if the bears can nab Peppers or Kampman (or both in a perfect world)
does that make Alex Brown tradable? His trade value should be a late 1st/high 2nd round pick.
You can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes.
maybe we could trade him for Wes Welker?

true. a player for player swap makes sense as well.
but I don’t think NE would ever trade Welker. That offense wasn’t in sync when he wasn’t on the field. But I don’t think trading Moss isn’t out of the question.

I was joshin'!
I thought it was you that hated all the “trade xxx for Welker” talk.

i do
I think he benefits from the system/QB. other than that, I’d rather see them trade for defense.

not only that
(realizing this was a joke by smudgers) but Welker hurt his ACL (?) LATE in the season, and may not even be ready to play when the season begins

welker blew out both his ACL and MCL
He won’t ever be the same player again, most likely. Sad to say.

that's right
i forgot, freak accident, and yes, he’ll never be able to cut like he used to

Welker would be ideal in Martz's system...
I’ve liked Welker for a while now, the guy is truely a team player. He’s probably the only Patriot I actually like.
I don't like any Patriots...
but I would learn to like Welker if he came here.
Walter Payton lives on!!!
if we pick up both...
wouldn’t alex brown still get playing time?
its not like pepper and kampan will be on the field 100% of the time
Brown would spell them occasionally.
Do or do not there is not try-Master Yoda
That honor would go to Mark Anderson
who I believe could benefit the most from a resurgent D-line.

I will make a bold prediction and say...
if Anderson is with us next season, he will have his best season per playing time. Well, I don’t know if that is really bold?

You'd be lucky to get a 3rd for Alex Brown

you don't think a late round team would bite on Brown?
even though that rhymed, it just doesn’t sound right.

Brown will be kept or cut. He has no trade value.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s an excellent player. But at $5mm/year, and pretty consistent production of only 6 sacks per year, he’s overpaid. (His career sack totals by year are: 2.5; 5.5; 6; 6; 7; 4.5; 6; 6). Safe bet is that if they sign Peppers, they release Brown soon after to free up cash. Someone else will sign him and he’ll continue to be productive. But no one will want him at $5mm, let alone if they have to give up a draft pick too.

Brown will be a starting DE next year
he’s solid… nothing spectacular, but he’s a good football player
by Lester A. Wiltfong Jr. on Mar 3, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions
Agreed, and my comment did not suggest otherwise.
As I said: “Someone else will sign him and he’ll continue to be productive.”
But the question is whether he has any trade value. People earlier in the thread said late 1st or 2d round value. The guy above me said lucky to get a 3d. Starting DE or not, I’m saying you’d be lucky to get ANY draft pick for him because he’s overpaid. Why would a team trade for him if they know the Bears will cut him, and then they can just sign the guy for less money and without giving up a pick?

Mark my words
Getting rid of Greg Olsen would be a HUGE mistake. He’s young. He’s talented. He’s getting better. And our QB likes him. If we get rid of him, there will be a lot of regrets.
by ClawsClawsClaws on Mar 3, 2010 7:52 AM CST reply actions 1 recs
Agreed.
Releasing a first round pick because your new o-coordinator doesn’t like his position is ludicrous. Martz has enough brains to know that Olsen is one of our best weapons. If he stubbornly refuses to use him, which I don’t expect, then you get rid of the o-coordinator before you get rid of the player.
by Orval Overall on Mar 3, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions
Agreed
If he is traded people will be complaining for years to come that we let such a good player walk out the door. Adapt to your talent Martz, don’t put on blinders and think thickheadly that your way is the only way.

My biggest prayer for FA this year is
that when i wake up in the AM of FA, i dont log into my Bears websites and see the Bears signed “XXXXXX” and i go “who?” (see: Frank Omiyale, last year)

Might want to sleep thru Friday
But I wouldn’t be too upset if we picked up some b-grade talent on Friday for depth/competition, esp. for Oline. I’m less worried about the names themselves, though, than hearing the words “will be moved to a different position.” Optimist that I am, I’ve already got the whisky ready for that article.

Get rid of Olsen
Somehow he’s still being hyped. He’s also easily replaced by Kellen Davis.
Also, Welker destroyed his knee at the end of last season. We do not want Welker.
I don't understand
“hyped”
he’s a first round pick, who has performed fantastically as a pass catching tight end, his blocking was suspect… but known, when he was drafted.
his blocking is getting better, he gets off jams well, and other than early season shakes because he got crushed by Clark (steelers) he did fine, there’s really only one Antonio Gates and one Tony Gonzalez, Olsen isn’t a huge step down in talent from them

Agreed and Agreed.
Celery, I don’t quite understand this assertion: “He’s also easily replaced by Kellen Davis.” What’s your evidence for that?
by ClawsClawsClaws on Mar 3, 2010 10:01 AM CST up reply actions
not only that
Kellen Davis is massive, and slow… I like the guy, but he’s not even molded remotely the same as Olsen… so easily replaced is incorrect. it’s two different playing styles

Kellen Davis can't replace him
Fortunately, I think the lack of importance of a tight end in Martz’s system means that it doesn’t matter if he’s replaced efficiently or not.
Just a sad day in Chicago
if we let Olsen go before his prime

That the cards are interested because I like Boldin and have wanted him since last although I think I had him overrated last year. Knowin the bears we will trade him for Rolle even though they are releasing him! But I think a good WR gets you further than a good TE that can’t block.

I'd rather have Boldin than Olsen
Sorry, but a pass-catching TE is easier to come by than a tough WR who catches everything.

Which is why they won't trade us Boldin for Olsen.
That’s a fantasy.

There would have to be another piece for it to happen
The Cards are a little more willing to deal him for less, cause of the emergence of Doucet and Breaston.

I agree, propheteer
Boldin showed me he was tough and that is a Bears trait. Yeah, it means a lot to me.

Man this saddens me
Him doing this quietly atests to his character. He has always seemed to me to be a hard-working type who just goes into work and does his thing. He can be a great player in this league and I don’t think moving up one round is really worth it. The Bears and us fans will regret this trade for years to come. Mark it down. Unless we get some other-worldly player.
by GallopingGhost on Mar 3, 2010 11:57 AM CST up reply actions
If he goes to New England he will still be better than here
Why? Because they will actually ADJUST to him. If we trade him it just shows our staff doesn’t know how to coach.
2009 anybody?
After the semi-disappointment that was his last season – too much hype and not enough production – I just don’t think that he is ever going to be the guy that we all were hoping. I say take the trade or the 2nd – we already have a proven veteran and a development project at TE. In other news, my enter key is a bit too close to that apostrophe for this early in my day.
by SouthSidePolack on Mar 3, 2010 11:32 AM CST up reply actions
dez clark
is going to retire soon. the man’s old.
You are right, Kellen Davis is a developmental project at TE. That means if Dez retires next year or gets hurt this year, we have no proven TE’s. Which means we will be searching for a decent pass catching tight end.
Olsen is a rare talent, and I hope he doesn’t get traded. I’ve always believed in terms of trades, don’t fill a hole if you are going to make a bigger one in the process.
Dont do it!
The Bears would be dumb to let Olsen go, Just work on his blocking more. Get the guy some plays he is one of our young stars. He will leave and shoot us in the foot like Benson, and Thomas has.Do not trade Mr Olsen.
Olsen will flourish.......
Somewhere else just like Benson, Gauge, Harris, T. Jones, etc. Our coaches constantly prove over and over that they cannot develop anybody or adjust to best use their ability (see Cutler 2009). There is no way our young receiving corp, as much as I see a HUGE upside with them, gets the numbers they posted if Olsen didn’t constantly draw double coverage. Not the best blocker, but he can hold on in clutch situations knowing a huge hit is coming. I’ve been reading for over a year and had to set up an account to say something on this. Love the thought of Boldin in Navy blue, but trading Olsen will be detrimental. It’s like the idiots who say get rid of Forte. He was banged up last year behind arguably the worst o-line in the NFL and is possibly the best pass catching rb in the league. And we have Martz coming in who loves to pass to the rb. Focus on improving the negatives, not the eliminating the few positives! Great website and insight here at WCG.
Droppopotamus
Could be great..could be terrible..
depending on who we would get. If we get some bs…then it would be one of the worst let goes I can remember..even worse than Chris Harris.
Walter Payton lives on!!!
over rated
the guy is soft and dropped a lot of balls last year and cant i repeat cant block nor does he fit martzs system.. rumor has it they are targeting manu from san diego great blocker a beast and can catch.. if the trade is of equal value or a second rounder its buh bye goldilocks!!
So instead of adapting the offense to fit the players you have.
Martz would rather get rid of Olsen, who was a good target for Cutler last year and bring in another lineman to replace him?
Thats the difference between good coaches and bad ones. Look at Ken Whisenhunt, he wanted to have a Steelers style offense [run the ball] when he came to Arizona, but he adapted and Warner had 3 great years to end his career.
Martz would rather do what got him fired from the Lions and the 49ers.
