Post- Presser Open Thread: Damn It Feels Good To Be A Bears Fan

While watching the Chicago Bears press conference, a few things could be noted:

- Jerry Angelo looked very tired, and you could tell the finalization of Peppers' contract right before the press conference started was tough.

- Lovie Smith looked happy; he smiled more than we've seen him smile in a while.  Also mentioned Tommie Harris a few times when talking about Julius Peppers.

- Peppers looked like a kid in the candy store.  Very youthful looking, and a bit awkward answering questions.  You can tell he is new at this free agency thing.

-  Brandon Manumaleuna is huge.  He seems very humble, and constantly referred to helping the team  Sealing off the blind spot and protecting the QB.

Your thoughts?

I owe JA a HUGE apology

I been saying for months he couldn’t find his arse with both hands. I stand corrected.

Splish.. Splash

It looks great today. However, part of me wishes that it was 5 years ago – when so many of the people we will be counting on were younger and Martz/Smith/etc hadn’t been shown as having fallable systems. I’m still worried about the O-line, but Manu helps. However, for now, I’m happy swilling my kool-aid, even if I put a couple shots of whiskey in it. 2010 is do or die.

Not sure if anyone one else mentioned this...

But the Ravens traded their 3rd and 4th round picks to the Cardinals for Boldin and a 5th rounder

These move could also prove to be difference makers in the future. Carolina lost its franchise player and would make Chicago look better if Cowher had to make a decision. The Viking are weak at the RB position and if AP doesn’t correct his fumbling problem, he will cost the Vikings more games similar to that last game against the Bears.

Not sure but I bet the receivers and Cutler have been working out together the whole off season. It would be sweet if the receivers went to work out with Fitz. Guys who worked out in his off season camp last year came out like gang busters.

Just snooped around Pride of Detroit, Acme Packing Co., and Daily Norseman....

Pride of Detroit: They think they got alot better with Burleson. Is he really anything more than mediocre? I mean look at the receivers they’ve had over the last 10 years, he’s no better than any of them. They also signed KVB. I think this is a good signing, and I will be scared of the DL if the do end up drafting Ndamakong Suh. That would be a nice looking line.

Acme Packing Company is under a panic attack. They have nothing for OT’s and they are gonna play Allen and Peppers 4 games a year. I didnt think it was possible, but Aaron Rodgers might get hit around even more than last year. haha

Daily Norseman: They are upset about saying goodbye to Chester. They also are afraid of Peppers after what he did to them last year. They are looking to get Westbrook. At first, I thought I was scared. But really? How much would he play? I mean its not that big of a difference between AP/CT vs. AP/Westbrook. And we all know he would get hurt.

Nice work snoopin’. Burleson is a non factor, he never was and never will be. idk how he warrants $11 mil or is any kind of prize. Boldin was the guy to go out and get. He is a beast and a difference maker. Burleson is fodder.
Westbrook is one hit away from being punch drunk. I think he’s always been a great back and a class act on and off the field, I just fear for his safety.
Chester Taylor I really like because being at Minn behind AD added years to his body. I think Martz will do great things with the offense to keep the D’s on their heels.
I thing the Lions will be much better this year. If nothing else who ever plays them will know they been in a fight.
I am not so sure Favre will want to come back to have to face this division again. He had a real beat down vs. the Saints last year, he will not be forgetting those hits for along time.

Also....

Worthy of note is that while the Bears owners/management have actively gone above and beyond our typical expectations, and actually added to the team, our two biggest rivals have taken definite losses giveing us a little more of a boost.

The Pack outright lost Kampman which on last year’s change of scheme isn’t really big, but lets face it, he was and has the potential to an impact player at least – and he’s gone from the division.

The Viqueens were an addition by subtraction because they lost CT, our signing him was absolute gravy on that meal. They’re also deeply invested in the annual Brett Favre drama now… LoL.. Have fun with that debacle.

I personally think that bringing Manu and Taylor in make a difference for our offense. Olsen is obviously the pass catching TE. Manu obviously the blocking TE, but if you put two TEs out there, Forte and Taylor in the backfield and whichever receiver has stepped up by that time on the field at once, Cutler has a lot of options. Both backs are good receivers and certainly capable blockers. While Manu is primarily the blocker, he can still catch passes. Olsen can get deep into routes with good speed, so you can put three to five layers of receivers out there for Cutler to check down if necessary.

Certainly has potential – now… a little increase in O-Line respectability and it could really be interesting!!

Bears

The Bears have done more in the past 2 offseasons then they have the previous 27 of my life. It’s pretty great. Peppers should help that shitty 3rd down defense the Bears have been running out there the past couple seasons. Hopefully, Taylor will be the starting RB and Manu helps out to create some running lanes for him.

I say we just go ahead

and call today a waste of time and money. Because we have enough draft picks and talent to be a heck of a lot better next year. We’ll have another year of core-experience together and some more heart, because they’ll be playing to keep the entire staff’s jobs. At least Cutler will be throwing to a group of 3 WRs who have less than 9 years pro experience. And yes, I agree, today is a waste because they haven’t addressed the O-line and safety positions.

I was just getting ready to respond..so many things to say.

Entirely different off-season. Last year was one piece to the puzzle, even with the high expectations of the Cutler aquisition, it was going to be a building year no matter what. We are now adding the key pieces to take it to a whole new level. This year we should have expectations of winning our division. I think with a couple more moves, there is no reason we shouldn’t. Our young WR’s have big boy experience now, we know what we have with our OL and what needs fixed, and we now have a player that truly makes the type of D we run work. Plus, the signing of CT gives us exactly what we need in our run game and a big blocking TE was just added to solve part of what we didn’t have last season as well, Blocking. I couldn’t stand JA, imo Martz could out coach him in his sleep. We are a FS and an OG away from being in the postion to make a true run at the SB imo. As long as we stay pretty healthy, the comparison between expectations from this year to last is a mile apart. One superstar will not make a SB team, but many superstars in the right position of need…Will!!

Very good assessment Dane.

I think Big Boy is sealing off the edge and blocking for our RB’s!! It seemed like Peppers really wanted to come here, I love that. He could have gotten just as much or maybe even more money somewhere else, but he chose us…hell yeah. I am just as stoked to see CT get signed, you know I have been pushing to get him ever since the season ended. He will be a beast for us. I couldn’t have even imagined they would go above and beyond to make us better, it really hasn’t been Chicago’s style in the past to go through FA and spend money. I don’t think they are done yet, but I am the happiest I have been since the ’85 SB season. Cool thing is..with technology and this site, everything is as real time as it gets…Fricken Awesome!!!

If you notice the Bears are guarenteeing a lot of money this year

Because there is no salary cap and the players get paid making it attractive for them to come here and if the CBA gets signed for next season the Bears hopefully won’t be over the salary cap

by BEARSFAN19 on Mar 5, 2010 10:34 PM CST reply actions

Not so fast.

I wrote a post on this a while back (link).

Under the somewhat recent rule change by the NFL, guaranteed money prorates over the course of the players contract. Meaning teams can no longer front load a contract with guaranteed money to take advantage of lot of cap space that they have in a certain year (or a year without a cap).

So, if the numbers I posted above are correct (6yrs – $91.5m – $42m gtd):

$42m / 6yrs = $7m per year

Meaning, $7m + his base salary + any bonuses/incentives that he hits would = the cap hit EVERY year over the duration of his contract.

Another interesting thing to note (from this post at BRB):

Myth #6—Teams should just sign players to front-loaded deals now to take advantage of the uncapped year.

This would be a good plan if it weren’t nearly impossible. Under the CBA, any salary decrease of greater than 50% from one year to the next becomes a signing bonus and is then spread out over the life of the deal. For example, if the Texans signed DeMeco Ryans to a deal with a $30M salary in 2010 and a $5M salary in 2011 (capped), that $25M difference would become a signing bonus and be prorated over the life of the deal. I suppose a team could always roll the dice and bet on that rule being abrogated in the new CBA, but I don’t see it happening.

-------

by David Taylor on Mar 6, 2010 6:59 AM CST up reply actions

By that token...

50% is fine and doesn’t become a signing bonus. So theoretically they could pay him 18 million this year, 10 million next year, and 5 million a year the year after or some other confluence of numbers to make his “cap” hit fairly massive this year when it doesn’t matter, fairly big the year after, and below average on the years after.

Poor Saints – they are one and done. The road to the SB is going thru chicago.

Ok now that i have calmed down a bit – the game is still won or lost in the trenches – the def line looks good – hopefully tommie can stay healthy & urlacher can come back – but the off line is still a concern. You can have an AD back there but he is going nowhere without a good offensive line. Their next priority is to bring in some good off linemen

I still cant believe that Peppers is now a Bear. Plus signing Taylor now to make this all more perfect all we need is a FS. If we can pick up Clark or Atogwe I’d be estatic. Then on draft day we can look at some o line men.

by chigrl on Mar 6, 2010 2:16 AM CST reply actions

A couple important things to note about the Peppers signing:

- You can tell the front office has changed their mentality quite a bit in the past few years. In just two seasons, the franchise has gone from being a run-first team with without a reputation for big moves into one that traded for Jay Cutler and made a serious run at Peppers from the start.

- You can bet that the uncapped year will have an impact on contract negotiations.

- If Peppers plays like…well, one would expect to play after receiving a new contract…you know the rest.

- Peppers is 30 at the start of his deal and will be 36 when it expires, so there’s no time to waste.

- Despite the aforementioned risks, this was a necessary and educated gamble. There needed to be a shakeup after three straight roughly .500 seasons and no playoff appearances.

- By the way, note that Peppers contract, on average, pays the second highest team salary behind the Cutler contract extension (Even if my memory is not correct in terms of place, Cutler’s extension is still definitely higher). That is NOT coincidental.

by V. Money on Mar 6, 2010 7:51 AM CST reply actions

About the other signings...

- Commence the Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson jokes in 3, 2, 1…

- Wait a minute, Orlando Pace, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Brandon Manumaleuna…what is with the Bears and their thing for ex-Rams? I can understand Manu and Mike Martz, but the first two guys were signed before he came along.

by EmmCeee on Mar 6, 2010 11:16 AM CST up reply actions

Anyone take notice that....

Taylor seemed to express that he was going to be the “Marshall Faulk” in this offense and that he had a chance to start his first year in Minnesota, but didn’t get to see what he could follow that with, so he was looking for that chance?

Maybe I was reading too much into the words, but it felt to me like he seemed prettty confident that he was going to be the starter. Maybe that is just confidence. But I wonder if he got that feeling from Smith, Martz or Angelo…….

You and I disagree on Forte, but

I am fine with bringing Taylor in to fight for the starting job. Regardless of who starts, both will get plenty of touches as both fit Martz’s offense well.

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

Agreed.....

I think this will make for a fine 1-2 punch.

Kudos to Bears ownership

They respect their fans by spending the $ needed to make Da Bears a serious contender in 2010

He’s always open. He catches a lot of balls. He’s un-guardable, no matter how old he is
