So what happens to Dez?
Now that the Bears signed Brandon Manumaleuna, what happens to Desmond Clark. He was injured for a large portion of the season last year, and he isn't getting any younger. The Bears did carry three tight ends last year, Greg Olson, Clark, and Kellen Davis. Right now, they'll be carrying four tight ends this year, unless they 1) release one of them or 2) trade one of them away.
Mike Martz mostly uses his tight ends as another blocker, and Olsen is not a very good blocker. There has been some speculations that the Bears will listen to other teams offers for Greg Olsen. And there has been some speculations that the Bears might release Dez Clark.
I like Clark. I think he's a class act, and though he didn't like the Bears decision to give Olsen the starting job before the season started, without giving Dez a chance to compete for the starting spot, he didn't complain. He's a decent blocker and a decent receiver. What's more, I think you could say that he is one of the veteran leaders in the Bear's young offense. I hope the Bears do keep him because Clark has done a lot for this organization.
What do you think will happen? Post your thoughts below and say what you think will happen to Dez and the other tight ends this season.

I agree with you partially
he is a team leader, and a class act. But personally, Id rather have Olsen then him. Unless he wants to be the #3 TE, I think we need to trade him. If we trade Olsen, we will all be stabbing ourselves in the foot for the next 10 years. The guy is good. Bears havent had a TE with his skill set since some guy named Ditka. I love Desmond Clark, but I think he has 1, maybe 2 decent years left in him where Olsen has 6+ good/great years to come in my opinion.
I'd also rather have Olsen.
But it sounds like Dez would be better in the system than Greg. Plus, he has more value in the trade market.

But seriously...
Are we going to get rid of one of our players with most potential to fit a system that might not even be here next year? Im sure once Martz sees him in Training Camp, his mind will click with ideas of Olsen vs. LB’s all-day. And one more reason to keep him around is Mike Tice. Let Mike Tice work with him on his blocking. I know he won’t become an amazing blocking TE, but he will improve his blocking and maybe become tolerable. From what I hear Tice is a hell of a teacher to offensive lineman. Keep him around, or like I said, we will be shooting ourselves in the foot.
Alright article
but you should replace Stevens with Kellen Davis.

It's alright though
This is coming from the guy who thought Darrell and Brian Dawkins were the same guy. Though I hope if Sharper is brought in he can play a role similiar to what BRIAN did in Denver…but that’s for another thread altogether.

ahh sorry about that
Thinking about the Cubs. Head was somewhere else there.

We had 4 tight ends for awhile last year with Gaines.
I think the one that needs to worry might be Jason Mckie. Plus with all the pressure on this coaching staff Martz might want to dig deep into that Air Coryell playbook and see how he did with that halfway decent tightend he used back in the day. I think his name was Winslow. So there is a place for a tightend with a reciever skill set in this offense. He just needs to embrace it a little..
i think this is more of a FB replacement
i still suspect we might ax one TE, probably clark, but i think it is also likely that manumaleuna essentially replaces mckie. we have 2 real RBs and no more ron turner, so the FB’s main role is to block…why not just run 2 TEs, and have one be a receiver (olsen) and one replace the FB (manumaleuna) as, essentially, and extra lineman? i think that’s what will happen, with one of the TEs shifted out in 3 WR or 2 RB sets.
can't carry
olsen, clark davis and Manumaleuna. thats too many, clark is probably the best overall tight end on the team, which is pathetic considering what olsen is supossed to be.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
Dez showed in the preseason, and the few times he was thrown the ball in the regular season that he still has incredible hands, and is very hard to bring down after the catch. Add to that his blocking ability, and he very well may be the perfect TE.
Thing is, Olsen does have a skill set that is leading us down the path of the next generation of TE. He has the speed and skill set of a WR, but in a TE’s body.
Manu will be the guy… he will be the blocking TE we need, and will be damn good at it. But that does leave what seems like one too many TEs on the roster. In the end, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we kept 4 on the roster, unless we can benefit (value-wise) from trading Olsen.
As you say the word on Des Clark is decent, not exactly a ringing endorsement
the Bears need better than decent, so unless they plan to trade Olsen, there really is no place for Clark anymore. Let him go.

I agree....
Unless Olsen get high trade value somewhere, Clark seems like the odd man out. Davis is a young big-body receiving TE that the Bears seem sure they can teach how to block. Manumaleuna is a supurb blocker that the Bears didn’t sign to release, and Olsen is a WR in a TEs body. Clark is sort of in the middle of the circle. Decent blocker, decent receiver, and excellent experience.
If the Bears don’t keep 4 TEs, I see Clark as the guy who slips off the roster.

Why not dump Kellen Davis?
Bad blocker
Average speed for a TE
good hands i’ll give him that
but he can’t block at all
if any doesn’t fit into Martz system it’s him
Do or do not there is not try-Master Yoda
Cause he's...
A young project who actually wasn’t a horrible blocker last season, did a great job of receiving in the red zone, and will develop nicely with Tice teaching him, Olsen to learn from as a receiving TE, and Manumaleuna to look up to as a blocker.
I love Dez, but I can’t see jettisoning a young guy with potential for an old guy who’s declining, even when that old guy is Dez…..

Link
Davis wasn’t good, but he was the best Pass blocking TE in Chicago last year, He was a better receiving TE than Clark, and he had a average run blocking rating. Link (pops).
Kellen has potential, and is also cheaper than Dez. Dez was a very good (and under-rated TE) for us for years, but age is catching up with him, and It might be time to clear the way for a guy like Kellen.

i haven't heard
a single person who analyzes the bears professionally categorizes olsen as anything above a bad blocker. so even if he wasn’t horrible, he needs to be more than that.
Huh??? Didn't you see his block on youtube?

There's been report that Olsen is seeking a trade.
Due to concern about his role on offense. That’s why I say he might get traded.

That was a while ago
and Martz has praised Olsen since then

No, he never seeked a trade.
But it sounds like he’s seeking one now.

a few days ago Olsen qondered aloud about his future with the Bears
since then Martz has complimented Olsen and nothing more has been said to my knowledge

check your math...
we have 5 TEs now
Dez, Olsen, Davis, Kevin Brock and Manumaleauna
My money is on a Greg Olsen trade on draft day to move up and snag an OL or FS whichever one has the best available at the position we get.
Also have too many RBs. do we go with 3 or 4? AP is gone for sure, so its either Wolfe or Jones or both. I’m pretty sure Bell has shown enough to be kept around.
Brock won't make it past cuts...
I see the Bears roling with 4 RBs. Taylor, Forte, Bell and Wolfe. Wolfe will stay because Martz will find a few plays designed for him, and because he’s a special teams baller.
