Chicago Bears Sign RB Chester Taylor

Wcg_thumb_hot_mediumSwitching teams in the NFC North, Chester Taylor has signed a contract with the Chicago Bears, per this article.

Taylor agreed to a $12.5 million, four-year contract with $7 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. That's not far off the figures of $14 million in total value and $8 million guaranteed that a league source said the veteran back was gunning for last night.

A combination of Forte and Taylor in the backfield gives the Bears a legitimate 1-2 punch. Add a couple offensive lineman and our offense could be very scary.

More information after the jump...

Contract details: Four years, 12.5 million. 7 million guaranteed year one.

Taylor's career stats (via wikipedia):

We have a plethora of RB's, so who's out? Will we see a Running Back tandem of Forte / Taylor / Bell? Are Peterson, Wolfe and Jones on their way out? What are your thoughts?

And get ready, Chicago: Julius Peppers is next. Adam Schefter (twitter)

Also, 670 the Score is mentioning that Halas Hall is abuzz and more moves are in the works that will make draft day much more exciting. Of couse, this is all speculation until something happens, but it does leave me intrigued.

That really would be awesome

with everything else. Then we would really be able to focus on the trenches with the draft picks that we have. We will still be able to get a lot of value at our spots too. Especially if they end up trading Olsen for picks.

What is everyones thoughts on Olson? Should we trade him? I think he has a ton of talent and could be a good player but if he doesnt fit into martz’s system why force it. You can always pick up a decent tight end in the later rounds of the draft….

dumb questions alert

but couldn’t Martz use Olsen like Dallas Clarke is used in Indy? Olsen would seem to have the speed and pass catching ability where he could essentially replace a WR, no?

Olsen wasn't even the best TE in his draft class.

Zach Miller (2nd round) and Celek (5th round) are both better than Olsen.

by boondock_saint812 on Mar 5, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

And I think you're wrong on both...

Olsen had either a better year than both depending on what stats you want to favor, or almost dead similar.

The problem is that the vast majority of those players you mentioned have anywhere from 6 to 10 years of experience on Olsen. Experience that matters, specially when for the first year or two he wasn’t getting a lot of on the field experience.

I like Olsen as much as most of those guys for where he is at in his career, and there are only a few from that list I’d rather have if there were no other cost to swapping them out.

Celek/Z.Miller/Finley all have the skills and youth that I would take them over Olsen, but no matter how good Tony Gonzales is I can’t rank him over Olsen as a player because he is basically used up. Antonio Gates is another who while a great player, is primarily a speed guy and speed usually is the first thing to go in a 30 year old player.

We’ve had this argument before though, you don’t take age into consideration when it comes to player value. I do, specially when a player has the physical qualities needed and has improved year by year.

It’s all very well projecting ahead, but that doesn’t help the here and now. Can we be certain Olsen will blossom into what we were hoping he would be this year? No. He could well do, but weighing up potential versus actual productivity is looking at two different things. The former doesn’t help when the game or season is on the line and we need someone to step up to make the play – and in that, sadly, Olsen was found wanting this season.

That he was the number 10 TE in the league, we must have different definitions.

Cutler tossed the ball to Olsen as his go-to guy, expecting him to fight for it. That didn’t really happen as far as I could see. That, plus the fact that he’s a non-entity on the line, means that he wasn’t nearly as productive as most of us would have liked him to have been.

However, I don’t want to ruin your bromance on Olsen and my sense of self-worth isn’t defined by whether or not other fans agree with me as to where he is on the pecking list, so have it your way: he’s an absolute god and ever so dreamy to boot.

If Martz, unlike Ron Turner, can use him to create mismatches then we’ll all be happy.

Still, there is reason to be optimstic. Even without getting a FS (and I hope we still do), there is no way the D isn’t much better this year than last. Just Peppers plus getting Urlacher back makes such a difference.

Now the issue becomes offense. Specifically, O-line. And since we aren’t going to find help there via FA, it’s either the draft or working out some sort of trade. A savy veteran WR would be nice too, but improving the line is a much higher priority.

All I have to say is WOW

Tonight is worthy of going out in town and having a Hefeveisen, maybe a couple shits of tequila for the news about Peppers too. There will be dancing in the streets.

Oh yes, there will be dancing in the streets of Germany tonight.

Well, Martz's scheme is not FB friendly

And It feels wrong to put Mckie in there. I like the idea of Lance Louis being the FB though.

Nice to see all the glee over the sigings.

If, and it’s a big if, the players they sign play as well as in the past next season will be interesting. But an often unmotivated DE (sound like Tommie?), a 30 year old RB and a blocking TE isn’t exciting me yet. I hope they all live up to expectations, but the Redskins thought they could win big after signing all the top FAs the last couple of years. How’s that working out for them?

A good get

CTaylor should be a good fit in Martz’s offense

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

Chester will be 31 at the start of the season

I have noting against the guy, and live in St. Paul MN so have watched him lpay. He’s a solid back and a hardworker. Kind of reminds me of Thomas Jones. But he will be 31 next September. The statistics on RB’s over 30 are pretty dreadful. Is he going to drop off?
