However you can get them--Bears Win! Bears at Lions Quick Recap

The "every game is a playoff" mentality continues.

Sloppy football by both sides, but the Bears lasted it out to maintain their one-game lead against the Packers.

Quick stats after the jump.

Star-divide

Some thoughts:

Try tackling early. It works.

One TD and a first down doesn't make up for letting your quarterback get murdered, Manu. Keep that in mind.

Special Teams: Please come to all the games from now on. I think Dave Toub might murder someone.

Jay Cutler has thrown 1 interception in the last 72 attempts.

The Bears are still one game ahead of the Packers--let's keep it that way.

The Lions should provide for some good matchups in the next few years. Looking forward to some fun times.

The hit by Suh on Cutler was debatable. However, not reviewable. So it happened.

Wasn't pretty... but a W is a W.

Our defense forgot how to tackle today.

You underestimate teams a lot, don't you?

Stanton isn’t exactly a guy you have a lot of film on, and he’s throwing to one of the best receiving corps in the league. We didn’t make Stanton look good. Stanton looked good onhis own. He was making good decisions and being patient. Do you ever give the other team credit for playing well, or is it always that the Bears sucked if the other team does something right?

no i don't

i wasn’t expecting a blow out here either. in my opinion, the defense did not come out as dominate as they usually do or should have against a 2-9 team. they were blown off the ball and tackled very poorly early on. they are better than that.

by mike b on Dec 5, 2010 4:13 PM CST up reply actions

they did tackle poorly

but some of that is because of the lions, who are fast, fresh off 10 days off, and better than their record looks.

Pisa AND Roach being out.

If not for D Mannings speed, they might have scored a couple more times. At least one that I can remember for sure. I was pleasantly surprised in Manning today. But the tackling really bothered me, though some of it is to the credit of Best and Megatron. Especially Megatron’s TD catch and run. His stiff-arms were all him. That was a studly TD.

tackling bothered me, as well.....

but that 2-9 number is something I don’t get hung up on. That’s how teams lose games….by looking at 2-9 and ignoring the fact that the Lions have passed the ball pretty well and have been scoring points all year. Not to mention they have possibly the best WR in the game, and the best RZ offense in the game.

It’s their defense that sucks, not their offense. I was worried all week about how the secondary would hold up to the Lions passing game. It’s a big play offense that can also dink and dunk the crap out of you. They nearly beat us twice this year and they’ve lost 6 of their 10 by less than a TD. Kinda like the Bills. They are a better team than their record indicates.

Also, I don't know if it's true or not...

by T.Moore on Dec 6, 2010 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

Can I answer this?

Having watched Stanton for a couple of years, most Lions fans would agree that Stanton playing at this level was COMPLETELY unexpected. He’s good in mop-up preseason action, but hasn’t put enough together to even move up the depth chart during a season. If you had said before this game that going up against a Bears defense that shut down one of the more explosive offenses in the league one week prior, he’d post a QB rating of over 100, you’d have been called crazy.

We didn’t expect Best to run so well on two turf toes. We didn’t expect Stanton to play that well on one week’s worth of snaps. I personally thought the game wouldn’t be this close, and I’m sure a majority of Lions fans would have agreed.

That said, good game. You guys made the big plays when you needed to and the quick passes and YAC made the game for you, which speaks to good coaching from Martz and good play from Cutler and the WR’s. The only thing to mar it (again) was a questionable call that went against the Lions late in the game, which was neither unexpected nor the cause of the loss, but was all the more frustrating because it happened yet again.

The only real positive for Lions fans from the game, however, is that it looks like Lovie is a lock for a multiyear extension. At least we’ve got THAT to look forward to.

My point wasn't....

what you would have expected before the game, but what you saw during the game and the credit you assign afterwards (though I might argue that, as well. I’ve liked this kid since his days a MSU, and I hate the Spartans). Stanton deserves more credit than just “the Bears screwed up” for that game. he played well and earned that 100 rating. I was impressed.

A lot of good things happened

The O-Line mostly kept your LB’s out, and it seems to me that they didn’t do as much blitzing as I would have, or even as much as you did in Game 1.

The running game, I’m still not understanding where that came from, as the Lions haven’t been good at run blocking all year. I’ll call that a fluke.

And, yes, Stanton played well and made correct reads.

I wouldn't call it fluke.

It wa two very nice plays. I’ll give credit where it was due. Best did a great job or bouncing it outside, and were it not for Manning’s speed, he might have had a TD on that play. And Megatron willed himself into the endzone on the next play.

I love Andre Johnson, but CJ is making a case for him being the best in the game….period.

Plays like those were why I was worried about this game all week. We didn’t match up well defensively with their offense, as evidenced by both games this year.

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 6, 2010 1:15 AM CST up reply actions

I agree completely.

Aside from a LB deficiency, the Lions are not short on talent. Now they just have to learn how to win. I think the same old “we can’t” attitude is there, manifesting themselves into the 4th quarter “luck” problems that they display almost weekly. If they can figure out that they are as talented as they are, and that the level of talent on that team is a good as any team in the league, then they will be a tough, tough team.

My thing is that different coaches are good at different things. Jim Schwartz has done a fantastic job of building a talented team, but I’m starting to question whether he can turn around the culture in Detroit the same way he has turned around the talent. They are two different tasks, and watching the Lions this season, I question whether he doesn’t need help with that aspect. New assistants, maybe?

I've been as critical of him as anyone but this, to me, is a game that Jay Cutler went out and won for the Bears.

The run where Suh was flagged for throwing a forearm, was one of the gutsiest plays I’ve seen from any QB in years. While he didn’t have the long pass, ESPN highlight type of play in this game, he played like a championship QB in my opinion. I’ll take that any day of the week.

Quinn might end up being one of those late bloomers, though. In Cleveland, Mangina didn’t develop him (or anyone else for that matter) and in Denver, Kyle has just been doing to well to unseat and get those practice and game reps. I wouldn’t call him a bust, yet, but more of a guy on the waiting list. Could go either way, yet.

how much better does this team look with meddenhall or otah from the williams draft class? especially since other GMs were wary of williams. i have to think they could have picked up a better guard than williams in the meantime.

But the way the Cover-2 operates, the better the secondary does its job, the more time the front four have to get to the QB. Definitely saw an increase in the pressure over the past few games, and think that Major being back in the safety rotation is beneficial.

Here's what I wonder.....

How will the media handle this win. Will it be another “Bears only beat lowly 2-9 Lions by 4” or “Bears pull out a come from behind victory in the 4th against a game DET squad” like we will inevitably see about Brees and the Saints, who blew a 14 point lead in the second half and had to rely on hoping for an enchroachment call on 4th down to beat the lowly 2-9 Bungles to come back and win in the final minute.

Not that I’m knocking the Saints win. Bungles should have been smart enough to know a hard count on 4th and 2 with less than 30 seconds left was meant to draw them off. But the Saints game was just as close, if not closer, then our game, and I know that in at least some writers minds we will see a valiant Brees leading his team to a come-from-behind victory in the final minutes over the talented Bengals for their fifth straight win while we’ll read a lot about Cutler and the overachieving Bears lucking a squeaker of a 4 point win over the Lowly Lions, who also happen to be 2-9.

I've been saying it all season, but no one's been listening...

Detroit has scored a bunch of points this season and still lost…same with Buffalo. Pundits look at records for the most part and not at what the teams are doing.

Detroit gives up points in the second half. Once they get that figured out they’re going to be scary good. I don’t think the Lions are that Lowly. I think they’ve caught some bad breaks. I think their going to be contenders in the future. BTW, the Lions are 2-10.

I'm pretty sure the reference is to losing....

6 games this year by less than a TD, and quite a few of them had plays that could have gone either way. But the problem the lions have is a lack of faith. Until they believe in themselves, they will continue to find a way to lose close games. It’s the difference between 2-10 and 8-4, at least for the Lions this season.

Sorry, but that is a very....

tunnel visioned point of view, Kev. I get where your going with it, being that we have seen the “worst 9-3 team ever” reference leveled at the Bears.

But lets face it, you expect a 2-10 team to be horrible. But the Lions are 6-10 plays all season away from 8-4. Now, those 6-10 plays are most often the difference between 10-2 and 6-6, but the Lions have not played like a team that you would think was 2-10 when you see them.

I’m not saying they should be 8-4. What I’m saying is that this very sight posted a link to a article about how the Bears have had the ball bounce their way a lot this year and how that is the case more often than not with playoff teams. Well, the Lions are a team that has had the ball bounce the other way an awful lot. In some games, it was by their own fault (as in this one), but in other games it was chance. Sorry, but all 2-10 teams are not equal.

What really gets me

I was listening to the Score, and one of the clueless yokels they put on was yammering about him not taking care of his diabetes.

Seems like he managed to miss the part where it was complications from his bladder cancer and not his diabetes that killed him.

God, I hate the Score. Every single one of them besides Lawrence Holmes.

That's f'ing horrendous

Ronnie took way better care of his diabetes for someone his age, having it since he was 18 way back in the day (when they knew VERY little about how to treat diabetes), than most people even today. It’s an awful goddamn disease, period. And it was even worse 50 years ago with little understanding about treatment.

I’m sure the Score hosts corrected the yokel who said that. Wait, actually, I’m sure they didn’t.

I'm not so mean. I wouldn't ever go out to hurt anybody deliberately - unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something. - Dick Butkus

Rivers

That’s definitely true, though I would say that Rivers has been as much the reason that the Chargers have underperformed in the Playoffs than the reason they have won.

Some fun facts about Rivers in the playoffs:

-He’s never been in a playoff game without an INT.
-He’s been held without a passing td in three of his seven playoff games.
-He hasn’t been bad, but he does not play to his level in big games. His regular season QBR is 97.3 lifetime and his lifetime playoff QBR is 77.9.
-His record as a starter in playoff games is 3-4.
-He’s thrown 8 TDs and 9 INTs in 7 playoff games.

Oh, I agree....

Again, QBs are the face, and the fact that Jay played very well on a Denver team that had zero defense will always be ignored for a guy like Rivers who has played very well with better pieces around him and a far better defense.

I don’t down Rivers for it. He’s played well behind a very good line and with the help of a very good defense and, for the most part, a solid rushing unit. But, In my opinion, QBs take far to much blame for losses in areas they cannot control, like special teams and defense.

I find it funny that Rivers best playoff outing came in a 35-24 loss to the Steelers in ‘08. Rivers threw 3 TDs and 308 yards with the Pitt D keying on him because his rushing game provided all of 15 yards on 11 carries. Yet his defense, his ST unit and his rushing game all failed him and the loss gets pinned on him. Funny that QB is the only position that stats show a win loss record for. Was that game really Rivers’ loss?

I've watched it a couple of times now.

It really wasn’t a forearm, it was more a punch to the back of the head/neck. Suh is going to be a problem in the division, not so much because he’s good…it’s because he’s mean.

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 6, 2010 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

Bingo.

Like I said elsewhere, he wasn’t trying to tackle Cutler, he was trying to punish him. You want to go run through someone and smash them? Fine Run through them… but just like the whole idea behind “you’ll get called for holding if they see your arms extended”… Suh got busted because he chose to deliver a blow into the back of the QB by cocking his arm back and then thrusting it forward, just like a punch would be thrown (sort of).

Next time, grab the QB and fall on him.

by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 6, 2010 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

It was only questionable because it was Jay Cutler

If it were Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or Brett Freakin’ Favre, Suh may’ve been ejected. Really.

They’re talking about it on the NFL Network, also saying that it wasn’t a penalty, and hey, let ’em play!

Here are my questions: Why didn’t Suh simply wrap up Jay and fall on him? He was in a perfect position to roll right over him. Why didn’t he put his arms around him and fall on him? Why was it necessary to give him a (double) forearm shiver to the back of the neck?

Suh wasn’t trying to tackle Cutler, which would have been easy at that moment. He was trying to hurt Cutler by bouncing him off the ground like a basketball. The ref saw this and called an entirely appropriate personal foul. You can see this from the sideline replay, by the fact that Suh drove his forearm into Jay and completely followed through, like a martial artist trying to break a stack of two-by-fours.

I’m enjoying that in the five game win streak Cutler’s TD-INT ratio is 10-3 and in the last three games Manning’s is 9-11. Especially because a “good friend” of HB’s and mine from college is a HUGE Colts fan and has been telling me for the last year that Cutler sucks and will never be any good.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

Living in Indiana, I get a lot of that.....

I have been reveling in the glory that is Manning throwing more INTs than TDs, as well. It quiets all those guys that love to tell you Manning can win by himself. Even the best QB in the league needs some talent around him to succeed. Lower the level of talent, and you lower the level of production from the QB.

The Bears had some calls go against them

The Lions first series where Pettigrew got a first down, but in normal speed he looked at least two feet short. Hester in the endzone could’ve been called as well.

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

Why do all the headlines say, "helped by controversial call?"

The call being the hit on Cutler?

Really… this is the focus of the game? Are you f’n serious?

Wanna talk about controversial calls… how about the fumble by Detroit (about a drive earlier), when the refs were scrambling in the pile to figure out who had the ball, and the Bears stood up from the pile with the ball in their hand, and yet the Lions were still awarded possesion.

F U media, and NFL. The Bears won… deal with it.

exacty I stated it earlier

we got 8 yards on the penalty and would have picked up the first down with out it. No bearing on the game but the tool AP writer puts that in the headline? How do these guys keep their jobs. One bad thing about the internet, every idiot can write something about anything where as newspapers really had professionals doing knowledgeable articles instead of this drivel sometime.

I'll Take It

And hopefully we can chalk up the Bears’ struggles to it being a division game. Now I feel we must root for the Patriots Monday night because Bellicheck does not often lose two games in a row. That being said, I imagine the Bears will play a lot better next week too.

Also, Jay Cutler is awesome. Matt Forte and Earl Bennett are beasts. And congrats to Jay for sealing his first winning season since high school!

Oh and let's give it up for Lovie Smith!

Only the 10th win under him when trailing after the half and after 3 quarters. This team is playing hard for him. I’m still not saying we should extend his contract, but he is doing a great coaching job this year. If he can put together back to back winning seasons, then I’ll maybe want to see a modest (2-3 year) extension (but I know that won’t happen since extensions seem to come in 4 year increments.

Dilfer is the poor man version of Kyle Orton. Orton is a game manager, just as Dilfer was, and may lack some physical gifts that make QBs elite just as Dilfer did. But Kyle makes good decisions, is actually accurate and happens to be likable, as well. Dilfer fails (failed) miserably by all of those tests. Dilfer didn’t win a Super Bowl. The Tampa Defense won a Super Bowl in spite of Dilfer.
