WHATS IN A NUMBER ?

players jersy numbers

Star-divide

I am talking about a player"s jersey number. What if we drafted or acquired a player that wanted to wear a number that has been retired by the bears ?. for example the number 34. He has worn this number since high school, through college and wants to wear it for the pro"s. As far as the Chicago Bears Organization are concerned, this number is retired.

Here is a list of numbers retired by the bears (apologies if i have missed any)

3  ret for Nagurski

5  ret for McAfee

7 ret for Halas

28 ret for Galimore

34  ret for Payton

40 ret for Sayers

41 ret forPiccolo

42 ret for Luckman

51 ret for Butkus

56 ret for Hewitt

61 ret for George

66 ret for Turner

77 ret for Grange

So how does a new player get round to wearing the number of choice? Would he reject playing for the team? Or would he move up or down a digit ? Or  hope the franchise refresh the number, while he is a player for them?(Please let me know what fans think).

Should we have a ring of honour, like other franchises?Or stick to retiring numbers, whatever the consequences? We could end up having an a or b system,ie 34a, or 40b.

Please let me know what you think, is retiring numbers a good idea or do the bears have something in place to satisfy players who want to wear their favorite number?

I believe

The Bears have the most retired #’s in the NFL

I like the idea of a ring of honor, but do you then unretire all the numbers? Or just a few, and how do you justify unretireing some and not all?

  1. should be retired – best football player ever
  2. should be retired – best MLB ever

I think having #41 in play would bring more notieroity to Piccolo and cancer research.

I guess when you've

been around that long you’re going to end up with a few retired numbers but they’ve kind of gone overboard with it. I would think that a former player might be honored to have another player wear “his” number, you know like JC honors KB :)

But no way does anyone wear 34 or 51 and maybe 3, 7 or 77.

seriously?

Papa Bear Halas.. you know the GSH on the sleeves of the Jerseys….no..that number should be kept as retired and forever retired. I cant imagine some player given 7 without even have stepped on a field and deserve the rights to get that number…just imagine if grossman was given that number. I hope they retire 54 possibly 55 when Urlacher/Briggs retire..they are a great combo and have really played the best on the team this last decade. If Hester becomes more of a beast then i say retire his number as well but i dont see that happening anytime soon.

Guess

I should have said “34 or 51 OR maybe 3, 7 or 77” or possibly “34 AND 51 AND 7…”

To clarify, IMO Papa’s number 7 is appropriately retired, and I concur, as are 34, 51, 3 and 77.

54, outside possibility.

55, probably not a shot.

I think they should stay retired

and the person coming in should change their number. To make a long answer short. lol

I'll pass on the 34a...

34b or better, says I.
40b is a bit out of proportion.

I like 32B. A 34A would scare me.

34

if someone thinks they deserve to wear the number 34 then i say give them 43 until they prove they can get into 34, we cant have any 1 or 2 year bust come in here and soil the number of one of our greats

I think I'd be pissed.

If someone came in here and was great enough to finally “earn” 34, I’d probably have already gotten their other jersey, then I’d be pissed that I had to get both.

if they revise this list

there’s really only 3-5 #‘s that to me seem like they are really revered by both the org. and fans and therefore should never be used again. 34, 7 and maybe 77 are my choices. didn’t a lb, jim morrisey i think, wear 51 during the super bowl era for the bears? wore it with butkus’ blessing? maybe 42 should stay retired too since as we all know this # is the answer for life, the universe and everything,

unretiring 41 would be a good move as per wilt’s idea.
