Cleveland Browns Release WR Donte Stallworth
I'm in favor of the Bears pursuing Stallworth. With talk of Hester going back to more of a returner's role on the team, Stallworth could be just the guy the Bears would sign. Granted, players with legal trouble have never lasted long on the Bears, but Stallworth has served his sentence and (seemingly) rehabilitated himself.Donte Stallworth will get the chance to resurrect his NFL career, but it won’t happen in Cleveland. The Browns released the troubled wide receiver on Monday, wasting little time after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Friday that Stallworth would be reinstated following the Super Bowl.
“I think he’s in a better place than he was,” Goodell said on Friday, adding that he met with Stallworth about a month ago. “I think he recognizes what he did and the horrific nature and the unfortunate outcome, and I think he’s prepared himself to get back in and play.”
However, the main factor that I think will pique the Bears interest is MONEY. He's a talented wideout who can be brought in for much less than the market value, based on talent. He needs a second chance and will get it... the question is if the Bears will make themselves the team that gives him that second chance.
I am all for it. We should be very pass-heavy this next year. Stallworth would be a great addition in Martz's system!
Are you for the notion of the Bears signing Stallworth, or against it?
Perhaps you can change my mind, or strengthen my opinion about it.

His contract probably won't be that small.
It may be smaller than some other peoples’, but there are plenty of other teams who will be willing to make the investment.

He's a lot of the same
as what the Bears already have at WR. Knox and Hester are both similar. If they go after a WR, it will be for a #1 type of potential with size. Think Malcolm Floyd.

I agree
Stallworth is a good player but his strengths are already present on the team. we have our quick and speed receivers. What we need is another big body WR to balance it out and i think Floyd would be a great pick up

Yeah, but
Floyd is a restricted free agent. No way chargers just let him go. He’ll be back in San Diego.
The two guys I think the Bears have a great shot at are Brandon Marshall and Donte Stallworth.
Marshall’s situation is a bit sticky though…. most likely going to be a sign-and-trade.
Broncos lucked out on the crap going on with the CBA…. otherwise Marshall would have walked clean…. easy.

I didn't realize he's restricted
He does have six years of service, which would give him an unrestricted FA status.

sign matt jones
EXACTLY…..we need a possesion WR (not TE) who also has speed.
Should have signed Matt Jones LAST YEAR. The guy still has 4.4 speed and is 6’5" with almost 40-inch vertical. Dude is such a freak, the Titans are going to end up getting him. Who cares if he was sitting in a car with old college buddies. He has the work ethic and physical skills. SIGN MATT JONES!

With all due respect.....
I have to disagree here about the “we have our speed WR already.”
Hester and Knox, while being fast aren’t more talented than Donte Stallworth.
Donte Stallworth is a wide receiver. Knox is becoming one, yes.
Also, I like Devin Aromashodu a heck of a lot more than Malcolm Floyd at this point.
Aromashodu is 3 years younger and looks better, IMO.
Donte Stallworth, when he played, looked a heck of a lot better than Knox and Hester, combined.
While his stats aren’t going to wow anyone, his physical ability will. I think he would make a much better WR combination than Floyd and Knox/Hester.
Aromashod would also get pushed back to the bench, and for what? Malcolm Floyd?
You want to stop D.A.’s development because Malcolm Floyd exists?
Floyd is a fine WR, but why pay him to come in and take D.A.’s position?
Give me DA, Stallworth to start with. Put Hester back on returns. Knox and Bennett are capable back-ups. But if the Bears are going to do any 4 or 5 WR sets, we need more than DA, Stallworth, Knox, and Bennett…
Heck, maybe Hester does returns ONLY, except in the case of a 5 WR set??

will do what? Who knows. Maybe he can sing like Enrique and find a career doing that….
I don’t have high hopes for him… but I’m certainly open to seeing what he can do in year 2.

Donte Stallworth
has also been out of the league for a year—who’s to say that hasn’t permanently affected his skill set?
Knox is also much younger than Stallworth—who’s not to say he can’t easily be as talented. Is it worth setting back Knox’s development for Stallworth?

Never really thought ..............
………….. he was worth all the fuss . Hes never posted more than 70 receptions , never caught more than 8 TD’s in a season and most importantly hes only been healthy for a full season 3 out of his 8 seasons . Can you say overrated ?
Heres his career numbers :
2002 – 42 recp, 594 yards , 8TD’s 14.1 YPC in 13 games played ( Saints )
2003 – 25 recp , 458 yards , 3TD’s 19.4 YPC in 11 games played ( Saints )
2004 – 58 recp , 767 yards , 5TD’s 13.2 YPC in 16 games played ( Saints )
2005 – 70 recp , 945 yards , 7TD’s 13.5 YPC in 16 games played ( Saints )
2006 – 38 recp , 725 yards , 5TD’s 19.1 YPC in 12 games played ( Eagles )
2007 – 46 recp , 697 yards , 3TD’s 15.2 YPC in 16 games played ( Pats )
2008 – 17 recp , 170 yards , 1TD 10 YPC in 11games played ( Browns )
2009 – 0’s across the board suspension
He played with the likes of Tom Brady , Donovan McNabb and Drew Brees and his numbers are still average . So no I don’t like him at all .

Agreed
and another caveat, i know that its coming on FA, but are we really going to has over EVERY SINGLE WR that comes available this year. i remember the “Sign Mike Furrey” crap that was coming across everywhere last year… Furrey, really? didnt he end up playing a DB on the Browns this year… who have no real receivers of Note (Cribbs does everything)…he still couldn’t manage to play WR

I just pulled up his stats to see what the fuss is about… then I scrolled down and saw you already did.
He may be an actual “wide receiver”, he’s just not a very good one.
And he did kill someone.

no, no, no NO
Why the hell would be need this inconsistant mope. Yes I know you have seen highlights but this guy is no better than Knox or hester. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this guy choke
Stallworth is not a bad WR...
but he’s a classic #2 compliment receiver to a true #1. The Bears have at least 2, maybe 3, of those type of WRs. Stallworth wouldn’t be a terrible guy to sign, but he’s about 21st on the list of things the Bears would need to upgrade and so it make no sense. Unless he’s willing to play for free during an upcapped season………nevermind!

actually no, but that only proves my point.
Regardless of where he was, the Holt has disappeared, might as well have been in prison. When he wasn’t in the clink I knew what Stallworth was doing because he always made plays.
He's never once cracked 1000 yards.
The only time he even got close was five years ago, and his numbers have declined every year since. In the years they’ve been in the league together, Stallworth has never once come close to matching Holt’s production in a given year. I’m not advocating for signing Holt, but I certainly don’t see how you can dismiss Holt as washed up while promoting Stallworth as being a serious playmaker. Oh, and in the two years prior to his arrest, when he “always made plays,” he caught 38/725 and 46/697.
"The time has come to get deeply into Football. It is the only thing we have left that ain't fixed." - HST
um 38/725 is about 19 yards per catch
that is pretty good. So what if he hasn’t posted over 1000 yards, not only are u getting too caught up on the 1000 yard mark, but it only proves that he would fit right in with our great “nucleus” which doesn’t contain a 1000 yard receiver either. I’m pretty sure JA thinks that adding a guy with 1000 yard season would upset the delicate balance he has created with our sorry specatcular bunch of receivers.
we dont need another WR like that
come on…do we really need to stock up on small guys with so-so hands and pray for the big play all the time or do you want steady hands that you can count on while you march downfield. Holt winds this battle everytime. And my ass QB’s and surrounding talent dont matter. Randy Moss really kicked it up in Oakland days right? TO looked great in Buffalo, and lets not forget TJ’s career year in Seattle. Holt is a guy you can really on. Stallworth is just another Dennis Northcutt.

Stallworth's not terrible
but I’m not interested in pursuing average or slightly-above-average receivers at this point. We’re already swimming in mediocrity, but at least our current mediocrity is due mostly to inexperience, and has the potential to excel. If we’re going to chase after a free agent WR, it needs to be someone with serious potential. Neither Holt nor Stallworth fit that bill.

I'm not in favor of the Bears pursuing Stallworth...
…but I think in terms of the bigger picture the Bears need to stop playing the role of the NFL’s “Rehab Policy” by automatically ruling out any good player that has had problems in the past. I think you do your homework and determine if the players assets outweigh his liabilities. In the case of Stallworth, the stats show he isn’t worth the reach.

No.
To put it mildly, Stallworth sucks. Not only does he suck, but he also got drunk and killed someone. Most people will disagree with me, but I put character above talent. Granted, about 98% of the NFL has character issues, but I don’t want a killer on my team, no matter how good of a player he is.
And if we do sign this monster, I will be even more furious with the Bears organization.

No way on this guy.
Not because of what he did because I believe in second chances, but because we have way too much young talent at WR. The only guy that I would like to get as a FA WR is Brandon Marshall and this will not happen.

I know he is restricted
and it will never happen, but if by some chance the planets aligned perfectly and it did happen, I would be stoked. I really don’t think WR is one of our top four needs. Don’t get me wrong, if they should happen to pick up a big bodied FA WR, I wouldn’t be mad depending on who it is. I would like to see them concentrate more on positions of need – OL, DB, RB.

I completely agree.....
I actually have fairly high hopes for RT if Omiyale moves back, and reasonably high hopes for Shaffer if he doesn’t. Mike Tice is an excellent line coach and both of those men have plenty of talent. They just need help with technique. That’s where Tice comes in. But Beekman needs to be groomed for his natural spot…..you know, the one he was drafted for. Olin’s eventual replacement. I don’t want to see Josh back at guard. I want a new LG.
Good call, ’red.

I disagree, somewhat....
I would place priority on OL (LG in specific), DL (all positions) and then FS. I have no real concerns at RB. Forte will rebound, and he is a good fit for a Martz led offense, and Bell impressed me late last season. Wolfe will remain on the roster doing what he does: phenominal ST work and producing well in limited spell work.
The biggest problem the DBs have is lack of pressure by the D-Line. I’m not trying to downplay the need for an honest FS. Don’t get me wrong. But the secondary will suffer, regardless of who we bring in, until the line is shored up. That’s how this scheme works, and like it or not, we have to put up with this scheme for at least one more season.

about donte that worries me isnt really his recent legal indiscretions because he wasnt really a “ocho cinco” type of guy whos always running his mouth and trying to start something or sumone whos getting into constant lil legal problems. it seems like he was legitly in one of those “i made a bad decesion and got caught in the wrong place at the wrong time” type situations that we have all been in at one point or antoher (not necessarily with ramifications like his but i digress….). whats more of a fact for me is he seems to be quite injury prone, having documented achilies problems since high school… i cant see the bears forking over the money for sum one who could b such a possible liability, i wouldnt be comfortable with it

Best response yet!
I agree 100%. I don’t see Stallworth as a repeat offender type. This is a guy who made a terrible mistake, but cooperated fully with the police and made no argument against his deserved punishment. He has never claimed he was wronged or even claimed that he wasn’t responsible. He took his lumps like a man, and came out on the other side seeming genuinely remorseful. He screwed up. But he deserves a second chance.
All that being said, I also agree that I don’t want his second chance to be in Chicago. I don’t like all of the injury issues, and he isn’t offering anything that Chicago doesn’t already have. I do hope he gets another shot, though.
