Scouting the opposition: Jets at Patriots- MNF Open Thread

Next week, the Bears will play host to the New England Patriots, and two weeks after that, the New York Jets.  You can bet your rear end that tonight many of us Bears fans will be doing the exact same thing that the Bears players and coaching staff will be doing: Watching the Pats and Jets go at it on Monday Night Football.

So, you've got a little time to finish your chores for the evening, get your clothes ready for tomorrow (don't you hate having to wake up and iron your clothes the morning after a late night?), and hunker down with your notepad and #3 pencil... kickoff is at 8:30pm ET; Are you ready for some scouting out of the enemy football?!

Injury reports after the jump.

Star-divide

Jets: (Nearly their entire damn team was listed as probable, so I'm not including them)

OUT
DB Jim Leonhard (IR, calf, shin)

QUESTIONABLE
DB Dwight Lowery (LP, concussion), RT Daimen Woody (LP, knee)

Patriots:

QUESTIONABLE
DE Myron Pryor (DNP, back), CB Jonathan Wilhite (DNP, hip), DE Mike Wright (DNP, concussion)

PROBABLE
QB Tom Brady (LP, right shoulder, foot)

Seriously hate both teams.

Hoping they just come out and beat the shit out of each other. I am a fan of Leonhard’s though so it sucks to see him on IR.

Jeez, that game last night between the Raven and the Steelers was a defensive slug-fest.

It had to have been around July/August. This is honestly the first I’ve thought of it regarding Chicago’s season. The division title would be much sweeter, but I’ll be happy with the wildcard if it comes down to it.

Well if luck is on our side...

I don’t like to wish any injury on anyone, but if Brady and/or Sanchez get hurt in tonights, game and can’t play for the next 2 weeks, that’d be freaky, and I would have to think the stars are aligning for the Bears, and Lady Luck may be on our side, she was on mine this morning, I won $100 on a free $1 scratch off I got as part of a gift.

Seems like it wouldn’t be hard for the Tech people to push the play to a handheld on the sidelines in near realtime. Give a coach 2 quick looks and then decide if he throws the flag. The tech is available to do this, is that just too new school for NFL high ups?

the Pats will be higher than a kite going into next Sunday’s game. Hopefully, they’re still high on their own stink after this.

"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.

I am petrified of the Pats right now

Seriously, I never trust Lovie versus good AFC teams, but the Pats are just destroying. I could easily forsee a 3 or 4 pick game for Cutler.

I only hope that I am entirely wrong and that the short week and traveling has a serious effect on the Pats because DAMN they look unbeatable tonight.

"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

I think Lovie's defense is best equiped for the Pats

We’ll rush with 4 and if he picks us apart, so be it. The keys is roughing up those receivers and asking our offense and Hester to be great. It’s possible

Yeah but it worked!

by Dils on Dec 6, 2010 10:09 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah I am hoping that Martz is watching tonight

Because I think he can figure out how to use Knox or Bennett like the Jets are using Holmes tonight (Holmes has like 80 or 90 yards). The keys will be beating the blitz and staying balanced to keep Brady off the field. On defense it should be similar game plan to the Eagles, get pressure with 4 and tackle, tackle TACKLE!! Pats rely on yards after catch.

To have had an owner and coach that understand the fundementals of football and realize that a QB, no matter how great in potential, cannot and will not succeed without an offensive line. We aren’t doing the orange unis this year (because of the ‘40s throwbacks) so no chance of that. Plus teams don’t usually wear throwbacks on the road.

jets = massively overrated

pats are very good, no doubt, but this game exposed the jets as frauds. they barely beat a bunch of bad teams. and sanchez…maybe not as awesome as the analysts say he is. the fact that they put up 3 vs. the pats D says a lot. if our front 4 plays the way it is capable of, it should be a great game on sunday. and given how badly we played in the first half on sunday, i think its pretty likely we come out insanely on-point on D in this game.

by guy incognito on Dec 6, 2010 10:45 PM CST reply actions

Agreed, the Jets aren't the tea, they claim to be

Embarrassed is what happened tonight. I thought a Ryan coached defense was incapable of being blown out? Ryan should have dropped 7 or more defenders into coverage as Brady had plenty of time despite the consent but ineffective Jet blitzes. Did Revis even play tonight? I don’t remember his name being called. Total failure from the Jets, we gotta show up in force next sunday, its going to take a total team effort to get the job done on Brady and Co.

takes a serious effort to chew up as much clock as possible, and leave their offense on the side lines most of the game. keep our d fresh, and what ever we do lets not kick them the ball first.

Bill Swerski: Alright, alright! Now, let me shift gears here for a moment. What is God's role in this? Obviously, he's rooting for Da Bears.

by LightsOutVegas on Dec 6, 2010 11:09 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, but you have to keep the ball away from them

The Patriots jumped out to the early lead, and I think that New York let go of their ground game way too early. Tomlinson and especially Greene were running ball effectively, they should have stayed with that and given Sanchez some more play action short passes based on the running game than they did. You can’t win a land war in Asia and you can’t win a passing war with Brady. The New England defense is getting better, but it’s still vulnerable and a bit soft up the middle. While the Bears aren’t great between the tackles, the offense has been very good at controlling the clock.

Oh that and you have to do anything you can to hit Brady. Early and often. This is a lot easier said than done. I do think that our linebackers give us a better matchup than the Jets had. But getting in this guy’s head is something other teams rarely do. If the DL can do this at least a bit the Bears have a chance.

In addition to rooting for the Bears as always, I will be the Lions biggest fan next Sunday

Hopefully, the Lions can continue their momentum against us into the game and defeat the overrated Pack.

Dont forget the Packers have some tough games ahead as well

The Lions, the Patriots, the Giants, then Bears to wrap it up. The Packers could easily drop at least one of these games if not two. I could easily see the Packers losing the Giants game, they beat the Lions and the Pats (Rodgers shreads the weak Pats secondary) meaning we win the next three and that game at Lambeau is meaningless in terms of the NFC North, right?

Actually seeing quite well including the stats for 14 full weeks of football

Where the Patriots have given up over 3000 yards is passing yards to their opponents this season. Pats are ranked 31st out of 32nd and only because they had a good game against the Jets. Not to mention they give up close to 400 combined yards a game, again ranked 31st out of 32nd.
Basically they are the worst team in football as far as giving up yardage per game. They are still winning because of Tom Brady, plain and simple.
Who is blind now?

Well I know my brethren has given you the stats for yards already

and although that may be a bit skewed due to NE winning all the time and teams having to throw to catch up, You opposing QB rating is 87.3 or ranked 20th in the NFL. Better than the stat line for yardage but definitely below average. Yet even with that you are giving up 114 yards per game on the ground and an average of 4.3 per carry and ranked 19th against the run. I guess you can have a below average defense when you have one of the best offenses in the league and aruably the best QB.

Yeah that can definitely happen

I think the bears will go 2-1 and the pack will go 1-2. That would mean the bears are 11-4 and the cheeseheads are 10-5. Do the bears win the tiebreaker if they lose the final regular season game?

If the Pack go 1-2 and we go 2-1....

Then they will be 9-6 and we will be 11-4, and week 17 likely won’t mean anything, unless we are competing for a bye week with NYG or the Eagles.

I think

BB has had Brady listed as questionable for every game since like 2005.

You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.
