Steelers trade Holmes to Jets for 5th round pick

The Bears will likely use a 5th round pick in this year's draft on a WR... they could have just used it on Holmes. I hope to find out later, that the Bears at least inquired about Holmes. If not, then they've completely missed the boat.

From the Chicago Tribune

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets acquired wide receiver Santonio Holmes from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night for a fifth-round draft pick this month, according to a person familiar with the deal.

The person spoke with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams had yet to announce the trade.

Holmes, the 2009 Super Bowl MVP, gives quarterback Mark Sanchez another big-time target to throw to in an offense that already had Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, promising tight end Dustin Keller and recently signed running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

The jets

are looking pretty darn formidable this year. They’ll be a tough opponent for us.

I really never though this ....

…. guy lived up to his draft status . He had his best season last year with 79 catches , 1248 yards and 5 TD’s . Before that he was average at best , including their Super Bowl season in which he caught 52 catches and 972 yards with 8TD’s . He’s an average player with average numbers and I personally am glad we didn’t trade for him . He’s a thug with a checkered past and really I don’t consider this a missed opportunity . Our WR’s are young and full of talent and didn’t need Holmes bad influence on the field or in the locker room .

Also the Jets can have all the talent in the world , but getting them to play up to that talent is a different story . Cro is a first round bust , Bralyon is a first round bust and Holmes is soon to be labeled the same .

I hope the Jets win the AFC Conference championship this year

that being said… i’m beyond happpy somebody else picked him up, thus ending the “should we go for holmes…he’s not that big of a bad guy” discussion

Seriously?

Or is this sour grapes?

Calling Holmes a twit and a pothead I could agree with but not with thug. He also has a good rep in the locker room and on the field.

Most WR takes 3 years before the have their breakout seasons and his was last year. He performs in the clutch and especially in the big games. I don’t remember Steelers fans complaining about his play though some were worried about his love of weed.

Ryan seems to be having no problem getting his player playing to their potential. I think they are now the #1 choice for the AFC championship (barring injuries) and possibly the Super Bowl. It pains me to say that asI have been a Steelers fan for almost 40 years and I am not happy with this trade but that is the way I see it.

For the Steelers Org

it had to be the right move, early to nip these situations in the bud, regardless of who threw the glass, he’s had a couple of incidents, and with the Rothliswhatever bad press, it was time to send a message.

a move had to be made, it was Holmes or your Franchise QB.

the Bears are longstanding non-tolerant of players misgivings off the field, so it shouldnt come as any surprise why they didnt pursue somebody perceived in a bad light

The choking incident is one I missed so I will give you back the thug

He probably is just a rental but for a team that is close, a team looking to win it all this year, a 5th rounder for him is a steal.

I may be old but I... oh d*mn, I forgot what I was going to say.

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Apr 12, 2010 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions

It really depends on the make up of the team...

For us it really isn’t worth it specially knowing he’s going to be out the first four games of the year. If you don’t have a lot of young players you believe it, it could be worth it, but if you do it’s definitely not.

Why pay for a one year rental that you may not want your young guys learning from anyway that is going to enter near the half-way point of the year with zero chemistry with his QB.

Just bad for us, and honestly probably bad for the Jets with Sanchez.

Are you serious?

Santonio Holmes choked some woman unconscience in college, was charged was assault and battery on the mother of his kids, and that’s on top of general thug behavior like throwing drinks in some females face and getting high against the leagues drug policy.

I understand this is one of your players, or was one of your players anyway, but seriously a usually friendly thug is still a thug.

Yeah, I don't mind supporting your players when it comes to piddly or unsubstantiated things...

But a pattern is a pattern, and living in PA I can tell you this guy does get good press with the bad, but the Bears are a team that doesn’t really tolerate repeated issues even if they are later proven to be questionable.

See: Tank Johnson/Cedric Benson.

It’s just hard to give someone the benefit of the doubt when they have a history of similar actions.

I disagree with your assessment of him being average

Don’t disagree about the the thug thing, but the guyy was superbowl MVP and a very good year last year. The reason his numbers were less in prior years were that Hines Ward was the primary and it has been transitioning to him now. They were also more of a running team and he was still learning the system. All progressions on the way up and he could be a star. We should have taken the flier for the 5th rounder and see how he behaved for the years before doing any longer term deal. I think I would rather see him running routes than bennett or Hester that is for sure.

Just sayin'

The numbers Holmes put up last year, were his best. This is true. It’s also true that last year was the first time, maybe even in decades, that PITT. was a pass first (heavily!) team. Holmes was never asked to have to produce big yardage games, because that wouldn’t jive with their kind of offensive game plan. At least to me PITT. always seemed to put almost every facet of the game before passing. Not last year though. Jeesh 500 yds. in a game! Also the stats you quoted are (SADLY) pretty decent for a Chi. receiver. & I love the BEARS!!! Just sayin though.

More people should be pissed at this from a Bears standpoint

There is no way in hell that the Steelers just willingly gave up Holmes for a 5th round pick to a team in the AFC. A team that was on the brink of the Superbowl at that. If the Steelers did that then there is some serious issues with the Steelers management.

A 5th round pick?? For a guy that could or solved all of our problems at the position for the next 5 years?? A Superbowl MVP on a rookie contract??? UNBELIEVABLE!

with the scrutiny Pitt is under right now… there was no way, facing a 4-game suspension, and a contract due up, that he was going to garner a high round pick… nobody wants a headache…especially us.

superbowl MVP in this light, is about as relevant as saying “pro bowl player” at this point.

Jay, a 5th round pick.

A 5th rounder is worth it just to see what the possibility is. This is a team that was trying to get Plaxico Burress and he’s in Jail! And draft Lance Louis who has a checkered past. Nah the Bears blew this one.

Lance Louis is our bad boy… who by the way, got into a a fight. far as i know, thats his only charge, although i’m willing to stand corrected…but from where i sit, thats way less offensive than Holmes’ rap sheet.

it’s a 5th rounder for a contract year, in which his demands will be enormous, AND it’s only 12 games he’ll be playing in.

5th rounder… i see the logic, what will we get for our 5th rounder? we won’t know until draft day.

The Bears did miss out...

on getting a vet WR who could have added to an inexperienced WR corps. Not really all that upset about Holmes in particular, but the Bears could easily have done this deal. There has been a great deal of clamor about the Bears needing a vet back-up QB, but, IMO, getting a vet WR on this offense is much more important. I think Hester, Knox, DA, and Bennett are all fine, but the Bears still need a star #1 WR. Holmes fit that bill and was had for a 5th round pick. Unless DA emerges as THE go to guy on this offense, this Bears offense will be lots of running around and little production.

by BearNecessities on Apr 13, 2010 2:50 AM CDT up reply actions

It's simple

The Jets are a run first team with an overrated QB in Sanchez. Edwards wasn’t that much better in NY than he was in Cleveland. Holmes is good but not great. Holmes had a good year last year because Ward was almost always the recipient of double teams. it took Holmes 4 years to live up to his 1st round status. Knox was a low round draft pick who is only going to get better and in the long run he will prove to be far better than Holmes. And if we’re going to give up any form of picks for a receiver I’d rather it be Marshall

We drafted Knox out of the fifth round.

I know how you feel and to be honest I felt the same way.But lets think about this, off the field issues+1 year contract+first 4 games suspension+1less year Johnny Knox or Bennet will get to learn Mike Marts system. The negatives out weight the positives and we could draft a player in the 5th round like Robert Johnson, or the linebacker from Penn.

They better draft a linebacker or some other position in the draft. Because if they turnaround and draft a WR with their 4th or 5th round pick, then it really did make more sense to take a chance on Holmes.

It would of been really nice to have that second round pick this year………….

by I love football! on Apr 13, 2010 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I think the difference is...

Gaines Adams was a classic case of “buy low” mentality. He still had all the skills he was drafted for from college, just never produced and the Bears thought they could fix it.

If so, it would have been like getting a Peppers level DE for a 2nd rounder and a cheap contract.

Alas, it wasn’t to be. However, I think Adams had more upside than Holmes does, WR with checkered past and unreliable production that is going to want a big contract. Meh. As I’ve said a few times, if I didn’t like our young guys, I’d probably still not want him, but could see the argument, as is, it seems like a waste of a 5th rounder.

Super Bowl MVP > MVP of nothing

“if so” maybe, but at no time was it. IMO a 2nd rounder was way too high for Adams, but a 5th rounder is super cheap for a young Super Bowl MVP WR, especially considering how mad we are at wr.

by No It All on Apr 13, 2010 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

WR is hardly our biggest need.

And we’re limited on picks this year, in serious need of young O-linemen and someone who can keep a seat locked down in the FS/SS game of musical chairs. If Santonio was a big fella, like Cutler seems to like, maybe… but we’ve got a few 5-11ish guys with speed already.

by No It All on Apr 13, 2010 9:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but that's not exactly a stamp of supreme approval...

Deion Branch won one too, and Holmes MVP was almost entirely predicated on catching the winning TD with a toe tap, and the final drive in general.

That makes him a good receiver, but still doesn’t make him consistent.

That's like saying...

You’d buy a case of crabs if the price was cheap enough.

Some things aren’t value no matter how cheap they are, this is one of them.

Simply put, and if I wasn’t completely on board for Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall, both of which are much better players than Holmes, then it’s a tough sell no matter the price. I want our plethora of young receivers to develop before Cutler is 35.

There is nothing good about getting crabs, and you obviously wouldn’t pay to get an STD, regardless of how cheap they are. Holmes does have redeeeming value—he’s a good WR, the downside is he’s a knucklehead.

And if you wouldn’t be on board with getting Boldin or Marshall, then there’s really no point in talking to you.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan.

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad.
