that reminds me of a Peggy Hill quote
“I thought I’d be cool like Mr. Kotter, but it turns out I’m just a giant loser like Gabe Kaplan”
Regarding this whole dirty hit thing by Suh...
maybe I’ve missed it in all the columns but the one person who I haven’t seen comment on it is Jay Cutler. I don’t remember him calling for a flag immediately after the play either. I tend to agree with Olin Kreutz on this and I don’t think it was necessarily a dirty hit, just a really hard one. My guess is that if Julius Peppers would have dished out the same hit on one of our opponents, Bears fans would be praising him for his aggressiveness and leadership.
Kind of on the same subject, that play is a further illustration of the toughness and competitiveness of Mr. Cutler. As I’ve said many times since we acquired him, I was always a little skeptical and taking a wait and see approach with him but he is quickly becoming one of my favorites by his actions and attitude. Last week when we lost Ron Santo, the first person I thought of was Jay. I wonder what his reaction was to see another professional athlete, who dealt with the same disease he suffers from and performed at the highest level, pass away. While Ron’s eventual cause of death was from cancer, I would have to think that Jay and other athletes who suffer from diabetes, saw the toll that it took on this man’s body over the years. Thank goodness for advancements in medicine, which should make it slightly easier for this generation, but thinking of what Santo went through and knowing Cutler’s situation it makes me respect both of them even more.
at real time it looked dirty
and that’s when you have to call the penalty. I am so sick of people being outraged about that penalty, it was a hard one to call in real time, and it ended up being a 7 yard penalty anyways, big whoop.
When I saw it
I was screaming for a flag because I thought he used his forearm to deliver the hit to the back of the head…..But when they slowed it down I was like oh he just pushed him really hard…..Ah well….They could of still stopped the Bears with a goal line stand but eh they didnt…..

You're right, in real time it did look like a penalty and I have no problem with the reps calling it...
I’m referring to some of the reaction after the fact by Angelo and others who are trying to make it sound like it was similar to the Charles Martin/Jim McMahon incident. I don’t see it that way at all. I also, agree that the penalty meant next to nothing in the overall scheme of things, so the whole thing is being way overblown, in my opinion.
The funny thing is
if Suh had wrapped him up and actually tackled Jay there probably wouldn’t have been a penalty and there would have been a greater chance of Jay getting hurt. Like when Peppers hit Stafford clean and ended his career season.
Exactly
In real time, it did look dirty. I thought it was a forearm to the back of the head, especially how violently his head jerked forward. That seemed to me to be the very definition of intentional roughness- and/or a blow to the head. So I very much expected to see a flag.
They slowed it down and I was wrong, it was just a violent legal hit. I believe he already had a first down, and we gained 7 measly yards on the penalty. Big freaking deal.
Either way, it wasn’t as earth shattering/ game changing as many people wrote. The game changing series happened when the Bears held Detroit to a field goal after Cutler fumbled deep in Bears territory.
What gets lost in the "Controversy"
is that if they don’t throw the flag, we still have 2nd & 2 inside the 15, with 9 minutes left in the game. It’s not like the PF moved us up the field in the waning seconds.
Regarding Suh's hit
given how the league is fining players for rough hits and putting a greater emphasis on “player safety,” there’s no way he doesn’t get the flag on that play. He was in position to make a regular, wrap-up tackle and chose to shove Cutler to the ground instead. Granted I’m a fan of hard hits, but there’s a difference between playing hard and playing dumb, and in my opinion that was a dumb play.
First post on the site, long time lurker (long enough to remember smudgers and his “Lovie Smith Emotion Chart”), looking forward to some intelligent football conversations!
Another week
Another article by Morrissey that makes me say: Morrissey is an idiot.
Starting to hear things about the mcdaniels firing
Guess he got into a shouting match monday with 2 players and that was not the first time….orton was not thrilled with mcdaniels (saw saw a micd up segment on NFLN where mcdaniels told something like see the play here orton replied my bad and mcdaniels snapped back I dont want to hear my bad anymore just make the fricking (edit) play). Also guess some of the players left from the old team were not happy seeing the talent jettison by mcdaniels. Thought mcdaniels let emotion get to him and dictate what he did (like peyton hillis unknowingly hitting on mcdaniels wife apologizing so decided not to play hillis then trading him in the offseason)…..
Was a mess over there…..Seeing things like that makes me thank god for Lovie (even if I am not his biggest fan anymore)…..

I always thought it was a dumb move on Bolen's part from the start.
Not getting rid of Shannahan, they hadn’t been to the playoffs in quite awhile so I applaud him for not settling for past success, but to turn your entire football operation over to a 32 year old kid, who had never been a HC, much less a GM/HC, at any level, was asking for this. Also, if McDaniels showed up for the interview with his cut off sleeved hoodie, I would have launced him right there!
I always appreciated the smug, yet deer in the headlights expression on his face.

Late entry to the Den:
PFF’s closer look at the Bears-Lions game:
Pass protection is still a major issue for Chicago, with both Frank Omiyale (-2.7) and J’Marcus Webb (-2.7) struggling badly in pass protection (both players graded positively against the run). They combined to give up ten total pressures on Cutler during this game, including a pair of sacks, and it’s an awfully big ask to expect a quarterback to play well in spite of that kind of protection longterm. If the Bears have serious aspirations of challenging this season they need to figure out a way to reliably protect Cutler, especially around the edge.
Click the link for the full article.
I would expect
that if they get into really big situations late and Webb is still struggling, Shaeffer (sp?) gets to step back in and be a late time hero.

His run-blocking has gotten better,
but his pass blocking has not. However… he just needs the reps. He plays high because he is so damned tall (6’8" I believe), but I don’t think you take away playing time yet. We know what we get with Shaffer, so unless Webb really just takes a turn for the worse, let’s let him finish out the year and see what he can do. It’s all about the reps…
I agree... he needs time
But it’s also the mental mistakes that concern me. I have no way of knowing who exactly is at fault, but it sure looks like he blocks the wrong way on occasion when pass blocking.

I, for one, am losing patience with Webb
I know he’s a “project” and he needs reps and all that, but at what point are a players growing pains so bad they start hurting the team? (Especially a team headed for the playoffs?)
Is Webb really that much better than Shaffer? Was he lighting it up in practice? I guess I’m not seeing enough to understand why he deserves to be a permanent starter. But i guess for “continuity’s” sake we leave him in…for now.

If we See a bookend in the draft next year then by all means draft him.

This is not news. Not good either.
Our guys have steadily improved over the last 5 weeks. They still aren’t the Pats OL. (Did anyone see how much time Brady got last night?? – Frightening)
Our new starting 5 are really starting to gel, but they do have their limitations. I thought that was why we had Davis and Manupupu in their as well.

Brady's time in the pocket is unreal.
I think he’s got enough time to put his Bieber do back in a ponytail, put on an apron, bake a cake, and still dominate pretty much every NFL defense. Hopefully next week will be the exception.
Think three of that line were taken in the first two rounds and none of them are called Chris Williams. You reading this, Jerry?

Suh Hit
The problem I have with this hit, is that he wasn’t trying to tackle Cutler. If he hit him that hard while wrapping up and trying to punch the ball out fine. But, his quote where he says something to the affect that he was trying to make something happen, makes me think since he wasn’t trying to tackle or force a fumble, he was trying to hurt Cutler.
Interesting...
The Bears played their nickel defense on 72 percent of the Lions’ snaps.

I want Bill Smith's job
Anyone know how I could get it? Haha.
I love the way Bennett and Forte are playing right now. If they stay healthy we’re looking at an awesome offensive core for the next few years.
"I feel like the pieces are in place. But we have to execute...It's about execution. You have to execute. You have to have a scheme that facilitates the strengths of your players. If it doesn't, then it's a bad scheme. It's that simple. So we feel real good about the parts in place on offense."

Interestingly, this is a statement in which both core and corps make sense. Slightly different meaning but, still, interesting.

From Pompei
Tillman was assigned to cover Johnson for most of the day, and he did an excellent job. On passes thrown to Johnson with Tillman on him, Johnson caught two for 20 yards and Tillman broke up a third.
Tillman always steps up what asked to go shadow a receiver.

really?
The last time he was put on him all day he did ok… He took Plax back when he was still good and shut him down… Name a time he was put on a WR all day and totally blew it?
The Bears don’t do it often, but when they do Tillman steps up to the challenge.

A time?
How about two times, both related to the Lions (since that is he theme)…
2009 in Chicago: Tillman covering Johnson; CJ has 8 catches for 133 yards. Tillman fell down after a double move on one route, and got jusked out of his cleats on a quick slant on another.
2008 in Chicago: Tillman covering Johnson: CJ has 8 catches for 94 yards and 1 TD. Johnson burned Tillman 3 or 4 times in man coverage that game (it didn’t help we had no over the top help, but still), and at one point got thrown to the ground by Johnson while trying to tackle him.
Look, Tillman has had his good games, but he has also shown a proclivity for being very poor in pass coverage. He’s good in run support, and good at causing turnovers.
so you found 2 bad Tillman man to man games Big Deal!
But name a better corner option of the Bears to take the task? Johnson is one of the best receivers in the game today. He’ll make all pros look bad

I also believe last season Tillman was on OchoCinco
When the Bengals blew us out!! Not 100% sure though.
Wait a damn minute. You asked for one single example, and I gave two.
Now, if you spin it around, and focus on who we have as a better option, then I won’t argue with you. Tillman is our only option to match up with tall WRs.
Bowman is good, and he will probably factor in long-term, but he’s not developed yet. Everyone else are midgets.
I’ve been saying forever that our DBs are not talented enough to sustain pass coverage without a good pass rush. That’s why Dan Orlovsky even had a career game against us in 2008.
We’ve got guys that are really good against the run, but we have no one who is truly good against the pass. All of our safeties are strong safeties, and no one can cover WRs.
Good thing
We’re not playing a pass happy team with a future HOF QB and a boatload of offensive weapons this week, eh?
[dies]
Wasn't it Tillman
Who got burned by Berrian for that 99 yard play a few years ago?

some people just hate Tillman...
and would hate whatever other corner had to cover the best WR on the opposite team every game. Tillman has been a good Bear, and there is no way you can overlook his fumble creations.
I don't hate Tillman,
and I defitinely acknowledge he is good at creating turnovers.
Unfortunately, those turnovers often help cover up the fact that he is such a liability in pass coverage. For years we’ve seen him fall down, be out of place, get juked on double moves, etc.
He is decent in run-support, but that is secondary in his job description. his primary job is pass coverage, and he just is not that good.
Sure, he’s had flashes, but absolutely zero consistency.
No let me try...
Tillman always steps up falls down when asked to go shadow covering a receiver.
