Hey! It's Me. I'm Blogging and Holding Contests. Kool, Right? - @Kevin_Payne

Yardbarker-kevin-payne-header-450_0_medium

[Intro from Dane: We are very excited to be able to introduce Kevin Payne to our readers here at WCG!  This will give Mr. Payne an opportunity to interact directly with his fans, and provide our readers with exclusive material from one of the most exciting young players on the Bears roster.  So, without further ado...]

Hey, Windy City Gridiron! Kevin Payne, here -- I hope all's well on your end.

I'm going to be doing the blogging and social media thing for you guys here this offseason and upcoming season. I've always wanted to have a closer connection with you guys, and now that there are SO MANY places around the web that can allow me to do so, I plan on putting together quite a show for all of you.

Star-divide

As we get to know each other around the Net, I wanna also try and do some cool things for you guys. I'm thinking we can arrange some opportunities where you can win tickets to games, autographed memorabilia (photos, jerseys, balls, etc.) from myself and my teammates, as well as a number of other cool things.

Speaking of giving away free stuff... How about we do a little of that, right now?

I'm finding out very quickly that it's not always easy to come up with new blog material, so I want to see if you'll do me a favor and give me a helping hand in thinking of some talking points.

In the below comments section, let me know any questions you might have about the Bears as a team, my teammates, or myself. They can be about either on-the-field or off-the-field stuff - it doesn't matter to me. I'm going to read each and every one of them and pick out the ones I want to answer. If I pick your question and respond to it in a blog post, I'll thank you by mailing you an autographed photo.

So lay it on me! Whatcha got!?!

Oh, and one more thing before I end this thing...

All my social media profiles are brand-spanking new, so, if you wanna, feel free to come hang out with me on some of them. There all listed on my Google Profile. Here's the link...

Google.com/profiles/KevinPayneNFL

I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you! I think we're gonna have a lot of fun...

Hey Kev, Few questions:

What do you think of the recent article suggesting that Manning is going to be moved to Strong Safety? If that happens, and the Bears go out and get a new starter at FS, what do you think the new depth chart will look like in the secondary? Lastly, who would be a better fit in free agency for the Bears: Antrel Rolle, Micahel Bush or Kerry Rhodes?

That’s awesome, now Manning might actually know about it.

Welcome Kevin

The Bears seem to be looking for a FS every year, and seem to go after guys who played more SS in college. They say that they feel the 2 positions are interchangeable in this defense.

What skills do the Bears need at the FS position that they currently don’t have on the roster? Do you think SS and FS are interchangeable?

Thanks, and good luck this season.

Lets hope Jerry is playing those cards close to the chest.

Kevin, welcome to the site! I’ve got a few questions.

1)Coming from a smaller college program like Louisiana-Monroe, how hard was it to adjust to the speed of the game when you first got to the NFL?

2) Since you’re a former (backup) punter, have the Bears ever asked to see your skills?

by tommite622 on Mar 1, 2010 4:48 PM CST up reply actions

Thanks for coming Kevin!

It’s great to have a player from the Bears give us an insider’s view to the team we love.

What position(s) on defense do you believe needs an upgrade the most? Here at WCG, we think FS and DE. Also, do you think Urlacher and Harris will make it back to the Pro-bowl this season? Thanks again.

Kevin -

Please reclaim your spot as starting Strong Safety on this team! Afterwards, tell Lovie to find you a real FS to work with.

That is, unless you can play DE.

What up KP, real cool to see ya on here.

I would like a bold prediction of what the Bears record will be next season as we stand right now. I know that we haven’t gotten into FA and the draft, I just want to know how optimistic you are about are chances next season. By the way, you are a big Hitter, being a fan since 1977…I love that and hope to see more, not just from you..but everybody.

In addition to commenting about the turf issues at Soldier Field, what surfaces around the NFL do you like to play on? Which fields (natural or artificial) are the best, which are the worst?

Hey Kevin! Great to have you here with us!

Do you still keep in touch with former Louisiana-Monroe teammate and short-lived Bears teammate Chris Harris? I’m sure it was pretty cool to get drafted by the Bears, knowing Harris was here… only to have him traded months later.

Looking forward to reading your stuff.

Nice to see a....

So my question has a few parts to it , First off which free agent players do you think would most help our defense ? We’ve debated on this site that Kampman and Peppers would help , but some think that Antrel Rolle or a free saftey in general is a bigger priority . What’s your opinion on that ? Lastly , what kind of impact do you see Rod Marinelli having as the new defensive coordinator ?

And I’m with some others here , I want to see you manning our strong safety position ! And for when you DO get it back keep layin the wood to fools !!!!!

Great to have you on board...

we have a lively forum here and I am absolutely giddy to mix it up with some real Bears players. We are less than happy about the past few seasons and we respect that everyone wants to win, but not everyone can. I personally am very critical of Lovie as a defensive coach and I would love to hear your views on what needs to be done to get the defense to improve overall. I promise to be civil, but I will also not disrespect you but sugar-coating my comments. Now get out there and win the SS job!!!!!!!!!!

Question

What’s really going on with Tommie Harris? He’s too good a football player to be so invisible at times. Also, does the team really believe they can win the Super Bowl with Lovie Smith as HC?
And with that question, could you possibly elaborate on how much us “average” fans really don’t know about NFL football? Because to me, I see a HC that looks utterly lost everytime I see him on the sidelines. Could you possibly put me in my place and let me know what’s really going down?

Hi Kevin

Wanted to welcome you to the WCG community, it’s pretty cool to have an actual player on here. I think Lovie may have a profile but haven’t figured out who he is yet. What’s the buzz around the locker room as far as the FA signing’s go? I know that the MSM is thinking we’ll make a play for Peppers but not get him. Also what is your normal offseason routine as far as workouts, film study etc… And thanks again for taking the time out of your schedule to hang out with us hope you enjoy your time…

Us fans here only see one side of Lovie Smith, always cool and colective, never calling his players out in the media, and never telling us something we already don’t know. Is there another side to him in the locker room that we don’t get to see? does he ever just break down and lose it. Or is he an Alien inhabiting a human body?
Also what is the over all fealing in the locker room, is the fealing that we are competitve enough and close or do they feal that there are some teams just still a notch or two above us.

I haven’t really looked too much into this, but I haven’t seen too many nicknames floating around here for you. Do you have one that family members called you growing up? Coaches or teammates have given you in high school, college, or w/ the Bears? One that fans have given you and I’ve been too ignorant to notice? If not we should definitely have a contest.

My vote would be for “The House of Payne”. Never watched the show, but it would sound pretty sweet to hear the commentators say it after a bone-jarring hit (Madden anyone?) and have this play shortly after!!! BOOM!

Have you been told by anyone this off-season, that you will be competing for a starting role on the D this year?

How’s your knowledge of the game, when it comes to past players?

Are you aware that the Hall of Fame Voters pretty much suck at this point?

What would you say is biggest miss perception of the Chicago Bears organization?

Miss Perception or Misperception?

And nice way to work in your frustration with the HOF Committee.

BUT

I do appreciate the Miss Perception link…

Reminded me of a very funny movie called Drop Dead Gorgeous.

No problem.

I don’t recall that movie, but I do remember Drop Dead Fred!

Not taking anything away from DDF just saying FGF is better.

As a bears fan you should appreciate the use of sausage.

For me FGF is a little disturbing

I saw the comment you mentioned at the top of the thread

and deleted it. It was just overlooked. Feel free in the future to use the flagging system to bring a comment to our attention instead of just griping about it in a thread. With threads that get a lot of comments, it’s easy to miss something. But flagging a comment brings it right to our attention. Thanks.

You never seem to miss mine..............

Other than when I posted you the plug I tweeted at Earl Bennett about WCG. I have an idea, just delete EVERYTHING Irish Bears has to say and well be good.

I'm with you on FGF.

It’s one of only two movies that I’ve cut off in the middle of and walked completely away from.

Can I ask what the other was?

Personally, I thought FGF was hilarious. There is nothing, and I mean NOTHING, disturbing about a grown man wrapped up in the bloody carcass of a dead deer. Just my opinion, ha.

I have another question:

If you were putting together an “All-Payne” team and the first player you picked had to be someone off of the current Bears roster, who would you pick 1st, yourself excluded of course, and why?

Pretty cool that he is doing this.

Although I don’t know if he will have enough time to answer all of these questions.

2 extra regular season games?

Hey Kevin. I have a question about the possible addition of 2 more regular season games & subtraction of 2 pre-season games. Just curious to hear it from an NFL players perspective. How do you feel about that? And what seems to be the overwhelming view from teammates & other players around the league you may have talked to about this?

by jackhammerebm on Mar 2, 2010 10:33 AM CST reply actions

Whats up Kevin? Great to have ya.

I posted some questions earlier but thought I’d try again. What is the one part of your game that you want to improve most on and what do you think is your best part of the game?
Also, from what I hear you were a lettered in basketball in high school and also played catcher. Do you think you took anything away from those games that helped you transition from RB to Safety?

by Lweb23 on Mar 2, 2010 10:34 PM CST reply actions

Who's lays the biggest hit

at rb that you’ve played against? Seeing it on tv can be deceiving, but AP looks like ferocious coming through the line. Until he fumbles anyway. Also, do you see Vasher being there next year? Honestly? I think they’ve given him every opportunity, even trying him at safety next year to get him on the field and now he may be a DMS victim as well. He hasn’t looked impressive at all since coming back from injury. Thanks for taking the time and thanks for taking the to chat at warm-ups in Seattle this year. Piso was the only other one I saw acknowledge and interact with any fans. Hope to see him back and healthy this year too. DOMINATE in 2010!!!!

As a player who isn't necessairly a starter

Is it nerve-racking to go through the offseason with the media talking about the needs at Safety? Or is it like “whatever happens, happens”? Do you just not pay attention to that stuff or does it affect you and/or your teammates? How much do you pay attention to the media during the offseason? (Sorry if this is way too many questions)

Kevin

How bleepin’ pumped are you to have J. Peppers chasing down QB on your side of the ball?

by rdent4hof on Mar 5, 2010 2:32 PM CST reply actions

Hey, Kevin

We as fans are extremely exited to have Julius Peppers in Chicago. But as a player, I can’t imagine what thoughts and emotions might might be flowing through your body right now. I know you already play with superstars like Lance Briggs and Brian Urlacher, but how will having Julius Peppers getting into the face of the quarterback benefit you and your teammates on every play? It’ll be insisting to hear what you have to say, or are you right now lost for words.( I understand, I was lost for words when I heard this news too!)

Kevin...

It’s been rumored that Danieal Manning is going to be moved to the strong safety spot. Assuming that Chicago makes no move for a safety in FA, I see the best option, with the current roster, as being DM at the FS spot and you in the SS spot, where you performed well in ’08 as the starter. What are your thoughts on what the safety configuration should be?
