Atogwe in Bears Radar?
I don't know if anyone has already posted this before or not and if so im sorry for reposting it. I was looking at some rumors and I spotted this 1. I really hope its true and the Bears make a push to try and get Atogwe from St. Louis.
I believe if we do get Atogwe our Defense will be set and we can focus on our O-line in the draft.

Then we'd be looking for a 3 technique.
We can’t afford to get a position but lose another.

Get this deal done JA...
It could solidify the best FA offseason the Bears have ever had.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO FIRE LOVIE!
Hadn't seen this
I hope they get this done. And you’re right, if they get this guy I believe they are set on defense and can spend the drat on the O-line and maybe a WR
To be honest....
I’m happy at the fact that we’re going to pursue him…..
If we sign him then I wouldn’t mind us drafting O-line or Corner…..
How come they reference...
…the Tribune but i can’t find anything on the website? Has anyone else looked?
I saw the article a few days ago on there.
More or less just giving their thoughts on what they think should happen. No sources saying it was in the works though.
Adrian Pedestrian!! Now that's funny Mr. Bayless...
Sporting News has been on this all week
I hope they have a good source!

Wow, I didn’t know he led the league in this category. Get it done JA!

ed reed is #2
thats a hell of a person to be in front of
I really, really, really
want OJ on the Bears.
But the more I look at it, the more I think it won’t happen.
The Cards do NOT want to lose this player. They just want the market to set a price which they can match. It is that simple. If they were even slightly considering the possibility of losing him, they would have given him a higher tender. Period.
There are only two ways that I see the Bears getting Otgawe:
1. Poison Pill. I think this is HIGHLY unlikely given how Jerry behaves. Moreover, Otagwe may not even agree to an agreement with a poison pill. It doesn’t help him and in the end he decides what agreement he will present to the Rams. He can present ONE agreement and one agreement only. So he will shop for the best one and it does not serve his interests to present one with a poison pill.
2. Trade: The Bears work out an agreement with Otagwe that he is comfortable with and then the Bears go back and deal with St. Louis and get their agreement NOT to match in return for something from the Bears— Olsen, draft pick, whatever.
I’d say that the one thing the Bears might have going for us right now is that players generally seem to want to play for Lovie. From all accounts he is VERY popular with players and that could be a draw for Otagwe. Plus, the addition of Peppers will make his job easier, give him more picks and opportunities to shine so that could be enticing too.
All that said, I don’t feel real good about this happening for us right now if we’re not prepared to SPEND and to deal.
The Rams
not the Cards. I think OJ would be elated to leave a team with no hope in the immediate future, and would gladly leave them for a team with a chance. How does a poison pill hurt him if he gets paid the way he wants?

Submitting an offer with a poison pill...
kind of makes him an accessory to a crime. And, there is a chance that he could actually get MORE from the Rams (although unlikely) if he submits an offer without a poison pill. Who knows, these guys have been in discussions for two years on a long term agreement. Maybe he already has something in place with them that says, we’ll match any offer you bring and give you an extra (insert term here: roster bonus/5% bump, whatever) as long as it doesn’t have any poison pills in it. That’s pure speculation of course but would make a lot of sense if you think about it.
Possibly
I kind of think they’ll match any deal without a “poison pill” as well, cause there’s no compensation involved if he leaves. Kind of weird they didn’t just tender him with a 1st rounder or something. If they’re unwilling to pay him 7m, then why match any offer which would most undoubtedly be in that range?
''I'm really not a Facebook or Twitter guy. I'm a prime rib and baked potato guy.'' - Sweet Lou
Well...
That’s just it. They don’t (or at least at the time of tendering they didn’t think) it WILL be in that range. Remember, $7M for a single season for a safety would be almost unprecedented. That was pre-Antrell Rolle deal of course. But the reason not to tender with anything higher than what they offered is because if they did, then no matter what they would be on the hook for $7M— not even up for discussion.
And the other wild card...
As to why they might not have felt comfortable with a $7M offer is his injury. He ended the season on DL and maybe they know something about that shoulder that the rest of us don’t. That issue clouds the picture a bit right now as well.
It's a very strange situation
It’s almost like they don’t want to retain him, but if the offer is reasonable they’ll match. Do you know what happens if he isn’t offered a contract by another team? Eventually they have to negotiate a new deal, correct?
''I'm really not a Facebook or Twitter guy. I'm a prime rib and baked potato guy.'' - Sweet Lou
That's right.
If no other offers come in they have until June 1 to sign him. After that he becomes UFA.
Really, I think the right call is this:
We negotiate a good deal with OJ.
We go to the Rams with OJ and say,if you agree not to match we’ll give you Greg Olsen and you give us your first pick in the fourth round.
Olsen is probably worth a late second round early third on a one-to-one trade but we get Atogwe out of this so they deserve a bit more and we let him go for a fourth. The Rams desperately need a pass catching TE (along with lots of other things) and giving up a 4th is no biggie. Losing OJ will hurt them but they have enough early picks (#1 in each round) to replace him if they want.
I’ve been suggesting this for a while and everyone thinks I’m crazy but as I said:I really, really want this guy. I think he can be better than Mike Brown on a good defense.
can he give us as many good years in return
for what Greg Olsen will give them though… and that’s what you’d have to weigh… I guess i’m up for it as well, because I really want Atogwe

Well
Olsen has two years left on his contract and then its free agency for him. My gut tells me he will have a worse year in 2010 than in 2009. And if the Bears have success next year then Martz and Lovie will stick around and an under-utilized pass catching tight end will be one unhappy camper. So…
BTW...
It is worth noting that the Rams just resigned Fells (a day or so ago,) he is their very medicore existing tight end..so this scenario is looking a little less likely.
That's not a bad deal
but trading Olsen is probably not a wise choice. I’d offer something else like one of our several good LBs with no pick returned.

Yes...
I don’t know why I still mix up Cards/Rams— funny, I don’t do that with any other MLB/NFL teams but I find myself doing it frequently with the Rams.
Anyway….One other point: I agree with you on how enticing the Bears have become and that, to me, is our only hope.
But in reality, it is clearly about money right now with Atogwe. As I have been saying all along, $7M for season 1 seems to be the magic number since we know that is what Arizona seems unwilling to pay.
If you had to do it all over again would you have gone with the Chester Taylor signing for $7M or gone after Atogwe and tried to fill your back up RB position with a cheaper Westy or LT or Bell + a mid-round draft pick.
I don’t know but it is what it is right now.
I would hope they are interested in him.
Already burning a lot of money, just keep on going and get this guy who looks like a good fit with the defense.
Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.
I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
