How much to spend on Antrel Rolle?
Rotoworld reports that the Arizona Cardinals might cut Antrel Rolle to save a $4 million roster bonus. The link is below the fold.
http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&hl=167905&id=3149
How big a contract will Rolle earn this offseason? He's better than any of the safeties currently on the Bears roster. This will allow for the Bears to focus more on the offensive line during the draft. This could be interesting if Melton and Gilbert can shore up the defensive line rotation.

Shouldn't you know
at least something about a guy who you think the Bears should sign up quick? He is definitely an upgrade when it comes to the pathetic group we try to have play FS, not to mention he has a good streak of staying healthy. I’d support the move at the right price. The Cardinals secondary minus Rodgers-Cromartie isn’t by any means stellar not to mention the embarrassment they received from the Pack and Saints in the post season but he could work out in Chicago. He would be introduced into the Tampa-2 for the first time going from a 3-4 scheme as well.

Thanks for the post,
If Arizona lets him go I think that we should jump on him. Rolle has to have more up side than any FS that could hit Unrestricted Free Agency. He is young and already proven that he can be a play-maker in the NFL. He is still going to get better.
Don’t know how he stands injury wise, but he seems to have played in all the games over the past four years except for one. Get it done Jerry!
I'm just a .......
……….little unsure of him . He looks stellar at times and lost at others . One thing though he is a true FS . His time at corner helped him in coverage and his zone skills are solid . Money is one issue and him on film may be another . If push comes to shove I say make a run at him if he wants too much cash let someone pay him .
by MidWayMonster54 on Feb 21, 2010 10:33 PM CST reply actions
I would pay him a nice contract
When he touches the ball he scores. Hes a ball hawk he came into the league as a cornerback so he has decent coverage skills and he is probaly the only safety we can actually sign.
Sign Kampan. Rolle and Robinson along with the return of Urlacher someone smell that i beleive thats a recipe for a solid defense!

Better than lost all of the time..
" We get off the bus running! What do you mean we are a passing team? you don't agree with how I do things? You're fired!"
- Lovie Smith-
Whoa!
Someone somewhere keeps giving us chances to improve. This would be a great signing. A solid FS. 27 years old. Good coverage skills, and an OK tackler. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, JA. Call him as soon as he is released, and sign him.
My guess is that we will show interest and he’ll just sign elsewhere. Here we come, 6th round SS pick that we’ll draft to play FS!
Lovie would say no...
Because Rolle’s not a Tampa 2 safety. And thus… we’ll be looking for a safety again in 2011, for the 5th year in a row.
"You win because of the quarterback. We have to get that position stabilized. We're fixated on that." -- Jerry Angelo (12.30.2008)
Jerry Angelo trades for Jay Cutler! (4.2.2009)
.
I don't know much about Rolle,
But as far as the cover 2:
“The free safety will be called upon to do one of two things in certain situations, either blitz the quarterback, requiring him to have the skills necessary to beat a blocking halfback or fullback, or to assume the coverage zone left by a blitzing cornerback.” -Wikipedia description of Cover 2.
From what I’ve read about him, he’s definitely a playmaker with great range. Unlike our experiments at the position, his transition from CB seems to have been a success. He was a probowler this year, to boot. Even if he ends up just a solid starter, that is a huge upgrade from what we have now. He may be expensive, but a 27 year old ball-hawking safety sounds like a good investment to me, even if we do have to pay a little bit of a premium.
Let’s face it, we won’t be getting Peppers. This and/or Kampman would be a big upgrade to one of our biggest needs. Add that to the fact that contracts for safeties are some of the most cost-effective, and this could be a nice signing.
I haven’t done my homework on him so I’m not sold yet, but it is definitely worth looking into. Keep in mind that the Cards are looking to resign him after they dodge his roster bonus, and the Fins are rumored to be in the hunt to sign him as well.
The Fins signed FS Gibril Wilson last off season to a 5 year deal. Why would they want to spend $20+ million on a 2nd FS.
by boondock_saint812 on Feb 22, 2010 9:09 AM CST up reply actions
After I posted that I read that the Fins were not happy with Wilson’s play this past year and Rolle has said he’s like to play in Miami. I just don’t see Miami investing around $50 mil or 2 players at the same position.

Actually, Danieal Manning was the best of all of our pathetic attempts at FS last year.......
Bullocks played in three games, defended exactly 0 passes, intercepted exactly zero passes and contributed all of 14 tackles. In other words, he did diddely squat. Manning actually rated fairly well (given that it’s his natural position, it’s not that big of a surprise. The guy could have been great if Smith hadn’t gotten the bright idea that Manning should play 3 positions.

He was drafted after Steve Smith torched us in the 06 playoffs because manning has very good speed. Had he been left at Free Safety since his arrival i beleive he would have been solid.
When Rolle hits the Market we need to go after him HARD signing him allows us to draft a Grunt at guard and focus on other positions

The Cardinals were ranked 23rd in pass defense last year.
Any off-loads from that direction should be vetted very carefully. We need to know the guy coming in at FS is a stud – we have enough question marks over all of our safeties.

Over-rated.....
Rolle ranked 67th in the league overall, 2 spots ahead of Payne, and 4 spots ahead of Afalava. Sounds like spending a lot of money on a minimal upgrade. Both rated higher than Rolle in coverage, but Rolle rated higher against the run and blitzing.

I didn't say he's the best in the league. I'm saying that with the year he
had, to only end up being ranked 14th among safeties? It sounds fishy. And based on the rankings DM is better than guys like Bethea and in the same league as Atogwe?
C’mon, these rankings are off. They say it themselves that they are not scouts. Maybe I’m wrong, I haven’t done any kind of analysis myself on the numbers. I don’t see their justifications posted anywhere on their site.
But if you had the chance to trade DM straight up for Bethea or Atogwe, you wouldn’t take that in a heartbeat? That alone has to tell you these numbers are bunk.
I agree....
There is definitely no perfect system of rating. Especially where defense is concerned, as it doesn’t into account the fact that say, the Saints had much more pressure on the qb than the Bears, causing more hurried throws and more INTs. Or that Tillman, for example, has to cover a WR for about 2-3 more seconds than Darryl Revis, resulting in more completions in his zone. Or the fact that QBs are less likely to throw into Champ Bailey’s zone than Charles Tillman’s, resulting inless passes defended.
But I do think Sharper was WAY over-rated this season (though I do think he is good, don’t get me wrong) and I think that guys who play for a secondary on a team with minimal pass rush get the shaft in most systems, but not so much in this one.
I know everyone is very down on our safeties, and for good reason. But I honestly believe that if the Bears would stick with Manning at FS, and let him develop one role, he would be more than serviceable. Not that I would turn down Sharper. But I don’t think Rolle is worth the price tag. He wasn’t even one of the two best safeties on his team, which is why the Cards aren’t willing to pay the roster bonus even when the league is short on good free safeties.

And, NO to Bathea.
I probably wouldn’t trade Manning for either. Bathea is a better coverage guy, but not by much, and Manning is better against the run.
Atogwe is definitely a better safety. His numbers are more indicative of the fact that he played through injuries at the beginning of the season, was listed onthe injury report for most of the year, and then sustained a shoulder injury against the Bears in the first half of their week 13 meeting that required surgury. I wouldn’t count his sub-par (for him anyways) season against him. I’d trade for/sign him in a heart beat.

You really wouldn't trade Manning for a guy (Bethea)
who has performed really well in a Cover-2 defense?
If you are going to overpay for a player, which is what often happens in free agency, then you might as well do it for a safety, who will eat up less money overall. They are one of the lower paid positions on average. It’s true, the Cards are cutting him because of his backloaded contract. But they are trying hard to resign him also. Don’t forget that the Cards have one a reputation of being cheap.
I never said Sharper was the best in the NFL. But he is way better than anything we have on the roster. In fact, one of the reasons why I hate him so much is because of how good he’s been on GB and Minny. Rolle is also better than what we have. We need a FS that excels in coverage.
I’m OK with your belief that DM has potential. But I am not OK with any rating system that puts him in the same league with or above the guys I’ve mentioned.
We’re going to have to agree to disagree about this. I will not be convinced that DM is that good, or that the rankings you mentioned are worth a darn. Just as I’m sure you have faith in them and see a diamond in the rough in DM.
I still think we should pick up Rolle, the pro bowl alternate and 2 year starter at FS.
hold up.....
If I came across as accusing you as having said Sharper was the best in the league, then my bad. Guess I didn’t get my point across well enough. I was making a generalized statement, not attaching that statement to you. I apologize if it read that way….
As far as Bethea goes, I wouldn’t trade for him because I don’t want him. I find him lacking, and I have no use for bringing in more FAs that will fall short of expectations. Bethea has a reputation for missing tackles, as well, and missed double digit tackles this season. Bethea’s perception gets a boost from a great D-Line that gets constant pressure. Having watched a lot of Colt games here in Indiana, I am not sold on the idea that Bethea would perform any better than our current safeties given the pass rush situation here. I’m not saying an upgrade wouldn’t be great. I’m just no so sure that Bethea is an upgrade. It’s not a case of how good our safeties are, but of how over-rated I think Bethea is. Not that it matters. It’s all academic. Bethea is a RFA.
I do understand your aversion to the rankings. Unfortunately, the standard setting is for players who get 25% of defensive snaps, which is ridiculous, considering the small sample size and it’s swaying of the stats. I generally adjust to 50%, which usually leaves you with starters, and a better gauge. Having fill ins in the list leaves a lot to be desired. I can agree with that.
I also understand your assessment of AZ, though I can find nothing that indicates they are trying “hard”. I do get that AZ is about as cheap as CHI. I lived in Phoenix for a few years, and it’s a regular water cooler conversation there. But, again, the Cards must feel that they will be OK without him if they don’t want to fix the deal, especially in the currently FS shallow league. And let’s face it. If the Cards felt he was worth it, they would offer him a new deal that equals whatever Miami or we would give him, and save themselves the trouble. Everything I have read says Rolle wants to remain a Cardinal, but it’s all about the money. If he wants to stay in AZ, then all the cards would have to do is offer him a contract that is similar to whatever he would get in FA. Rolle then loses nothing in comparison to being cut, and the Cards keep him. I take from that that they don’t feel he is worth the money.
I’d rather see Sharper pursued. But to be honest, it’s not like I’d have fits if they signed Rolle. He’s not a bad safety. He’s just not my first choice, but I don’t think he would hurt our team, either.

And more to the point.....
I don’t think any safety is going to be particularly successful here until the defensive line gets fixed. If you give an NFL caliber QB and NFL caliber WRs 7 or 8 seconds per pass play, they are going to make the secondary look bad even if you have Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, Darrelle Revis and Champ Bailey filling out your secondary.

Agreed that the DL is more important than the secondary. I never said this should be done at the expense of fixing the DL. If that’s the case, then I’d rather get line help.
As far as team finances are concerned, we as bears fans should know better than to think a team will follow a certain course of logic. I’m not going to assume that the Cards would just eat the backloaded contract of Rolle’s if he was worth it, especially considering the way they’ve handled Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Dansby in their contracts. The fact that they are trying to resign him shows they do value him.
But again, how do you not see the value in acquiring a player who:
-Started for his (playoff) team for the past 2 seasons.
-Is generally regarded as a good player by the league (Rolle is a probowler).
-Would immediately fill a void we’ve had for years as a legitimate starter.
Again, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. I want Rolle. He is better than anything we currently have on the roster. DM included.
correction.....
I didn’t say I’d have a problem with signing Rolle. I actually said I’d have no problems with beinging in Rolle. I just stated that he’s over rated and that I’d rather have Sharper. I know he’s older, and will be effectively a band-aid. But he’s better for the now, and gives us time to get someone who is better for later. But if Rolle is the guy they bring in, I’m cool with that, too. I just think some people here will be getting less than they think they will.
I think we agree, for the most part. No agreeing to disagree necessary :)

I’d have to agree with you. I was just pointing out that D. Manning has been ok, and especially misused and mismanaged by Lovie.
And, in Lovie’s Cover 2 system — outside of the Mike Backer — the safety play is monumental to the success of the defense.
Positions in the cover-2 order of importance-
1. 3 technique- Tommie Harris
2. DE
3. Mike
4. FS
I understand they need a FS badly, but he’s got it a bit mixed up here.

I have to question the methodology of any ranking that places
Daniel Manning at 36 among all safeties and OJ Atogwe at only 31. And with the year Darren Sharper had he places at 14?
I’m sorry, this does not sound correct. Also there doesn’t seem to be a distinction between FS and SS, despite their different roles.
We’ll have to do a better analysis if JA does show any interest in him.
Here’s Rolle’s 2009 stats compared to the 2 Bears you mentioned along with Manning. Stats from NFL.com.

I think
we’d all be estatic about drafting him, but JA will pass on him because he’ll see the potential of an unheralded, small-school DE.

You know...
…I have read the scouting reports and watched him play a little, but i just think Kam projects as more of a SS than FS. Where as Rolle coming out projected more as a CB in our Def. That is why i would rather see the bears go after Rolle. Most of the time it seems we bring in our SS as the 8th man in the box. Now i due think Kam would be an upgrade to Afalava.
Also i would rather see the bears spend money on Rolle than Peppers.
i agree
id rather get Rolle and Kampman then peppers

Rolle
He’ll probably want the kind of money Gibril Wilson got last year (5ys-27 mil). I’d be up for spending that on a good FS.

If there is ONE move that the Bears should make that really shouldnt be adressed in the draft, its Free Safety.
Too much of a revolving door last year at either safety spot, for that reason alone its a MUST move. That will do 2 things, it will make our SS better because you will have 3 or 4 guys fightin for that spot and Daniel Manning can move back to Nickel where he belongs.
"How sad, another victim of the Night Nurses from Jersey."
Exactly
This is not the year to be playing witrh 3rd round and higher draft projects. We can solve two big problems with 2 signings. J. Peppers and Rolle. I know there is no way to know whether or not Peppers will dissapear with a payday he deserves but all he has shown to be was a constant professional on and off the field. He wanted out of Carolina and didn’t complain when they franchised him, or refused to talk with him about his contract. The guy still played hard every game regardless of all that. We need to make a serious move on this guy, but sadly he’s going to bring Albert Haynesworth type talk in the equation with other teams and i am almost positive that will take us out of contention right there but….you never know.
kinda funny how i manage to squeeze in Peppers name into any post these days
And that was meant as a reply to Anytime09’s post above.

I think I'd take
a look at George Wilson. If he gets the third round tender from Buffalo, the Bears should sign him. They could easily make a poison pill contract that Buffalo couldn’t match, and would be cheaper than Rolle. He can play either safety spot, and has played in the cover 2 system through his career.
He fills a need, and we could potentially get a 3rd rounder back from one of our RFAs.
DEJESUS!!!
Excellent find on Wilson...
His stats are essentially equal to Rolle’s and he’s heavier…why not both in that case? Rolle and Wilson!
He can get a Touchdown any time he has the ball.
If Gould didn’t tackle him, he would have returned that blocked kick for a TD when the Bears played the Cardinals last year.
He is still getting used to being a Safety since it was his second year playing the position, but he can make plays and he is an upgrade over the current Safeties. But his huge contract is a problem that the owners won’t want to deal with, and Rosenhaus the scumbag is his agent.
