Jay Cutler Haters

Dear Jay Cutler Haters,

Even last year when Jay Cutler struggled I did not hop off the bandwagon.  I stood by Jay and told everyone that they needed to calm down. I said "he is a good quarterback. He has a great arm. He is young and will learn to make better decisions in the pocket.  He will settle down and return to his Pro-Bowl form." Alas people did not side with me and stay by Jay. Instead they crucified him calling him a flop, a loser, and said that he couldn’t cut is as an NFL quarterback. To all those Jay Cutler Haters I would like you to take a look at his numbers through his first three full years as a starter compared to other current elite NFL quarterbacks in their first three full years as starters.

Jay Cutler 48 games

- QB Rating 83.6

- 11689 Passing yards

-243.5 Passing yards per game

-76 Tds

-58 Ints

Peyton Manning: 48 Games

-QB Rating 85.5

-12287 Passing yards

-255.9 Passing yards per game

-88 Tds

-58 Ints

Brett Favre: 47 Games

-QB Rating 82.7

-10412 Passing Yards

-221.5 Passing yards per game

-74 Tds

-51 Ints

Tom Brady: 47 Games

- QB Rating 86.0

- 10227 Passing Yards

-217.6 Passing yards per game

-71 Tds

-38 Ints

Drew Brees: 42Games

- QB Rating 83.1

- 8551 Passing Yards

- 203.6 Passing yards per game

-56 Tds

-38 Ints

Phillip Rivers: 48 Games

- QB Rating 93.3

- 10549 Passing Yards

- 219.8 Passing yards per game

- 78 Tds

- 35 Ints

(In their first 3 years as a starter)

Jay Cutler has a better passer rating than Brett Favre and Drew Brees.  He has more passing yards that Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, and Philip Rivers. He has more touchdowns than Brett Favre, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady. He also has the SAME number of interceptions thrown as the great Peyton Manning.

Jay Cutler will be a great NFL quarterback.  Have faith and make sure you know the statistics before you go calling professional football players "bad". Not to say that Cutler will not have his struggles because he will. He is a gunslinger and he is going to throw interceptions, but that does not mean he cannot be an elite NFL quarterback.  This season through two games Jay Cutler has 5 Tds, 1 Int, and is throwing for 325 yards per game.

thanks for the stats

Cutler certainly has the tools to become one of the elite QB’s in the NFL.

I guess the big question is will the Bears surround him with the talent he needs to flourish.

Guess they want more face time

Not enough people saw it the first time? Not sure, either way, Cutler is a better option then more then half the league, he’s our QB, got to support the man, especially after the beating he’s taken at times behind the line.

You're probably sticking it to the wrong crowd

I don’t think the vast majority of Bears fans disagree with you

At least

Not when they’re winning. If they were 3-8 right now, you can be damned sure the bandwagon would be nearly empty.

Jay haters

I know a LOT of Bears fans who dislike Cutler’s style and expected him to throw 35 and 10 every year and have been down on him because he turns the ball over often. I’ve had many arguments over Cutler’s talents with Bears fans.

I am a huge Cutler fan...

and I do believe he is a top 10 talent right now. He has some things to improve upon. He needs to develop a better rapport with his WRs. He needs to have a bit more discretion about some of the throws he forces into places they shouldn’t be thrown. He does need to make an effort to adjust his game as he ages and develop some better throwing habits/mechanics. Lastly, I like to see him be the emotional leader on the offense. He may be plenty engaged in the game, but when he shows it outwardly he raises the play of those around him.

I'd prefer not to have Lovie return...Unless we win the SB baby!!!!

Since there are a lot of new folks around,

I’d also encourage you to read (or re-read) this post by SackMan.

Very much related to this FanPost…

I'm not a Cutler hater and would consider myself a fan who is still waiting for him to prove himself to be considered

something more than a “potentially” great QB.

Your stats are a little misleading though because of the guys on your list, only two of them began their careers with playoff caliber teams, Cutler and Rivers. The Broncos in the year prior to Jay taking over were 13-3 and the Chargers were 9-7 (14-2 the year before that under Brees).

The other guys: Favre took over a team that went 4-12, Brady a 5-11 team, and Brees (in San Diego) a 5-11 team.

I think when comparing QB performance, especially early in their careers you have to look at the teams around them. Most highly drafted QB’s are going into pretty tough situations because the teams that pick them have such high picks due to their lack of success, as was the case with Manning. I know Brady wasn’t a high pick but he still came to a 5-11 team and Brees was drafted in the second round but, again, to a 5-11 team. Favre was also a 2nd rounder (of the Falcons but he only appeared in one game for them) and Holmgren traded for him but when he got to Green Bay, it was a 4-12 team so all of these guys had a lot more to overcome than Jay or Rivers who had pretty good systems and talent in place when they took over their respective teams. I would think that had a lot to do with their QB stats.

While I was looking this up I came across an interesting piece of trivia. Lindy Infante was the HC of the Packers and then fired in the off-season prior to Favre being brought in at Green Bay, then the same Lindy Infante was HC of the Indianapolis Colts and fired during the off-season prior to Manning getting drafted. I guess the message is if you want a HOF QB you should hire LIndy Infante then fire him before you go out and get your guy.

3 Years

Thats why I chose to look at their first 3 years. Look at their records through three years. Manning, Brady, and Brees all had fantastic talent around them. Those records are not extremely different.

Philip Rivers 33-15
Jay Cutler 22- 26
Peyton Manning 26-22
Drew Brees 21- 21
Tom Brady 27- 12
Brett Favre 26 – 19

Besides my outburst

against him after the Skins game debacle, I’ve been mostly a supporter of Cutler’s. I was more reacting out of emotion than logical reasoning, but it sure seems like with some continuity with his WRs and decent protection from his O-line that he’s definitely proving people wrong.

Is this one of those “I told you so” posts? Why else would it be here ten weeks late?

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.
