Jacksonville set to release Holt
Thought this was interesting. According to the Florida Times-Union, The Jags are getting set to release wideout Torry Holt with two years remaining on his contract. Holt registered a career low in catches, yards and touchdowns during his first season with the Jaguars. If he is released, it might not be a bad idea for the Bears to pick him up. Torry was his most productive under Martz's system in St. Louis and he could really help our young group of receivers with digesting Martz's playbook and polishing their fundamentals.
I remember last year after we picked up Cutler a lot of people, including myself, were expressing a desire to have Holt join the Bears for a veteran presence and now that we have Martz our chances are better than ever. With Hester's desire to focus more on the return game it is removing our most veteran receiver into a less significant role, a veteran presence like Holt could be a smart addition. I think this is a move that is likely to happen and should. How do you feel about it?

I say ........
……..sign Holt . If nothing else he’ll provide a vetran presense and allow our WR’s to learn Martz’s more quickly . As for Tra Thomas not so sure about that one . Hes seems to be Pace’s equal at this point in their careers …..that being firmly on the downside of their carrers .

I wasn't calling for Thomas to be signed
just mentioning it because it is in the article.

Is Holt better than R Davis?...

I wasnt trying to be serious.
I just think it is funny how the Bears are trying to relive the Rams past. If Tory Holt is available, I would be completely for it. I am not to sure what he has left, but I do believe he would have a positive influence on this team and would be an ambassador for the Martz system. Cutler would also have a guy that he might be able to rely on in a lot of circumstances. Now I know that Holt is not who is he used to be, but there might be enough juice left in his bottle where he would be able to energize and educate these young Wideouts that the Bears have.
My mistake.
I agree with what you’ve said and feel the same way. Good response.

it would be a roll of the dice
…signing Holt to the Bears. Seems like things have not gone well when Lovie has pulls in former Rams players. Can you name one that did work out well for the Bears since Lovie took over?
"I am not an animal!" - Merrick
We're not asking Holt to be savior on grass here
we’re asking him to help polish our wideouts and be a good #2 option. He’s still a productive possession receiver. Holt has been vastly more successful than any other Ram that Lovie has added to our team. Only one of them have been on the offensive side of the ball and that has been Pace, who is just plain old and has had many injuries. I don’t think because he was a Ram has anything to do with whether or not he should be added to our team. If we want better results with our WRs in Martz’s system in the first year that it is being established then he would be a smart pickup.

You're kidding right ?
The guy is 57 and clearly done. No more of Lovie’s Ram friends from generation Bust …

Yeah I'm kidding.
Gotcha! haha! This whole post was just a joke, you’re a genius for catching on!
No it’s not a joke. If you want to take everything for face value, then continue to do so. It would be a great addition to our wide outs to have a veteran presence who knows Martz’s system and can help with our poor route running and basic fundamentals. We need a veteran in our midst. We don’t need to go crazy and spend an ass load of money on some so called “elite” wide out when we have so many other needs on this team on the defensive side of the ball and have a group of talented, young WRs.
Holt has been in the league for 10 years. He’s not 57. from 2000 to 2007 he had consistent 1,000 yard seasons on the F-ing Rams and came up a bit short in the 08 and 09 which can also be attributed to other emerging WRs and QB play. We’re talking about a guy who can help mold our wideouts and be a mentor and captain to them and the locker room. I don’t give a shit what other Rams have done on the Bears and Tinoisamoa won’t be considered a bust if he comes back and plays when healthy. If your basing this on that dinosaur Pace or Archuleta then you should know better. A team doesn’t make a player and Holt isn’t washed up.

I agree......
What’s the alternative? Are we going to go after Terrell Owens? He’s 36 and declining, and too pricey for Chicago. Antonio Bryant? No telling if he actually can be the same receiver he was before the knee injury. Everyone else will be a RFA unless the CBA can get done.
Holt will bring experience and knowledge of Martz system to Chicago. And he’s definitely still good enough to replace Davis in the lineup. Holt is in decline, true enough. But he’s got 2-3 years left in him, and would be a great price-talent value on a very young and inexperienced receiver group.

Holt is 33
and Holt playing at 36 doesn’t seem that far fetched. He’s not exactly the league Grandpa. Hell, two of the 5 top FA WR’s are older than Holt. Terrell Owens and Derrick Mason.

Playing on a really bad JAX team, He still caught 51 balls for 722 yards in 15 games with 12 starts. Doesn’t sound too bad fto me, especially considering he was in a new system and didn’t start out as a starter. Back in a familiar system, I think he’s got a couple of years left.

very strong arguement, however....
your list only consist of very few that are still legit #1 or #2 wideouts.
as for Holt I still say 1-2 years of, so so & therefore off the bench years left. His best skill was his route running which due to age and a bum knee, is not anywhere near what it use to be. I say grad him if he’s dirt cheap as he will help our young wrs and will give us a guy that should make several plays over the course of a 16 game season.
Rebut....
Your point assumes that I think Holt is an X or Y in our system. But if you look below, you’ll notice that I Slot him in as 4th on the depth chart. I think he becomes 1st reserve and mentors the rest of the corps. He’ll make clutch plays and provide the young WRs with a veteran presence that’s been there before and knows this system. I wouldn’t expect him to be our #1 or #2, even though he just came off a reasonable #2 season in JAX. I see him as a 35 to 45 catch receiver gaining 500 to 650 yards and serving as a playing coach.

saw it after the fact
yea I saw the lower post afterward. I agree with your “Rebut” assesment
I'd like it
He could be a 4th or 5th WR on the roster, and as long as we are at it, I’d like to see the Bears go get a QB with experience in the system to back up. Jon Kitna could come in and be #3 (or #2). An added voice that understands the system is always a good thing.

+1 on Kitna.....
His eggs are a bit scrambled, but then, weren’t McMahon’s? I’d like a backup with some experience so we don’t end up in a Hutch Krenzel position again. The front office never seems to learn some lessons, though…..

Sign him as a WR assistant coach
As a WR? No.
Yes, we have young WRs. Yes, they could use mentoring. No, they don’t need their playing time or practice reps reduced. Perfect solution, Holt as assistant coach. Second best solution, don’t sign him at all. We don’t need him taking up a live roster spot. So you may be correct and in the current “The past is now” mindset Holt will probably be signed.
it couldn't hurt
to at least give him a tryout. i agree with you up to that point at least. although a lindsey hunter-type player seems to work better in basketball than in football. i have no explanation really just seems that way to me.
the guy can still catch
and is def a threat. He played well for the Jags. I like this move. Plus i cant see him demanding too much $
Holt is someone defenses need to respect
I dont think hes done yet and with the wideouts we have he will have some support.
My concern is….who gets cut?
R Davis. Good ST player, but not worth as much as Holt.....

Holt?
What would it mean for our current group?
Hester – Returning?
DA, Bennett, Knox – Locks?
Davis, Iglesias – ST’s/ Gone?
Where would Holt fit (slot, maybe)? How many WR’s would we keep?

Think R Davis doesn't make the cut regardless of Holt....
Iglesias red-shirted like Bennett, and I saw him in camp last year. He impressed me. I think he’s going to be a pleasant surprise. Hester isn’t falling any farther than the slot, bank on it. Especially with Martz.
I see it this way.
X: Aromashadu
Y: Knox
Z: Hester
1st Reserve: Bennett.
2nd Reserve/ST Iglasias
Davis-Cut.
Holt would change the whole scenario, though. He then becomes 1st Reserve. I think the Bears bring in another wideout from somewhere, whether that be Holt or draft or some other free agent.
Davis has done a fine job on ST and has provided a few highlight catches over the years (Seattle, playoffs ‘06, for example) but I don’t think he’s done enough to warrant letting go of developing talent like Iglasias to keep him. Smart teams don’t let go of developmental players for players on the decline (Davis is 30 and will be 31 before the season starts) who can’t crack the starting lineup, especially when you are paying him nearly $1M bucks in 2010.

With the Martz offense
they might keep 7 WR’s on the roster

7 would not be a surprise
If they plan on using Olsen as a hybrid, TE/WR, then maybe you go with 6.

Possibly....
But I actually doubt it, considering Olsen is effectively a really big WR. But I wouldn’t be surprised, no.
I still think, at around $930,000, Davis will be too expensive to keep to bring up the rear on the depth chart, at least with what he brings to the table.

We should "Drop" Davis
Why not bring in a 6’4" rookie from Vanderbuilt, Abeline Christian, Directional Michigan or any other Div 1 school for league minimum.
Spend the money on a hungry young player who doesn’t have any bad habits like…say…dropping everything thrown in his direction…

exactly my point......
I like Rashied, but at this point, it makes more sense to bring in a project player in the later rounds or an undrafted FA who’s big and moldable.

Agree but one question i had..
Is i didn’t get a chance to see a Jaguars game all year. Not only that but I don’t recall any sportcenter highlights of Holt this past year, so my question is.
Those that had a chance to catch a Jaguars game on TV this year or seen a lil bit of Holt, what do you all think? Was he getting separation? Was he making the famous circus catches he is known for? Basically, does his play this past season make you comfortable if we were to pick him up?
by Chitownproduct on Feb 9, 2010 7:57 AM CST up reply actions
I saw a little....
He looked no better than average with good hands. He caught 51 balls for 722 yards. Interesting note……1st year of his career than he caught no TD passes. He did step it up when Sims-Walker went down to injury and produced a 100 yard game. He also averaged 14.2 yards per reception (19th in the AFC) but had definite separation problems and due to that caught less than 50% of the targets thrown his way. He also had 5 drops, which isn’t great. But I also saw him catch a couple of really tough balls that I don’t believe would have been caught by anyone currently on the Bears roster.

he was still
a NFL wideout, no dought, but you notice right away his quickness has subsided. Hands are still there as I saw he make couple of good/not great grabs. I saw we should take him if very cheap and give about 12-15 snaps a game.
50+ catches in 2009 & 14+ YPC
That and his familiarity with Martz’s system makes me comfortable. The Bears would not be signing him to be a #1 or even a #2, more likely he would be a 3rd or 4th WR.
