The Bears Den: December 27th, 2010 Edition
I'm watching 1st and 10 right now, and Skip Bayless is totally loving him some Jay Cutler right now.
Vikings-Eagles postponed, Mike Singletary fired, more NFL Week 16 - MMQB. I don't read it, but I know some of you do.
Devin Hester of Chicago Bears makes New York Jets pay - Don't kick it to him. Kick it to him. Not just Hester, but the entire Bears special teams unit scares other teams.
Rashied Davis makes key play in win over New York Jets - The whole special teams gets credit again. Just look at Hester recognize what's going on, and get up to the line to be in position.
Chicago Bears' next opponent: Green Bay Packers - Winning this game: not necessary, but it'd sure be fun.
Lovie’s ‘process’ serving us well - I like to say "pro-sess." I do not say "prah-sess."
A perfect change-up - Telander says some oddly nice things here.
Fake punt a Rex-ipe for disaster - You could almost say Rex put his foot in his mouth. You can't, because it doesn't really make much sense, but I really wanted a foot joke in here.
15 on 6: Cutler makes most of pass protection - Jim Miller said Jay done good.
Smith surprised by Sunday's shootout - I think we were all surprised by Sunday's shootout.

I can't believe the credit that Rashied Davis is getting on that fake punt.
I’ve watched that replay over and over again, that was purely a drop by the Jets receiver. The only way Rashied had any effect on that was if his “droppopottomus” disease infected the other player. I even saw a quote by Brad Smith that Davis made a good play but I watched it again and he just dropped it. I guess he’s figuring he won’t get blamed if he claims the defender knocked it away.
It’s always amusing to me how coaches are either brilliant or stupid on fake punts/FG’s depending if the play works or not. If Brad Smith catches that ball (and it was right in his hands, Rashied did not knock it out), Ryan would be praised for a brilliant and unexpected move to kill any chance the Bears had to come back. Instead, because his player dropped the ball, the media is saying what a stupid call it was. It never fails.

maybe it was because he found out rashied played a little db for us before
he assumed he made a play

and then i read this
"Everybody in the stadium knew it was a fake because they had Sanchez and Santonio Holmes in the game," Davis said. "But we didn’t know what was going to happen.
"Once I saw him roll my way and I saw the ball in the air, it brought back some of those [cornerback] instincts."

his back hand knocks the ball away
I thought the same thing until this morning. Rashied’s backhand did help break the pass up, Smith shouldn’t get off the hook because of that though.
I know you're curious Joseph, you're at that age, and you often forget to delete your internet history.
When I looked at it again, his hand grabs Smith's arm after the ball bounced away.
All he did was prevent him from possibly knocking it up in the air and catching the rebound.
Soooo technically
he prevented him catching the pass and converting……..Still should have been caught on initial try though…..
I want history to erase his every achievement.....I want him to feel the disgust in the bronco fans eyes when they look on him in shame....

Yeah, but it's a reall "technicality" on this one...
the ball had already gone through his hands and was bouncing away from his body before he was touched.
Yes the ball should have been caught
but RDavis made it hard for an inexperienced receiver to make that play. Also, the fairly tight coverage forced Sanchez to throw a less catchable ball.

I have to disagree there, that ball looked pretty perfectly placed to me...
don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they didn’t convert but it certainly had more to do with Jets inability to execute than anything Rashied did.
Yes it was perfectly placed to beat the coverage
It was placed away from the defender. The problem was that it was a fairly tough catch for an inexperienced receiver. The coverage forced Sanchez to throw a harder to catch ball.

Most impressive on the Fake
Was that Devin Hester spotted Mark Sanchez, alerted the rest of the defense, and they were able to be in a position to defend it.

RDavis said he didnt know what was going on until he saw the ball in the air towards the receiver…..Hester and Toub talked about how they saw it coming though…..

watch the replay, and you can see Hester pointing
and hurrying to get into position before the snap.

Here you go Cloud
“We knew there was a possibility they would do something,” wide receiver Rashied Davis said. “Pretty great on a short week. Toub’s a great coach.”
Davis, who is a flier on the punt return, stepped up to cover versatile Jets wide receiver/returner/quarterback Brad Smith. What was surprising about this play is that the Bears didn’t call timeout. When you see a quarterback on the field with the punt team, that’s a normal reaction. Perhaps the Jets believed there was a good chance the Bears would waste a timeout. They didn’t, and they had the play well-covered. Smith ran a quick out just past the first-down marker and the pass was there.
“I know they didn’t expect us to make the play,” Davis said. “They expected us to be nervous and mess up the whole thing. We were prepared for what they were going to do. I got my hands on him — both of his arms — so I don’t know if I got my hand on the ball or not. I just knew what was coming. I am just mad I didn’t jump at him and pick it and go to the house.”

Ah didnt
see that….Only what I saw on PGL and RDavis sounded like he didnt know it was a fake until he saw the ball in the air towards the receiver (think he even said that IIRC)……Ah well…..

Just a strange call overall.
I can see trying this on the other side of midfield, but in a close game, where both offenses are having success, why give the Bears the added bonus of field position – 5 possessions in a row.
Genius? Nah.

I agree with you, I was just saying that the way the media approaches those types of plays is always dependant on
if the work then they jump on whichever bandwagon presents itself.
Rasheid was right on smith
You got to remember he is not a defensive back Davis didnt make it easy for the reciever that play swung the momentum for the bears
Then Cutdawg KNOXED them out

I understand where you're going with this but Davis would have been all over him even if it weren't a fake
because Smith would have been one of the gunners running down the field to make the tackle and usually those guys are being hit right at the line. Again, not a big deal, it’s just that every article infers he knocked the pass away when it really was just a drop.
Any word on Earl's injury?
He was limping at the end of the 1st half, I can’t remember if he came back in the game or not. Is he OK for the Pack game?
I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus
I'd keep Earl out of the Pack game regardless of his health.
Run Knox, Devin Squared and Olsen out there. Let Earl get a little healthier for the push to Dallas.
he played mediocre fullback for a few seasons
which in ESPN’s eyes means he will be a great analyst

Devin Hester for game ball?
In four chances to kick off to Hester, they short-kicked three times — once to Rashied Davis, once to Kellen Davis and once to Johnny Knox. In five chances to punt to Hester, they went out of bounds twice, and tried a fake with disastrous results.

I think they got it right with Harris.
He made some good stuffs in the run game and the fumble recovery showed he was alert. If you see highlights from the 49ers game, the ball came loose a couple times and all you saw were players just standing around, nobody diving, nobody running to the ball, it made Harris’ play that more heads up cause the ball could of went out of bounds and the Jets could have maintained possession. Also, the pick was just his ability reading the QBs eyes and making a quick jump on the ball. Solid game indeed for Hitman.
by Chitownproduct on Dec 27, 2010 12:42 PM CST up reply actions
Didn't Harris miss the coverage on the last Jets TD?
It seemed like Tim Jennings stopped short expecting safety help (which I belive was Harris) and Harris was late to cover, leaving a Jets receiver wide open.
Also, it seemed like Sanchez was picking on Tillman all day, who played absolutely terrible and couldn’t keep his footing all game.

The zone coverage really irritated me in this one.
I know it’s the base defense, but the Bears can be so stubborn in allowing other QBs to just pick apart the zone all the way down the field. Do you have to line up in it all the friggin time? Can’t you try to confuse the QB at some point with deceiving man coverage, or exotic rotating zones? Sanchez looked like Brady for stretches of this game, just hitting the soft spot in the zone repeatedly.
In the 1st, through mid 2nd QTR, when the Bears offense was struggling… none of our WRs could get open on the Jets man coverage. It was impressive to watch their DBs on us like glue. Thankfully Martz countered it, and was able to exploit the deep sidelines.

+1
I’m always concerned when even good (not great) QB’s have their way with our D.
Sanchez just constantly dumped the ball into the transition (soft spot) in the zone. That coupled with our inability to stop Shon Greene makes me wonder what will happen when we have to face a great team deeper in the playoffs.
Conversely, I was pumped to see the OL give Jay time, run block for Forte and have an all around best game of the season. Gratifying to see the offense clicking.
If you don't ask, you don't get. So get on with it already.

"Know your opponent"
That’s what I kept thinking watching the game. Sanchez has an injured arm (not sure if it’s his throwing arm) and the Bears were content with giving up the 8-12 yd passes. BUT, Chicago did adjust late in the 4th qtr by stretching the field and forcing NY to go to vertical passing. In effect, this resulted in the final INT. Really, the coverage works if pressure is applied from front 4. There was no push up front & NY did a great job with quick 3 step drops.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we have a full tank of gas, 1/2 pack of cigarettes...it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Doesn't seem to be getting a lot of love here
But how about Forte? I thought this was one of his best games, point blank. He did a great job running strong and shedding tacklers, and his acceleration is VERY impressive.
His legend is growing
you work hard, and keep quiet, people have no choice but to love ya. I love what Forte does, runs hard, and does everything that is asked of him in the passing game.

I like how he is so decisive running through holes lately
He doesn’t seem to dance around as much these days, and when he does bounce it outside that’s only because the initial hole was plugged and he bounces outside with some serious speed. I think his speed is underrated, the guy can fly.

Chris Harris gets a mention in Peter King's MMQB
as a Defensive Player of the Week…
Chris Harris, S, Chicago.
Hard to imagine a player from a team surrendering 34 points getting this prestigious award players strive weekly to earn. But Harris did it all as the Jets were trying to win through the air, making 11 tackles, picking off Mark Sanchez on a desperate final New York drive late in the fourth quarter, and recovering a fumble in the Bears’ win that kept them alive for the second seed in the NFC playoffs.
