Strange pickup
Does this mean they don’t have much faith in DJ Moore? Or is this just another “camp body” for the Bears?

falls under the heading of

That would be true if Jennings actually covered anything.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Butler is going to go to the sweet 16. Whatever happens after that is anyone's guess.

Bears picked Jennings up for his speed and sadly not for any sort of coverage skills (whatever they may be)…nothing more nothing less. This guy is going to be a ST…at best a surprise like Tim Shaw at worst a replacement for Rasheed Davis or even Garrett Wolfe…if Tim makes it through camp.

Seems like another ...
…. camp body signing to me , but Jennings could surprise .

Pray he's never more than a dimeback for you
he’s got blazing speed, tackles very well, doesn’t get beat deep, but he’s so slow reacting to the throw that he gives up a ridiculous number of receptions. Brandon Marshall’s reception record was almost entirely from working over Tim Jennings and the Colts were losing CBs to injury too fast to get anyone better on him.
Fine guy to have on the edge of the roster to play STs and prevent D, but you don’t want to see him appearing regularly in the defense.

Maybe not . He could still .....
…… be our FS . His tackling is suspect and his ability to hit is also lacking . I’d be fine , barring a free agent signing , with Manning at FS and Payne as our SS . If they’ll leave Manning at one spot this kid could produce .

If he plays Nickel for you
you’re in trouble. Jennings is not a guy you want there. “10 yard Tim” always, ALWAYS, gives at least cushion of 10+ yards. A QB will have success throwing at him all day long.

Well then Jennings
may take it upon himself to give 15 yards just to out do everyone else

He's the worst cornerback in NFL history
I truly feel bad for you guys. He’s the king of cushion.

Well....

That’s what our defense does best….ugh.

big cushion and slow to break on the throw
if just plays STs and some dime, you guys will like him, but if you have him in to get picked on in the nickel for constant 3rd down conversions to the sticks, you’ll hate him as much as we all do.

Not sure
where we have room for him.
Bowman- starter
Tillman- stater
D. Manning- nickel/FS/SS (who knows really where he’ll be)
Payne/AA- SS
DJ Moore- backup CB/nickel
Graham- backup CB/FS?
Seems like he’s destined for the practice squad or a very backup role like you recommended.

He can't be on the practice squad
Special teams or working at McDonald’s.

McDonalds
would be the best options here. He is an OK special teamer…but he is a nightmare on D

Most likely
he’s a camp body. I forgot to add Jerry Angelo’s annual drafting of 5th and 6th rounders for our secondary. Well, that’s if he in fact signs a FA FS to start. I don’t see any room for this guy on the Bears. Based on your analysis I don’t think being the “fry guy” at McD’s is a bad gig for him.

I wouldn't even give him that much responsibility.
I would make him clean toilets before that….

Maybe
that’s why he was signed- cleaning Halas Hall’s vast system of toilets.

Giving a cushion is a coaches call
not sure why people always put that on the player. If a coach doesn’t want his corner playing off, and he plays off, he’ll be replaced or released.
I think his signing may signal the end of Danieal Manning as a Bear.

This is a love/hate signing...
D.J. Moore is a better player than this guy, and of all things is taller.
On the other hand, we got rid of McKie which makes me a special kind of happy.

McKie would be a better corner than Jennings
I’m very biased though.

How is the bigger story here not McKie being gone?
This blog loves to hate on him and this means, mostly (although we all knew w/ Martz) no more FB dive. Also I guess he was expendable b/c Martz doesn’t use a FB at all, right? Or does he? Maybe he wants some kind of leaner, better rushing/pass catching FB.
Because his release will get its own post

Ummm...
…. we have a younger , more versatile FB in Eddie Williams . So this was just us keeping one fullback and McKie was the odd man out .

Why do we need
another 5’8" CB that can’t cover? Guess I was getting spoiled with some of the other FA signings we’ve had lately.
Did some research on Mr. Jennings
He doesn’t seem to be as bad as some of these Colt fans are claiming. He was rated at 63rd out of 107 CBs last season as their nickel back according to PFF. Here are some of his numbers from ’09.
Last season the 5-8, 185-pounder played in 15 games with five starts, recording 56 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed. Jennings was due to become a restricted free agent, but he did not receive a tender offer from the Colts.
I think it’s awfully difficult to say this guys sucks with stats like that. Tackles and passes defensed are numbers that really stand out to me. Everyone should remember how decimated the Colts secondary was last year.

Awesome find propheteer
Yes Jennings was in the game that allowed Marshall to get his record breaking receptions…but he also had a key int. against Orton in that game near the end zone…it killed whatever comeback the Broncos had going for them.

Yes
but way ahead of Tillman (82) and Bowman (102) our starters. Their very low rankings had something to do with our pass-rush though. With Peppers aboard, I see everyone in the secondary improving ten-fold.

3rd worst success rate among qualifying CBs
he doesn’t just give up a ton of catches in front of him, that’s somewhat a part of the scheme, he gives up passes in front of him for effective yardage.

All of these stats are difficult to gauge
Tim Jennings is here because of the Colts’ defensive philosophy: prevent the big play, even if it means allowing a first down.
Caveat: If it’s indeed the conservative nature of the philosophy, then he’s probably better than what these stats show. As a nickel in the Bears defense he’ll be able to be locked up one on one the majority of the time. I wonder if he mainly struggled in the “bend don’t break” zone coverages that Indy employs.
