2010 Chicago Bears/ NFL Draft (Round 1 Open Thread)

04swac4_mediumUndoubtedly the single-largest event of the offseason, the 2010 NFL Draft is here!  For the first time ever, the Draft is moving into primetime, and is garnering more attention than ever before.  While the Chicago Bears won't pick until tomorrow, Windy City Gridiron will be open for business!

This is it...the time of year when we find out what the fresh young talent added to the roster will be. We'll find out: Will the Bears get a legitimate free safety? How valuable was the pick Chicago gave to Denver for Cutler?  Where does the popular Tim Tebow actually get taken?

And hopefully, we don't hear the words "defensive lineman" too much with regards to the Bears.

We'll be busy all weekend for you, bringing you draft boards just like this one for the first three rounds, and awesome highlight sections for the other rounds. Then when it's all said and done, we'll bring you comprehensive analysis of the moves the Bears make. And, as always, we want you folks to be involved. We've got the best and brightest members of any website on the internet, and this is your time to shine!  So, what say you?!

It could really change how the Cutler trade is viewed.

nobody can be that high, on orton. I think Tebow is a 1st rounder and I can’t see McD passing him up.

The (seemingly) million or so idiot Broncos fans who came over last season would beg to differ.

I just

always got that feeling due to the way orton talked and what not…Especially after the quinn trade….

I'll mail a prize to the person who gets all three questions correct:

1- What position will the Bears draft first? (FS, DE, OG, etc.)
2- Which team will draft Tim Tebow?
3- How many QBs will be drafted in the 1st round?

Only one entry per member… have fun!

by Dane Noble on Apr 22, 2010 5:23 PM CDT reply actions

OK

1 – FS
2 – denver
3 – 3

My first visit back in months

And I’m already angling to steal the prizes off of your table. :- b

1 – OG. I can’t see them drafting anything else given how scary the North D-lines look like this year.
2 – Vikes. The only thing that Brad Childress didn’t do regarding Tebow was [expletive deleted]. Frankly, I’d rather have Clausen. Think of the pickle jokes!
3 – 4

Not really...

Both Quinn and Tebow are the same thing, they are guys that have physical tools that need work on the finer points of being a QB. I don’t really like McDaniels, but it’s hard to argue that he’s not a damn good QB coach. If they end up with one franchise QB out of Quinn and Tebow, then it doesn’t really matter. It also doesn’t hurt matters that Tebow could actually be a passable starter at a few other positions, if it turns out that Quinn develops, and Tebow can’t fix his mechanics.

I think they could have waited and traded up into the top of the 2nd, and saved a pick probably, but hey, why not, if that was the guy they wanted.

Associate Writer - WindyCityGridiron.com

by Jacob Hayes on Apr 22, 2010 9:15 PM CDT up reply actions

So, why both?

It makes no sense whatsoever. They were high on Brandstater or whatever his name is as well. Two projects at QB sounds like a living nightmare. Talk about a QB controversy? This one has all of them beat.

by propheteer on Apr 22, 2010 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't really think it counts as a controversy...

If you know for a fact Tebow isn’t starting.

Like Tebow isn’t even a question, I don’t even think he has a shot of playing his way onto the field. I think he’ll be the #3 QB at best.

The only person that has a shot at starting outside of injury this year for the Broncos is Orton, and a slim chance of Quinn.

As far as why both? I think because Quinn was procured for a literal song. I mean, you hear people crying about the sweetheart deal the Steelers gave the Jets, but the Broncos got Quinn for a 6th round pick they drafted, and a 7th round pick in the 2011 draft. I mean seriously? No matter how you feel about Quinn, he’s got more value than basically a 6th and a 7th, even if it’s just as a back up. When you think of it from that frame of reference it’s a bit easier to contemplate.

I dunno if people would be boggling if Tebow was picked this year, and if a QB of Quinn’t talent fell to the 6th round and the Broncos picked him up out of value, and that’s really the best way to view this deal.

QB’s are a crap shoot in the NFL, and if you can get two guys you think that you can groom into a franchise QB for fairly cheap, I say go for it as long as you have the guy that can actually groom them and they do.

Associate Writer - WindyCityGridiron.com

by Jacob Hayes on Apr 22, 2010 10:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it less to do

with supposed value of a former 1st round draft pick, and more to do with having another QB who wants to start. Competition is great to have all over your team, but QB is one place where it can cause a huge distraction.

Sizzle, Marshall, and Scheffler. Wow. Then, to make it worse, they trade lots of picks to move up for a guy that would’ve been there anyways, all while passing on the consensus #2 QB on the board, only to draft a position that’s overly crowded on their team!

Tim Tebow has to be the most overhyped player coming out of college

since Brian Bosworth..

I have a lot of respect for the kid

he is one of the greatest college football players in history but…the guy is just not going to be a good pro. I take great joy in the ego of McHoodie thinking he is going to transform him into this stud QB..

Even if he is going to be a good pro, you have to look at his talent level and readiness objectively.

And when you do that, there’s no way you take him that early in that situation. Sure, McD is supposed to work wonders with QBs, but he just traded for half the league’s unproven young’uns. Is he starting an orphanage?

You're right

Can’t disagree, and I really don’t like the guy. With that being said, he’s willing to learn and be taught in a system that I think kind of fits him pretty well.

He was drafted near the same spot as Tebow and sat for 3 or 4 years learning the system. Who’s to say Tebow can’t do that for two maybe behind Orton or Quinn? Gross, this is the last post I’m writing regarding Tebow, ugh, my fingers feel like I’ve stuck ’em in ESPN.

Towards the middle part of the draft before Thomas was selected

New England had their pick, which they ended trading down with. I was “hoping” JA would put something together to move there. This years 3rd and maybe 5th and next year’s 2nd maybe. Oh well, I’m officially on the “trade up and draft Nate Allen” bandwagon now.

Allen vs. Wright or Burnett

Is there that big of a drop-off between these guys? Probably enough to trade your 3rd this year and next year’s second.

That's exactly what I'm thinking too

Allen > Wright, Burnett, Johnson, etc. Though I’ve started to like Johnson here as of late.

Yah bruh

Johnson is a beast and could be ha din the 4th or 5th.

But if i falls like it has been, we could have burnett or Wright in the early thir if we can package and tradeup to the first few picks

What is the possibility of getting Atogwe from the Rams still?

That’s if JA really does mean what he says and won’t mortgage the future trading future picks… which really doesn’t make sense being as if he doesn’t win next here he’ll be gone anyway.

by Da Sassage on Apr 22, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't see trading the 2nd as mortgaging the future.

Sure you lose this year’s third and next year’s 2nd, but you’re solidifying a position that has needed to be filled for years. You’re still left w/ next year’s 1st, 3rd, and so on.

Chevelle and Three Days Grace??? Fuc*ing AWESOME!!!

by Acreman20 on Apr 22, 2010 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

that's the way JA sees it... at least that's the way it came across to me.

regardless, he said in an interview he’s not in the business of doing that anymore. i’m sure he was probably scolded for the Gaines Adams trade.

by Da Sassage on Apr 22, 2010 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

He might have

been referring to just the 1st rounders, but not sure.

I personally liked the Adams trade

A second for a former top 5 pick I believe? W/ Hot Rod coaching him up I think he could’ve turned into a good player, at least equal to a DE you’d grab in the 2nd round.

I thought the same thing

The draft is still a crapshoot, and at the very least Adams would’ve been decent with plenty of upside.

YES YES YES

But I doubt they can pull that off

by TheMan1 on Apr 22, 2010 10:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Maybe, I think you have to see what happens though.

I think Nate Allen is good, but I don’t think you’ll need to move that far up in the 2nd to draft him at this point, and if you do it’s already too late. Two of the teams with big S needs already got their guy, with Kansas City, and Seattle drafting the two big guys, but Taylor Mays is still on the board. The two teams off the top of my head with huge FS needs this second are the Eagles and the Browns and they pick back to back. Next years 2nd isn’t going to be enough with our third this year to trade up before the Eagles.

Basically, the Eagles, Browns, Dolphins all have needs, and if we’re going to trade up to the top of the 2nd, before all those guys, I’d rather take Mays :P

Wouldn't rather have Mays since he can't cover

but I definitely don’t think we can afford to overpay on any move up scenario’s. We have too many holes to fill.
