Keeping the Packers out of the playoffs would be extra special after having to listen to everyone say they would be a Super Bowl contender and the Bears wouldn’t even be a .500 team.
"Prohibition… goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control mans’ appetite through legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not even crimes… A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our Government was founded"

Right tackle J’Marcus Webb played physically and never appeared confused. The line communicated effectively on the field and the sideline.
He’s come a long way in just one short year. A lot of people thought he should’ve been benched, but he’s turning out to be one of the best player on this line. Good for Tice and Martz to keep trotting him out there. The guy is a monster with skill.

Can we just move Philly into the North already?
From Biggs’ Thoughts article:
10 a. The Bears’ 2011 schedule is nearly set. Each team has two games based on their finish in division vs. other corresponding division finishers. The Bears will travel to play the NFC East champion Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field next season. The NFC West champions — the winner of Sunday night’s game between the Rams and Seahawks in Seattlke — will come to Soldier Field.
What is this, the fifth straight year?
by Steven Schweickert on Dec 28, 2010 8:29 AM CST reply actions
This is normal for the schedule.
When we play teams in the NFC East (like this year), we play the team that finished in the same spot in the other two NFC divisions. Happens every year. It just so happens that Philly and Chicago have mirrored each other in regards to their place in the standings. If you think that is strange, New England and Indianapolis have done it 9 times straight!
I know how it works
I’m just being more or less facetious about the North thing.

From the Biggs article; 10 thoughts
“I am a receiver that played DB once in his life,” said Davis, who played both ways in Arena ball. “If they said play man and don’t read the three-step and all of that other stuff, I probably could do it, but once you start telling me to read three step and backpedal and all of that, that is a little above my pay grade.”
I can appreciate Rashied Davis’ honesty here. lol
**Did anyone think Julius Peppers would finish with single digits in sacks? Unless he gets two against the Packers, he will. He and Israel Idonije are tied with a team-high eight.
No. And surprisingly I’m not disappointed. In fact he should be the Defensive Player of the Year, imho.
From the Pompei article:
Right tackle J’Marcus Webb played physically and never appeared confused. The line communicated effectively on the field and the sideline.

From the Morrisey article:

And haven’t we been wrong enough this season?
Well, maybe some have been more wrong than others Rick.
Assistant of the Year; Mike Martz (honorable mention, Tice, Toub, Marinelli)

I predicted Peppers with about 10.5 this season
But honestly, 2 sacks shy i can live with, the guy plays hard every game. he has what 2 interceptions, how many forced fumbles/batted balls? He even blocked a kick this year and like an earlier poster said..how many holding calls this year? Bloodline may have more sacks, But Peppers should be defensive Player of the year.

decent writeup
but I don’t think there’s much detail about what specifically the Pack are gonna try and do. I mean the stuff he wrote is pretty much what every team attempts against the Bears d.
I know you're curious Joseph, you're at that age, and you often forget to delete your internet history.
I think he really emphasized control vs. aggressive in that article.

Offensive production:
Jay Cutler has thrown for over 3100 yards this season.
Johnny Knox needs 40 yards for 1000 receiving.
Matt Forte needs 22 yards for 1000 rushing.
Forte has also registered more receiving yards than his first two seasons, and needs only 13 more to eclipse 500 for the year.
Going back to week 12 (excluding the Patriots game), Jay Cutler has had passer ratings of 146.2, 117.0, 106.6, and 104.2. During those games, he’s thrown 11 TDs and 2 INTs.
During those same 4 games, Matt Forte has averaged 8.4, 4.9, 5.4, and 5.9 yards per carry.
It’s also worth noting that Jay Cutler has been sacked significantly more than any other QB in the league this season (more than Drew Brees and Matt Ryan combined, and more then Peyton and Eli combined)… his 46 sacks in only 393 attempts produces a far-higher rate, 0.117%, than McNabb (37-472-0.078), Flacco (36-470-0.076), or Orton (34-498-0.068).
To spin the sacks in a positive direction, Cutler was sacked 27 times in the 6 games before the Bye, versus 19 times in the 8 games since the Bye.
The Bears are no offensive juggernaut by any stretch (26th in passing and 24th in rushing), but we are definitely seeing more production than many would have anticipated considering the terrible OL and this being the 1st year of Mike Martz’s complex system.
Like you said its only the first year of the Martzfense
The O-Line has stepped up big time in the weeks since the bye, as well as now everyone has found their stride in this offense. Juggernauts take time to develop, and we just might be looking at one, especially when considering that we scored 78 points in just two weeks.

Just continues to deny, deny, deny. The offense shredded the Jets OVERRATED D yet you STILL question Kid Cutty? Well I guess he has to do that to the best in the NFC the fudgpackers.
(Sing song)...Everybody Hates Rondo...
I guess
he’s not bringing up the fact that everyone touted this CB duo as the best in the NFL. Well, they got toasted by a mediocre Bear receiving corp. When the Bears do something right, it’s always the other team’s deficiencies that cost them the game.

lol @ pompeii
we play cover two all the time, and it’s why our defence is terrible.
/sarcasm.
the line though. god! played fantastic. i don’t know if it was the jets non-existent pass rush or the line actually taking care of what they had.
exotic blitz schemes confuse the line my bottom.
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...
Regarding Pompei's article
He’s trying to deflect blame from the Cover-2 scheme, showing the Bears played Cover-1 the majority of the game. You know what I say to that Dan? So friggin what? Cover-1, Cover-2, Cover-3… it’s all zone coverage.
Unless you’re able to really pressure the QB, or confuse him pre-snap, and bait him to throw it into coverage, he’s going to pick you apart. And that’s what Sanchez did to us for most of the day. That Jets offense had only scored 1 TD in the last 3 games, prior to visiting Soldier Field. It was atrocious to watch.
This defense absolutely needs to acquire another top pass rusher and a playmaker in the secondary. I would even put those needs ahead of Offensive line and WR in the offseason.

not always zone coverage.
you can play single zone and man up against everyone else, likewise, you can play cover two and play man under.
i agree with you that a corner would be fantastic, and ‘playmaker’ isn’t as necessary as someone who can actually play legitimate tight coverage from time to time…
lastly, bears confusion technique. get 8 within 5 yards of the LOS. drop x back. zone blitz. ask a quarterback how frustrating and confusing that can be. and by a quarterback, i don’t mean trent dilfer.

Ask any O-lineman how difficult it is to have Url and Briggs pressing the A-gaps also.
Maybe just maybe their keeping Josh Moore out while they are getting him stronger. Man coverage was his best attribute coming out of college if i’m not mistaken.
Adrian Pedestrian!! Now that's funny Mr. Bayless...
Footing
I would say that the poor field conditions were the reason why we couldn’t get any pressure on the QB. It obviously affected both teams, as neither team was able to generate much pressure. So our D line looked bad and our O line looked great.
I think the personal we have currently is more than adequate. Adding talent would be great, sure. But yesterday it would not have mattered. Look what our wide receivers did to their corners! I would imagine that if the Bears signed Revis or Cromartie you’d be pretty happy. And if they were Bears getting shredded by Jets receivers you’d be pretty pissed.
I’m telling you… the reason both times had trouble defending came down to field conditions.
The Jets CBs had total lock down on our WRs early in the game
It was very impressive to watch, during a stretch when our offense struggled for a few drives in the first half, after taking the 10-0 lead. Everything we tried to do underneath, the CBs were on our WRs like glue making plays to force incompletions, and a pick 6. Then, Martz adjusted and stretched them out… forcing them to run with Hester and Knox, and we were able to burn them. That’s how you beat man-to-man… deep away from safety help.
We need another pass rusher regardless. Our D-Line is a one man crew, with Peppers being the only guy to draw double teams consistently. Izzy is a nice role player, but his sack production is a direct result of Peppers. If we had a Peppers and O-Gun combo 5 years ago, it would’ve been awesome to watch. O-Gun was incredible with Jason Taylor opposite him.

A disruptive DT would do just as good as a DE.
Just my thought, but, I’d rather have the problem the Giants have… in three legitimate pass rushers from anywhere on the line.

Lowery had the pick 6.... he's the 3rd corner.
Forte snuck out of the backfield for a two big pass plays… one of them down to the 2 yard line.
Knox’s first TD (Lowery and the safety Pool) came from a 4 WR, empty backfield set, with Knox lined up on the far right.
Hester’s TD came on a 4 WR set on 3rd and 3… Hester was in the slot, and beat the 4th corner, Coleman.
Knox’s second TD (Cromartie) came on a 3 WR set, with Knox lined up on the far left.
Martz spread them out, and made them cover 4 WRs… then got the mis-matches. Ron Turner likely doesn’t accomplish this feat.

It was fun to watch Cutler cut them up.
And I totally agree about grabbing either a top flight defensive lineman or cornerback before an offensive lineman. There’s a ton of first round talent on the DL and at CB this year.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
Yep
Our DTs have been non-existent lately. Harris has been decent on a play here or there, but is terribly inconsistent.
"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.
The lock down on our receivers had nothing to do with D Line pressure
It was just a matter of good defensive positioning and schemes. So, Martz made the adjustments- my point still stands.
Our defense is predicated on the D line getting pressure, making the QB get rid of the ball quick. We couldn’t generate any pressure- mainly because- the field was soft making it hard to get leverage and a quick step. Adding another high dollar free agent on the line or in the defensive backfield would have been a waste of money today. That’s my point.
The players we have are adequate, right now. In Green Bay this week if the field holds up, our D line will play well, and thus, so will the rest of defense. I’m willing to guarantee it.
In fact, I’d bet real money that we get to Rodgers at least 4 times this week, including two more for Peppers pushing him to double digits.
Cover 1 is a single high free safety
and many times man to man underneath… more man than zone

they had dilfer go over the seeding of the NFC….He had the packers beating the Bears this weekend because they are “immensely” superior to the Bears….Had the eagles winning out and taking the 2 seed….said the Bears will lose to the packers wildcard weekend because the packers should be NFC North champs and that game would correct a wrong…….Best NFC team right now according to dilfer is the saints after what happened last night…..Pretty much had the saints and packers penned in the NFC title game…

I'm not the fanposty kind of guy
But I wanted to point out Jerome Bettis’ new diatribe on how the Eagles are the best team in the NFC.
The only mention of our 2nd seed Chicago Bears is, oddly enough, in the same paragraph as how wonderful the Eagles are with a slim reference to how their only loss since Vick returned from some injury was to Chicago, in “arguably the toughest NFC venue.” And it wasn’t some last minute come from behind win, either. We dismantled them. Except that last minute needle-threading TD it was never even close.
No mention, of course, that if when the Bears beat the Packers this coming week the first playoff game they’ll play will be AT HOME, the aforementioned by Bettis toughest venue in the NFC.
But that’s fine. Haters gon’ hate.

Mannelly and Big Toe
Very excited about these extensions, not surprised by Mannelly, the best long snapper in the game bar none. Big Toe plays with such strength, I love seeing him stuff runs and plug up the middle, he occasionally gets to the QB too at least once per game for at least a hit or hurry. You know what position I would really like to see us draft next year besides OL, CB! Jennings may have dropped an INT but he is our best corner on the roster. If we get a young guy in there opposite him with DJ Moore in the nickel, we will be set on CB for quite some time. Not saying kick Peanut to the curb, but bring in a young guy to train up, we have to get younger in that position.
