The Bears Den: February 23rd, 2010 Edition
Bears ink Peterman, Angulo to contracts - Two people with outside chances of doing anything. Ah, the sweet taste of transaction time.
Ten greatest Bears games of decade - The Bears picked what they feel are the ten greatest games of the decade. Three from before Lovie, and only two in the last 3 years.
LaDainian Tomlinson released by Chargers after 9 years - ESPN - Possible mentor? Tandem back? Old and Busted? You decide.
Source: Carolina Panthers won't put franchise tag on Julius Peppers - ESPN - This is a lot of peoples' current cure-all for the Bears D--but he'll be pricey!
I believe I heard a rumor somewhere that WCG is all up on the twitter nowadays.
5 Bears expected to be tendered as restricted free agents - chicagotribune.com - But ask yourself-were these guys going to get monster deals somewhere else?
Smith Taking Things Day by Day Through the Rehab Process - Lovie with Dr. Drew? No, no, Kevin Smith's of the Lions leg still doesn't work right.
Daily Herald | NFL Scouting Combine to feature familiar talent - Some local (to Chi) boys could make some splashes in the combine/draft.
Video | Ovechkin crushes Jagr, Malkin scores | NBC Olympics - Did you see this hit? I mean, really, maybe we should entice Ovechkin to come play safety.

Peppers
side note I live here in Charlotte and have been here since they opened the stadium. I was born and raised in Bear country so I will always be a Bear fan first.
If you read one of the comments about Julius after the read they pretty much hit the nail on the head. JP is very overrated. It’s his attitude. Anyone that complains about making a million a game is definitely not worth it. Plus, he didn’t really show up until the last few games. I admit that he could fit in well with another team, but I do not want him on our team. We have gone through enough players with that kind of “attitude”. I’ll just close with a comment from another post on WCG; “We need hungry players”, not over payed babies that spend a lot of plays on the bench.
On a personal note, that is what’s wrong with the NFL. Athletes like JP that whine and whine until they get paid a lot of money and then quit after they get it. 20 million can go along way.
First off..what no pops? Now I have to right click and open in new tab...
Too much work. Second, I saw Schefter tweet that some exec said he thought Peppers would be lucky to get 10mil/yr in this market so maybe the Bears would pay that much? But then again with the last few years of precedent (Housh comes to mind) of the Bears taking them selves out of the running by not even meeting or making an offer to them. Third, I think LT has something left in the tank, he was too good for such a period of time to be washed up. I think he can be a great complimentary back.

Ovechkin....
WOW……stunning hit.
But you can forget even the pipe dream of Ovy playing anywhere by WA. The guy has a $124 Million dollar contract with the Caps.
If we can’t hope for the Bears to sign Peppers because of a $10M yearly price tag, imagine the coronary that the front office would have just looking at Ovy’s current paycheck ;)

Earns pretty much every penny of it, too.

Bait and switch
Maybe that’s the angle!

LT = A better 2nd option than anything we currently have on the roster.
From the LT story link above:
Tomlinson, who turned 30 last summer, was injured early in the 2009 season and finished with 730 yards on 223 carries for an average of 3.3 yards per carry, all career lows.
He is better than Jones, our AP, Bell, and yes even Wolfe(sorry dahamsta).
why not bring him in for a 1-2 year bargain contract and let him tutor Forte and let him prove he still has gas in the tank…I’m sure that Martz can figure out how to get production out of him…
Unreasonable people make life difficult...
Because
he’s older, wants to go to an immediate contender, and doesn’t seem to have any interest in being anyone’s “mentor.”

The mentor role...
is better suited for the coaching staff, not the active roster. LT needs to go play for the Pats, like I expect him to.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!
i see
LT going to the saints. now that Bush is on his way out of NO

I was hoping that
the Bears/Vikings game last December would be in the top ten Bears’ games. It was an epic overtime ending!
"A lot of fans were drawn to me because they knew that whatever the score was, I was going to run as hard as I could on every play. You don't have that now, you have guys waiting for next week or even next year." - Walter Payton
I have had season tickets for 28 years
and my favorite game attended (outside of the super bowl playoffs) was that Bear Saints game. From the tailgate to the crowd inside the stadium, to the game itself, fantastic.
" We get off the bus running! What do you mean we are a passing team? you don't agree with how I do things? You're fired!"

Except I didn't make the cut for Both Super Bowls!
" We get off the bus running! What do you mean we are a passing team? you don't agree with how I do things? You're fired!"
- Lovie Smith-
i was at both games.
they were both unbelievable. so much emotion in miami, i shed a couple tears when the bears came out and the huge bears crowd roared, then with the fighter jets during the national anthem, then finally during the kickoff when Hester was taking it back. Just unbelievable. It was absolutley unreal, never felt anything like it. Sure, coulda sold the two tix for maybe a couple g’s, but damn, it was worth it.
Please, please, please
people stop bringing up the cost of Peppers when we discuss him.
1. The Bears raised ticket prices. Again.
2. They refused to buy out the current administration, even though everyone knows they need to go.
3. They haven’t had to pay a first or second round pick the last 2 years.
4. They haven’t spent big money on FAs outside the org.
5. There is no salary cap this year.
6. They can structure the contract such that it doesn’t hurt us, cap-wise, in the future
7. He is the best available option to fix the biggest current problem on the team.
8. It’s not our money.
DEJESUS!!!
all sound great, until.....
you get to the missing part of your list.
9 The Bears haven’t shelled out top FA dollars since FA was introduced. They didn’t make al those money saving moves you placed on your list because they wanted room for FA. They did all those thing because they are cheap and because they take the fans for granted. We’ll miss out on Peppers for the same reason.

Also considering that
they have a lot of things that they need to spend money on this year…and that money could buy a lot of different pieces.

I'm not saying the Bears
will sign Peppers or another expensive FA because of the above, rather that we shouldn’t worry about how much someone costs because the above. I hear a lot of people say, “Peppers is great and all, but he’s going to cost a lot”. Who cares how much he costs? It’s not our money, it’s the McCaskey’s money, and Lord knows they’ve been hanging on to it plenty long enough.
DEJESUS!!!
Um...
where do you think they get most of that money?

They get it from
us, they give it to themselves. That’s the problem. They should be reinvesting in the team (ie player acquisition), not hoarding it.
They take in plenty of money. Bears fans shouldn’t fret about how much Peppers wants. We’ve paid the team PLENTY of money. If the team needs him, the owners should make it happen. Especially this year.

Question
Is there a deadline for teams to tag players or tender RFA’s?
