Mocking the Mocks: What they think the Bears will do.
Checking out the various Mock Drafts floating around out there is always fun. I like to get a national perspective on which direction they think Bears will take. Sometimes it makes no sense, but occasionally a site will hit on someone that strikes a cord with the Bear faithful. With the Bears making their initial pick in the third round it makes it harder to find some thorough mocks out there, but a few do delve deeper than day one of the Draft.
Will Chicago GM Jerry Angelo go with the need positions or will he peg the best player available? Or will he be fortunate enough to have the best player on his board also be a need position?
After the jump lets see what the "experts" have to say about the Chicago Bears and their 2010 Draft.
Fantasy Football Jungle has a mock up to pick #95 and as of March 21st they have the Bears taking Mike Williams the WR from Syracuse with pick #74. Here's what they had to say in regards to the selection;
They will be lucky if Williams is still here because he has 2nd round talent but falls this far due to off the field issues. He's strong, fairly fast (4.5 in the 40 at the combine) and fights for the ball when it is in the air. His route running isn't where it needs to be, but he is the type of player that can go get Cutler's errant passes.
No thanks. First off I don't think they'll go receiver with their top pick, and secondly if they do it won't be Williams. There is just too much baggage that goes along with him. In their mock they have the big offensive lineman from LSU Ciron Black going to the Packers at #86. If the actual NFL Draft is falling like they believe it will, my pick is Black.
NFLDraft101 has a 3 round mock up and rolling and as of March 22nd they have the Bears going with the controversial offensive tackle Tony Washington from Abilene Christian. I can see the Bears drafting him, I just don't see them doing so in the 3rd round. Their mock has some interesting defensive back prospects still on the board. Vanderbilt CB Myron Lewis who some think will end up at FS in the NFL and FS Major Wright from Florida would both be better options for Chicago in the third.
If you fancy OL with this pick, their mock has Vladimir Ducasse going 5 picks after the Bears (to Denver). He would be a good addition to the Bears. The Massachusetts left tackle projects to either RT or G in the NFL, and is getting up to a 2nd round grade by some scouts.
Draft Debacled has a bunch of mocks posted and their most recent is from March 21st. They have the Bears taking Oklahoma CB Dominique Franks in the 3rd and Notre Dame C/G Eric Olsen in the 4th. I don't mind these picks. I like the upside of Olsen, and Franks has been receiving a 2nd round grade on some sites.
This might seem like a strange pick, but Franks is big value at this selection and Chicago's secondary is kind of a mess anyway. They need reliable cover men.
The Bears secondary a mess? Draft Debacled has another writer that did a 3 round mock as of March 21st and he has the Bears going Jon Asamoah the guard from Illinois. Again, no problem there. I liked his reasoning;
Why can't Matt Forte run? Interior line stinks.
Walter Football takes their mock up to the 4th round, and as of last week they had the Bears going Morgan Burnett the FS from Georgia Tech in the 3rd and guard Mike Johnson of Alabama in the 4th. Solid picks.
The Bears have had a hole at free safety for years. It's time to find a capable player at the position.
Matt Forte fantasy owners, direct your hate mail toward left guard Frank Omiyale, who couldn't open up any running lanes for his star back when he was in the lineup. A major overhaul is needed for Chicago's offensive line.
If Burnett lasts to their pick Bears fans would be flipping their lid in anticipation of the Bears getting their draft card to the podium, but after his great pro day I think he's shot up to the 2nd round. And Johnson is a guy that grades out good in the passing game.
What do you think Bears fans? Did these "experts" draft the way you think would benefit the Bears?
In a week or so I'll take another look at some Mock drafts and on Thursday I'll get back to my series looking at Bears Draft Weekend Possibilities.

WR with the first pick is nonsense. Walter football should be spot-on when the draft arrives. If the Bears pick anything but an O-linemen or a secondary player with their first two picks it would be insanity. I understand you shouldn’t always draft to need, but their “need” is way too great at either position(s). I’d love to see Burnett ball-hawking in their cover-2 for years to come.

That was a terrible pick
For me not as much because it was a WR, but because of which WR. If a talented WR slips to them it wouldn’t surprise me if they did take a receiver. But I agree it should be FS / OL.

I kind of disagree
They keep falling into a trap of drafting for need. And we get guys like Gilbert and Melton who don’t even see a snap in their rookie year.
Take the best football player that falls to you. That’s the Bill Polian method. Great players make your team better, regardless of what position they play.

The way things look...
JA might luck into having the highest player on his board be either a DB or a OL

you sir..
Win at life…that’s what we should look for this year…someone who can jump out of a pool and/or sand.
They both were lauded as "value" picks.

They already mis-evaluated both of them.
GIlbert was drafted to play DT, and Melton was a converted RB, playing DE… drafted to play DE.
They’ve already reversed the plan, and asked Melton to put on even more weight to play DT, and Gilbert to move to the outside.
Horrible drafting… and they drafted to fill needs. LOL.

I dont see how you can rate either of the 2 as horrible picks
when we havent seen em play…Gilbert was descibed as being able to play both positions and Melton was a raw end with alot of upside…I can see where the Bears are going with Melton, he puts on more muscle add that to his obvious athleticism and you have a DT that’s hard to handle…Just because they didnt play their rookie year doesnt automatically reduce them to horrible picks
Kobe isnt good....He's just better than your favorite player
Yep
You can’t evaluate a draft pick for 2-3 years. With that said, they sure could’ve used a FS and another linemen to contribute right away.

It doesn't mean the players are horrible,
but it means that once again the management/coaching staff drafted square pegs to fill round holes. It’s not an indictment of the players themselves, just of the general stupidity that goes on during our drafts. I chalk a lot of it up to Angelo believing his own hype as the mid-round guru. “Hmm, we need a FS, and there are three well-touted and proven prospects available, but I’m gonna take this guy from Northeastern Michigan Poly-tech A&M State, even though he spent no time playing FS and he struggled in coverage. How come everyone else isn’t as smart as me?”

No Micheal Johnson
was the best player available when we picked. The bengals picked him 2 or 3 spots later.
And he had ....
…. an average season at best .

Phil Loadholt was still on the board when we traded out of the 2nd round. Not that we needed a RT or anything.

DE was not really a need though
FS, G, T, CB, WR were all needs.
''I'm really not a Facebook or Twitter guy. I'm a prime rib and baked potato guy.'' - Sweet Lou
DE was a HUGE need last year! Who are you kidding?
They were focused on improving the pass rush, and hired Marinelli. Plus, pass rushers are a premium on any defense, but especially on the defense we play here. We draft DEs EVERY year. And, we were heading into a season where O-Gun and M Anderson were due to become FAs.

How many times
did we here that Hot Rod was their best free-agent aquisition of the off-season? The team already had a solid three man rotation at DE (at least that’s what they thought), so I beg to differ that it was a position of need. They were totally, and utterly value picks. Were they the correct picks? No.

It's not that they get into a trap of drafting for need,
It’s that they draft bad.
I see nothing wrong with weighting your choices toward a position of need. I prefer a blended approach. It should be as follows:
1. Determine your top areas of need.
2. Draft the best player available that falls into one of those categories.
3. If, for some weird reason, an absolute stud falls to you that doesn’t fit an area of need, it overrides the first 2 rules and you draft him. (Example: a first-round or high-second round talent falls to us in the third.)
The hard part of drafting isn’t figuring out whether to draft best available or for need, its figuring out the studs from the busts. Which lately we’ve had trouble with. Hopefully we’ll get luckier/smarter this go-round. And stay away from Abilene-Christian players for once.
I like it
but Tony Washington OT from Abilene-Christian will be a Bear

Rule 0:
Draft someone from Abilene-Christian or Vandy.
Lol
I hate the perennial Abilene-Christian pick. I think Jerry must’ve got good value one year there and so he feels like he’ll always get good players there, like Abilene is some gold mine only he knows about.
Kinda like my buddy in my FFL league that struck gold the one year (2007) he picked up Derek Anderson, and for the past 2 years has drafted him in the top 5 rounds.
2008- “Told you this dude was a stud! He’s gonna be even better this year!”
2009-“He just had a rough season, sophomore slump and all that, he’s gonna turn it around this year, I can feel it…”
I can just see Angelo saying the same thing to the McCaskeys during the post-draft meetings: “We made this really savvy pick because we got a diamond in the rough from a small school. It shows how good of a scout I am.”
McCaskeys: “Let me guess, he came from Abilene Christian?”
Jerry: “How’d you guess?”
well, as long as we keep his sister away
he should be able to focus and improve.
We would be lucky to get Asamoah in the 3rd
If he is there the bears would be stupid not to sprint to the podium.
if we have an opportunity in the later rounds
Kent State’s Konz has some impressive numbers

Nice find
Trade Olsen for an early 2nd rounder, and draft this guy to replace him in more ways than one- flowing golden-locks.

MAC Prospect - Love it
This guy could be the next Cribbs or Julian Edelman as far as unheralded prospects from Kent State who make an impact.

I would jump for joy
if Walter Football’s draft came true. Just don’t see either of those guys being available at those spots; I almost doubt Johnson’s available even for the Bears’ 3rd round pick.
Morgan Burnett & Eric Olsen ...
…. would be better , but Mike Johnson and Burnett would be just fine .

One thing about Myron Lewis...
The reports are he didn’t struggle at his pro-day, in fact his stock as a FS has actually climbed in some circles.

If Jerry and Lovie were listening to me...
Rd 3 Myron Lewis CB/FS Vanderbuilt or Morgan Burnett FS – Georgia Tech
Rd 4 Eric Olsen C/G Notre Dame
Rd 5 Tony Williamson OT Abeline Christian (I know he has some baggage but in the 5th he would be a good pick up)
Rd 6 Chris Maragos FS Wisconsin (I know I’m a Badger Homer, but the kid can play and would provide legitmate depth at the position…what a concept)
Rd 7 Let Jerry and Lovie throw a dart at the board and select the best of what’s left…
Unreasonable people make life difficult...
I like this..
I’m still of the FS first camp..unless a big trade goes out the door for a 2nd round pick..then lineman.
I like this too!
I spotlighted those guys in the last few weeks!

We have a huge, obvious need as FS
But I still believe we need to try and improve the O-line as our # 1 priority. Giving Cutler more time in Martz offense is just too damn important. If we can keep our ints under 15-20, I think we make the playoffs this year.
