The Inside Scoop: A Live Chat with Bears Insider John 'Moon' Mullin
Windy City Gridiron has the great pleasure of being joined once again by veteran Bears beat writer John 'Moon' Mullin. As you all know, Moon covers the Bears for CSNChicago, as well as writes his blog View From the Moon.
It's been a while, but Moon has been having to write extra articles since the Bears have been so solid lately.
Having a veteran on board to speak with our members is a real treat, as we get to ask anything we want, and not have to speculate on a lot of things that normally we wouldn't have access to.
A huge Windy City Gridiron "thank you" to Moon for taking time to join us!
Moon will join us in-thread around 4pm CT, so go ahead and get your questions and comments rolling in!

my question for moon
How did you not go forearm shiver Kaplan “on his nameplate” the other day on CTL when he kept yelling at you that it wasn’t a viscious hit by Suh?
Jim –
We have a good time, and I think very, very highly of Kap. He’s just a little pigskin-challenged at times, as the NFL revealed with its $15,000 fine of the Big Fella

? vs Patriots
Do the Bears open it up a bit and exploit the 28th ranked passing defense?
or
Stay the course and repeat the game plan used over the last four games?

31st ranked (yards allowed) my mistake

Martz and Cutler are always ALWAYS thinking deep even when they can’t get time to go there. To game plan against that, however, is seriously dangerous. You saw what happened to the Jets and Sanchez, and one thing about Belichick: he knows how to defense ‘traditional’ Martz – so Martz opening up to start with is flawed and may play right into Belichick, who’s won his last 4 vs MM

Other than a Tonya Harding style knee clubbing...
What is the key for the Bears to stop Tom Brady in Sunday’s matchup???
Unreasonable people make life difficult...
My ploy would be to demand the NFL move it back to a noon game
and don’t tell the Pats

Packers are the best in the NFC North
I read your blog which took me over to Peter King’s blog. End result: I ended up watching the ever-so-entertaining gag-a-thon by Andrew Perloff.
Why are the Packers el numero uno (according to Perloff)
- “They have that explosiveness on offense” (is he describing the Pack or the Chargers?)
- “The Bears were in a close game against the Lions and there offense is playing better” (Oct 3rd GB vs Det score 28-26…hmm)
- “When it gets cold and they (GB) need to run the ball, I’m just not sure they can do it” (Huh? Wha?)
Mr Mullin, what is with the media’s perception of our beloved Bears?

Scar tissue from three staight 16-game seasons (translation: ‘no playoffs’) – and if you know Chicago, you know there’s always the cliff just off to your right – and that low-hanging cloud over downtown is in fact the sky falling

The Danieal Manning contract situation was well-documented this past May,
and Danieal reluctantly signed his one-year tender after the Bears wouldn’t budge on his pay. Manning, of course, says he wants to stay in Chicago, but I’m sure that’s likely to just be diplomatic posturing on his end.
Do you see Manning and the Bears getting on the same page after this season, or do you think he’ll walk?
he does in fact want to stay, has moved his family here – I talked with his agent just last night, as a matter of fact, and a little surprisingly, no chats have happened yet – he has learned that this really is a business but he’s personally not cynical, so if he can stay, he will – and I wouldn’t dismiss a small hometown discount as a possibility – he loves the guys he playswith

Dave Toub's name has been thrown around for a while now
as a potential ead Coach in the league one day. Andy Reid went on record a few months ago and said he thought Toub would make a great HC…
We don’t really know much about him; 1- What does Toub bring to the table as a coach, and 2- How long do you think it will be before he gets a shot running a ball club?
good question about a very good coach – one thing that has his stock high around the NFL is that he works well with players from both sides of the ball, in coverage as well as kicking – the one thing that works against him is the stigma of an ST coach not being a full coach – even though Ditka certainly was a good pick from a special teams coach

I know you probably get tired of this but do you know what the deal is with Dez Clark?
He’s barely been seen this season.
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
I remain a pessimistically hopeful Bears fan.
he’s the best all-around TE on this roster – probably no argument even from some of the coaches – but 82 is a better receiver; Davis is better on special teams; and 86 is a better run blocker (and now has a winning TD catch) – there is also the $$ lavished on 86 in addition to Martz simply being very, very comfortable with 86 – and not many teams will go active with 4 TE’s on game days
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions
Considering that we don't have a FB, and that the TE is basically our FB...
IMO, that’s a weird decision…
I believe he's in the last year of his contract.
I would guess that he will only be active again if one of the others is injured. I’m willing to bet he’s done in Chicago.

Do you think that there will be any sort of resolution
between the team and the city anytime soon about the playing surface at Soldier Field? It seems like this should not be an issue the way it has been for years and years.
and will be for years and years, given that anythuing political in chicago moves with the speed of a glacier – it was artificial once upon a time – it probably will be again but exactly when…..
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:20 PM CST up reply actions
Worst case scenario...
If the Bears go 0-4 down the stretch and miss the playoffs, does Lovie lose his job?
For the record, I am not hoping this happens!
Just to piggy back off your question
If the Bears go 10 – 6 or 11 – 5 and miss the playoffs will Lovie Smith lose his job?
Boo all you want but you know what….Deep down you know I am right!
- Mike Martz on how the feels about the fans
no – part of the problem for you is that all four of the opponents are good now (with Frazier in Minn) – they could play reasonably well and take gas – but he’s owed $5.5 M and I do not see him gone in 2011, although you’re not going to see an extension

Mr Mullin
With the recent signing of OL Johnson are the Bears worried about JaMarcus Webb at RT? Are the Bears looking to make a change at RT?

if there was an immediate change, it woujld be to Shaffer – although Webb has not continued to progress

Herman Johnson
Will he have any role on the team this year? And if not, what will his role be down the road?
Chicago fan stuck in Florida.
Cubs, Bears, Bulls. RIP Santo
New England offense
What potential weaknesses do you see there, other than the obvious (lack of big-play receivers)?
I don’t see that even remotely as a weakness of the NE offense. 19 of Brady’s TD passes this year have been 10 yards or shorter – he doesn’t need a machete; a scalpel is doing just fine – and if they felt they needed a ‘big-play receiver’ (whatever that is, Wes Welker), they’d still have the tall kid who’s now messing up somewhere else, like Tennessee

What happened with the Jets?
Were the Patriots that good? Were the Jets that bad? Was it a combination of both?
The Jets defense seemed to be obviously missing Leonhard, as their play was drastically more inconsistent than it has been through the year. Was that the kind of loss that signals the beginning of a dramatic downturn, do you think?
More importantly, can the Bears learn anything from that game to help them out against the Jets in two weeks?
If I did what I love for a living, what would I do in my free time?
Writer at windycitygridiron.com {-/-} http://www.twitter.com/kdoggers
I was asked last week which I thought was the NFL’s best team. I said New England then, and had to endure screeching about San Diego – no, the Patriots are THAT good – they average 31 points a game, and I think they have scored 30-plus in what, four in a row?
and the Jets are extremely difficult to typecast – they were miserable against the Packers (9-0) and Detroit, and they were hit with a couple roundhouse rights to the mouth early and never came back from a standing-eight-count

Containing Pats Offense
How do you see us dealing with the Patriots short passing game. During the Jets game they were taking advantage of their deep corners and going with a lot of 3-step drops underneath. Do you see our corners trying to do a lot of “bump and runs” with their receiver to stop the underneath routes? Unfortunately I don’t see this as Tim Jennings forte, would we see some playing time for Bowman?
by Captain Kangaroo on Dec 8, 2010 2:21 PM CST reply actions
Actually, I do see this as a better situation for Jennings, who is quicker than Bowman, if lacking in the size that Bowman has – what Lovie has told me is that they play cover-2 less than a third of the time, and they are very comfortable with man schemes with Tillman – but in simple answer to your question, press coverage and Julius Peppers/Israel Idonije forcing Brady to step up into Tommie Harris (remember him?) is the only real answer – no pressure, no chance
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:33 PM CST up reply actions
pats offense
Do you think time of possession will be a key to winning this game?
no – what you do with the ball is always the huge factor – keeping brady off the field is obviously a nice thing but the Bears only had the ball 28 minutes vs. Phila and rang up 31 points
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:35 PM CST up reply actions
Charles Tillman...
What is your take on his play this season, and league wide how is he perceived?
If you go in the bathroom, turn off the lights, and say "Da Coach" 5 times while facing the mirror... Ditka will appear and slap the wussy right out of you.
by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Dec 8, 2010 2:46 PM CST reply actions
that’s difficult to thoroughly assess – the reality is that Tillman is not nearly the CB he was 3-4 years ago but to me he is a solid No. 2 corner and at 6’ is truly valuable in absolutely any scheme – his INT number (3) is respectable if not great
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:37 PM CST up reply actions
That settles it
“solid #2”, “truly valuable”, “respectable”…
I’ll take it.

Jennings / Bowman
Jennings has really impressed me all season long coming on and tackling hard and playing hard. My question is Bowman has been pretty much invisible this year. I saw him on Special Teams but was wondering has the coaching staff pretty much lost confidence in his starting CB position and is he pretty much a Special Team contributer for the forseable future?
yes – they will never completely give up on a 6’ corner but Bowman’s history of injury is now a concern and committing to him as a starter again for a season is very unlikely
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:38 PM CST up reply actions
Despite what the perceptions are,
it is nearly impossible to imagine a lockout next year. You’ve been around the league for a long time… what are your thoughts on whether there will be football next year?
hard question – the $ pie is so big that it is beyond stupid for this to go dark for ’011 – what I do know from insiders is that ownership is more unified than people realize, despite market-size disparities – and players have the limited shelf life, so even if there is a severe speed bump through june-july even, I do not see the players holding the line to the point of a lost season

ESPN Chicago is reporting that Pisa, Roach and Chester Taylor did not practice today. Do you think those guys will play Sunday?

no, yes, yes – and I think it’s in the injury report that’s published, as far as who’s reporting what

D.J. Moore?
How impressed have you been with him this year? Even though he’s listed at 5’9 can you see him being our number one or two corner next year?
WILDCARD BITCHES!!! YEEEEHHHAAAAA!!!!!
I think he has been superb as the nickel back this season, with as good an all-around game as any of the corners – the question with DJ is pure speed, though, and it is unclear yet if he can match up against faster wideouts for whole games – but he will be a starting CB for a long time in his role
by John 'Moon' Mullin on Dec 8, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions
We know their philosophies are the same,
but what is the biggest difference in Rod Marinelli’s defensive playcalling this season versus the way Lovie used to call it?
none – the real difference is focus, and Marinelli has that – if anything, Rod is a stronger believer in letting the front four alone to deliver pressure, but this year’s defensive line overall is stronger than what Lovie had
