Are the Bears Shopping Greg Olsen?
I sure hope not cause I've got his autograph on his rookie card. That aside there appears to be several things occurring that indicate the Bears may part ways with Olsen for possible draft picks. Or maybe its all a coincidence. You decide after the jump.
First there's Mike Martz flat out saying a tight end MUST block in his system."All tight ends, their first responsibility, they have to put their hand down on the line of scrimmage and be a successful blocker, and then they move to receiving," Martz said here.
We all know Olsen isn't known for his crushing blocks but he can improve so who knows, right?
Then in this article you have Jerry Angelo talking about how unlikely it is that the Bears would move up in the draft. But he makes this cryptic statement.
''A name was brought up to me [Thursday] night about a potential player who might not be a real good fit,'' Angelo said, presumably referring to Olsen. ''I know his name has been bantered around. Players look at themselves and how they fit."
Followed by this.
''If somebody makes a phone call to you, that's different. You're always going to listen to what somebody has to offer, and if you feel it's in your best interest, obviously, you'll do that.''
So we aren't actively pursuing a trade but we'll listen to any offers for "a potential player who might not be a real good fit." I know, I know, he could be talking about ANYONE on offense (given our current roster) at this point, but...
Lastly the Bears appear to be pursuing Manumaleuna, among other TE's according to this article. Don't we have enough depth there already?
So we need good blocking TE's and Olsen might not fit the bill, we'll listen to a trade offer for a player who might not fit in, and we're showing interest in pursuing free agent TE's. That pretty well sums it up.
So is Olsen on the trade block or is this just "stuff happens" in the NFL? What do you people think? Are we looking to trade Olsen? Is that a good move? If we do trade him what could we get? The Giants got a 2nd and a 5th for a (arguably) better talented, yet highly disgruntled Jeremy Shockey. Could Olsen garner a low 1st/high 2nd? Is rye better than Irish whiskey? Your thoughts?

NO DEAL
I don’t think we will see Olsen moved before the draft, specifically because the Bears will probably be looking for a higher price than other teams are willing to pay. Olsen isn’t disgruntled and still could play in this system, so they have no urgent need to deal him, and therefore will just sit and wait for somebody to knock their socks off (which nobody will).
Also, do we really want to deal him? I know he isn’t amazing at blocking, but are any of our tight ends? Dez Clark is as old as the crypt keeper, he won’t be around more than another year or two, and Kellen Davis certainly isn’t the answer. I don’t think they will be able to unload Greg, nor do I think they are actively pursuing a trade. I’ll actually be happier if he stays.
Honestly, I think we are all looking for the Bears to garner picks in the first two rounds so we have a better reason to tell our significant others to leave us alone while we watch it.
Come on now,
…so we have a better reason to tell our significant others to leave us alone while we watch it.

Why isn't Kellen Davis the answer >?
What’s wrong, specifically, with Kellen Davis ? Nobody has yet given an intelligent answer to that question. What’s wrong with Dez Clarke ? We picked up Angulo and are now trying to sign another TE …. clearly Olsen’s complete inability to block DISQUALIFIES him from Martz’ system – regardless of what Martz has said in the media.

"He's not known as a blocking tight end." ?
Where ? On Facebook ? He’s a sight better than Joke Olsen …..
by Irish Bears Fan on Mar 2, 2010 2:31 AM CST up reply actions
No the scouting report out of Michigan State
He’s improved since then, it’s not his strong suit… He may make a great block every so often, but he still plays too high from time to time…
From the WarRoomReport;
Weaknesses: …will need refinement in the area of pass and run blocking…
From FF Toolbox:
Davis shows good blocking ability; having the size, speed, and strength to take on defensive ends and blitzing linebackers. He will, however, have to work on his technique to block at the same level in the NFL.
From NFL Scout:
He is big and athletic, but still raw as both receiver and blocker.
From SBNation:
He is a big body… , but he’ll need work as a blocker.
To be fair, a few scouts did say he was an OK blocker at the college level, and he has improved in that area.
I think he can be molded into an above average blocker.

Why isnt he?
Cant block consistently….i dont care about the ONE youtube video you found.
Doesnt have the speed of an olsen that can burn Linebackers covering him, actually even safeties trying to cover him. ( see cardinals game)
Davis only has a mismatch in redzone because of his height where as Olsen can create that mismatch all over the field.
Greg Olsen has shown good progress over his first three years increasing in all three categoires(yards, catches and touchdowns) with out a true number wide out that Gates, Clark, Gonzales and Witten get to enjoy.

Trading Olsen makes sense
You deal from your strength… and TE is a position the Bears have some depth at. If they can bring in Manumaleuna to play TE/H-Back, then you can easily go with Des Clark and Kellen Davis along with him.
Olsen is one of the few tradeable players on the roster. He might get you into the 2nd round.
by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Mar 1, 2010 9:00 AM CST up reply actions
I agree
I like Olsen but he would be expendable if Manumaleuna is brought in. I think a 2nd is reasonable. I would target the Patriots because Ben Watson is a FA. They currently have 3 picks in the 2nd round (44, 47 and 53).

It is a possibility.
I thought the same exact thing when adding everything up, especially when I heard about their interest in Manumaleuna. I really think that also depends on who they pick up via FA. I wouldn’t give him up for anything less than an early second and a fifth, no way.

Oh, and that.....
might be the nost worthless piece of tape breakdown I have ever seen. Comparing Olsen protecting the ball (watch the tape and ignore Roy, it’s much easier to stomach) and getting the first to AP stiffarming (and losing the ball frequently) is ridiculous. And doing a weight comparison on a side tackle based on momentum is ridiculous and stupid. He needs to go back to a base physics class.
The second play, complaining about Olsen getting dragged out of bounds, again ignoring simple physics.
Comparing a RB to a TE is ridiculous in and of itself. A compact frame vs a stretched frame involves different physics. Simply put, why aren’t there any 6’5" running backs? Because Roy’s a dumb@ss!!!!

Force....
The force of a 200lb DB in a league that averages 4.56 in the 40 at the position can reach 1600 pounds, just to clear up why Roy is an idiot. Olsen, in the first clip, is not running straight on, but is off-balance as he is trying to change directions to head up the field and meet the DB. Olsen’s momentum is not directed that James, and was thus working against him during the tackle.
Simple physics beats crazy observation every time…….

I don't care either way...
I think Olsen is a great teammate and all around good guy to have on the team. However, he hasn’t lived up to the hype about him yet. I would hope the Bears get a player rather then a draft pick for Olsen. I wonder if Martz has plans to move him to an h-back or FB role to further exploit his match-up against slower LBs? It could be better for both the Bears and Olsen if he got a fresh start on a team that can better utilize his talents, but either way I maintain the Bears need to get more then just a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.

This post is one more indicator of what a cluster*&^% this whole organization is.
I’ve not been a big fan of Greg Olsen, but that aside, if you’re looking to trade one of the few 1st round picks you have starting for you to fit a system which, in all likelihood, will only be around for one season, that should tell everyone in the league and and anyone who follow this team what a bunch of morons we have running things.
I’d have no problem trading Olsen or anyone else if there was a real long-term plan in place to actually win a Super Bowl and it would improve your chances of getting there. Any of the moves that Lovie (and it’s my distinct impression that it is Lovie who is orchestrating everything) makes are out of desperation to just keep his job or blame the failure on someone else. Trade Olsen, and things don’t work out, it’s Martz’ fault. Don’t draft a safety who starts, it’s Jerry’s fault for crappy draft picks (they were so bad that even a coach as talented as Lovie couldn’t find one out of the 20+ combos he’s had to develop and obviously player development under Smith and his staff has never been an issue). Another questionable season by Cutler and Lovie never really wanted him, or Martz didn’t adjust his system to play to Jay’s strengths, or Tice couldn’t get anything out of our OLinemen. The defense, if they don’t improve, will definitely be because Marinelli was never a DC before, since there’s nothing wrong with Lovie’s system.
The most entertaining aspect of this season might well be watching “Teflon Lovie” do his thing. His new mantra for the 2010 season should probably be changed to “We get off the bus looking for people to throw under it.”
It's getting crowded under that bus isn't it?...
Maybe the Bears can invest in a new bus?
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!
no way does Olsen get traded
that would only piss off Cutler and I dont think they wanna do that.

This whole organiaztion...
needs to be fired. I am so sick of them trying to implement schemes they don’t have the personnel for. How many times are they going to get a round hole for a square peg before they realize that it just isn’t going to work? Sometimes you have to adjust your scheme to players strengths not just try to make them adapt and wonder why it isn’t working!
If they can get a 2nd and a 5th
Otherwise, they should just say no. Some contender team might be willing to deal two picks for a talented TE like Olsen. Just think, JA and LS can draft their annual project DE and SS (to play FS) for those picks!
"The country is full of good coaches. What it takes to win is a bunch of interested players." -Don Coryell, ex-San Diego Chargers Coach
if Angelovie trades up in the draft, they have to make up for Olsen's loss.
They’d have to draft a player that can make an impact his rookie season. REMEMBER! in order for this coaching and front office staff to survive, they have to make it into the playoffs. So no, they won’t be drafting a FS early unless they are in position to get Eric Berry. No way do I see them taking players that needs extra development(i.e., redshirted) this season.
same story like last year: I hope they draft a big body WR or a runningback that fits the scheme. They could target a Percy Harvin type rookie. Or they could do the unthinkable and draft inside linebacker(a very overlooked position this year), which would lead to numerous Fan Posts about trading Urlacher for Anquan Boldin.

right
but if it is only one year and we clean house next year we wont really have a good TE..it would depend on the next coaching staff but i really dont think we should trade away a player that is doing well and a favorite target for our franchise qb. same arguments can be made why DA should be a starter.
Bear down Chicago
I like Olsen
I think he has Pro Bowl potential… but if the Bears are looking to trade up he’s one of the few pieces they have that has any value. Trading him now makes sense.

Wouldn't you rather have a potential RT for the next 10 years
drafted in the second round than Olsen??
" We get off the bus running! What do you mean we are a passing team? you don't agree with how I do things? You're fired!"
- Lovie Smith-
I think
if the Bears can get a second round pick for Olsen they should jump on it. There isn’t a lot of value for a pass-catching TE in this offense (no matter what they say, Vernon Davis is every bit the receiver Olsen is and didn’t do squat), so if they can get value for him they should do it.
They other thing they could do is try to package Olsen for a RFA and a need position. Buffalo has a logjam at safety, so Donte Whitner or George Wilson could be targets as well.
DEJESUS!!!
no brainer
like most posts if they get a 2nd rounder or an impact need position filled i say pull the trigger and if they do go with manu i say " get er done"
So let me ....
….. get this strait we trade our young , good tight end for at most a second round pick ? Thats what the majority here is wanting right ? So what if we have an OK season but not enough to keep our current staff in place ( for all you Lovie haters ) and the 2011 we have a coaching staff in place that would use what Martz would not , a tight end with excellent ball skills and OK blocking , then what have we done ? We’ve traded away our best young asset on offense and our QB’s favorite target for what , an unproven rookie that may or may not help us .
And then who replaces Olsen ? Dez is on the downside of his career , Kellen Davis has made one good block in his two NFL seasons and is just not a good blocker at all or go with a Martz guy in Brandon Manumaleuna , a guy that is just a glorified guard playing tight end ? I am on record many times defending not trading Greg Olsen so why does this keep popping up ? Olsen could flourish if used correctly . All it takes is us not trading him for him to realize him full potential IN A BEARS UNI and not anothers teams colors .
So give me some reason to think trading Greg for an unproven rookie is a good idea ? Or trading him for another player even . This makes no sense to me so someone please clear this issue up for me and many others whom think the same as me .

Let me explain this..again
He was one of the only pieces that we have that is valuable to others. The team needs to be strengthened on both lines for us to advance us further and quicker to the playoffs. How do you intend to due this? You have to give up somthing to get something. The guy is not great..yet. So we are also trading potential for greater potential. We need offensive lineman and other weaknesses. We need a RT that could be had for the second round pick. Also, the drop off between him and a healthy DEZ/DAvis will be a drop off, but not a huge drop off. But we could have a major upgrade at another position of need as long we don’t draft “Dan Bazuin” again.
" We get off the bus running! What do you mean we are a passing team? you don't agree with how I do things? You're fired!"

olsen is over rated cant stretch to catch the ball and cant block!! also doesnt fit martzs system.. nothing personal just makes sense to trade him if indeed it comes up.. manu fits the martz prototype for his tight end..
How davis or clark fit it then?
Davis cant block except for that one time Irish saw back in highschool.
Clark CAN block but doesnt have the speed.
Olsen i think can flourish in this system if used correctly

I could be wrong,
but if they don’t trade him with the way things look, I could see them converting him to a WR. I want us to get Manumaleuna, dude is big enough to be another OL with the ability to move. Our RB’s would probably spend most of their time buying this guy dinner.

Right, I agree 100%.
I know the definition well and think you are right on spot. I would have never thought at the end of the season they would be shopping for more TE’s. I understand where IBF is coming from, but besides what he does well and what he doesn’t, the majority of Bears fans have him as one of their favorites…not me by any means. For where we drafted him, I had way more expectations for him. In the same breath, we could have a lot worse than him. I am like you, afraid JA might get a player that doesn’t even live up to Olsen. Now that would piss some people off, me included.
