ex-Bear to potentially become an ex-Viking in the offseason. He has fallen way out of favor there.

I’d take Berrian back on the cheap.

that was a pass straight out of the washington game.

I disagree

when the CB slipped and the safety drifted out of position the only person with a play on the ball was Kevin Knox. A great read by Cutler and to call that pass a should have been INT is just ridiculous

Radio notes

Zaidman on the Score

- Lovie told team this is one step in a process

- No told you so from Lovie to the media

- Offense feels like they have not had one complete game yet

- 1st and 30 throw to Johnny “Kevin” Knox was the old vintage martz offense that they ran in the offseason

- Amazed that the Bears are winning with a new offensive scheme / philosophy that they installed at the bye

- boers thinks they find D weaknesses better than in the past

- Zaidman agreed and said that turner would come up with the game plans but once the opposing defense figured out the game plan they would adjust and stop turners offense. Then turner would have no counter punch to that. With martz and Tice you see the counter punch in the offense

- Bears were not pleased with the sudden favre change. It is NFL “courtesy” to not list a player out then have him play even though you can do that

- Joked about the MNF announcers with “This guy”, Kevin Knox, and gerhart being a good cold weather back even though gerhart was from cali and could have played in maybe 1 or 2 cold weather games

- Thinks Cutlers mechanics / footwork is caused by bad o line play at times. Not by being “lazy” since Cutler is always working hard

- Didnt think that the vikings laid down for the Bears. Players might have been trying to hit incentives and what not and that is why the Bear O sputtered in the redzone

- Field was awful. Freezing rain sheeted the field in ice half way threw the 3rd qtr. Was pretty much an ice rink

- Bears can clinch a 1st round bye with Win and loss by eagles and loss or tie by nyg

- Forecast for Sunday is 20 degrees snow and winds in the 15-20 MPH range

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hub on the Score

- Doesnt take any joy in favre embarrassing himself / getting hurt

- This is the high point of the last 3 seasons

- If he had it to do all over again would still pick the Bears as a 7 – 9 team

- Not trying to be mean or a jerk it is great that they won 10 games and won the division

- Need 1st round bye because any team in the playoffs can beat the Bears

- Hester in the HOF depends. Mitchell not a HOFer so why should Devin get in

- HOWEVER he can see Hester adding 6 to 8 more returns to record and if that is the case should get in but in the same year they might want to add a PK or punter

- Bears are not in Super Bowl in 06 or a playoff team this year without Devin Hester

- HOF depends on how he adds to the record. Might be hard cause of rough stretch in couple of season with no returns but that was not Devin Hesters fault that was the coaching staffs fault by trying to turn him into WR

- Hester perception of not becoming a #1 WR or DB is that he doesnt work hard is FALSE. Works harder than anyone he knows

- Perception that Hester is dumb is also FALSE. He is bright guy not a rocket scientist but his not stupid and he works his butt off from what he understands

- Most KR / PR are good or great only for a few seasons before they fade off

- All teams fudge the injury

- Thinks the NFL might do something about this rule now though for all the attention it got. Might make the designation Out harder to get out of

- Bears remarkably lucky with no major injuries so while they dont really need a bye week (except for Briggs who is still fighting ankle injury) they need bye week for the percentage of teams that go on to play in conference title game so they need bye week. It helps

- If they get the 3rd seed they are looking at nyg, no, or gb in wild card game. Who would you want to face then. They need a bye to have a chance

I'm kinda glad

The NFCN Champs still get no respect, OK, very little respect.

Cutler is consistently bashed, the OL is frequently described as “hobbled together”. Almost no mention of Urlacher as Comeback player of the year, Peppers and the D seem to be the only ones getting consistent praise.

It’s like flying just under the radar.

This team can be scary good, as they’ve shown. If they keep their mental focus, and eye on the prize, we may yet see a visit to Dallas in February.

If you don't ask, you don't get. So get on with it already.

Cutler

Cutler has Rex Grossman footwork. He always throws off his back foot and it’s going to doom the Bears. Cutler’s best throws on Monday were the TD throw to Hester, the called back DA TD and that missle he threw to, I believe, DA on the sideline. The Knox TD throw would have been at the very least deflected if that S wasn’t an idiot.

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 12:29 PM CST reply actions

Actually the throw to Knox was spot on

And it wasnt the safety’s fault because the corner that was supposed to help out got burned BADLY and that safety was left with 2 wide open recievers as Bennett got a free release.

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Dec 22, 2010 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

the spot

was apparently 3 inches of the ground

by mike b on Dec 22, 2010 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

Negative

If you watch the replay from Cutler’s perspective, you can clearly see the S had no idea where the ball was and took an incredibly bad angle to Knox. When he jumped and tried to deflect the pass, the ball was behind him. To me, it looked like he didn’t know where the ball was. Now, in Cutler’s defense, it looked like his step into the throw was impeded which probably resulted in the ball being underthrown a tad.

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

but he threw it Knox. If that throw was intended for Bennett, then for sure it was a terrible throw. haha

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

Cutler saw Knox first because Knox was the first read he made.

And whenever a corner gets beat that badly there is no way an ordinary safety could safe that busted coverage. Anyways the safety had to chose which one to cover, and it looked like he hesitated when he saw Bennett get alot of grass around him.

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Dec 22, 2010 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

Cutler > Grossman

Please don’t compare the two. Cutler is light years ahead of him.

by Gaak on Dec 22, 2010 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

Reading is fundamental

I said Cutler has Grossman footwork. It’s the truth. The man throws off his back foot 80% of the time, ala Grossman. Yes, Cutler is 100 times better than Grossman. But they have similar footwork.

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

I did a little QB, and honestly footwork is not the most important attribute

As long as he is winning games and getting the ball to his open recievers then don’t try to fix anything.

by Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter on Dec 22, 2010 12:43 PM CST up reply actions

The thing is

I have not heard these “complaints” of Cutler “footwork” or “mechanics” until this year and AFTER the Bears clinched the NFCN….Is his “footwork” or “mechanics” bad at times ya but which QBs is not….Plus try to have perfect footwork or mechanics with this O line….What about the fact that even with the “horrendous footwork” or “bad mechanics” his INTs are WAY down….. Its almost like certain people are trying to find something to complain about on Cutler…..But eh what ever…..Remember when Cutler couldnt read defenses and was a loser…..Good time good times…..

I want history to erase his every achievement.....I want him to feel the disgust in the bronco fans eyes when they look on him in shame....

- Jay Cutler on josh mcdaniels firing

by CloudyFuture on Dec 22, 2010 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

MSM maybe

I remember him constantly throwing off his back foot last year too. I agree, he does it because he doesn’t trust his line to give him enough time to let the receivers run the routes. But that’s what worries me is that it’s all mental now and I’ve noticed him do it when he has time in the pocket. I think what Steve Young said was pretty accurate. Jay has all the tools to be an elite QB and if he can work on those little nagging issues, it’ll be pretty cool to watch what he can become.

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 12:53 PM CST up reply actions

+100,000!

Martz will help him fix his mechanics. However, it will not work unless he has a O-line that he can trust.

by Mandingo54 on Dec 22, 2010 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

IMO I think some of it is

because of the O line play….Now that said I will say this…..They have to fix it or he will be so used to throwing that way they might not be able to fix it…..Guess we will see….

Of Course Its The O-line

Look at the top QBs in the League- Manning, Brady and Rivers all have top tier O-lines. That’s the main reason for their success.

Right

Cutler does not equal Grossman. But his footwork does.

by John McMuffin on Dec 22, 2010 6:30 PM CST up reply actions

So let me get this straight...

We’re now criticizing TDs? Really? You know if Daniel Manning knew what the hell he was doing in the Superbowl, then Peyton Manning never throws the TD to Reggie Wayne that turned the tide in that game.

My goodness. Instead of blaming the Safety, how about giving credit to a throw that only a hand ful of QBs can attempt let only throw. Cutler threw a pass that beat a Cover 2, against the wind, in a snowstorm.

Hey Rose. I don't see the appeal!

by Dils on Dec 22, 2010 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

Really?

You think only a handful of QBs can make that throw? I bet you every QB in the league can make that throw. If you want to slob it down, go ahead. Color me unimpressed. It’s amazing how everybody gets pissed off when you question anything or try to point out something that should have happened, which in this case, was that pass being deflected, tipped, or intercepted by any other defender who doesn’t have 2 left feet.
