Chicago Bears Free Agency Open Thread

New tight end Brandon Manumaleuna is wrapped up.  Now what about Greg Olsen?  Is it a foregone conclusion he'll be traded?  Or will Mike Martz work his magic with him?

Has Julius Peppers signed yet?  Get that man locked up JA!

What about Chester Taylor?  Would Taylor beat out Matt Forte?  Would they split carries 50/50?

Any news on a free safety?

Free Agency is heating up!

BradBiggs :

With @Jay_Glazer reporting Peppers & Taylor are getting physicals, deals have to be imminent. They're not going to take physicals and watch

Star-divide

From The Sporting News reporting on a story from Sirius NFL Radio:

A source told the network that the Bears have a "pretty good offer" on the table for Peppers, and chances are they won't let him leave the Windy City without a whole lot of cash.

From Neil Hayes:

A press conference announcing the signings of Peppers, Taylor and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna is expected to be held at Halas Hall later this afternoon.

The source said that although the Patriots and Eagles have also made offers for Peppers, the deal the Bears are offering is worth millions more per season and it would be a huge upset if Peppers left Halas Hall, where he is visiting today, without signing what is expected to be a six-year contract with approximately $12 million per year with the first three years guaranteed.

The source said the Eagles and Pats are offering deals that are closer to $10 million per year.

Also it looks as if Antrel Rolle is going elsewhere . The Giants , Cards and Fins are evidently his final three teams . So it looks like its down to Ryan Clark , Darren Sharper and OJ .

Too many peeps concerned with the TE postion here.

You guys need to understand that Brandon Manumaleuna will likely replace FB Jason McKie’s roster spot in Mike Martz’s offense.

It's not like we used McKie that much anyway.

I see Olsen staying, I don’t think we’d get the value we’d want for him anyway.

Just call me Mr. 3000.

by Ditkavsworld on Mar 5, 2010 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

what value do we want for him?

Honest question. If we traded him for a draft pick (ignoring any player-for-player trades right now), what would be an acceptable value to get in return?

Third rounder?
Low 2nd rounder?
Mid 2nd rounder?
High 2nd rounder?

by JohnPaul on Mar 5, 2010 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

If someone's offering a 2nd round pick... take it and run.

Olsen’s not a special player. He’s very replacable. There are 10-12 TEs in this league better than Olsen.

You take as high

as you can get, but I would think a mid to high draft pick. He was a 1st round pick of ours and was in the top ten TE’s last year with a lot of potential.

That’s what it’d take for me not be be highly annoyed.

by Jacob Hayes on Mar 5, 2010 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

That would be ideal,

they might just do it if they want him bad enough. I think with Jerry picking and as deep as this draft is supposed to be. I would rather they took a late 2nd and maybe a 3rd or a 4th.

by Fridge72 on Mar 5, 2010 12:39 PM CST up reply actions

no way that will happen

TE doesn’t play a big enough role in the Patriots scheme for them to trade away a 1st. You might get them to bite with one of their 3 second rounders though.

by JohnPaul on Mar 5, 2010 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

They would have to give up a higher 2nd

at the least. I don’t think it would really be a problem for them either. They have three 2nd rounders I think.

by Fridge72 on Mar 5, 2010 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

I woouldn't mind Olsen and a 4th rounder for the Pats 1st...

That looks like a pretty fair trade to me. Then we can use that 1st to either draft a stud OL or to pry Marshall from the Broncos. Man I don’t know if I would be able to handle all of that in one offseason though lol

Not really...

It’s all about $$$$$$$. You guys are looking at the surface.

Olsen’s heading into free agency, and in Martz’s offense his production will likely drop, which will hurt his value as a free agent, and thus reduce the size of the contract he’ll sign.

It’s Olsen who wants to be traded… not Martz kicking him to the curb.

Agreed,

Can’t remember Martz using a FB much at all. Manumaleuna takes McKie’s spot and plays like an extra tackle. Not hard to imagine Olsen playing at the same time in an H-Back position that could split out wide to be a third or fourth receiver.

I like it and think it has a lot of potential. Also Forte and Taylor could make for some great 2-back sets.

David Haugh on NFLN

will repost this for those he did not see at the end of the other thread

- Looks like they will sign taylor and peppers soon being so aggressive. taylor will compete for starting job at least get more carries

- needed to restore the pass rush for their tampa 2

- NFLN host asks why Bears staying with cover 2 when the rest of the NFL is moving away from it. Haugh replies that the Bears are very committed to the cover 2. Peppers and a FS can do that or thats what Lovie hopes. Not to mention that the Bears do not play alot of cover 2 as people think. In 06 they played more cover 3 and 1 than anything else (according to haugh)

- Recent years they would reward their own players. But with they have no draft picks and need to make a splash and ownership allowed that to happen to win now. They saw rewarding their own was not working so they needed to be more proactive

- The Bears are targeting FS once taylor and peppers are/IF signed. They will monitor rolle but also looking at clark

- Not of O line depth and thats why the Bears looked at the other position. They are hoping for the guys they have now to improve though

- taylor will be competing for carries and starting job.

impact on Forte?

If they sign Taylor, is this good or bad for Forte (and the team)? I can see it going a couple of different ways. Forte could see this as a threat to him and spiral downwards. Or he could see it as competition and have it motivate him to take his game to a higher level.

On the positive side, if Forte is indeed our future franchise RB then having someone good to split carries with him is good news in terms of extending his career. On the negative, if it is true Taylor is looking for $8m a year, is it the best use of our money to pay a part-time RB that kind of salary?

60/40?

That would be my guess how things would end up getting split up for on-the-field time. Forte is still on his rookie contract (4yr/$3.8mil) so its not like we are breaking the bank on RBs.

by Steve Ronkowski on Mar 5, 2010 12:36 PM CST up reply actions

RB?

I just don’t understand why the front office thinks RB is such a need. Forte should flourish under Martz. I understand they want a backup for Matt but I think they could go a cheaper route and use that money towards a FS. Why not go after someone like Willie Parker? He’s younger and probably cheaper that CT. That would have allowed the brass to make a serious push for a Rolle or Clark.

Maybe I’m wrong, I just never saw RB as being a position we had to fill.

So 4 years, $12.5m. And that includes $7m in year one.

So unless I’m missing something, that means we would only be paying him $5.5m for the final 3 years of his contract? Less than $2m per year, eh? Wow. (If the new CBA goes back to including a salary cap, that could be a very attractive contract for us.)

makes sense

take advantage of this year being uncapped by front-loading contracts. Of course, the negative side of that is if a guy doesn’t work out for whatever reason, you are “out” a lot more money than you otherwise would be.

So the Bears are supposed to have $25 million to spend this year...

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but the Bears have around $6 million more to spend (Peppers $12 million + Taylor $7 million = $19 million) on a FS, enough to make an offer to Otogwe/Rolle/Clark (preferably in that order IMO)… Man I can’t decide which offseason had me more excited, the Peppers/Taylor offseason or the Sutler one. The Bears biggest Free Agent signings I can remember,

As long as I have been watching football I never remember a FA season like this. If they take care of DE, FS, and RB through FA. Then they can really help out the O-line with the draft. Looks like a great off-season to me.

Have to give Jerry Angelo some credit too. Two off-seasons in a row. Last year the biggest trade with Cutler and this years Free Agency, he has definitely been working it two years in a row.

“I’m in L.A. right now, and I turn on the Internet to see what’s going on, what the organization is doing, and to me it looks like we’re making sweet moves right now. I’m excited about everything right now.” Now we just need to get him to hang out with us on WCG…

I don't care

if we get Owen Wilson as long as he has coverage skills he’s an upgrade.

Not too sure about his skills...

He was cut in consecutive years by teams (the Raiders and the Dolphins) that signed him to fairly large contracts, no thank you. The Bears should be focusing their efforts on the big 4 FS’s Otogwe/Rolle/Clark/Sharper

We won't even have to pay him next year

if there is a walkout. We’ll take the hit in 2012.

It sounds like it is all done and is going to happen, but something hasn't happened yet.

league approval

According to Clayton on ESPN.com, the contract is done and they are waiting for the league and the NFLPA to approve the wording of it before they make the announcement.
