Bears sign Herman Johnson
From Larry Mayer: "Johnson was selected by the Cardinals in the fifth round of last year’s draft out of LSU. He spent the entire season on Arizona’s 53-man roster, but was inactive for all 16 games. The 6-7, 360-pounder was on the Cardinals’ practice squad for the first 13 weeks this season.
Nicknamed "The House," Johnson weighed 15 pounds and 14 ounces at birth, making him the largest baby ever born in the state of Louisiana."
Barry Turner was relased to make room for this move.

You can never have to big a Johnson.
Sorry guys had to say it.
If you don't ask, you don't get. So get on with it already.

Positives: Naturally massive man who looks to be in reasonable shape despite weighing in at nearly 350 pounds. Good initial quickness off the snap despite his size. Gives the defensive tackle a formidable jolt with his hand punch and settles into position. Generally plays with good leverage and has the upper body strength to extend his arms and keep the pass rusher at bay. Surprising lateral quickness and balance for a player his size. Alert pass blocker who keeps his head on a swivel. Good straight-ahead drive blocker. Gains movement on his initial surge and has the hand placement and strength to turn defenders from the hole. Slow to get to the second level, but gives good effort and is a such a huge diversion, he can effectively block defenders from the ballcarrier without making the play.
Negatives: Only has one season of starting experience and teamed with left tackle Cirron Black, a legitimate NFL talent in his own right, to anchor the left side. Can improve his sustaining of blocks. Can get fundamentally lazy and attempt to latch on to defenders, rather than moving his feet, making him susceptible to coverage sacks. Has struggled with weight issues in the past — arrived at LSU at more than 400 pounds.
what is going on here???!
they cut one of their uh, coveted DL prospects? for a prospect in the one group most suspect on the entire team? this seems very un-halas hall like.
Agreed.
But a good move IMO. Turner wasn’t doing much, might as well bring in a young, massive dude to see what he can do. He played in the SEC as well, so I’m happy with that alone. :)
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
yeah he is enormous it sounds like
the other part of the article i didn’t like, if only because i liked watching freddie barnes in camp.
The Bears also made several practice-squad moves Tuesday, signing linebacker Marcus Buggs and wide receiver Jeff Moturi and terminating the contracts of defensive end Ervin Baldwin, wide receiver Freddie Barnes and tackle James Marten.
that baldwin guy has been on the practice squad for awhile it seems like. while even getting close to the nfl is great, practice squad life must suck.

I'm a fan of Barnes' myself.
Really wish he’d got a decent shot here. Guess they just didn’t see enough in him. Hopefully he’ll land somewhere and become successful. As far as PS goes, hell they’re getting paid to be on it, can’t be too upset with that. If they work hard enough you’d think they would eventually get a shot.
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
I liked him a lot too

agreed..
Tice really seems to like his linemen BIG. And I Think he is right.. Cutler is tall enough to throw over them, so why not beef up the line?

forgot….I wanted the Bears to draft him in 09….IIRC I saw a lot of 3rd round grades on him…..Only remember because of that biggest baby born in the state comment…..ESPN ran with that when he was waiting on his call…..

I think a 15 pound baby would be a better blocker than most of the offensive lineman on this team.

Yeah i just read that aswell
I know he played LG in college and was on the roster for the Cards as a guard. It seems we will have another case of CWS (Chris Williams Syndrome)
13. It's a magic number
This would be the perfect time for a revival of “Prove it” but, given the circumstance, I’ll believe you.

Reading the reports on him...
Looks to be a brawler that can move, rather than a finesse guy. Huge SOB here. 6-7, 364 pounds. Bigger than Webb. He was projected as a guard for pretty much everything I’ve read on him. Which is good. Williams isn’t particularly strong down there, and Garza, while solid, is getting older.
That being said, I wouldn’t play this guy outside of special teams until next year. Consistency is what makes a line good, and changing personnel midstream is a recipe for disaster. He’ll probably be the primary backup for both guard positions, and slide into the LG spot next year.
At least it means the Bears are recognizing their weakness (finally) and doing something about it (finally times three). Maybe they’ll actually have a decent draft this year? We can only hope…
He is a really big guy, but..
..can he block?
ans 15 pounds as a baby? I Think his mom never were the same again..

He'd crumble the Williams' Wall
Imagine him being inside, paving the way for Forte and Taylor?
"He's a great candidate," Ryan said. "If I hadn't made him drop in coverage so often on running backs, he might be the all-time sack leader. They call it zone blitzing nowadays. We called it, 'Richard, pick him up.'" - Buddy Ryan on Richard Dent's HOF chances.
He was probably the biggest guy in this entire draft
And we’ve been needing to add some beef to our line. We can’t knock anyone off the LOS in short yardage. Excellent pickup! Now… cut Todd Collins and ad Johnson to the roster.

If he's so good
why was he available? Regardless, his profile seems fitting for Tice.

Da Bears Added A Guard? Does this Mean
they no longer have confidence in Garza or Chris “10 Yard” Williams?
Chris can still play LG
He moves really well, and if he can get a little more size and strength, I think he can sit at LG for a good time. Pulls like Garza did a few years ago, has good agility, just isn’t the biggest honkin mauler type that we need sometimes…
Five foot three seems to thrive on his misery...

I'm assuming he's next year's replacement for Garza
Would give us a HUGE right side of the line if Webb improves enough to keep the RT position.

The undrafted rookie free agent from Nebraska appeared in two games as a reserve, registering one tackle.

Missing the sentence before that
The Bears created a roster spot for Johnson by waiving defensive end Barry Turner
Turner had the tackle.

Seems like Buggs never got signed and now he got signed to replace Hillenmyer

Sweet, I picked this guy up as a Free Agent in Madden 10'. Made it to multiple Pro Bowls...
I’m not sure how that helps us though.
herman johnson
Nice move here. Remember reading in the draft guide about him and wondering why we didn’t take him then. Need major help here, this area should be addressed in the draft, hopefully rounds 1-3.
