Bears' Madness Begins
In honor of "March Madness", over the next couple of weeks, we will be conducting Bears' Madness. 64 Chicago Bears will face-off in Windy City Gridiron's pool to determine our readership's favorite Bears. There's no set criteria, just pick who you like in each matchup. Our first contest is from the East Regional (regions have no deeper meaning here, randomness of the regions should produce more "lively" debate):
1 vs. 16. Walter Payton (1) vs. Rex Grossman (16)
(We'll have a downloadable sheet with all the match-ups some time this week...I hope)

Grossman voters
If someone actually votes for Gross, man they should be banned from the site. Long live Sweetness.

Because at least he scored in a Super Bowl.

So I’m taking Rexy. Say what you want, but I have a lot of great memories watching him (bad ones too).

Yeah
But I’m not old enough to have watched Payton in his prime. If this was a “who’s better” poll, I’d obviously pick Payton, but it’s a “who’s your favorite” poll, so if my favorite player happens to be Jason McKie, who the hell are you to tell me I’m wrong?

Meh, just look at the clues, and it will explain everything.
Both of the names in the user ID being without caps, the excessive usage of exclamation points, the internet scary laugh, and the vote for Rex.
Add it all up, and it’s a classic case of Yahoo-itis.
Don’t forget the complete lack of ability to use anything even remotely approaching English (and I’m willing to bet he’s a native speaker).

we all know who will win
payton will win by a landslide, followed by Ditka, Butkis (who should be #1) and Singletary.
Butkis is the ultimate Bear, he single handedly personifies what being a Chicago Bear is all about. Tough, Mean, Feared and Respected
You correctly predicted all the #1 seeds.
We’ll have a few posts/polls a day to get down to 32 by Friday.

No Sayers!?!?
Sorry but Gale Sayers was the greatest running back to ever don a Bears jersey. The real shame is that he got hurt in an era where they didn’t have the technology they have today. I love Sweetness and he was a great human being but….
If you can't laugh at yourself you must not be very funny.
Just because he's not a number one seed
doesn’t mean he’s not included… you’ll be able to vote him over someone else, I’m sure! :]

What?
You are kidding, right? Butkus was great, but Payton was SWEETNESS! You never hear old Dick’s name in the greatest of all time argument. Walter is never left out of it.
But hey, if Walter hadn’t been a Bear, I’d be right with you.
I'd say an argument could be made....
Payton would definitely be my choice, but Butkus is arguable the meanest, most vicious and greatest defensive player ever. I wouldn’t be angry if he edged out Payton.

1 : The act of doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.
Kidding? Not at all.
If you never hear Butkus’s name in the greatest Bears player of all time, you are hanging out with ignorant people. Payton was wonderful, and a great case can be made for him as the greatest Bears player ever, but IMO Butkus is the greatest Bears’ player ever and at worst the 2nd greatest NFL player ever.

I couldn't argue that either.
I would personally chose Payton, but only by the slimmest Margin over Butkus or Brown. Where Nagurski not of such a different era, I would make my argument for him.

1 : The act of doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.
Nagurski
may be the greatest Bears player but he was just too many years before my time for me to have an informed opinion.
As for Jim Brown or Payton, Brown was head and shoulders, literally and figuratively over Payton.

It's a matter of symantics and styles.
Brown was probably the best pure runner ever and running back ever. But Payton did so much well. His blocking was superb, he passed well, he received well, he was as durable as they come, and he never died easy. I just loved his game, so in my book, he’s above everyone…..the best player ever……..But I can’t argue against Brown, either. He was a pure beast. It’s like asking which flawless diamond is better.

Interesting series!
There could be lots of criteria here as said in the OP.
You could view it as favorite bears in your lifetime so Sweetness would sadly be out for a fair number of us since we never got to see his on field accomplishments.
Let me introduce you to YouTube. Or, for that matter, any kind of recorded moving media.

Of course it goes without saying,
Payton in a landslide. It’s really an honor that Grossman even made the 64 man field.

The 2's?
If Payton, Butkus, Ditka and Singletary are the 1’s
I’d have Sayers, Nagurski, Luckman and Atkins as the 2’s
Hampton, Blanda, Dent (of course) and Red Grange as the 3’s
Kreutz, B. George, “Bulldog” Turner and McAfee as the 4’s
I’m excluding Halas… IMHO he’s the creator, the architect, the everything. Putting Halas on this list doesn’t feel right to me.
If I could re-post
Urlacher would replace McAfee.
If this was an Oilers or Raiders poll, maybe, but not Blanda as a Bears player
