Posted a slow 4.62 at the combine, but a strong 22 in the Bench....

Given that the biggest knock on Kam seems to be his coverage ability, and the biggest upside seems to be his presence in the box, Kam seems more like a SS fit.

I know saying that won’t be popular, but it feels right.

Gotta agree ....

…. with you here Train . This kid is a strong safety in the NFL period . His speed screams SS or maybe even a move to linebacker .

by MidWayMonster54 on Mar 3, 2010 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

I think he's going to be a good SS in the league.....

I just don’t think the Bears need another SS. He played FS in college, true enough. But this is a much faster game. But he will be a beast of a SS. The kid reminds me of a young Mike Brown when you watch tape of him hitting.

Mike...

Spent 2000 to 2004 as a free safety, but lost a lot of speed after the achilles injury in 2004, and was moved to SS, where he played until 2008, when the Bears moved him back to FS because they had no other options. He played SS in KC this season, as well. His speed made all the difference.

wikipedia is.....

pretty much universally considered crap as a source, so no. I’m not done. But the links provided above should clear the argument up. Mike was switched to SS after he sustained the achilles injury.

I can dig it!

while 4.62 isn’t fast it was pretty average amongst DBacks and most dont have his size. He looked good at the combine. I don’t really care if we draft him and put him at Strong Safety instead of Free Safety where he belongs. I expect us to target a safety even if they go after Peppers of Kampman, Sharper/a. rolle and a couple of other guys are out there. Thatd be cool, just put Chancellor at the other Safety position. Just no more Daniael or Bullocks.

by No It All on Mar 3, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

I have no problem with....

the idea of bringing him in to play SS. His coverage skills and speed would make him just another in a long line of FS failures in Chicago. As a SS, the kid will be a monster in the truest sense on the word. Backs would almost consider running into briggs just to avoid making it into his sights………. Have you watched any tapes of this kid hitting? Ouch………

No thank you

He looks pretty terrible. He’s as slow as a LB; can’t cover, takes horrible angles, etc.

I don't think it was all bad.....

Kam will make a very good SS with some work. I think he could be a future pro bowler. I just disagree that he can be a FS at the NFL level…..

I think I’d pass, too, though. we currently have a glut of SS’s

Agreed

He has good ball-hawking skills, no doubt, but he looks TERRIBLE in coverage. Not a whole lot of speed and misses tackles (though he does bring the pain every now and again). We can’t afford to take him.

all set @ SS

I thought we learned our lesson about drafting SSs to play FS.

SS and TE are 2 positions that we really don’t need to waste any of our precious few draft picks on.

I'll rec you for the excellent photoshop

But I really hope the Bears don’t pick him with their first pick, and he is a going to be a SS which we have too many of already anyway.

Thanks.

And for the record, I don’t advocate everything I photoshop. I generally get my ideas from the comments on this board. Without you guys…

Precisely. He’ll just shoot through (and under) the gap and grab the ball during the exchange. Let’s see a blocker get under his pads!

I really liked what I saw from his youtube vid...

and I knew that KIA would be all over this, thought it was his post at first. I thought he would be faster than a 4.62, strong bench though. With that time combined with that strength.. definintely = SS.

40 times are more important then they should be.

4.62 for a guy at 6’4 230 is pretty good. FS or SS doesn’t matter.

by No It All on Mar 3, 2010 10:58 PM CST reply actions

No you just ....

… can’t see past your man crush on Kam . Hes a strong safety my man and we got plenty of those on the roster . He’s so-so in coverage , a 50-50 tackler and is a little slow to react to plays . But he is one hell of a hitter .

by MidWayMonster54 on Mar 3, 2010 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

I do miss the threat of..

a SS that just knocks the sh-t!!! out of WR’s. I would be real happy if we had a SS and FS that did that. I love to see opposing WR’s scared as hell to catch the ball due to a missile coming straight at them when they are vulnerable.

right on...

i was thinking of him when i was typing that. I think Afalava has that potential as well, he just needs more time to develope.

How much longer can we wait for 6th round picks to develop into players they cannot become

each year we use our first pick or spend our money on defensive line. Using a 3rd round pick on a safety (KAM!!) would be their most significant investment in the secondary in a long time. On the other hand, we JUST used our 3rd rounder last year on Pool Boy Jaron Gilbert, in addition to Dan Bazuins of the past.

I cannot be the only one who notices that as Mike Brown’s play declined and he slowly disappeared this team’s defense declined and slowly disappeared. Muhs and #85 were talking smack about how the Bears D is no longer imposing, not intimidating. Kam Chancellor ends that and will cause plenty of turnovers and turnover opportunities.

While our DLine is decent, our secondary is SOFT.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2010 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

He is much more then just a big hitter

His size and athleticism will allow him to compete for the ball in the air. Either deflections or picks this guy has a knack for the ball.

We may have plenty of Safeties both strong and free. But they are all garbage. Maybe AFlava has potential. Kevin Payne was a huge disappointment last year. He proved incapable of winning the job over the other bums in our secondary. Strong Safety of Free Saftey Kam Chancellor starts at either position on day 1 in training camp. That is how much of an upgrade he will be. We need both a free safety and a strong safety so sign somebody like Antrelle Rolle and then put Chancellor in at strong safety.

Anything around a 4.6 is decent NFL speed, ala emmitt smith and jerry rice and Chancellor is a more imposing physical force + all that speed.

by No It All on Mar 4, 2010 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

Very true.

I love that he is a big hitter. Our secondary was soft last year, no doubt about it. I do like KP at SS. I think your man Kam might have the instincts to play faster than his combine…suited up speed. The main thing I really want no matter who is at both safety positions is…Big Hitters who can cover WR’s. Some guys just know how to time sh-t..right time..right place. I think he will be a very good safety in the NFL even if we don’t end up with him.

And who’s to say that we wouldn’t move him to WR. It definitely wouldn’t be the first (or second) time that we’ve done that recently.
