Super Bowl XLIV Open Thread

Super-bowl-xliv-miami_jpg_medium

The 2009 NFL season comes to a close today, but this year's Super Bowl will undoubtedly garner as much, if not more, world-wide interest as any in recent memory.  The Saints started the year 13-0 under the guidance of Drew Brees, and the Colts began 14-0 with Peyton Manning at the helm.

Both teams had a top-5 passing offense in the NFL, while both being in the lower half in total defense ranking.  In other words, we are likely to have a shootout from start to finish today.

Star-divide

The game starts at 6:25pm ET, and will air on CBS.

Where will you be watching the game today, and how do you see this one playing out?

With the Bears Super Bowl loss to the Colts still fresh in my mind,

I might have to go with the Colts this year. This would make it 2 rings for Manning. 2 Peyton rings > 1 Favre ring. I’m not naive enough to think that ESPN would cease with their crush on Favre, but it would make me feel better. All matters in my life are dependent on my total hatred for Brett Favre.

Watch it with some freinds

and going with the saints to knock indy off. Hard to really hate the saints(unless were spanking them at the soilder!)
I see a few guys making plays that could change this game.

Vilma and Bush for the saints

Addai and Mathis

Those 4 for some reason have me feeling they could have an impactful play

Am I the only Bears fan...

That really wants to see the Saints win this year? I love watching the Bears knock the Saints out of the playoffs at every opportunity, but since we didn’t get a chance to this year, I’d like to see them win one while they can.

I root for the Saints when it doesn't affect the Bears...

I never really liked the Saints much growing up (they weren’t that good, and I never bought into the “you have to cheer for the team closest to where you live” mentality…

But, watching Sean Payton and Drew Brees turn that team around in the wake of the storm has been an awesome thing. As much of the soul of that city that was lost after Katrina, the Saints have been a rare breath of fresh air for New Orleans.

For today… Geaux Saints!

I'm in like Flynn

I was originally for the Colts because it could possibly portray the Bears in a better light, but the Saints story is too great to resist. I’m just going to pretend the Saints are actually the Bears and go from there. The only other thing that would make me want to root for the Colts is Reggie Bush. His back flip a few years ago in the NFC championship bothered a lot of people including me.

Think back.....

Bush taunted Urlacher on his way to the Saints final points in that game. I read a story where Briggs said that Brian came walking back and said “they don’t score again!”…….and the didn’t. I think Bush learned a lesson from that, though. I haven’t seen the same type of arrogance out of him. Seems like a decent kid who gets caught up in the moment sometimes.

the sb

I do not want the Saints to win- don’t want to hear “who dat?” ebonics that would be rampant if they win Katrina was terrible, but I don’t see the need for linkage as to whether or not the Saints win today. Though the NFL would dearly love to have the PR symbolism to work with if they did pull out a victory.

Bowlen/ Marshall "on the same page."

Linkification.

So, the owner wants BM back, but it looks like it will ultimately fall on McDaniels’ shoulders.

“Now, if the head coach sits down and says no, I want to trade him, or I’ve got a deal that’s going to be beneficial to the club, I don’t think I’m going to override him,” Bowlen said Saturday of Broncos coach Josh McDaniels

I say similar because.....

Randle spent most of his career as a DT, not a DE. They sit fairly even in history, comparatively. But I still stand by my point. Should have been Dent. I think the league considers the number of players Chicago has in the hall. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

I always love the speculation on QBs.....

Remember how Tim Couch was going to be the best thing since Dan Marino? And Cade McNown? And how Tom Brady wasn’t going to transition well into the NFL. Hell, Romo, Warner and Garcia weren’t even drafted. And Craig Krenzel was…….

Tebow might or might not transition. Jay Cutler’s biggest knock was his throwing mechanics coming out of Vandy. It was also the biggest knock on Grossman, so it works both ways. I just find all the speculation funny. It happens every year, and people are usually more often wrong than right, which would be why less than half the players drafted actually play more than one year, and why there are so many QB busts.

It’s his accuracy, long wind-up, and inability to read defenses or check-off his primary WR. Most guys have one or two deficiencies coming in the NFL, but this guy has every negative a QB can have coming out of college.

I honestly don't care.

We are watching one of, if not the, greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. Another Super Bowl win would only add to that legacy. On the other hand, it’s hard to root against the Saints and Drew (yumalicious) Brees.

I’m actually just glad that I’ll be watching a Super Bowl where I don’t hate one of, if not both of, the teams playing.

A rock station I used to listen to had a contest...

back in the day of what to put on Indiana’s license plates instead of Wonder Indiana. The only rule of the contest was that you had to use the title of a song by a group they played on that station. Needless to say, a song called Teenage Wasteland by the Who won the contest. Would have been funny stuff if they actually printed that, but they didn’t.

I'd like to offically announce...

I hate Janet Jackson for inflicting one terrible half time show after another on us. Seriously. Thanks so much, I love hearing The Who sounding like a Who cover band.

Is it too much to ask to get a contemporary artist that actually puts on a fantastic live show like Muse, or maybe even a more mainstream artist like Kanye “This is a great football game, but I think I’d make the best half time show ever” West, or Jay-Z, or whatever man. Just something that isn’t incredibly dated, and actually might entertain someone.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Judging from stories....

That followed, he dropped Conwell’s name becasue he wanted the press to interview Conwell on the subject. I found it funny that Conwell siad identical things about Martz and TE’s that Martz said in this interview. He also sort of covered for Martz on the lack of TE use by saying that Martz “expects a lot out of everyone on the offense, but mostly depends and trusts his quarterback to find the weakness and exploit it” while discussing Martz TE uses. It all felt very set up after reading the Conwell interview.

But I didn’t think they ran the full ad, just a thing telling you to go to some website to watch the whole thing.

Oh, and it’s the Super Bowl, almost no one runs the same ad more than once.

Lastly, not to start a politiwar, but the reason there was a uproar is more because CBS has previous denied any and all ads revolving around hot button issues for the Super Bowl. They basically made an exception this time when they have refused all other times.

I hope you guys didn't just see the "Green Police" commercial.

Awful.

I just think without the interception, if history has taught us anything, Manning takes the Colts downfield for the TD to tie it up. Never would have got there without Drew Brees though, so I think you are probably correct.

I was thinking of the short kickoff that cost us the game last season. You know, the one where we gave whomever we were playing a short field with 11 seconds to play and didn’t bother to defend the sideline 20 yards downfield.

Cost us a chance in the playoffs

That squib kick was horrible call, and it was even more suspect cause of the injuries in the secondary at the time. Can’t play a nickel or dime, so why give them a chance to win with one completion?

I disagree.....

Going for it, rather than taking the field goal left Manning and the Colts inside the 3 and rushing 3 straight before punting. it was a good move that did affect the game. I kept Manning off the field for most of the second quarter.
